I swear this was one of the nastiest things I have had to clean... It started as a walk in freezer call that led to so much more...

Oh look at this. These dang flying rats are all in here just annihilating this crap in here literally, that's just all pigeon crap. That seems really healthy, good, gosh, stupid birds. This video is brought to you by sportlin quality, integrity and tradition.

All right, it is 9. 10 on august 3rd, 9. 10 p.m. This is the emergency service call on a walk-in freezer, not working.

You can see. We got one evaporator fan motor, not working the ke2, therm controller, say in excess of defrost. We have one side of the coil. That looks like it's extremely frosted up and it's like plus 20 degrees in here right now, so we need to uh turn this guy off, get it defrosted and try to figure out.

What's going on all right, my rack is right here um this sucks man. This condenser is going to be ruined, yeah, there's calcium, all over it. So we have a uh train freaking spaceship right here that has this fancy giant like one horsepower ecm motor that failed and we have been waiting for it for like a month and a half now and there's no eta, it's a nightmare. So this is like a space shuttle thing man.

It has like variable, speed, compressors and all kinds of crazy technology in it so yeah that is not good man, there's calcium on the condenser. This sucks all right. Well, anyways! That's not what we're here for right now. We need to open up this rack um, because we're gon na have to power it down and turn it back on to get this opened and, let's see, if i can get this turned back on there, we go and we're going to have to find the walk-in Freezer, which want to see what it is here ah walk in freezer is system b, so system b we need to kill the power to it should be this guy, we'll go downstairs, make sure the power's, killed and check everything out.

Oh look at this. These dang flying rats are all in here just annihilating this crap in here literally, that's just all pigeon crap. That seems really healthy, good, gosh, stupid birds all right. Well, let's get to what we need to get to.

I believe this is system b right here. Yes, it is, this, is our compressor. Power is turned off, compressor is not running anymore. We need to uh defrost that evaporator and then go through it from there.

I forgot that there's a separate power source just for the evaporator on this guy, with these smart evaporators that have these smart controllers. They typically do that, so we got ta find that second breaker all right. If i was smart enough, i would have read that i wrote right here. Breaker number two is for the walk-in freezer compressor number six walk-in freezer evaporator.

So this is breaker number six. So now we should be good. Let's go downstairs and check it. Dang this place is so big.

I had to run three 50-foot water hoses just to get over here, so this blade looks like it's stuck in ice. I don't know if it's gon na be good or not we're gon na pull it off this one. I'm surprised! It's still running, but it is go figure so we'll get all these pulled off. The motors are gon na have to get wet.
I don't like it, but it is what it is and we're gon na have to get pans to put underneath here, because this is all gon na drip down. Yeah, it's gon na be a fun one, even though i'm frustrated, even though i don't wan na be here and i'm irritated. They took me this long for them to call me, i'm still being careful. I don't want to get water on the floor.

I don't want to create a bigger mess um, so i defrosted it just enough to get the motor bracket out. I'm going to take the bolts out, pull the motor out go to town on that a little bit at a time this one, the motor, is probably going to end up getting a little wet, but you know i'm still gon na take my time and do it Right all right! So what causes this? How does this ice get this thick when they have these smart controllers? They skip defrost based off of temperature, sensors of the coil. Unfortunately, the smart sensors don't look at what's in the side panels, so the frost and ice starts to build up in the side panels or when it goes into defrost. It doesn't melt the little bit, that's in the side panels and then it slowly builds and then expands and comes over.

It's one of the flaws of these smart defrost evaporators come back here. Look at how much ice! There is that's insane right. It's pretty nuts! One thing that this wand really does well is it has the mist feature, and the mist feature is really good for getting like when you don't want to damage the motor and get it soaking wet it'll get up in there and melt the ice slowly without getting Too much water on the motor you know, so that's really nice all that ice for so long bowed the drain pan down significantly i'll try to bend it back up that thing's pretty jacked up, but it's all clear now at this point. So this is the electrical panel.

