Joshua has had multiple people tell him after having repairs quoted for their HVAC system that they read online what the repair should have cost. Of course, it's always less than what they were actually quoted and in this video, we go through some of the reasons that may be why. As always, if you think a price is too high or a contractor is not being honest, always get another opinion or quote!

You gotten a quote on a heating and air repair and then you found out out after checking online. That it should have cost a different amount. I'm going go through just a few things that you might want to think about when you're comparing what something you read online versus an actual estimate you've gotten from a technician. First let me just say.

If you think for any reason. That an estimate is too high or not fair. I would always recommend get a second opinion. It's not that big a deal and most heating and air guys usually don't care so i can tell you if i had a customer that said well i think your price is a little high.

I'm gonna do some shopping on that i'm gonna look around it would not bother me at all i'm confident that i'm getting a fair price for the work that i'm gonna provide to that customer it would not bother me at all if a customer decided that they would like to look around does that mean i'm going to get every job does that mean they're not going to find someone less expensive to do the job. No i mean i think that it's probably safe to say that there are a lot of things that maybe they would find someone less expensive to do. But maybe that person they're getting maybe they're not providing the same amount of work or maybe. They're not comparing apples to apples or maybe.

They're just less expensive. That's possible too that would be the first thing. The second thing. I would say is just realize and you know this but just realize anybody can write anything on the internet.

So i could start a website tomorrow called hvac estimates or what should it costcom. Or whatever. The website's called and i can put on there that i think that it should cost this much money to replace a motor first of all there's all kinds of different motors. They're all priced differently not all markets are equal just realize the cost of living might affect how much the people in your area charge.

If you live in a more expensive area. You might have to pay a little more to have repairs done you're not comparing apples to apples. I can tell you that where i live alls. I got to do is cross the state line and because their taxes are higher because they have unions whereas.

We're a right to work state and other reasons just like that just crossing the state line their prices jump dramatically to get the same amount of work done and you might say well i don't think that's fair. I'm just telling you the facts i'm not debating politics or what's fair or what's not i'm just telling you that if you live in a more expensive area. The cost of living or the market or whatever may affect how much your repairs are and the last thing. I'll just point out is if that website.

If the web page that you're reading from is older than a year and i mean a year maybe even older than six months. So if you're reading from a website that's five years old for example you are not getting accurate information. I can tell you that a lot of materials and equipment and just things in general just in the past six months have jumped in price. Again.
If you're reading from a website that says. Oh it should cost between two and four hundred dollars to do this repair and now you've got a repairman saying. No it's it's gonna be five or six hundred dollars just realize the information you're getting may not be accurate anyone can write anything on the internet. And again.

I would just recommend that you get a second opinion or a third opinion. If you feel necessary to make sure that you're being treated fairly so thanks for watching hit that subscribe button. We'll see you next time you.

A lot of companies that are filling R22 systems with R22 are charging near $200 per pound. Many of these businesses purchased that R22 and stocked it when the cost was closer to $10 per pound. Talk about a markup!

Really, I think the HVAC hardware/equipment prices are all hidden to allow contractors to charge any price they want to. I haven't seen any itemized estimate (or a bill for that matter) that shows how much the materials are and how much the labor is. Personally, I think the law should require it because the markup on the materials, or the price of the materials, is part of what a customer needs to evaluate what the real quote is all about. All we see in my area is a bottom line number…no information as to hour many hours it going to take, disposal of old equipment, discount to customer for recovering their existing refrigerant, any information about duct work, returns etc. and of course more details about warranty on parts and labor. Service area Barrhaven??

Got quotes from three local HVAC companies for an install of a Mitsubishi split mini system (2 heads, total 42,000 BTU). Quotes came in at 10k, 12k, and 22k including demo of old compressor.

If you really want to earn people's trust ,why not do a video on the breakdown of your prices? A simple breakdown on what you charge for equipment and what percentage you upcharge equipment you buy for the customer. Also a breakdown of your hourly rate, trip charge etc….I think the average person when they find out your charging more than you paid for equipment (condensers, air handlers etc) get a bad taste in their mouths. A video explaining why you have too because of taxes, insurance etc… you know things the average person doesn't understand. One of the problems with the internet is people can find out rather easily I might add exactly what your cost is for things. So when you show up with a charge that's is more than what you paid ,some people react badly. Anyways just my 2 cents and request for what I think would be an excellent video and might just curb the misunderstanding that is out there. Thanks 😊

👍 I have to ask you about a thermostat that I had regrettably replaced. The old one (gas forced air heat) would heat up past the setting and reignite a little below, lowering the number of ignitions per hour. The new one ignites at least 5 or 6 times an hour more which I think would be less efficient and more wear and tear on the furnace. Most contractors claim ignorance if they still make thermostats like my old one. Do you know if they stopped making thermostats like my old one?
