I have a heat pump water heater and absolutely love it. Literally costs me nothing to run in the summer because I used to have a dehumidifier going in the basement all day. Now the hot water is ā€œfreeā€ since I donā€™t need the dehumidifier. People in cold climates should be aware that recovery times can be slower in winter, but most HPWHs have a supplemental electric element to help out when needed.

A whole home Electric Tankless is a flat out bad idea for a normal sized home! We refuse to install them and have seen major problems! They will also take up half of your 200 amp standard electrical panel. Now the Point-Of-Use under sink electric units can work alright and can heat water for one fixture. With this setup you will need multiple Point-Of-Use units for your home.

Hello Joshua: I have and 80 gallon electric water heater made by American; it's 30 y/o; we flush it sometimes; First year we had to replace bottom element due to minerals; ever since has been trouble-free; no pan underneath. Sits on elevated concrete recess in the garage. I truly call it "great quality" !!!

Just to give you an idea of how much energy is wasted in a 40 gallon gas chimney vented water heater we shall do the math. Chimney vented gas water heaters lose about 7 degrees an hour just sitting there and that rate is consistent whether you are using hot water or not. The Math… 40 gallons= 333 lbs….333 x 7 degrees = 2331 BTUS an hour. 1 pound of water 1 degree is 1 btu. Simple Simple math. So we have lost 2331 BTUs in one hour. In 24 hours that would be 2331 x 24 hours=55,944 BTUs in 24 hours. in 1- 30 day month that would be 55,944 BTUs x 30 =1,678,320 BTUs in 1 month. It his hard for many people to visualize BTUs so lets convert that into something everyone can understand. 1 gallon of propane contains 92,000 BTUs. The small propane tanks under your grill contain 4 gallons of propane when filled. so we take 92,000 x 4 =368,000 BTU,s contained in 1 full grill tank of propane. So now we take our 1,678,320 BTUs and divide it by grill tanks. 1,678,320 / 368,000 =4.56 tanks of propane per month just to maintain lost heat. Lets go for a year! 4.56 x 12 months=55 tanks of propane to just replace what is lost through the walls of the tank and up the flue. Now lets look at a tankless water heater. Heat loss due to standby 0. There is no argument and tank water heaters should be made illegal. Period. One tip I would like to offer is to always check and make sure your floor drain in your mechanical room is open. We have already went to drain an old water heater only to find the trap was blocked. Always throw a couple of buckets down it to keep it primed and to insure it works if the water heater goes. Are you in Orleans ?

No reason to wrap water heaters in insulation when foam has been industry standard for many years. All are very efficient now.

Complete waste of money on a wrap unless you have a tank from 30 years ago or longer where fiberglass was used behind the metal jacket. Service area Kanata??

Solar water heaters are a gimmick…the outdoor parts are deformed and ruined from the elements. Natura gas water heater storage tanks are still the best value. Tankless are a waste unless you have to have endless hot water every day.

In my home the original water heater was placed on the concrete floor of the garage. When it rusted out at the bottom I suspected that location was the cause. I happened to have a thick (2") composite wood large enough to fit under the heater. I used it, along with about ten bricks, to elevate the heater onto a short platform. That made condensation and rust on the bottom less likely and probably meant less heat conduction. Just make sure the platform is strong enough. When full, water heaters weigh hundreds of pounds. I also installed a pan underneath. It isn't deep enough to catch much water, but it will reveal when I have a leak.

What do you think about gas tankless what heaters in well water applications over a marathon tank? Iā€™m in the hvac trade and Iā€™m really wanting to put a gas tankless

Two of my neighbors and I have had electric on demand water heaters of different brands for over 10 years without any problems. My parents have replaced their tank water heater twice during this time. We probably did get lucky. Very few things are quality made anymore.

I love tankless water heaters, but only the gas fired ones and for most people the overall cost of ownership is not too bad compared to a tanked water heater, you NEED to maintain it at least yearly for it to stay in good shape and reliable. Itā€™s not a big deal to just flush it yearly and check the burners and clean the flame sensor(s) and such semi annual or so