Getting all the ice out of here is critical same thing on the other side, with the expansion valve and stuff got to get it all out, all right, we got it all out and then go figure. There's not a single drop of ice or piece of ice in the expansion valve section. Do the math on that one, that's interesting! So all right, we got to assemble this guy turn it on make sure it comes down in temperature and we'll probably come back tomorrow and follow up because it's getting pretty late now so but we'll see, that's a plus. Both evaporator fan motors are running and moving air, but i'm definitely changing both of those blades because they were hitting ice.

We're going to let it run for a little bit. Bring the box temperature down go make sure the side glass is clear and then we'll probably get out of here and, like i said as long as i see a significant drop in temperature, we'll come back, follow up, make sure everything's doing good. On the plus side. I don't know about a year and a half ago i redid that trap and it's good.
So that's cool still not uh messed up, even though i kind of butchered it but turned out pretty good, so uh yeah we're gon na. Let this run for a bit and see it drop in tim. Well, that doesn't seem right. It's been running for about 20 minutes and i come in here and it's in a defrost, the coil's too hot, for it to be in a defrost.

It shouldn't be letting it do that, but since it is we're gon na go ahead and check the heaters real quick, but i bet you we're gon na have bad sensors for that controller, so this guy has two heaters. One of them is at four amps, the other one is just under four amps. So that's good, so the heaters are working, but i don't think this thing should be in a defrost right now. I really don't want to hook up my computer to this thing.

It's the easiest way to troubleshoot. This thing is to hook up your computer or hook up the wi-fi thing and pull it up on your phone. I don't want to go through all that um. I don't do it very much.

I haven't done it in like two years or a year and a half since the last time. I made a video on this and it's gon na. Take me a few minutes to remember the passwords and how to log in and everything. So i don't know i'm gon na think about this for a minute, so i'm gon na deal with the defrost thing in the morning.

It's significantly dropped down to 15 degrees, we'll tell them to keep an eye on it. I'll bring some sensors some fan, blades and then we'll hook up to the computer and troubleshoot. The multiple defrosts too, which again, like i said, is probably going to be bad sensors. I will likely be evicting the pigeons when i come back, i'm going to give them a warning and leave the doors off tonight and hopefully they bounce but they're, going to be gone tomorrow.

I don't care how it happens. All right sight, glass has a few bubbles in it, but i don't think it's anything to be too concerned about tonight. It's kind of coming and going so it's just barely there so we'll check on it. In the morning, like i said, it's dropping significantly compressors running hot discharge, cold suction.

I think we're going to be okay for now, all right, we are back the next morning, um they've got it packed full of crazy food in here. Right now, box is down to temp we're going to log in with the computer on the controller, we also got to top off the charge and just dive into this guy. Okay, so i am connected to the controller via my computer. This is an evap efficiency controller.

This is one of the first generations or second generation, so it's an older one. It is an oem specific one. So i believe some of the features are limited. If you had an actual ke2 therm one, i think you can get more features but anyways.

That's another issue: for another day: the point of this controller is it's a smart evaporator controller. You can take any evaporator and you can convert it into a smart evaporator that has the capability of controlling superheat via an eev. Okay, we have an eev and the valve positions. At 37 we can look at via sensors the evaporator, the air temperature, the suction line temperature.
It can give me super heat readings. We can control defrost. We can also uh via the settings in here. This thing is capable of saying hey, you know what i don't think we need to defrost because there's no ice on the evaporator, so it skips the defrost if you have it, set up that way.

So if we look in here, let's see yep defrost is demand. Okay right there demand defrost mode. So that means that the controller is deciding whether or not it needs a defrost. Now i will say the evaporator itself wasn't really iced up from the looks of it.

I mean it was but from the looks of it, it started on the left side just because i think we have some poor sensor placement on this guy. Why we're going to add a second sensor, but that's the point of this controller and i realize there's a lot of people that are going to say: go to old school and there's times that i'd like to go to old school too. But this is what's here. So i'm going to make it work.

