This was a late evening walk in freezer service call that had an interesting defrost issue.

08:06 SATISFYING COIL CLEANING
12:41 CLSOING WORDS

This video is brought to you by sportlin quality, integrity and tradition. It's a thursday evening service call it's about what 4 35 o'clock walk-in freezer, not working um. I can see that the coil is all frozen up. Apparently this has been an issue for a while.

Oh yeah we're all frozen up in there. Let's have a look back here interesting and you see how the coil's not frozen up evenly. That leads me to believe it might be a refrigeration issue. So that's not good.

Let's get back here a little bit better! Oh yeah, that doesn't look good at all, but it could be a heater issue too. So, first and foremost, we got to get this guy defrosted, so we're going to shut off power and uh melt everything with a hose and then we'll diagnose and figure out. What's going on never had this happen before, but i can't get this blade off and i can't get this blade off. It's stripped um two of my allen, wrenches one of them was brand new.

What the heck i was able to get this one off, which is where the ice is the worst, so i should be able to work with it. We just you know it's putting a lot of stress on that motor connector, but hopefully it'll be okay. We're gon na defrost it real quick. I do this a bunch and i find that water is the fastest and the best thing for defrosting these.

You just have to be careful, though, because you don't want to get any water on the floor. Um see it drips right here, but you don't want it to uh to get down to the floor because it's a raised floor and if water gets underneath there it'll uh it'll, freeze and lift it up. So you just do it until the drain fills up. Then stop let it drain, then just keep rinsing and repeating so we got those two defrosted all the way through.

We can do everything from the front side. There's a little bit of plastic stuck like that plastic right. There was stuck back in the drain when it comes to this one. The fan guard is, is frozen in there, so i'm using my wand and it has a mist feature and it's very minimal water.

You know the motors are going to get wet. These ecm motors are somewhat water resistant. Not you know i wouldn't dunk them in water, but but that nist feature really does a good job. Doesn't splash too much? You get a very minimal spray and it's just trying to get the fan guard out.

Got this side. All defrosted, all the way through as i'm pointing something out, i realized i probably could have heated up the hubs or something like that, but i didn't need to because i was able to safely get the motor and blade out now it's not great putting a lot Of stress on that connector, but it is what it is still got a bunch of ice back in here. You always got to make sure you get the side panels completely defrosted or that ice will just build right back up into there. So we're gon na get this defrosted real, quick and then continue on.

Okay, we're all defrosted back in here, you didn't know this piece comes off two screws and it just moves out of the way and then it gives you the ability to get in there. While i was in here, though i i don't think this has anything to do with it icing up but check this out. This wire just looked funky to me this. This is the jumper wire look at how loose it is and then look up here like it's super loose, so we'll get some new crimp connectors on that.
I don't know what the dysfunction is with that, but it's not good. It's not a good connection. Um but again, i don't think that has anything to do with it icing up. We need to get over to the other side where the expansion builds up, make sure it's not iced up over there, too.

All right we're all back together. There is no ice over here but check this out. Look at this wire right here. That's our heater completely disconnected i'm pretty sure.

That's our heater yeah yeah, i'm almost positive, because the evaporative ammo is yeah. It's just like disconnected like barely making any contact right there. Huh, what a day huh all right, i fixed all the wiring, and i got the unit turned back on. I had to run that other wire in the front of the board because of the it was too short, but i fixed that um.

The next thing is that there's a twist timer on this thing, a pump down switch on the outside of the door, and i want to make sure that pump down switch is working so we're going to actuate it right now, yeah, it's working, it says, pump down. So that's good okay, so we got to figure out if it was just that wire that was broken or what caused this thing interesting. All right. The equipment is running.

It is running with a clear sight: glass um, the coil needs to be cleaned. I can feel a bunch of heat coming out of it. Yeah, it's pretty dirty inside there um - probably going to come back because we're on overtime right now, probably going to come back and wash all these coils looks like they need some filters for their acs too metal mesh filters are just falling out. We're gon na see.

If the unit comes down in temperature, um we'll test the defrost and then we'll go from there - well, that's odd it just pumped down and shut off shouldn't be it should be running full blast right now. What the heck happened here, i'm gon na go ahead and gauge up and then uh we'll go downstairs. Maybe someone turned that pump down switch came down here, no, it's in defrost, so it's not set up for demand. Defrost! It's set for uh time, defrost four times a day, so i don't know i guess the time clock inside figured.

It was time for it, but it's running so i might as well check the heaters to make sure they're all working right now, all right. So we have a total of one two three. We have four heaters on this guy sure, so we should be getting current on four wires on the h1 terminal. So that's one two three and one more to go last one right: it's kind of hard with one hand there we go right there, okay uh.

