HVAC Brands overview of the Ingersoll Rand residential brands: Trane, American Standard, RunTru, Ameristar, and OxBox.
Just a quick overview of the comparing these brands to one another all under the same parent company. Sometimes comparing apples to apples, you find that they are the exact same HVAC product with a different name on the label.

Hey guys before we get to the video, please click that subscribe button, hey guys, Joshua griffin, air serving the middle Peninsula and the Northern Neck of Virginia wanted to do sort of like a little series where we're getting more and more folks. Sending us messages - and you know maybe they're not in Griffin ears coverage area, but you know they like some of our content or they you know I'm becoming. I feel like the guy. That will just tell you like it is.

You know we're not trying to sell you something. You know that you don't want basically, and so because of that I wanted to do a series of videos talking about some of the different brands and, comparing you know, they're family of brands. If you want to call it that I found heating and air is kind of like cars, you know where you got GM, making all these different brands of cars, but it's still the same company, we're finding that with heating and air. More and more, where you have you know one parent company, but then they make hundreds of brands and so wanted to go through today.

The Train American Standard run true and Ameristar family of brands. If you will and so they're all a part of the same company and they're all owned by Ingersoll Rand, and I wanted to just touch base on a few of those what you're you know if you're comparing you know two different brands, I've heard customers say well, I just had a train guy here and you're talking about American Standard and what's the you know, what are we talking about here or whatever, and so I wanted to touch base on that. So, first of all, if you are in an area that offers more than one of these brands that we're talking about in this video, they are a lot of times. You know it's a different distribution, different parent coming so like the area that I live in American Standard which, by the way, if you're, watching this we're told and I've been to the factory and seen a made on the same assembly line.

American Standard and Trane are basically the equivalent the biggest difference you will see, sometimes as the train units come with, those hood tops, but now, as of the making of this video, you can actually get that as an addition onto an American Standard system. So that being said, there's really not a lot of difference between the two other than brand name they're made on the same assembly line. They might be painted different colors same parts, and so the difference that say like in our area is the suppliers, the distribution? If you will so in our particular area, Trane has a direct. You know from confirm the factory to consumer middleman, like they do the distribution themselves, whereas with American Standard they have a third-party supplier distribution company.

That is doing it and I think, there's pros and cons of both personally and my experience. I have liked having the middleman, because you might say: well, if you eliminate the middleman, the price is better. I don't know if that's true, in fact, I would maybe argue that the price is a little bit higher for the train line when you're comparing apples to apples. So that being said, what's the real difference there you know when you got that middleman there.
If the price isn't much better, eliminating the middleman, unlike when I'm dealing with the manufacturer directly and I've got 30 different people to call, and this person's in charge of this, this person's charge of that not sure it even who to talk to half the time and I've noticed that when there's a middleman involved, that's actually a good thing, because I could pick up the phone if something's wrong. I've got one person I can call and get this taken care of, get it straight and so again getting back to the family itself. The family of brands, if you will what's the real difference so as I said, Trane America standard or the and now they've come out with this run true brand within the last last year or two, and that is going to be trains builder-grade brand. So, just to back up a little bit years ago, it used to be Ameristar was trained and american standards builder-grade brand.

If you will and they were making them and the same factories, they were coming off the same assembly line and in some cases it was the same product. It might have been the lower end. You know 13 seer or 14 c or whatever, but it was. You know maybe more on the lower end of their product line, and then they just were rebranding it, and so then, for a number of years for the last several years, they actually shipped the dish that the manufacturing of the Ameristar brand over and to china, and So they made their Brent.

You know made that brand over there. We actually installed some of those. Some of them, you know, have been great. You know I don't have any complaints to say as far as the brand itself, but the main thing to understand if you're looking at these brands is there is a difference between train and American Standard and then they're run.

True and American Marist are brands. Does that mean there's other brands are bad. No, I'm not saying that it just means there's not as many bells and whistles there. You, usually you can't buy, but so high of a seer with the builder-grade brands.

But you know in the last couple years, they've now moved that back to America. So then we're being told that the run true and the Ameristar brands are now going to be made in America again. I think the main difference, though, if you're you know during the making of this video, if you're, comparing the the two and when i say the two, I mean train america standard and then there builder-grade run true or mare, star brands, the main difference other than probably The normal stuff - maybe one, has a little bit more of a durable grade, cabinet or whatever, but the main difference. I would say that we're seeing is the you know the train and American American standards.
They they pride themselves on that spine, Finkel. The advantages of that versus a slab coil, and I believe - and I could be wrong if you're, watching this and you're an installer and you're like no you're wrong on that, I'm just regurgitating what I'm being told and that is that the run true and they're Marist. Our brands, they're gon na have a slab, coil and there's outdoor units where, as the train and American standards have that spine fan coil. So I don't know if this helps you if you're comparing those brands.