You also have the capability of taking off the smart defrost and changing it to timed defrost 2, which will consume a little more energy, but it is what it is now uh. We can see everything i've compared everything to what measure quick is saying, because i am connected on there. The numbers look pretty accurate 20 psi we're about 18.7 psi 21 or negative. Two return: air temp, uh negative; three return, air temp, so everything's within reason.

Okay: let's go to the graphs, that's one thing: this thing has it has the capability of looking at the last seven days and you can see the defrosts and in my eyes this is defrosting too much. Okay, the green represents the air temperature. The blue represents the coil temperature and i don't think we should be defrosting that much so right now it looks like we're defrosting. What is it one? Two, three, four, five, six, seven eight eight times in a day.

I don't think it quite needs that, but it could just be that that ice was there and it kept trying to go into defrost to melt that ice, but it wasn't capable. So that's what i need to figure out. Why was this thing icing up? Is it just because of sensor placement like i think, or is there something else wrong, so i'm going to dive into it a little bit? If you look in here, the chaos is a bit more crazy than it was last night. Look at all the pigeon stuff.

It's nasty ugh, it's gross still those two pigeons. They must be sitting on eggs right here, yeah they're sitting on eggs, like i said, they're getting evicted today. I feel bad, but they're done all right. This guy's running um, look at that horrible brace coin.

At the top, that's crazy, so the sight glass was slightly flashing last night, but it's not. Today. I have a feeling it was flashing because the unit had just been turned on uh. It's it's the same temperature about about the same temperature right now as it was last night, but we will check the liquid level on the receiver just to make sure um yeah, but we're running so i'm gon na go ahead and turn the system off right now And we're gon na go ahead and do some sensor stuff, uh, adjusting the sensors and replacing sensors and stuff like that, and then we'll turn it back on and finish evaluating everything once we do that all right, i don't know if this is going to be a Mistake but i ran one right here and one over here where the ice is constantly forming and then i'm just plugging them in i'll plug one into the existing evap spot and then one into the auxiliary spot and then we'll try to program them at the user.
Interface: okay: we've set up uh t4 coil temperature. I just got off the phone with ke2, therm and they've informed me, so we have two coil temperatures now one reading negative seven one reading negative six, so they're relatively close, and if we go into the set points. The last time i was here, i had bumped up the defrost termination temperature a little bit higher, so they're saying 50 degrees, but we have our set for 60.. Now i just clarified with them that both of those sensors have to reach 60 degrees before it terminates.

It does not average the sensor so we're going to see how this works and if we can reduce that weird frost on the left side, hopefully, is what i'm hoping there um yeah and that's it. I'm gon na go ahead and leave it in demand. Defrost everything else is set super heat at eight degrees. It's looking good um, i mean you know it's still doing a pull down right now, so that super heat's a little bit high.

But let's give it some time and like i said, i still need to check that uh liquid level in the receiver too, to make sure that we have enough refrigerant in it, because the sight glass was flashing a little bit last night. But it could have just been on the pull down so yeah. This is so nasty you can better bet. I have freaking a mask on kid.

These pigeons won't bounce. They like want to protect their egg man they're right over here. The damn things won't go get out of here. I feel bad, but i can't do much man, the guy's just chilling over here.

Damn pigeons won't go. I really feel bad, but there's not much. I can do here. This shit's got to go and it's very unhealthy.

Stupid pigeons, freaking rats. This is insane guys look at the stuff. All that is pigeon crap that i kicked out of there, man it is getting everywhere. I hope i didn't get it down the roof hatch, but uh yeah.

I still got ta deal with this and then we're gon na mitigate this problem. This will not happen again when we're done so, don't know what else to do. I don't really have anything so after i rinsed everything i'm putting some coil cleaner on it. Hopefully it doesn't cause problems, i don't know if it'll become acidic or something who knows, that's the only thing that i know that'll clean this crap off.
So i turned off the rack. I'm gon na give everything a good rinse and then we'll wash it all down, and hopefully that sanitizes this area and then we'll uh we'll be uh trying to hopefully we'll see, i'm going to talk to the customer, but i'm going to probably permanently uh screen the Area off with that way, they can't ever get underneath it again. While i have the coil cleaner, we're going ahead and cleaning the rack and it's a good thing, because it's coming off pretty dirty so we're gon na do one last rinse on all the compressors and everything so yeah. It's coming clean now, nice and good, and then we'll rinse off the compressors.

