This was a service call on a walk in freezer that was too warm, I initially found that the unit was working when I arrived and I found that the pump down twist timer was likely the cause of the service call because it was sticking, as usual looking at the big picture I found several other problems including the defrost clock, fan guards and fan brackets, and the low pressure control.

This video is brought to you by spore'ln quality, integrity and tradition, so we got a service call on a walk-in freezer today. This is what I see there's a little bit of frost on the back of the coil. It's like the evaporator fan motors aren't running or something because I can hear the condensing unit. I think running.
It's not frozen solid, but it's frosty. So I actually found that this twist timer was why the fans weren't running. So I turned the twist timer on, but we've still got some ice accumulation, so I'm gon na throw it through a defrost and then we're gon na check out the system and see what's going on so came up here to the condensing unit it was running. I threw it into a really long defrost.
I just changed the defrost time to 70 minutes. It was set for 30, which is correct. The clock did not have the right time on it. I don't know if that means we have a bad clock or not, but we'll look into that.
But the other thing I noticed too - and I wasn't able to get it on film - was that this thing was pulling into a vacuum and the pressure control wasn't turning it off and I just had to whack the pressure control. So we've definitely got a pressure control going bad, but that's not going to cause a freeze-up issue like we have that's just another problem, so we're gon na. Let this thing defrost I'll, go down there and check all the heat it. So it's not too bad a little bit of frost, but when it was running I noticed the fan motors we're having a hard time moving the air.
This one has a little ball of ice, so it looks like it's been a problem for a while and then look at this. I go to take the fan guard off in the freaking bracket. Breaks. That's great, I think it'll be okay, because it's still somewhat strong.
I've still got a defrosting right now. I'm just gon na get this big chunk out of here real quick while the defrost heaters are still doing their job and then I'm also gon na test. All the defrost heaters over here with my meter so make sure they're all working okay. So this thing is beat down this coil you can see.
There's like all things are: busted screws are in the wrong spot because the anyways it's just trashed. I got it all defrosted. The drain was plugged up because a homeless person lives on the other side of this wall. I'll, take you over there in a minute.
It's been with the drain pee traps, and this and off of it there was stuck in it. Whatever dude, so I blew it out temporarily we're going to need motor brackets fan guards and then some stuff up on the roof, we'll go up there. Dual pressure control time clock I put a twist timer on it right now, because I timed the twist timer and it was hanging up so put a twist timer on it. I'm gon na get them going right now and then we'll talk to the customer.
Okay, put a new defrost clock on here, shut it up the way that we need it yeah and that's right. We're gon na talk to customer. I made some temporary adjustments to the pressure switch. She needs to be replaced, but it's spreading. I don't want to deal with it right now. The sight glass does clear up it's flashing right now, but the coil fans probably tell the customer to keep an eye on it and we'll talk to him about replacing that pressure switch. Here's all the homeless, guys stuff on the other side of that walk-in freezer kind of a pain in the butt okay. So we are back we're gon na go ahead and replace the fan guards and motor brackets and then check out that low-pressure control on the roof.
Alright, new fan guards new fan, I'm sorry, yeah new fan guards new motor brackets, the blades and motors are fairly new. It's just the brackets were all busted up like you guys saw so I ended up using wingnut. So I'm gon na try that out and see they're tight. Just hopefully they don't back off.
Cuz it'll make it easier. We have to de-ice this thing a lot, so anything we can do to save a few minutes. I guess is kind of cool, so we'll see how that goes. I'm gon na jump up on the roof and hit that pressure control up right now, alright, so we are gon na change, this low pressure control wall.
The system still has pressure in it. What I did was, I went ahead and pump the system down at the liquid line receiver to about 9 psi. So I front seated the liquid line receiver valve then I'm gon na go ahead and remove it with that small amount of pressure, the capillary for the pressure control put a cap on it, change the low pressure control then put the new pressure control right back on Wallets still under pressure, yes, there's a negligible amount of air inside the capillary tube for the pressure control, but can't always be perfect. Sometimes you got to do what you got to do you, that's that things in place are interesting.
It takes a piece of EMT tightens down on see it's like a EMT with the nut and then there's a chingus on the bottom and that same chingus on the top. It's kind of a cool little thing. So the new one had like a right angle, fitting on the bottom of the capillary tube this one wall. So it's gon na have to kind of sit back here.
A little bit I'll have to you know, blend this up a little bit here like that. Don't do something like that flare, not just on the surface where the flares gon na hit has been a dialogue for lubrication purposes. Hold this fitting. You just put the tiniest bit on the threads again we're doing this under pressure, so we don't have to vacuum it down.
Yes, there's gon na be the tiniest bit of air in there and the capillary there's nothing to do about it. Click torque wrench in my home yeah, so the preliminary setting on the pressure control a permanent one in a few preliminary wan na just set it based off the numbers on the control and then we'll watch the actual, cutting and cut out so on this guy right. Here we wanted to cut in about 20 psi cut out about five psi, give or take okay and then, before I energized power, I'm going to change this context. I'm gon na know how to tighten those down without over-tightening them. Again, I joke around a little torque wrench clicks in my elbow. You know you just you can feel it after you've done it for so long and there's also instances in certain things where you need to use a torque wrench, but on this, if you just kind of can feel you know you don't over, tighten it, but you Tighten it enough that it's not going to back off. We also gon na, be careful too, because if you push the wire up and you tighten down on the jacket, we might have arcing, because the wire won't touch all the way and will intermittently arc. That's not good I'll show you guys a trick to once you get these.
Tighten these things down to make sure that they're not going to back off and come loose of it so once you've tortured, sighing, that's the freeway! What you do is just lose some tight line, loose them, tighten them and each time you do that what you're doing is you're smashing the wire down you're, ensuring that it's not gon na come undone. I call it running, tries works good for setscrews, so you tight me snug loosen tight and loose and tight and you get more turns out of it. They're so perfect example tighten loosen tight, smash the wire down that way it doesn't come loose. Tighten! So that's like snug loosen, okay, we're, nice and snug, and things back in here - that's gon na short out, though these wires a bunch of extra screws laying in the bottom this unit we're going to get okay, everything's good there, okay, so we're gon na do is Click it outta defrost, watch our pressures and see where we turn on we cut in about 22 psi.
That's about right! We're gon na go ahead and pump it down and see where it cuts out. Yeah five psi, that's about where I want it, so we're good on that contactors working, good pressure, control set right, so we're going to set the time on this defrost clock and then make sure everything else is working with a box. So the original service call was the walk-in freezer was not maintaining temperature, and what I found when I arrived was that the unit was working okay, but I did see some ice buildup and so I kind of had to investigate a little bit more and what I Figured out was going on was they actually had a bad? Well, they had a couple things going on, but the twist timer on the outside of the walk-in freezer was not keeping the right time. Okay and we used that twist timer as a pump down.
So it's a when they turn it. It's a fifteen minute timer and it pumps the system down for 15 minutes, and we use that at that particular restaurant, because they have a lot of freeze up problems because the cooks are using that freezer. As like a reaching cooler they're in and out all the time, so we put that twist timer on there to basically open thus Illinois 12 coil and pump it down, and what we figured out was that the twist timer wasn't maintaining the correct time. So basically, you turn it to the 15 minute interval and it would run for 45 minutes to an hour before it would turn thus Illinois belt back on. So that was the first thing I did was I changed that twist timer and then I kind of investigated again big-picture diagnosis as usual investigated everything. Okay, I saw that ice buildup on the coils went ahead and found that the defrost clock wasn't keeping time changed. The defrost clock found that the fan blade or the fan brackets and guards were busted, so I went ahead and change those cleared. The drain, like I said, also saw that the compressor contactor had a lot of pitting and it looked like it had been arcing.
So I changed the compressor contactor adjusted the low-pressure control temporarily then came back and replaced the low-pressure control. So it was just like you know. You opened the door of Pandora's box and it just keeps going right so anyways again going as I usually do big-picture diagnosis. I looked at everything I gave the customer all the options.
I am surprised, they didn't want to change that equipment, but hey. I just do what I'm told and I quoted them a price and they said yay so went ahead and fixed it all up. That was that freezer repair was probably about a month or two ago, this one's been sitting in my hard drive for a while, but everything else is working properly on it. We really haven't had any other problems.
I think we had to go out one more time. Oh and that's the other thing too, I didn't get it on film, but I did fix the drain. I don't know how long its last that way, because again there was the homeless person on the back. So you know, I don't know if he's gon na bust the drain off again, but again, I'm not gon na.
You know, try to reinvent the wheel and try to solve for all those problems. You know to prevent the homeless person, because I mean you know. Inevitably, the shopping mall should be keeping that homeless person out of there. So I just put the drain back the way that it was in hopes that he doesn't rip it off again.
We don't use PVC drains really, so it is copper, so I wouldn't be surprised if he rips it off again, but you know we can only do what we can do. Could u just turn off compressor n front seat suction service valve to change low pressure control? N when 2 ports on service valve, the port closest to stem is for gauges n furthest from stem is for constant psi, correct ?

