This was a service call on a walk in cooler that was running to warm, I found that a previous company had installed a new evaporator fan blade that was running in the wrong direction. I ended up replacing all the fan blades and installing a new Ke2 temp + defrost controller.

This video is brought to you by spore'ln quality, integrity and tradition. So it's a Friday night service call on an ice stuff, walk-in, cooler and they're having problems with the walk-in freezer, and I looked in there and there's an ice ice formation on that also. So we got a fun night ahead of us. It's about 9 o'clock at night right now, so we're gon na start.
Getting this defrosted. I shut off the condensing unit, there's a walk-in cooler, so the fans are gon na kind of air defrost a little bit. While I get all my tools ready got to get hoses and all that good stuff, this is a very old space maze or space miser. Coil it's gon na make a mess.
I already inform the customer there's not any way around. It doesn't help that someone put the wrong fan motor in they got the blade on long blowing straight down and the others are blowing sucking up and blowing out. So they had another service company here recently I heard I bet you. They did not we'll get a deep, frosted and figure out exactly what's going on yeah, so I got some more confirmation that the other service company came out last weekend for an emergency service call and they had called me and then, when I called him back, they Said I took too long to call him back, which was BS but anyways.
They said they called someone else, so they put a new fan blade on this middle motor and they put the wrong fan blade on. They put a clockwise rotation blade and this is a reverse air rotation. It's stupid. They left the same motor whatever, but so we're gon na defrost it.
I don't know if that's the only problem, but it's kind of frustrating. Now, I'm not here on a Friday night because they couldn't fix it right. I never thought about using my coil one, but it actually works. Really.
Nice doesn't even get the motors ready there. I left the motors in and I'm able to just put it on like a nice, shallow, shower stream and just rinse everything off. This is awesome and the customers totally okay with you getting water all over the floor, but or I'd be going super slow. But now they're they're cool with it, because it's just a standard tile floor and it's not a walk-in freezers raised floor or anything.
That's okay and they're gon na get a cook in here to clean it all up. When I'm all done so, oh yeah, this one actually works. Really nice for doing the inside of this club makes it super easy and you can control the shower, so you can actually do it from the outside. If you wanted to without even making a mess, nice and slow, so that's kind of cool, so found another use for my wand, all right, so I came up onto the roof.
This is my walking cooler on the right and then my walk-in freezers on the left. What I did cuz, I'm still working on the walking cooler, was I shut off. The disconnect opened up the defrost bar pulled out the X terminal wire temporarily put the unit into a 100 defrost and then we're going to let it just sit there and defrost for a while and then there's a problem I'll look into that right now, but we're Gon na let it just sit there and defrost for a while, and I just have about a little pressure control. Yep! That's all this! So I'm not gon na spend a crap ton of time here tonight. We're gon na come back. We're gon na change. That fan blade when we come back, I'm just going to get that walk-in coil defrosted and get the walk-in freezer defrost it and then we'll come back on Monday with the parts we'll change that pressure control, because it's sticking we might look and see if we can Adjust it, but more than likely we're gon na have to change it and then we'll replace the fan blade on the walk-in cooler too. So we're gon na get back down to the walking pool and so all right, I'm on the walk-in freezer.
Now and again, I'm just doing a quick defrost get these things going for the night and then we'll come back because I'm gon na spend all night here kind of frustrated right now, so you can get this defrosted real, quick, okay, it's back up and running and, Like I said, I'm gon na watch them down and temp a little bit and then they're still looking a little bit of ice on that line. Sorry, so we get over the clothes defroster and walked come back for now. Follow-Up, I'm gon na obviously make sure it comes down at temperature right now. It's at about 10 degrees in the box right now so I'll.
So you come down to at least zero and then bounce and then we'll come back and follow up. No wonder why it's iced up pop it open. Okay, we are back today we just put well we just defrosted this coil again cuz. It was a little frosted up when we turned obviously because the middle motor was blown in the wrong direction, because I had the wrong fan blade, but I went ahead and picked up three new blades replaced them all.
We defrosted it real, quick and then I'm gon na go and replace the thermostat too, and put a key to therm, temp Plus defrost controller on here at least. That's the plan to try to help with some defrost because they they need to buy some time on this guy. They are replacing this entire walk-in entire thing, so we just need to buy some time on this coil. So I'm gon na put that and then that way we have some better defrosting going on.