Why do i feel like i did one twice? I better do that again, but yeah. I don't feel comfortable with that. So there's one 1.91: okay, there's two three point: four eight and then here's one three three point: three: nine, no yeah we're good. I was thinking that there was only gon na, be one that was three amps, but no we're good.
I got them on then. The last one was the hard one, but i got that and then uh yeah. So all the heaters are working, so that's a plus so we're gon na um. I have to try to figure out if i can terminate defrost.

I think i can and then we'll get this thing to run and we'll watch it get cold. All that i did was hit reset and it turned off the defrost. So it's in the drain mode or the drip mode where it's gon na, let all the condensation drip off and then it'll start back up, we'll go upstairs and uh watch the refrigerant system turn on and check the pressures, even though i don't want to do it. We're going to go ahead and clean the condenser, so i'm going to use some of the viper uh venom pack, the bl or the yellow, condensed coil cleaner.

This is micro channel safe. That's the important thing! If we use the blue cleaner, which i have some tucked way back in there, if we use the blue cleaner um, it can eat away the coil, because it's the aluminum one it can just damage it beyond repair, so always want to make sure you're using the Right cleaners, we're just going to take the pump sprayer up, i've already poured some in there pump it up and i'm gon na grab the hoses and uh we'll uh try to knock this guy out all right. It's running and uh. It is 404a and we're running high.

It's only 75, maybe 80 at the most, so our condensing tempo over ambience a wee bit too high. So 80, 90 100. 110. We're at about 118., so yeah we're gon na go ahead and clean this guy for sure.

Okay, we're gon na be careful because i'm only cleaning from the outside in so we want to get the big surface stuff off, but i'm not going crazy spraying directly into it because it will go into the fan motors, so we're just going to get it wet And then once we get it wet then we'll apply some cleaner and let it sit - and i am also using hot water - you can see the stuff coming out of it. It's pretty nasty looking so all right we're going to get some cleaner on it. Now this pump sprayer is one of my favorite ones, because it foams up really good so just spray it on there get it all over the coil. Let it sit for a few minutes: it's not going to hurt anything, let it do its magic and then once we do that, then we'll uh, we'll rinse it off with the water and get this guy nice and clean it's just about done, while i'm waiting um.

Whenever i use my coil cleaning gun or this gun, i always clean it out, so i have fresh water in it. I've already rinsed it and then i always spray it. That's how i make my stuff last so long. Is you always clean the stuff out of it? Don't leave chemicals in it? You don't want to have the chance of content or mixing any chemicals either accidentally but yeah.
I always clean everything out nice and thoroughly um, and i am that nut. I take my hose. I wipe it down with the towel. I drain it roll it up properly, then put it away too every single time.

That way, i don't have to get a nasty hose on my shoulder or anything. So all right, this guy's just about ready, we're gon na. Do a rinse, oh yeah, this guy was dirty for sure again we're being careful not to spray direct into the motor, because i am only cleaning it from one side. One of the cool things about these micro channel coils is that they're super easy to clean and oftentimes typically doesn't require you getting from the other side, unlike a standard one that gets plugged up like that.

So this one's doing pretty good. It's coming out pretty dirty. So we're gon na keep rinsing and then we'll start this guy back up, even when i'm frustrated it's over time. I don't want to be here.

I'm still going to do the job properly. I quickly rinsed the other coils they weren't bad at all, and then we're rinsing down everything in front of here. So that way it doesn't suck back up on the condenser. It's all about doing it right because i'm not coming back.

You know i don't want to come back, i mean i haven't finished, diagnosing everything, but if i can prevent having to come back it's better that way. I got too much stuff going on right now too many places to be so many fires to put out so yeah, we'll just rinse all this stuff off, wash it all down the drain and then start this bad boy up. You can clearly see through the condenser now nice and good refrigerant pressures are looking a lot better um we're gon na. Let it come down in temperature verify everything else is good.

Uh sight glass is still clear. Although uh, i doubt that there's going to be a leak in the system, but it does have a head pressure control valve, but it doesn't bypass until 150 psi. So it's rare that you're ever going to see the thing even bypass because uh, the micro channel condenser and it's it's extremely rare but um. I don't think we're gon na - have a refrigerant problem.

I know that the the frost on the coil was a little funny, but i don't think it had anything to do with charge issues so, but i'm going to let it run for a little bit verify it comes down significantly. Let's see what the box temp is because i am connected right now, so the box temp's about 20 degrees right now and still dropping so it's gon na be a little while i have a feeling this thing's been down for a very long time, but we'll watch It and babysit it for a little bit longer. All right, i mean there's not really much more. I can do it's going to take.