I think the main thing that I would say, and I'm gon na say that say this time and time again is: if you're, I think that people focus on the brand more than they should. I think that you should be focusing more on the contractor. That's installing it. You can have two different contractors install the same exact system, one half tons of issues and the other one not and in a lot of cases, not always, but in a lot of cases it's because of the way it was installed and so that that's something to Keep in mind and and my point and telling you that is again, I'm gon na say this over and over again.

I think, if you're talking to a contractor and they're they're telling you about a brand or they're telling you about a product, I have always said you should ask: why are you selling what you're selling what what are your top 10 reasons or your top three reasons? Why you sell what you sell and me personally, if someone asked me that I've got a list of reasons why we sell what we sell? We I didn't inherit my business from my dad and I just saw the brand he always sold or whatever I didn't start Griffin, air and just so sold the brand that the last company I worked for. I just sell their brand now, just because that's what I'm used to or whatever we from the very GetGo, we tried multiple brands, we've been a by some of the companies, and we say you know you need to meet these this criteria, this these standards and to Be honest with you: some of them won't match it they, for whatever reason they they won't match that that level of standards in some cases. So when someone asked me, why do you so with you? So I can rattle off off-the-cuff ten reasons why I saw what we saw. Why I believe in what you know, what I believe or whatever, because we have we've tried other brands.

We we've tested them. We've ran them through the wringer. If you want to call it that, and my guys will even tell you my employees, they get a vote in this. You know.

I usually I have a staff meeting and we'll talk about different things, and one of the things we'll talk about is: what are we seeing? What do we? What do we think? What what do we need to address and what do we need to make better, and so obviously our goal is to install that system and for you to not have any issues you know I don't want. We should not know each other very well. If you're a customer of ours right, if, if I'm getting to where I see somebody more, you know we're getting to know each other, that's not a good thing right! So you don't want to know your heating and air guy that well, if they're good at their job, you know so anyway, if you have any questions. Click that subscribe button put it put a question in the comment area and if you're in our coverage area give us a call, we appreciate it hey guys last thing: if you are in the market for a new heating and air system, whether you're in our coverage Area or not, you got ta check out my new website, I put together the new HVAC guide and you can find it at new HVAC guide com I'll put a link to it down in the notes.

Trane was much better back in the 90s. Back then they were truly exceptional. Today Trane is not any better than any other brand on the market.

  2. Avataaar/Circle Created with python_avatars Hola! My videos says:

Hey Josh, this is very informative video, thank you. Since you mentioned on your other videos that brands do not make much of a difference when comparing same specs apples to apples, and that installations play an important part in the performance and longevity of the unit. I am in Dallas area and planning to replace my 19 y/o HVAC, my question is, how do I know which contractor will do the best installation? Do I just base it from the their respective customer reviews? I have about 3 contractors who have visited and done estimates, but all claimed they have the best installation team. Do you have a recommended contractor in my area?

Quick question, what are your thoughts on the older Ameristar 14 Seer 2.5 Ton Heat pump units? Thank you for all you do! 🙏🏿

Is $3250 installed a good price for a Trane XR14 no indoor coil? 3 1/2 ton. Just outside unit only. Are you in Kanata ?

I owned an American Standard 16 SEER 4 ton Heat Pump system; outdoor unit lasted 19 yrs. Indoor unit right now is about 26 y/o and still working; planning to get a replacement soon.

Don't recommend Heil, their junk. I've had mine for 7years and it's been worked on 3 times. Over 1000 in labor cost.

My HVAC tech suggest I go with RunTru 16 Seer unit plus the RunTru handler. I need my Lennox 28 year old system changed. Thank you for the videos. They are very helpful.

Got a quote the other day for a replacement on my 20 year old heat pump, ( tempstar). They quoted me $19k for a 2.5 ton Trane XV19 with tam9 AH
New ductwork and registers. I have 9 total ducts currently a spider box set up that's pretty old. This is a single story 1400 SQ ft house. Seems kind of steep imo. I have a other company coming to give an estimate tomorrow, they are an American Standard dealer.
My question is does the $19k seem about right?

