This is a video where I combined two different service calls on two different exhaust fans at the same restaurant location. Bot fans are in bad shape and had electrical shorts caused by exhaust fan vibrations.

This video is brought to you by spore'ln quality, integrity and tradition. Alright, real quick, I just wanted to. Let you guys know that there's gon na be two clips in this video from two different service calls. They actually are both at the same restaurant location within about three weeks of each other.

So, just to give some context today we had a service call on an exhaust fan at a restaurant. It's not working! Oh that's funny! Okay, the fans who started running the manager laid it on the ground because the fan wasn't working and I just came up here right now and it wasn't right and then it just started. I just makes me laugh all right. Well, I'm gon na dive into it.

Put the pan back on there and see what's going on all right, so I pushed the fan back up on the curb and there was enough slack to be able to pull the electrical switch out. So I can take the cover off. Also, look at that. It's been melting that, but it doesn't look like the wires are burned, so anyways we're gon na at least get this going.

This fan looks really dirty, I'm sorry, the the motor events look really dirty, and what I noticed is that the motor is extremely hot. So it's almost like it's going off on some sort of in thermal overload, because when I walked up it wasn't running and the fan was laying on the ground right and again. Just to reiterate, the manager did that to try to let the smoke out of the building, but when I all of a sudden before I even did me think the fan turned on and started running. So, as I was trying to get to the motor nameplate down here, which is tucked way back in here to be able to see what the amp draw is, I noticed that that motor is so flippin hot.

I can't even keep my hand on it. Ok, so we're gon na go ahead and pull the cover off the electrical switch test, three-phase power, and then now we know what the r-la is on the motor. So we can see our the full load amps. Actually, so we can see what it should be running.

I have a hunch that maybe we might have lost the leg of power and it might be single phasing, but we're gon na find out right now. Let's switch looks really bad. It doesn't look like there's a short there, but it does not look good all right. So before we turn power on we're going to test power coming into the switch, we should have three-phase power and I have a feeling we're single-phase in our motor.

So it's 205 to a four, so we've got three-phase power coming in, so the next thing we need to do is we obviously need to turn power on, but before we do that we want to visually inspect everything, and this switch is kind of tripping me out. It doesn't look good, look at there's something funky down here. Look right down here, right there kind of hard, but there's something funky going on in there. I think we might have an electrical short going to the fan.

The bread in here there's an electrical short in there. I could see it, but the camera may not be picking it up. I don't know why it's not tripping a breaker, it might have just broke the entire line, but I'm pretty confident we are single-phase and that thing's been our key and it tripped or something happened here. What's tripping me out, though, as to why it was running when I walked up, I have a feeling: it only has two legs of power, so we're gon na go ahead and find the breaker for this kill it and we're gon na fix this electrical short and Then proceed from there.
If we look at my motor starters, someone disconnected the motor starter, the overload portion for that exhaust fan - I'm pretty sure this is that one, so I'm gon na get them running, but we're gon na have to put a new motor starter in here too, and it Was kind of scary because I was in here trying to diagnose this - I couldn't get it on film, but I was in here trying to diagnose this, and I moved this wire right here and it came out of that motor starter, so yeah not fun when it's Energized but I was able to get it back in and everything's running, but yeah, so I need to disconnect power to this one. I'm gon na go find a brake before it all right. So I disconnected power. It's a dead circuit now so now we can pull it apart and figure out what was going on still really strange, but I'll dive into it can all sketchy that looks so from the looks of it.

It's not rounded out at the moment, and I have a feeling, then what might have been happening is we were still delivering voltage, but we might have been because it's going through so little strands a wire, it might have been overheating or something it's hard to say. We still don't know if that motors, good or anything, so I'm gon na let the motor cool off while I'm redoing this electrical and then we got ta fire it up and see if it even works. This is just temporary to make sure everything was good. There's no ground wire in this box wasn't grounded to the bottom of the unit.

So there's a bunch of things running through my head about what could have been going on because we lost the lake for sure and it looked like it was grounded out on the conduit but anyways. I don't know if there was a direct short and just nobody got shocked. Yet it's a very interesting situation, so I turned it back on the confirmed. Rotation is correct and I'm gon na.

Let it run for about ten minutes like this, and if everything's good and the motor doesn't over amp, we will put it together cleanly so that we had safe and I'll come back and replace the motor starter. I'm gon na put in a new motor, no matter what, because it was single-phase and I'm pretty sure and won't fix all the condo. I put a new disconnect switch because I don't like this. I anyway, that's the whole thing, so I'm just watching it right now.

It's running 3.8 amps and we're allowed to run 4.8, so I wrote it down right there, so we're gon na. Let it run for a few minutes, make sure it doesn't overheat. And if that's the case, then we're gon na, like I said, they'll, be good for the day, it's a Sunday afternoon right now, so so I shut it back down to go ahead and fix the electrical again. This is a very temporary situation.
I will be back we're gon na put a new pulley on it too, put a new motor starter, we'll redo all this there's like a slight vibration, so I'm gon na have them get their grease cleaners out here and clean up. The pan will grease. I mean this thing will just get it overall, I'd love to tell them to change the fan, but you know they're not going to do that. Today we have a complaint of an exhaust fan, not working.