So I installed a key to theorem 10 plus defrost controller here, set it up. We went a little crazy with the defrost, so I set them up for eight defrost a day, because again they have a lot of problems here, I'm actually going to come back with a longer sensor, because that one's a little short - and I honestly like to run It over to the fan guards, but for now it's tucked back where it's not gon na get hit by air. I made sure because, even though the air is sucking up through and blowing out and hitting that wall, it's not making it over here but, like I said, I am going to come back with a longer sensor because in a perfect world, I'd like to run that Sensor all the way along that drain line and then over and mount it to like the middle fan, got or even the farthest Vanguard, because that's the return air inlet through the fan guard so but yeah so we're gon na watch. This guy come down a temp and I'll jump up on the roof and look at the refrigerant pressures here in just a minute. So this is a pretty beat-up condensing unit. It's an old master built unit, our 22 pressures. Don't look horrible. We've got a clear sight.
Glass right down there everything's looking good. So what I did is this particular unit has a normal defrost clock so in the middle of the night or I took all the defrost out of it and then in the middle of the night. I just did a longer defrost, like 45 minutes in the middle of the night 3:00 to 4:00 in the morning, or something like that. So we're using the key to therm downstairs to do normal, routine defrost and then in the middle of the night.
We're going and that's it so pressures are looking good. I don't see any reason to check receiver level or anything nothing's jumping out at me, so we're gon na go ahead and wrap this up. So I decided to go ahead and take care of this sensor wire. Today, so it's not the prettiest thing in the world, but it's in the return Airstream its run over and but I'm gon na show you why we're doing this, because this old temperature controller was mounted right here.
The old sensible look at this. This is why they're changing this box, that's the everything's separating on this box. Look at the walls all around all the walls. They've got all kinds of separation.
Look over there! It's like that. I believe that the slab is settling and everything's falling, so they're having all kinds of warm air intrusion and it's causing the temp control, Plus this door doesn't shut over here too, so so anyways. This is the old one, but you see this door. The stores staying open too, so this is the short sensor we had it running.
While we ran to the supply house, and then we just ran the new one and we're running it over and then we're gon na run it into the control right now and to give you an example, this is reading 38 degrees when my digital thermometer over here As reading 33 so 39 degrees over here, so there's quite a bit of difference, but it's because of all the warm air coming in. So I want to be sensing the return air coming into the coil, even if there's warm air and shooting in the box. I don't want that warm air coming in the door and coming over here to this control. I want to be sensing the true air at the coil all right.
Third. 35.8. 36.1 good enough for my house. So now we're reading accurate.
It doesn't look horrible, it's strapped to the line. We left a little service loop on the inside right here in case you need to service the control. You can still take the cover off, but just in case you need to move something, and you see it's just run right in there and that's return air. So I like this much better, I'm happy. We need to put that cover plate on and then we are good to be done. Sometimes these overtime service calls can be extremely frustrating, and I have to remember to take my own advice. I made a video akaash almost a year ago, where I talked about you know just not letting this stuff get to you. I was frustrated with this call because I had gotten a service call the previous weekend and when I called the restaurant back, they said.
Well, you took too long to call - and this is one of my normal customers, so it really irritated me because they have my personal number on top of my normal business phone number and they know it so anyways. It was just kind of BS. You know granted there was a like a temporary manager there that night, but that just pissed me off that he called someone else like people working in my restaurants like that. Just frustrates me: okay, that's I mean they.
Don't they don't have to use me? They can use anybody, they want, but it's just frustrating because we didn't do anything wrong. It was just some manager, didn't you know, whatever some silly thing, but so then, to get a call on the same exact almost like the same exact service called the following weekend on a Friday night is just like for real. You know like I almost wanted to tell him when they called me. I was like what happened to the other case.
I wanted to tell them what happened to the other company that fixed it last weekend. You know, but I bit my tongue. I was polite to the customer, it was a different manager, you know, anyways, I got the story that they had called someone because was making a god-awful noise and supposedly they had a broken fan blade and the dude that came out put the wrong fan, blade on And it had been a week didn't even bother to come back to put the right one back on or whatever you know. So you know I had to kind of let it let it go and just chill out - and you know just go ahead - an get it fixed.
