LOL, just get a degree in Anything at all and you can get a job in pretty much anything else. That's how it works these days. Got a degree in Pet Psychology, no problem that Stock Trading job is at your disposal. Just don't try to get a job that actually requires your specific degree. Yes I'm being facetious, but not really.. Are you in Barrhaven ?

we got a lot of guys here, they let them google the answer for the EPA exam
don't even know what superheat and subsool is, they just let the freon fly, who cares about your compressor

This was the Alternative back in my parents day called the 4X4 program. Many countries around the world still introduced the trade starting in high school for those who are not of the highest academic skills in reading writing and math.
I was amongst the last generation in California to attend trades classes before high school before they cancel them all and shut down the programs.
This was a grievous crime against society. For those who are responsible for closing down the programs.

Why would you want to earn money to learn a career in the trades when you can just get a piece of paper from a college and then all you have to do afterwards is work 20-30 years as a barista to repay the student loan ? I mean yeah you'll be a barista or a sales rep at Walmart but at least you'll have a degree that says you're smarter than me eh ๐Ÿ˜

Education implies not so much the communication of knowledge as the discipline of the intellect, the regulation of emotions and establishment of principles. Schooling, instruction is the communication of knowledge. Long ago, college was where students, separated away from the intellectually cooler climes of everyday life, were presented with challenging ideas to train their minds and condition them to control their emotional responses and pick up some principles. Students were provided the basics to become educated quicker than those who encountered the challenges in the work life.

Not many topics, if you truly master it, requires you to discipline your thoughts, control your emotional response and work from principles rather than instinct than the refrigeration cycle. You become educated in the true sense of the word. Then you can apply this new intellectual discipline to learning, really understanding, electricity. And if you've an interest, this same skill can be applied to readings or lectures in the humanities.

Don't think you can't become just as educated in the trades as you can in college, it will just come from another body of complex ideas to wrestle with than the traditional college curriculum. Or maybe as many college students do today, you'll learn some facts and processes that you apply mostly from rote.

Consider this from the father of modern education "The power of doing something not taught by nature or instinct; power or skill in the use of knowledge; the practical application of the rules or principles of science." – Johann Pestalozzi (defining education as the "generation of power"). HVAC education builds within the student this power, this power to do something useful for others.

I am retired and wanted to replace my unit. I have certs to work on small units. Local installers want to charge me twice their cost of the unit just for them to pick it up for the install. I have looked for schools to get the proper certs for home installs. I can't figure out how the same training varies from about 2,000 to 24000 and 1to 18 months! When you call to ask how much and how long, it is like pulling teeth to get an answer if you can get one. Just come in and we will have someone go over it all with you!!!!! Installers take real offense when you ask them how much they pay for units and freon verses what they charge for the same.

Yep. Best decision i ever made. I went to college for medical school, realized how competitive it is and how much debt you accrue; so I jumped into the trades. One year after that I'm now a lead Installer at a great HVAC company in AZ making 65k annually. For a single man at 24 years old, it's not bad. As time goes on I can also learn more and eventually make even more as I get into other parts of the industry like service and commerical work. Heck if I want to i could even start my own business in a few years.

I graduated in hvac 20 years ago, and now work in the power plant industry. There are many different routes one can take with an hvac education. It not all fixing ac all the time.

Iโ€™ve been an HVAC Tech for 20 years. The most disappointing thing to me about the job is seeing these ungrateful crybabies who canโ€™t go without Heat or cooling for a day or even a few hours if I have to order a part or something. To me most Americans are spoiled, pathetic, and disappointing. Iโ€™ve traveled to several countries where itโ€™s hotter and some people have never even seen an Air Conditioner. They should be grateful that they even have A/C and the means to get it fixed. They act like little brats like itโ€™s my fault that it broke or something. LOL SHM Service area Nepean??

Just got promoted after being overlooked , and asking dozens of times on how I can move up for a few years. As far as I knew I was ready a while back ago, but maybe they saw something that was wrong with me. I'm glad I got promoted, but I feel like they still only view me as nothing more than a helper. I learned that you have to pat yourself on your back because no one else will.

I am a retired Chemist, worked five years in refrig lab and then 20 years overall with BS Chemist uni degree. I got out of that and did a year in HVAC. You really should pick a trade as the future will not continue hiring many USELESS degrees. The trades are far superior as you can live most places you want, easier to work for yourself if you want, and following behind other companies you will find a lot of screwed up or hazardous stunts left by others. IMO much more rewarding to do HVAC, electrical.

Iโ€™m sure that you will get many enthusiastic applicants that will take advantage of this program but there are still many more out there that only want to make their fortune with just their laptop. What these kids donโ€™t realize that especially down there in Florida, a GOOD HVAC tech is sure to have as much work as they want(and the moneys not bad either).
Maybe you should team up with Mike Rowe who is also a big advocate of trades as a college alternative. Wish I was 20 years younger. I would have loved to get into HVAC/R work.
    Good luck with your program.๐Ÿ‘๐Ÿ‘๐Ÿ‘

  23. Avataaar/Circle Created with python_avatars Paul Garas says:

Being a tradesperson can be a hard life. You have to stick up for yourself.
You have to be ok with people not giving you the respect you deserve.
You have to put in the hours
You have to live with not being rich.
    But
Itโ€™s a great feeling to be the guy or girl who turns disasters around, saves products, gets processes going again, or makes people able to live in their home.
Its great to not realize that it was quitting time two hours ago until your spouse calls you.
Itโ€™s worth it because you can feel in your body every dollar youโ€™ve earned.
Itโ€™s exciting when you throw that disconnect and it all turns back on without the puff of smoke.
Itโ€™s not all sunshine and bliss and youโ€™re not gonna make $100000 without busting your ass for a long time but itโ€™s uniquely satisfying, interesting , humbling and entertaining.
I laugh a little when I get the heat running in a snowstorm because the folks in that building are having a bad day because their office was 60 degrees, but Iโ€™m having a great day because the machine and I fought and I won.
I might not be able to feel my toes, I might have six other calls to hit today but I won.
    I like my job.