I'm not going to see the whole thing come down to temperature, it's about 17 degrees right now, which tells me it's been. That way for a while, because it started at like 35 and then it just hit a brick wall at like 20 degrees, and it's just very slowly inching down and all the food in there soft. So it's gon na take a while to bring all that product back down into the sub freezing mode, but we're still running a clear sight. Glass.
If i can get my light to work, yep glass is still clear: no bubbles, everything's cool we're going to wrap this one up tell them to keep an eye on it all right. This thing's kicking butt. I got all the panels put back on we're gon na leave. It be tell them to keep the doors shut and uh yeah.

That's it on this one. This one started out as a walk-in freezer call, and i have to tell you that i was extremely frustrated because man, sometimes these customers, give you way too much information. So when i walked in the door, they were like. Oh yeah, this thing's been problematic for like two days and it's like, then.

Why am i out here on a thursday night? Why now you know it's one of those things, but it is what it is. I i bite my tongue and you know, play nice kind of a thing, but it's still frustrating right. So sometimes i'd rather them not tell me how long it's been down, because then it just doesn't feel like so much of a slap in a face. You know, but again i guess i should be thankful.

It's a service call right, and i am i'm thankful for the work but anyways. So this one started out as a walk-in freezer call obviously, and it was iced up okay. So when i de-iced it, you know again, i don't just go in there with blinders on you know, i'm doing my thing and yes, i do get into a routine when i do these calls, but still i'm doing my thing and i'm paying attention - and you know I found that loose wire on the h2 terminal to the n. You know the neutral or whatever or common, and - and i said i don't think that could be part of the problem, but actually it could have been because it was a heater issue right and that was connected to the heater terminals.

If i remember right so um that could have been part of the problem, but i think the main problem was on the relay on the um, the the qrc board. So that's a heat craft, uh, qrc, quick response controller, it's basically a dumbed down beacon system. So there's no communication with the rooftop equipment, so it's just a smart evaporator on a standard condensing unit. Okay and the smart evaporator on that circuit board has a a relay for the defrost circuit or for the heater wires, because this is an electric defrost system and that wire was comple, i mean almost completely disconnected.

It was barely hanging there just barely making a connection which i'm surprised it didn't short because running the heaters through, like five of the stranded wires of a bundle that might have you know, 30 or 40 stranded single wires in there. You would think that would be overheating like crazy and possibly melt that little bit of connection that was left, but regardless it broke off when i touched it okay, so i believe that was the main problem that the wire had broken off and unfortunately because the length Of the wire had to run it on the front of the board, but it is what it is. You know it still works the same, and then i repaired that wire going from the end terminal to the h2 terminal um. I believe it was h2 or h1.
Whatever it was so both of those, i believe where the issue now it has since been i'd, say four or five weeks since i did that call and we haven't had any other problems with it since um, so i'm pretty confident that was it, but you know I wanted to come back and wash all the other coils like i said in the video, but i was realizing you know. I don't have time to go back, you know, and things are slowing down now. It's funny how it can like hit a brick wall, because now we're basically almost running out of work. We still have work, but it's a lot of construction work.

We don't get. We haven't been getting a lot of service calls during the day because it's cooling off outside the weather - it's been in the 60s at night time, 50s at night time and then coming up into the 80s during the day. So this is our fall and we're going to go into our winter here soon, where we won't be hitting 80 anymore, we'll be hitting you know, 70 at the high or something like that which real i realize for those of you midwest up north back east. We don't know what cold is here in california.

This is our winter, okay, so but um we are heating that cooler weather. So we are going to get a slowdown and um, but you know it. It's still i'm thankful for all this work, but it can still get kind of frustrating when you get. You know these silly service calls and i try to be as proactive as possible.

So at the time you know i was like you know what i didn't want to be there. I didn't want to wash all the condensers, because i was there on an overtime call, but i just went ahead and did it because i just didn't have time to go back. You know so went ahead and washed them all off now. I i only showed it on film, but i cleaned all three of those condensers.

The acs were okay, for some reason: it's just the walk-ins that were really bad, but i cleaned all the condensers. Everything else seemed to be operating properly and we got the customer back up and running, but it's little things like this. This seems like the easiest service call in the world, but you know some people could get tripped up on it and it's just so important to remember to take a step back and look at the big picture. That's my mantra.

