This was a Saturday night Coldzone walk in cooler service call. I found that there were multiple refrigerant leaks and the unit had a bad time clock I got the unit up and running and we submitted a quote to repair the unit.

Get another Saturday night service call. We got a walk-in cooler, that's temping in the 50s right now. So first thing I did was came in here verified it is in the 50s and it is made sure the evaporator coils not iced up. It is not, and then, when I stepped on over here, I could hear the solenoid valve energized and buzzing, so that means the temperature controllers calling.

So at this point I'm gon na go ahead and jump onto the riff and see what I can find. Okay, I just came up onto the roof, put up a couple lights and we're gon na get the panels, pulled off the rack and check and see. What's going on, we have a very simple control panel here. It's always important that you label everything.

Now everybody understands we're dealing with this system app walking cooler down here in the middle on the bottom, and also look at the legend right here. System F, walking cooler, so we come on over here I haven't done anything. This is just a visual inspection. We got two time clocks, this one's labeled G, this one's labeled, F looks, like F, is in defrost right now and it says 12:00 noon.

She also says 12:00, so that's interesting. It's almost like they both have the same time on them. Anyways, regardless we'll keep checking it out system F right here, The Breakers not tripped, so I clicked the defrost time clock out of defrost and the compressor came on. I have not put my service gates on it, yet my sight, glass is flashing, we're definitely low uncharged.

I'm adding gas right now to clear the sight glass just adding a little bit at a time, monitoring, cyclists, the whole time to make sure I see when it actually clears and because it's Saturday night see my tablet it's 9:30 at night I'll, do a quick leak Check but we're not going to spend hours here looking for leaks today, I just do a quick one to make sure it's not giant come back on a normal day. All right, so I cleared up the sight. Glass box is coming down in temperature, get nice and shiny now in there, so we're gon na go down and check the temp of the box, like I said, just, do a quick leak check to make sure enough that jumps out at me, but we're not gon Na be here all night doing this, these units that have these vinyl or rubber pressure control hoses guaranteed. They always leak.

Thinking like I said, but I'm not gon na stop there cuz, I guarantee there's other leaks too. Those things are always leaking, so we'll definitely write that up and then well we're still gon na come back and do a thorough leak check. I'm gon na just tighten up on that guy, just a little bit to see if it'll tighten it all right back in here and I'm picking a bleak right down here. So you can actually see the bubbles that's coming from, where the copper line runs through the tube sheet or flat plate or whatever.

So the leak is on the other side like in the thin pack, and it's just linking through. So we've got a leak on the roof at the pressure control hose we've got a leak at the evaporator coil. This cause I'm pretty bad shape. So I honestly don't know if they're gon na want to do too much to it.
Okay, so another thing as I'm leaving, I noticed I came to this defrost clock and I marked it and then I set my stopwatch and it's been 30 minutes and that defrost clock hasn't moved so defrost clock is bad. Also. What I'm actually going to do is go ahead and temporarily just pull the defrost pins out, like I said I'll, be back here, probably Monday, so we'll change the clock, then I'm not going to get into it tonight, though at least they'll be fine. So we had a service call on a walk-in cooler that wasn't working.

When I arrived, I found that the unit was actually in a defrost, so I clicked it out of a defrost and found that the system was low on refrigerant. We went ahead and topped off the refrigerant charge, found multiple leaks, one for sure down at the evaporator coil and then one for sure at one of the pressure control hoses up on the roof. The other thing I noticed, though, was that while I was downstairs doing a leak check, I marked the defrost clock and when I came back upstairs, I should say I marked the defrost clock and started the stopwatch on my phone when the stopwatch got to a half An hour I went ahead and came back upstairs and the defrost clock hadn't moved at all, so I did confirm that the defrost clock had 208 volts, which is what it needed. So that confirmed that we also had about defrost clock for the night temporarily, because it's a walk-in cooler.

I went ahead and took all the defrost pins out of the defrost clock because I am going to be coming back probably Monday morning to do a more thorough leak check. I just did a quick one today and then I'll change the defrost clock. Then I don't know where we're gon na have to go with the evaporator coil. Yet when I come back I'll, do a more thoroughly check and find out if it's repairable or if we're just gon na have to replace it.

I have a feeling that it's gon na end up being replaced because it's a 2003 eave a protocol and it's pretty rotted out from the looks of it, but once I get it pulled apart I'll know more and then definitely we're gon na have to change the Pressure control hoses up on the roof, so you know this is: was a Saturday night emergency call again. You know I made I've made a couple videos about this kind of stuff, but it happens. Okay, dealing with restaurants, especially you get the emergency service calls. The call came in right when I was making dinner, but it is what it is.

You know I finished making dinner. I ate real, quick and then got out of there and got the call figured out. I'm just finishing up at the service calls about 10:30 at night, so it's not too bad. So you know that's just life in Restaurant refrigeration.

You know every once in a while. You get an emergency service call, so don't get upset about it and whatever you do. Don't ask the manager when they noticed it stopped working? Okay, because that will always irritate you, because they will always say that it stopped working at nine o'clock in the morning and they decided to call you at 7:00 at night. So I stopped asking those questions and I just kind of hey, you know shake their hand.
All right show me where it is I'll, get it fixed. You know just go with the flow because life's too short to get angry and you're gon na end up killing yourself. You know stressing about things so all right. That's it have a nice night.

The flexible hose leak problem is a really common MVAC issue most often misdiagnosed or just missed…

Hey, new subscriber here, loving the videos. Quick question…. I am in the UK and if we find a leak we have to by law reclaim refrigerant, cure the leak and can only add refrigerant once the leak has been cured. Yet in the USA it's seems to be ok to leave a system leaking a refrigerant until it's repaired? Is that correct? Hard to believe considering how harmful to the environment it is. Not hating btw, just curious. Thanks

Good job man I’m a new to hvac , i want to asking you a question, when was the walk in freezer or cooler will go to self pump down, is when the thermostat satisfies, it will close liquids line solenoid, and than will go to self pump down, leaving the avaporator no pressure, untill thermostat calling again, the refrigeration cycle begins, am i right? Thank you

I enjoy watching your videos. I’m 72 and 45 years ago I worked HVAC in the Los Angeles area. This was back at the time Fazio's sold out to Albertsons. The Hussmann manifold worked the whole store on R22 with two 250 ton carries compressors. Plus a third one for a/c. I would have loved to have worked with you because of your logic.

Great video! I don't know how you keep so positive, I'm usually not that perky on a call at night. Good advice about not asking when it went down. That definitely puts you over the top when it went down 6hrs earlier.

Timer motor did not advance yet so are you removing the pins from the defrost clock in case the timer motor does for whatever random reason start working again and then potentially get stuck in the next defrost?

How do you like that style of evaporator coil? Ceiling mount horizontal versus vertical mount hanging near a back wall preference for new install or renovation?

Have never seen one before, but can think of a few advantages, wondering what the disadvantages are or reason that they are not so common?

Thanks as always for taking us along for the ride. Are you in Orleans ?
