This video is brought to you by spore'ln quality, integrity and tradition. This is the exhaust fan that I had a horrible time where the motor failed. It's a direct drive motor down there. It's a captive air one.
This was at the restaurant. I made a video on this where the motor failed. It was a Saturday, it was a nightmare and I ended up changing the fan because I was realistic. Looking at it realized - and I didn't have the motor and even if I could get the motor I needed to get this restaurant up and running, and I was kind of like confused as to how this fan could ever work because as far as servicing it.
Because of the way you've got the hub for the wheel is right there and then you have the actual. I shouldn't say the hub: that's the other side of the wheel, but the actual hub is down here now I pulled the set screws out on site, but I just had no way of getting this apart without damaging it, because if you take a piece of wood And try to pry this is an aluminum wheel, you're gon na bend it and then, if you pry right here and you use a little turn these little air vanes we're gon na bend too. So I was a problem, so I had an idea - and I want to show you guys how this is gon na work, because I think this is gon na be great. What we have here is airbags, so what I'm gon na do is I'm gon na put this little piece of wood right here evenly under multiple of those little turning vanes or whatever those are and put the airbag underneath and we're gon na put an airbag on Each side and we're gon na see if we can lift this wheel off.
I have a feeling: it'll come off like butter, because it's gon na be even pressure and these airbags. That says they put a 300 pounds of force if that's correct all right. So all I'm doing is pumping these things. I don't know if you guys can see them or not, but I'm just hand pumping they're evenly spaced on this wheel.
So, let's see, if this wheel, pops off yep, look at how easy that has popped right off done. Man I wish I had this that day. Well, I didn't have the motor, so I couldn't really change it. Anyways it was easier, but if you guys get a chance pick up, some of these airbag tools didn't damage anything bottom, the wheel, these little veins and everything are nice and safe, just a quick little tool tip, I guess or whatever I thought.
This is a really cool tool. I had thought about this and I've seen them at the hardware store, I'm actually gon na throw an Amazon link down on the bottom, because I think there's a better deal on Amazon, where you get a bunch of them, but um. You can pick these up at Home Depot. I don't know if any other hardware stores will have them, but this is it.
It was like 20-something bucks, 15 bucks, something like that was really cheap, but I noticed in searching on Amazon there's a deal. We get like three different size: air bags for like 25 bucks, or something like that so there'll be an affiliate link down on the bottom feel free to check it out. I could think of all kinds of uses for these heck if you've ever seen when you get locked to your car and the locksmith will come the triple-a, dude or whatever will come and use these to get in your door, but leveling equipment. I could imagine using those on doors if you're setting walk-in doors, freezer doors stuff like that you can throw those under there, lift them up, there's all kinds of uses and so check them out all right. Well now I saw this 😀 Even better solution to the ones I suggested in the previous video where this problem came up, but of course better to always have more options than needed, so you are not the one left without a chair when the fan stops 🙂
That is way better then having two guys hold up the unit and having another guy take a punch and knock the shaft out of the wheel and then have the motor and framework hit one of the guys on the foot… good application of the tool

Cool tip. Thanks. When I needed to separate the wheel from that assembly I slid two pieces of wood like yours but longer under the wheel and hanged the whole thing in the air with wood going from one tall garbage can to another. Then used large screw driver and hammer to hit that shaft end from the top and everything fell to the floor only wheel left on the wood planks.

The ones at Home Depot are pressure-tested and the ones from Amazon or not

I have a set of those, we use them to seperate radio tower joints so we no longer have to do the scissors jack and hammer method which can damage the towers rungs.

I know exactly what you talking about with those exhaust fan assemblies. I have atleast a dozen of those direct drive style exhaust fans at my school district. If the wheel is froze on and you can't get off those wheels damage so easy. I end up buying whole new assembly. Great idea for removal. I will be picking them up .. Are you in Kanata ?

That's a great trick.
The other thing is if you have a bad motor but need to save the wheel cut the motor shaft with a long sawzall blade. Once you cut the wheel off you can drive the shaft outof the wheel

I have two of these and I used one today to lift up a 2hp blower motor that is mounted sideways* in a large air handler. It made it easy to take out the lower bolts out of the old blower motor(It lifted the mount to the point where I could used my ratchet wrench) and extremely easy to put the bolts in for the new blower motor . Great video, this will help many techs/installers faster on the heavy jobs.
About to do this same job glad you showed us this. I do question why they would put the captive air in such a ridiculous place whereas come time to service the motor is buried in ducting to the point where they only way to access said captive air is within the duct work itself smh.

As I said on the previous video, I have had limited success. Sometimes it pops right off. Sometimes you fight for an hour. Sometimes you throw it off the roof.