This is their fryer exhaust fan and when I come up to it, the first thing I noticed it first off. I turn the switch off okay yeah. It was not turning on and the motors, not hot, but I turned it off just to be safe belts. Tight.

It's not broken the shaft on the wheel, spins, there's no play and the bearings. So it's obviously gon na be some kind of a power related issue, so I'm gon na go ahead and pull the switch cover check for three-phase power and then after I do that. Well, the quality go down to the motor starters and see where those are who's gon na punky on that, so I was suspect of this switch because we're not let's burn, and then I pulled over the cover and you can see some pawn marks on the back Of this switch cover and down in here, looks like we have a broken wire, so so I'm down here at the motor starter panel, we're investigating these motor starters and if you look at them right here where it says tripped there'll be a yellow indicator for trips. Nothing that was missing the overload figure and that one's tripped, okay, so I've isolated the power upstairs I've repaired, the electrical short and now we're gon na reset it.

So now I should have three-phase power on the roof. We'll go double-check that so here's my switch. I pulled it out. I repaired the electrical short redid, the SGA cord, going to the motor check for three-phase power coming in away joy, so we have proper voltage coming in now.

So now we need to bump the motor and check the rotation, because I very easily could have reversed the rotation now. Looking at this wheel, it's kind of hard to see the rotation should be counterclockwise. We bump it. Our rotation is clockwise, that's hard to see on that.

The wrong way. Usually you can look down in the fan too, and they'll usually be a indicator telling you the direction, but if you're working on exhaust fans, you really need to look at them and understand how they work, because you can't rely on arrows to tell you which way. It's got a spin now we're gon na check rotation. It's kind of hard to see you can see the wheel down there see it rotate.

I need it to spin this way, but to suck the air out of the building, so that is going to be clockwise rotation. That's the rotation, we're submitting this clockwise, so we're good. So two separate service calls at the same restaurant location, very similar issues. Okay, exhaust fan electrical shorts that were likely caused by by by vibrations.
I went ahead and actually got the restaurant to approve one exhaust fan replacement and I'm working on the second. So that way we can get these both replaced these fans. What we're noticing is a systemic failure rate and it's all kind of the same stuff. The fans themselves are just wearing out they're all from about 2004, so they're, pretty old exhaust fans, and it's just time you know anyways.

You know it's the restaurants decision to decide whether or not they want to replace them. So I just give them the facts say it's gon na cost this much money and then let them make the decisions on what they want to do so, like I said they already replaced one I'm working on the second thing. The other thing I want to point out is: is you know when you walk up to these at least my method of approach? When I walk up to these exhaust fans, is I don't start flipping switches and checking things I mean you know turning them on resetting breakers. I always like to go look for direct shorts to ground.

First, look for obvious electrical issues! That's why I investigate pull covers off. You know, in my experience and - and I say experience because I've made these mistakes in the past. If you go in there and just start flipping switches and resetting breakers you're gon na find an electrical short, but you might cause other damage or possibly hurt someone. So that's why I like to go through things thoroughly before, and you guys see that in my methods, you know testing voltage, you know when I go reset a breaker.

I always turn the switch off on the roof. So that way it doesn't energize the fan. While I'm not up there, because if there is a direct short that I couldn't see, I want to see it when I'm up there by resetting a switch or something you know in front of it just little things like that. Okay, I really appreciate you guys taking the time to watch these videos.

Do me a favor. Give me a thumbs up. Leave me a comment down in the YouTube comments and if you have any questions or anything like that, send me an email, HVAC, our videos, a gmail comment, greatly appreciate it and I try to respond, and I at least read every comment, especially on YouTube. I don't necessarily respond.

All of them would have been doing is doing a lot of responses on my live streams on Monday nights. So if you don't already know, I do a live stream. Every Monday night on my youtube channel so long as there's no problems with work or anything like that. But I can't make it.

But I do live streams at a 5 p.m. West Coast time, which would be what 8 p.m. East Coast time so yeah. And I try to answer as many of the questions on there live so that way everybody can see the questions and you know answers and all that stuff so really appreciate it and we will catch you guys on the next one.
Okay.

East coast all switches and controls are in weather proof boxes outside the exhaust! The motor connections are required to be properly terminated in a conduit to the external box! It leaves the possibility of a short outside of the combustible area. Service area Orleans??

That first one was a clear case of 'Oh the fan is tripping? Do we A, work out why its tripping and fix it? Or B, remove the overload protection unit cos its annoying'

Give the poor ground that one had and all the grease around could early turn into a fire.

Actually reminds me of a friend who too the earth wire off a device because it kept tripping the RCD without any idea about why i was tripping.