That's everything, and - and it really has gotten me to where i am at the point in my career - i am not the best, and nor will i ever be. There's certainly many other people much better, much smarter all that stuff than i right, but the best. I can do in my heart. What i know to be the best is to try right to try to improve, to try to grow every time.
I finish a service call guys. I look back on it and think how could i have done that better? That's that's! My biggest piece of advice to everybody out there advanced or a newbie you know apprentice coming into the trade is every time you finish a task reflect on that task. Think about it. How could i have done it better and then the next time, maybe you'll, think of something and you'll remember something and it'll improve the way that you handle these calls.

We always have room for improvement, so please take your time. Look at the big picture. Okay, trust me: it will help you in the long run. Yes, there's times that you're too busy to to take care of everything, but i mean you know what i mean.

You know when the time is right, take a step back and look at the big picture. Remember, there's nothing wrong with giving a big picture quote. It does not always mean that the customer is going to approve that big picture quote, but at least you did your due diligence so that way, when they don't approve the big picture quote, and then they call you back a couple weeks later, because it's still not Working right you can say you know what you don't be a jerk about it, but you can say hey i tried to get you to. Let me fix that then, but you didn't want to you.

Have it in writing, you have it in the quote. So always take your time and do it right, okay, as much as possible, you know there is there is a time and place for that, but i really appreciate you guys making it to the end. It's so humbling. Remember guys we got a lot of craziness going on and i've been talking about this a lot lately in my videos and i've been posting about it on social media.

We have so much craziness going on in this world right now, just a simple random act of kindness. It doesn't have to be anything crazy, just simply holding the door open. You know picking something up off the floor, that someone dropped, that they don't want to have to bend down to get. You know just silly little things it could be so superficial, but it might change someone's day for real the simplest stuff that we may not even think is a big deal may make someone's day someone could be having the worst day and you just simply holding the Door open for them could make their day or make their day just just a tiny bit better.

For that split instant, we have no idea what is going on in other people's lives. I don't know what's going on in yours, you don't know. What's going on in mind, you have a perception of what's going on in mind right, but i don't put my entire life on these videos. I put a little glimpse of it.

There's all kinds of stuff going on behind the scenes right and the same goes for everybody. I'm sure the same goes for you too. The simplest act of kindness can make someone's day so much better and it could be just the simplest thing guys. Just just try.
Just remember spread that kindness share the love, remember to be kind to one another. We just need that. There's so much turmoil so much craziness. It's just just try just try.

Okay, please for me. Just try! That's the only thing i ask of you guys if you haven't already please consider subscribing to this channel all right. I try to put this information out there just to share my knowledge. Follow me on social media, i'm all the all the different platforms that hvacr videos.

It's super easy to find me: okay, um, if you haven't already please check out my website hvacrvideos.com, it's a cool way to help support the channel. You know yes, youtube does give me ad revenue and stuff like that, but you know it always helps to spread the message. I have some t-shirts, some hats, some beanies, some sweatshirts uh, all that different stuff available on my website. Hvacrvideos.Com.

I try not to step on it too much, but you know it helps to keep us busy and you know, share the little bit of uh knowledge with everybody right and to share the idea and the the whole passion that i have with the whole. Big picture. Diagnosis right, so, if you are interested just check out the website help to support the channel, there's a couple other ways to support the channel. There's links in the show notes to all of them.

The easiest way is just watch the videos from beginning to end without skipping through anything. That's the simplest way guys it doesn't cost you a single thing. Okay, truetechtools.com is a partner of mine and they've set up an affiliate code. If you use the affiliate code, big picture, one word: you can save eight percent on your order and i get a small commission when you do that and you get tools right at a great price.

In my opinion, i love true tech tools. They're great. They have great stock when they can understand we're going through craziness right now and it's hard to get things so don't be surprised if things are you know, running low or taking a little bit longer to ship. That's just the way everything's working right now, um.

You can also support the channel on patreon uh links in the show notes on youtube, channel memberships. There's a link in the show notes, uh paypal, all those different methods. Okay, i really really appreciate you guys. Thank you.

So very much and we will catch you on the next one: okay.

I don't do AC, but I've been watching all of your videos for months. What I love the most is that you keep it real, make mistakes and own them, and alwasy strive to do better. I do the same with my work. That is all we can do. Keep striving. Keep learning and improving. And, doing all that while maintaining a positive attitude and outlook despite work and life's many frustrations. Thanks for doing what you do.

Could you touch more on what goes through your head when your looking at a frosted/frozen coil? Like TXV frozen – low refer/bad TXV… or top frozen bottom isn’t… etc etc. I know nothings means this or that is definitely the issue till you inspect stuff. But what does the look of the frost tell you to check first?

    Thanks Chris!