I sprayed it all over the roof. Of course, this stuff isn't great to get on the roof, but we got to do something to sanitize it for sure. So all right, we got it all cleaned up: sanitized coil, cleaner, all inside underneath we're going to work on putting some permanent screen up that they can't get underneath rinsed it all the way down all the way over here cleaned all this to all this back. Here all the way down into the drain, i could only imagine what it looks like down on the street right now, because that's all going down there but, like i said, we'll, come up with a permanent solution for this, that the ding pigeons won't get under still Got a lot of stuff everywhere else on the roof.

You know they're going to have to get people to take care of that. I did confirm all the bird screens or outside air filters are in the ac's, because i've had them climb in the acs at other restaurants. Before too, but everything's back up and running um. We still got to check the charge on this one, the liquid level too.

So all right, so that's my receiver and my liquid levels right about at the three-quarter mark all right. So that's right about here where my finger's at that's the three-quarter mark. We can't put any more gas in this system. So side glass is running clear when it was flashing, it must have been that it was just uh starting up.

You know so you got to give it time to stabilize out, but that's it this guy's good, we're going to tell them to keep an eye on this one, and now we're going to work on the bird screen all the way around all right, we're looking good. I came in with some really thin mesh right here and it's secured to the edge now on this side. I didn't go anywhere where it's going to create a roof leak, because i can stick my finger. I kept it right on the edge and then i bent it over, but then i put screws down on the inside too okay.

I also left some extra just in case this ever gets pulled out now. On the other side, i did have to penetrate where there's potential roof leaks. So on this side, what we did was we secured. This side went a lot easier.
We secured it right and then we pulled the screws out. Globbed silicone ran it down into silicone, then put silicone on top all the way through and bent it around the edges and secured it. So that way birds aren't going to get in there again. So problem solved we're done with this one.

I'm tired, i'm going to tell them to get a pest control company to take care of the other crap, because i can't clean this entire roof. You know, but that's it. There really is nothing more frustrating than a late night service call and when you get there, you know you know that you need to hook up your computer and and it's just the thought process that goes into that. I just wasn't in the headspace to be dealing with that that night now, luckily, for my case, the box was coming down to temperature.

I wasn't too happy about it, defrosting the way that it was, but it was capable of making it through the night. Until i can come out the next morning now worst case scenario, i will say that the manufacturer of that controller, ke2, therm or ke2 - they actually have emergency tech support. They will answer the phone, so you know if you ever need something with one of their products. They will help you um they're they're good about that, but i don't you know, want to necessarily wake anybody up in the middle of the night to talk to them when i think it's going to make it through the night um - and you know when i went Back out the next morning, i was able to hook the system up and then you know have a better head space and be able to go through it a little bit more thorough, okay and then, of course, too.

I needed to mitigate that pigeon problem because that was nasty. That's unhealthy! That's not safe to be working around pigeons like that. Who knows what kind of disease or bacteria yeah that's just gross okay. So while i feel bad about evicting them, you know from their home right.

I evicted squatters out, probably that's probably against california law. What i did to be honest with you, those pigeons probably had a some kind of rights or something you know i probably had to evict them to uh anyways we're not going to go there but um yeah. It sucked. You know - and i didn't know what else to clean that rack with that wasn't going to cause problems and what's interesting to those pigeons, they really did have to go because where their crap was at like when it was on the copper lines, it was actually having Some sort of a chemical reaction with the copper line, so it wasn't good, it would change the color of the copper lines and stuff so coil.