So I defrosted it like you guys saw, came back out. The next day ended up changing the thermostat to and then showed you guys that whole slab, the foundations like settling or something so they're having you know, all kinds of issues and all the ceiling you know, whatever you saw it. Okay, the walls are starting to separate from the ceiling and stuff so added the long sensor for the temperature controller and other than that. Everything else is good.
In all honesty, I haven't even dug into the walk-in freezer, yet it's been about 2 or 3 weeks. So I better get over there. They're, probably gon na call me because it's probably to be iced up again but yeah. I got to go dive into the walk-in freezer and figure out.
What's going on with out I'm thinking on the walk-in freezer, it's got a bad expansion valve because you saw the way that it was only half the coil was frozen up to me. That's indicating an expansion valve problem, but we'll figure that one out and I'll try to get video of that one. But you know you just got to remember that you know I try to remind myself not to let these calls get to me. You know, because if they're not gon na call me they're gon na call someone else, so I might as well do the work and get paid for it. So it's just one of those things all right really appreciate you guys taking the time to watch these videos, like I always say, leave me some feedback down in the comments. I really appreciate it, whether it be negative or positive feedback. Tell me: should I have done something too different. You know I'm always willing to looking to improve.
You know how I work and my skills and my knowledge so leave me some feedback and other than that we will catch you guys on the next one. Okay.
Curious if you still use K2 or have you found a more affordable or efficient controller?
I understand your frustration, the tech I apprentice for is a one man company and we often run into similar issues.
In the last few months we've even started being more selective with our calls. Sometimes you have to fire yourself to earn your customers loyalty.
Let them call someone else, that way they learn why they shouldn't.
There are alot of companies and technicians (hacks) that do not put care and integrity into their work and sometimes your customers have to learn that lesson the hard way….
They always come crawling back, trust me!
Bust out the aluminum caulk. 🤣
Ah yes the wonderful sound of mexican music in a busy kitchen.
My senior tech usually has me use a torch to get rid of ice, Is this a bad practice?
Brother I gotta bite my tongue so much I can't pronounce words anymore. Lol I get the frustration because I'm on 24/7 call for warehouse maintenance. I always tell myself it could be worse.
Good enough for this Nabourhood
obviously they change so often the personal they dont mention that they have a Tech guy who is maintaining the units and when the new personal comes and f up everything they call then the right people or the right phone nomber but still for me is frustrating
Has icing up problems
also has door that doesn't shut.
WTF are people thinking?
Ah wait. Nothing. Air humidity and cooling are magic and this guy here might wear a suit and a top hat working… Service area Barrhaven??
Its 5 PM on a Friday, who you gonna call? HVACR!
Did you disconnect and block the center fan hole with cardboard to keep it from pulling against the other motors until you could get the right motor and fan blade? I was just wondering
I work in a grocery store and have had many repair men that were completely unprofessional. Wish you were my guy. Looks like you know your stuff. Keep up the good work 👍 Are you in Orleans ?
Sometimes you have to bite your tongue. I know exactly what you mean. Thanks a lot for this very interesting videos. I watched 2 or 3 every nite. Thank you.
I could hear the frustration and tiredness in your voice in the first part of the video. It must be a good feeling though, that they called you back anyways to fix "that other company's" mistake the correct way.
Still can't comprehend how "that other guy" put the wrong fan blade on, essentially putting it on backwards without checking his/her work after. It seems like one of those stupid simple things. We all make mistakes, but c'mon… backwards fan blade? How do you not notice that? 😂😂😂 Service area Ottawa??
did you guys end up chaning everything? Service area Nepean??
Looks like not calling you the first time cost the restaurant double in labor & the other company did not even solve the issue but at least it was a golden opportunity to make yourself & your company look like a Rockstar. I'm sure management will not be making that mistake again.
They paid for their lack of patience.
Where'd you buy your coil wand?
That is so right use I got another company bs
Hello Chris.
I was on a compressor changeout yesterday and everything on the job fought me the whole way. By the end of the job I was thinking that I’m done with refrigeration and I’m going to sell my tools and find a different career. Frustrated, just like you. Today I’m back at work happier than a pig in mud. I think if you’re not frustrated occasionally with this trade then you’re doing it wrong. Good video, thanks.