A wireless lav mic would greatly help your audio I just found this out myself attempting to make YouTube videos where I found really suck and with very low audio. You don’t have to buy the real expensive ones the Chinese knock off‘s are really excellent actually for about $119 you hook up to your phone or camera and get crisp clear loud audio. Is there any reason why you couldn't possibly use an ICM fan speed modulation control to regulate head pressure? I like them for comfort cooling applications because there's no need to use a flare fitting or swivel tee. I also like that there's less on/off operation. They want the thermister installed at a point on the cond coil where it runs 100°F during normal operating conditions.
Actually the pressure control could cause the frosting if the solenoid bleeds through…
man so many wires on that thing. I thought my thermostat was bad, haha. If someone remove that and you just come upon a bunch of wires do you think you could wire it all back up again and get it working?

Currently been in the field 7 months, my question is how did you pick up on all of the things you know as far as knowing what to look for and troubleshooting. In israel our code says that all stranded wires should be crimped with conector pin ends .
On the contactor when you have more then 10A if you check with a thermal camara you can see the diffrance in heat from crimped wire connection and non crimped one .

Got my EPA and cert with Associates in June, so I'll be taking the slings and arrows around Ohio hopefully soon (could be working now but dad recently passed, working on settling his things before I start work). You're a big reason why I'm making the switch from an IT area into commercial HVAC. You prove guys out there wrenching are super smart and definitely no fools; we have to be. I'm finding this career is much more challenging and complicated than any non-aware person could comprehend and I love it! I don't think I'll get board for a long, long time with all the aspects HVAC has! Anybody think this is a career for mindless HS dropouts is nuts! You have to have some savvy to do this work!! I appreciate you trying to improve your production quality with music. For me, just here to learn its quite unnecessary as this isn't entertainment for me but as I see it; a tutorial of sorts. You not only have a great mastery of this industry, but are very intelligent obviously yourself, so it's awesome watching someone so intelligent, knowledgeable, methodical and insightful about the work he does. I did have a question about the placement of the # control as a newbie. I always thought the control came off the king valve? And had to be higher than the connection for oil drainage/contamination? Just wondering about this, I'm sure not every situation lends itself to ideal application: Improvise, adapt, overcome, and it was utilized there previously of course. According to my brief observations of your work, there was an impression that the defrost relay is pretty much not reliable. Am i wrong change often?