Cleaner was the only thing that i had on my truck that i knew. Could you know thoroughly remove that stuff, whether or not it truly sanitized it? I don't know, but it did a pretty darn good job of letting it sit. You know and then just chewing all the pigeons out. They eventually flew away.
Well, one of them was still walking around, but there's not much. I could do about that. I pushed him over into the shade and hopefully he didn't get taken by a raven, but oh well, so we cleaned that and then we eliminated the problem. Okay, that screen that i went and got we siliconed it on.

We secured it on it's never coming off and i even left some extra screen just in case someone accidentally rips it off um. You know when i say it's never coming off. People still got to use common sense, but you know stuff will happen, probably but um. As far as the system operations.

I was a little bit worried about the defrosting because uh, if you guys have seen it already. I have a video on this walk-in where i said it's been iced up for three months or something like that or four months or whatever, because when everything was shut down, i got a call out here too, and it was just as bad. So i wanted to try to eliminate this problem, potentially from happening again. Okay and the last time i made a video some people reached out to me, and then i talked to ke2 therm and they said yeah.

That's the truth that you can actually add a second sensor. Second evaporator sensor, which is really cool because i put it basically where the ice issue was at so that way, potentially it keeps defrosting. So, let's see, if that happens, another thing that i will point out is, if you guys ever pay attention to to these walk-in freezers. If you ever see what the strip heaters look like, they typically don't get very hot for the first like three or four inches of the actual strip heater, and i suspect that has something to do with the way that this guy's icing up too.

I feel like that the temperature sensor that was existing before i modified the system being all the way at the other end is where they're going to get a lot of heat, and i feel like that's a bad placement for the evaporator temperature sensor. Okay, so by moving it or putting two now one down at the end and then one in the middle, i'm hoping that that's going to hopefully prevent some of this freeze up issue that we've been having okay - and i will address this too, because the last video - A million people commented about it um straight above my head, there's a enunciator for the fire system that also has a strobe on it. Okay, that is not a fire alarm. It is, i mean it's not a duct detector or anything like that.

It's an enunciator! So basically, it makes the audible sound and if it's supposed to flash, if there's ever a fire in the building to let the occupants that are inside that walk and potentially know it's time to get out. I don't know if it really showed it in this video or not, but it's full of ice. That's a whole nother problem for the customer to figure out. That's not my issue.

Okay, it's a really bad placement, in my opinion of an enunciator but anyways so other than that um. You know as a pretty straightforward deicing, the walk-in freezer. I never got to change the fan blades. After all.
The supply house that i went to that morning did not have them, but they look. Okay, i would have liked to have changed them, but you know we'll just keep an eye on it and see what happens so all together we just added the two sensors and then i kid you not. We probably spent four hours if not more cleaning. All the bird stuff off the roof - that was the longest time consuming thing and yes, their back dock was destroyed with bird crap by the way because it went all the way down the drain and then yeah that was pretty gross, but um customers happy uh.

We've been back there once since about three four days later, everything's still looking good, not seeing any issues there. I'd say that the most important thing about this job is to understand the sequence of operation right. So i got called out in the middle of the night, and i understood enough that hey, we need to start by getting this defrosted, i'm not going to panic we're just going to defrost it we're going to put it back together. Turn it on and see what happens you know and then we just watch it step by step now, while i'm always thinking about the big picture and thinking about the end game, i'm still focusing on the task at hand just keeping the other stuff in the back Of my mind, you know so you come in defrost, the coil put it back together start it up, then move on to the next step, instead of trying to predict exactly what's going on 10 steps down the line, let's just get this done and then we'll proceed Further from that point, okay, it's it's really easy to come into these, especially as a new technician and get overwhelmed and miss very important things, because you're not paying attention to the task at hand and you're you're, you're thinking.

You know 52 steps down the line. Now, once you become an experienced technician, you have to learn how to multitask and you have to learn how to you know, do what you're supposed to do the task at hand, but then start predicting things that are going to happen, but it's really easy to get Lost especially if you're a newer technician so remember, keep your eye on the prize focus on what needs to be done and take it one step at a time. Obviously, if you're a newer guy keeping some sort of management supervisor, whoever in the loop letting them know. What's going on, you know, middle of the night stuff can be a little overwhelming.