I'd like your opinion please. San Antonio, Texas. Two-story house, two zonesupstaris/downstairs.
My 16-year-old builder grade Carrier is leaking coolant in the evaporator, and we are considering replacing the entire system. Both companies have lots of really high reviews on Google (take with a grain of salt if necessary) I'm torn between two bids which are both AHRI matched:

    Bid #1- Day & Night,
    Outdoor unit: NXA448GKA**,
    Indoor unit: EHD4X48AAL

So let me ask you this. If the sales person says we will sell you a Trane 16 for $10,900 and the installer shows up with an American Standard system I shouldn’t be concerned about the name being different?

  13. Avataaar/Circle Created with python_avatars Melt snowflakes says:

Good information! I've installed 2 Ameria star systems one ac only and a heat pump. The ac only 3 ton 14seer with a lg compressor runs like a champ, heat pump had a lemon reversing valve but other then that it's doing it job for $. The run tru has a spinefin coil I think 🤔 Service area Nepean??

  22. Avataaar/Circle Created with python_avatars Bonnie Chastain says:

Who makes Grand Aire and are they decent for a mobile home?

  23. Avataaar/Circle Created with python_avatars John Juarez says:

Hey Josh, the Ameristar units do now have a spine fin coil, and are made here in Texas at the Tyler plant. I agree with most of your comments, however, with so many manufacturers having coil leak issues I would suggest to you, now more than ever, that it’s important to go with a manufacturing company that has experience working with all aluminum products. The only manufacturers that have experience, to my knowledge, is the American Standard/Trane family. As you know they have ALWAYS had the spine fin coil in condensers. Everyone else has a learning curve to go through. There is a reason they have always been rated as best with fewest repairs. Now with so many people putting different names on low end units, you should go with something you know you can trust! Especially with the prices being what they are! We have seen Lennox loose a class action over Freon leaks, and many others are going through the same problems! As much as they cost, just buy a American Standard or Trane that will last 15-29 years.

  24. Avataaar/Circle Created with python_avatars Garald Weiss says:

When I call contractor I ask to bring EPA Universal, tank of dry nitrogen and recovery machine guess what from 10 companies only 1 show up. I 100% agree you need good contractor and it is hard to find them. Hey I do not mind to pay high bill but do it right.

  25. Avataaar/Circle Created with python_avatars Alt V7 says:

Really appreciate the context from your experience. Helps a lot. Gratefully. We have a 5 ton R-22 Ameristar with Gas Furnace that we are looking to swap out with a 4/5 Ton FIT or VRV from a ComfortPlus installer.

I just purchased an American Standard Silver Series 14 HVAC system for my condo on the southside. I paid extra for the immersion coating so it will take a week or so longer before a firm appointment can be set for installation. Hopefully, everything will work out fine with this brand and professional installation.

  33. Avataaar/Circle Created with python_avatars Jim Kirby says:

You can tell that this is bullshit when he claims Trane with middleman is equivalent to American Standard but doesn't simply list the prices!

  34. Avataaar/Circle Created with python_avatars Jules ODwyer says:

The Run Tru has a Spine Fin Coil put a few in also no pressure switches lil cheaper made but seems decent

  35. Avataaar/Circle Created with python_avatars actech2 says:

Trane dealer. Got convinced to use ameristar on a 12 unit building. So far have changed 9 of the evaporators due to leaks. The evap doesn’t come with a drain pan. You have to reuse drain pan and it cracks very easy from all the refrigerant oil in it. Makes the cheap plastic very brittle. Best packaging I’ve ever seen for an evap. Comes in a big wooden crate. But takes forever to get from China. Told our trane rep at heartland dso to not ever bring that kind of garbage to our attention.

  36. Avataaar/Circle Created with python_avatars Lost Beagle says:

    Good Afternoon –

I have a 12 year old Trane XL 16i heat pump with an indoor and outdoor unit. The outside unit sustained sudden and accidental damage to the coil. My HVAC contractor recommended replacing the entire outdoor unit rather than replacing the coil. They replaced it with a Trane XL i, model number 4TWX6048H1000BB. Looking at the Trane website, I can find all the different XL i models from the XL 14i to the XL 19i, but I can't find the plane XL i. Do you have any idea what this is? My HVAC contractor could not say anything other than the unit is an XL i compatible with my indoor unit

Enjoy the information your videos provide. At 2: 24 in the video did I understand correctly that the hood top is now an option on the American Standard models?
