Kalos tech Jessica uses the AccuTrak VPE-GN Ultrasonic Leak Detector kit to locate a leak in the field. The kit comes with the leak detector (with a "gooseneck"), noise-canceling headphones, and the product manual. The A/C unit featured in the video is a 5-ton Carrier system from 2003.
Jessica does a visual inspection first. The A-coil shows some signs of galvanic corrosion and has a few spots that feel oily to the touch. Oily spots may indicate leakage, so Jessica marks those up and knows to check them later.
Per the manufacturer's recommendation, Jessica starts checking for leaks by spraying the coil enough to make it damp. Then, she sprays some Big Blu on the coil to see if bubbles form. Sure enough, some microbubbles begin forming on the spots that Jessica marked. After that, she uses the AccuTrak VPE-GN Ultrasonic Leak Detector to confirm the leak, and it worked very well; Jessica compares its effectiveness to the Bacharach H-10 leak detector.
The AccuTrak Ultrasonic leak detector is not a traditional "sniffer." Instead of sniffing for traces of refrigerant, the Ultrasonic leak detector detects escaping nitrogen, which occurs naturally in our air. As such, you can use these leak detectors on systems without refrigerant; you'll still locate leaks.

Okay, doing my first really check with this accutrack ultrasonic leak - detector, it's amazing - and here it is - we've got the detector itself. We've got the noise canceling headphones user manual because rtfm, so we're going to really put it to the test, see how it does. So. What we're looking at is a 5 ton carrier system from 2003 nice big, a coil.

I started with a visual inspection. Um noted a few places that felt oily and we're gon na. Take a look at those. It's recommended that the coil be damp while doing the ultrasonic leak search.

So i got my spray bottle here and we're just gon na wet it down a bit, make sure it's nice and damp, it's not terribly hot, so it wasn't producing too much condensation all right. So i made a few marks um, where i noticed some sound on the coil. It all seems to be concentrated on this right hand, side. I am just going to um use some refrigeration technologies, big blue, see if we can get some bubbles going to verify all right.

So i have some bubbles. It's a a small leak, but that's a leak and uh yeah got a leak so to wrap this up. I started with the visual tactile inspection um felt that coil felt the oil there. Then i took out the accu-track ultrasonic leak detector.

It helped me find the leak it did the job it was wonderful. My husband tried it out. He found a leak on a system that was flat um. They charged it with 100 psi of nitrogen, and since it's not a sniffer, it's the ultrasonic, it located um the escaping air rather or the escaping nitrogen, rather than the refrigerant itself.

So on a system, that's flat, it's perfect me being me doubting myself, because i wasn't seeing bubbles, i wasn't making bubbles. I got the h10 out, it's the older model, so it has to warm up. So while i was letting that warm up, i looked at the outdoor unit, my condenser, nothing, nothing, it was fine, came back, visually saw bubbles, so um and and you'll see it. You saw it's very, very small bubbles, so micro leak, detector by big blue micro leak, detector by refrigeration technologies found a micro leak did what it was supposed to do.

Then moved um went ahead and verified with my h10 pro, since it was heated up, ready to go and verified the leak. Uh, i'm happy, i love the new leak detector. I love my old leak detector. It's just nice! If you come across a situation where you don't have refrigerant, you'll be able to still find a leak, all right guys thanks for watching our video, if you enjoyed it and got something out of it, if you wouldn't mind hitting the thumbs up button to like the Video subscribe to the channel and click the notifications bell to be notified.

Works great on finding leaking buttholes

    Good job Jess!!!

I guess we are taking your word for it? Its easy to use soap bubbles to find a leak on the front for the coil. I typically start by saturating the U bends. Most of the time its an installer joint or right there.

Missed it being used. Looks very interesting.

Now you can't live without your ultrasonic leak detector. Mine is now a need to have. Before i got it, is was nice to have.

Now get those torches out and fix it! I have noticed that ice melting sounds like a leak so can't check if any ice is present

Great job, those cant find leaks are a pain. But because the ultrasonic is a sensitive hearing device can you look for a leak on a extra noisy area like an airport or a diesel environment. Hmmm

Awesome job. I think Dawn dish soap and water works better than the Big Blue

I use mine with a small internal rechargeable battery powered speaker, so coworkers and customers can hear as well. You don't want to use an ultrasonic detector in a noisy environment anyway.