Sometimes it can be frustrating because you're out there late at night, but it is what it is. It's part of the job you know. If i don't take this call, someone else will it's as easy as that. So if i want my company to keep doing the work, i got to take the calls.

It is what it is all right, hey. I really appreciate you guys making it to the end of this video. It is so awesome so humbling to have all the support from you guys. If you haven't already, please consider checking out my website.

Great video. Is there a way to put some type of remote monitoring system on these units for the customers that always call you. Then you know ahead of time what is going on.

For future reference, you can clean off bird boo-doo with the following mixture.

    1 part Palmolive
    1 part Baking soda
    5 parts water

This is a pre-soak. If the mess is REALLY bad and smells HORRIBLE, replace the water with 3% hydrogen Peroxide. This shouldn't damage anything, but it will shred apart any organic waste material and dead things you come across with shocking efficiency. The significant acts as a de greaser. It IS important if you use this, you hit it with a specialized rinse before applying the wash.

    2 parts Palmolive
    1 part Lysol Concentrate
    5 parts Water

This is the actual wash. The pre-soak cleans very well, but is mainly meant to cut off major gunk, and this actually cleans what's underneathe it. The lyson disinfects.

    Rinse with water.

Your coil cleaner does the job, but this stuff will handle virtually any organic material you throw at it. Shit, this will actually eliminate Skunk spray.

You have to be VERY careful with pigeon crap, seriously. I work in power, we had a couple guys go to the floor of a plant to weld in some beams for rigging. Pigeon crap everywhere and thick. They just started grinding it off and breathing the dust.
I don’t remember the name of the disease, it’s a fungus or bacteria, but they both were deathly sick in a couple days and damn near died.
One guy couldn’t breathe enough to ever work again, they were both in ICU for quite awhile. After that the company started being in experts to abate the droppings. They wear respirators and full suits. Be careful with it.

When dealing with flying rats. Or pigeon the crap inside of an AC unit of course you want to turn the power off that parts no brainer. What I don't know. Is would it be a bad idea to pressure wash the compressors to get the crap out or would that damage the compressors I know it would damage the fins or the condensers but would it damage the area where the compressors are or would you just want to use a garden hose but a garden hose doesn't have the pressure to clean off caked on crap from those dumb birds. Service area Orleans??

As a child I spent many hours on a ladder with a heat-gun in walk-ins, mostly in bars, thawing evaps.
What's the one thing pigeons are kwon for? Always retuning home. Leaving the doors open, not sure if they are capable of deduction and reasoning that you give them credit for.
I would wager they had some dish detergent to clean up with.

  16. Avataaar/Circle Created with python_avatars Robert Pirlot says:

I don't expect my HVAC Guy to be dealing with birds and netting. My restaurant we have a pest control person who does that crap. They check from top to bottom and I inform them if I see any pest even a fricken cat roaming the neighborhood they get rid of them. Thankfully never had to deal with birds like this. Bird shit is Caustic.

WOW !! Your channel is great. Luv the way you lead us through the trouble shooting and the possible faults and causes. I’m just wondering when you will stop doing call-outs and get hired as a professor and produce more professionals like yourself. One of my instructors spent 24 yrs in the field and 9 yrs checking compliance with the city code before teaching at a community college.
Listening to his war stories over lunch and in the classroom was so kool. He didn’t miss the call-outs at 0 dark 30 nor working when it was -5 below zero here in Nebraska. He gets to see his family more and do things with them. Much respect to you and work safe.❤️🇺🇸

Pigeons are such filthy things. Messed up my shed when they got in there. Now when you secured the mesh net to the unit to keep any future issues with pigeons from happening why did you opt to go with silicone versus duct sealant or duct sealer? Is it just that the silicone has a better presentation? Or what was your method behind that? I'm just trying to learn from one of the best in the biz