Thanks for showing your skills and how it really does come down to being patience lol………… Seen about 6 videos Service area Kanata??
This box look like it's leaning!!
I totally understand you getting aggravated with customers I am in auto repair some customers can make your day and others can totally ruin it I have a small shop so space is a problem one of my latest problem customers didn’t show for 4 appointments the first time I didn’t schedule any other work so I twiddled my thumbs all day the rest I made sure I had backup work now I am an ass because I will not drop everything else and fix his car RIGHT NOW. Thank you for all the videos
I want that wand!!
Where did you buy the shower head you used to defrost the evaporator
I work on electric. Looking at those units its amazing they run at all. As far as the weathered components.just stumbled onto your channel. Very informative. Good job. Nice coverage.
my freezer is beeping sometimes maybe you know why defrost cycle I think the ice on the holding tray s melts a bit
I know the feeling. Almost like it is your own equipment and they get some stranger to work on it.
I currently have a customer that uses myself and some el cheapo guy. Workmanship really shows. I get paid alot to follow el cheapo guy.
Keep up the good work.
And i learn all of this in school😳
That music in the background tho
Well hey hopefully now they have thegood sense to make sure they get you next time. Hopefully not on a Friday night tho
Can of expanding foam to fill the gaps and adjust the door to help get the best from it before it’s replaced, as surely the system is working harder then it needs to keep the box cooler with all those air leaks. As for other service company it’s all about money, cheapest price and who’s comes first. I priced a job £450 more then the company that got the job, I give my self room to haggle on price as all customer ask for the “best price”
Why they don't simply rebuild the box. They need to level and make slab flat anyway. They can take some years out of it probably. Sure r22 not the best, but better than replacing with new one probably.
Hi am Edward am a technician working in United Arab Emirates how can I take a step to that side, I really like your videos and l have learnt a lot from you
I really love watching your videos sir. It feels like im also on the scenario your dealing with..ive learned a lot from watching your videos sir.keep posting
Stupid question but I was wondering like for walk in coolers do you put a defrost clock in the coolers, cause I know walk in freezers needs defrost clock, but what about coolers do they need defrost clocks or the coolers once it reaches temp it shuts down for 10 or 20 minutes sorry for the dumb question.
Thanks Chris all the time for your vid! You sir, teaching me a lot! God bless!
Man you really like that wand lol i think you are starting to convince me i need one
By you fixing all the problems, let that manager eat shit on explaining to corporate why they have to pay the other company as well. Nice job.
It seems super wet in that cooler. How does a door working like that even seal right in the summer time?
An exercise for Zen. Well played. Are you in Barrhaven ?
The wand, worked great, hate using map gas torch, trying to defrost, so slow Are you in Ottawa ?
I know your frustration, enough said
Good one Chris 👍. Hey so , the more videos I watch , the more it seems to me that you guys over in the States don't seem to use too many insulated tools , we're pretty big on them over here in Europe , every tech I meet always uses insulated screwdrivers , I personally can't go without, I use insulated needle nose pliers etc .
Any reason behind it ?
Cheers , mate , don't let temporary managers spoil your day 😄
Not in the HVAC trade, but still have to deal with customers and emergencies caused by hacks. Bad enough when they call another company, then you to fix their mistakes – worse when you follow one of your own guys and find out he half-assed the job and bailed. At least in the first case you're the hero. Second one you're trying to explain why it wasn't fixed right the first time without throwing your co-worker under the bus.
Do you ever deal with Remco stuff. I used to work for a grocery store in PA and our freezer always would freeze up. Remco would come out do stuff and it would happen again in a few months.
that box needs attacked with a caulking gun of gutter seam sealant. that would fix it right up, but boy would that place stink, probably have to shut the box/kitchen down for a few days with it being ventilated.
now I seen you said it was outside, seal it up from the outside, the stuff is tough and can be used under water even, it's about like sticky stringy snot lol Are you in Nepean ?
Restaurants are not the best customers and not so loyal to their service companies ,Remember it's only what Phone # they call ? And they want perfect service !
lol at backwards blade, what kind of hack didn't even check it ?