Great video my west coast utube friend! I'm in Philly n I'm not looking forward to another winter. They absolutely blow as u get older. Snow was fun when u got off from school but working n driving in it is no fun. I don't mind so much except for the rookies out on the road concern me. Stay safe n positive 🙏

After working in multiple kitchens over the years, and seeing different Walk-ins. watching your videos really gives me some perspective on which kitchens really look after their stuff. Most kitchens with constant walk-in problems was due to defrosting problems and the tech they sent never took this level of attention and detail to do this level of work you provide. Dude you are awesome. Looking to solve the next one on my own hopefully lol. Great videos man.

  18. Avataaar/Circle Created with python_avatars Mr Sentinel says:

As a customer, sometimes we give those late calls because #1 were not sure if the equipment is actually going bad or not until more than a day passes by with the same symptoms and #2 we have so much other stuff to do that we forget to check again.

  19. Avataaar/Circle Created with python_avatars Randal Richter says:

Hi Chris, in a situation like this, bungee cords would work wonders on holding the motors, so you are not putting too much strain on the wires. Just a thought. Great video as always. I'm not in the industry but I love learning about new things. Keep up the great work!
    Hello from Wisconsin!

I’m always rolling up my hose with a rag in hand so it’s not dirty. Glad to see I’m not the only one doing that. But I got hired on as a refrigeration and air conditioning tech for a company. Any tips for the switch from resi to commercial? Service area Nepean??

  27. Avataaar/Circle Created with python_avatars The Dane says:

Hi chris. a tip. Dont insulate the drain and let the drain heat run all the time.
Connect drain heater to defrost heaters, and run it together, no insulation on drain pipe. Works best.
also door switch which disconnect fans and solenoid.
    Good find with the wire.
Other tip , i know the frustation. but i tell myself. they pay my overtime and im gonna take my time , and enjoy my work. Get into that mindset _D

Not that it has anything to do with the price of beans in China, but latex gloves always freaked me out while working around live power. Slip and melt the glove to your skin? Lol Great work as usual. I’m keeping your home town taken care of until you leave Cali!

  33. Avataaar/Circle Created with python_avatars ForceablePizza says:

i know you probably won't admit it, but i say you are the best, not because you know everything, but because you don't know everything, and you know you don't know everything. when you make mistakes, you own them, and you put them them in the videos for others to learn from. and you are giving your knowledge out for free and asking virtually nothing in return. yes, you are the best. i'd rather hire you to work on something that i know you've never seen before than i had hire someone who deals with it on a daily basis because i know that you will figure it out, you will fix it, and it'll be right. i can't trust the guy that does it everyday to do that, that's just the world we live in these days. Service area Kanata??

  34. Avataaar/Circle Created with python_avatars DashCamAndy says:

I'm fairly comfortable in saying that poorly-crimped wire was the problem, and that the unit iced up simply because the heaters never got powered. You wouldn't have an arc from high amperage if it pulled far enough out of the terminal to be fully-disconnected. Would the "brain" notice this, or is it a simple "dumb-logic" on-off circuit?

  35. Avataaar/Circle Created with python_avatars anthony gehman says:

I don't work with this industry at all. I drive a tow truck. But seeing how your world operates is always fascinating. I've been watching for years now and I'm loving it. Are you in Barrhaven ?

  36. Avataaar/Circle Created with python_avatars JM SometimeWoodWorker says:

Quit often machinery will develop a temporary fault that clears itself given a little time. So not calling as soon as there is a problem is often the best approach. I don’t say that this is best for refrigerant but it will partly explain why you don’t get immediate calls, not to mention that if they are crazy busy a service call may get a lower priority. Are you in Ottawa ?

  37. Avataaar/Circle Created with python_avatars SMITH’S HVACR says:

Awesome 📹… what’s the link to your water hose wand ?

  38. Avataaar/Circle Created with python_avatars DomManInT1 says:

If you are charging more money for overtime (after hours) service calls, why would you ever be upset about it?

  42. Avataaar/Circle Created with python_avatars Brad Knick says:

I have this little steamer that I used to de-ice my A-coil…I am not in the trade, just curious if that might work for those no water, difficult situations.

  43. Avataaar/Circle Created with python_avatars MultiMightyQuinn says:

Good fix, and I agree with you on being kind. It costs you a few seconds but it helps both of you. Keep up the great work, thanks for taking us with you!

  44. Avataaar/Circle Created with python_avatars Joseph Morgan says:

Hey Chris, love the video. I used to use the wand on my hose but got tired of finding a hot water source. I have a steam backpack now and it works so much faster than the water. What are your thoughts?
