So we had a Trane Voyager unit that was not working properly, the unit had a refrigerant leak (cracked discharge line) and a failed condenser fan motor capacitor.

Today we have a service call on a package unit ran by an energy management system or EMS. The restaurant was complaining of a warm dining room. The EMS has been called and they had shut off the unit before we arrived, so we just called them. Have them turn the unit back on and now we're gon na check out the unit.

So you know first things. First, visual inspection of the condenser. You know it doesn't look that, but we'll have to check to see if the inner coil, because this one's a double rode coil. So you have to split it to clean it.

So we'll check to see if that's dirty first thing, I'm going to do, is, go and put on some service gauges and check it out. This looks like a 15 ton unit, yeah 180,000 BTUs, it's a 15 ton. Another thing I had already opened this up. You guys can see a bunch of oil spray, this pressure control all over the head of the compressor, so I'll have to look into that to see, if maybe we have a leak or, if that's just spray from someone taking their gauges off so far, nothing's jumping Out at me, but well I shouldn't say that there is something jumping out of me.

I just tested y12 comment and it has 24 volts. I tested why to to comment and it doesn't have anything. My second stage compressors running my first stage. Compressor isn't so I got to check and see if this has a lead lag setup in it where it swaps the compressor.

Sometimes I have seen that, but if it doesn't, then that's a little strange to me sit there. We are it's a crack discharged line. Now. My experience with crack discharge lines is that you usually caused by a bad compressor, bad vibration and the compressor or something is usually what it is that guys bubble in her own bed.

So again, I can even put my gauges on this. I just saw oil on the lines and said: hey what the heck. Let me look into that real quick. So I've spent 15 minutes dude.

You know. I'm not gon na spend a bunch of time just 15 minutes down the discharge lines, cracked so, but I'm gon na keep diagnosed in this unit. I'm not going to stop there. I'm gon na go and put my gauges on both stages.

Try to figure out why that second stage was running in the first stage. Wasn't so I had pressures climbing through the roof spinning backwards. After I put my gauges on there, I could definitely see that there was something going on with the first stage compressor. The head pressure was skyrocketing.

I found that the second stage condenser fan motor had a bad run. Cap went ahead and replaced that and then the system pressure stabilized out definitely can tell that the second stage is low on gas, but this will get them going for now. Okay, so we ended up having a bad run, capacitor for the condenser fan motor and we, as you see in my display or my pressure readings that I show up on the screen. Refrigerant pressures are kind of low in both systems, but definitely low in the second stage right now, because this is r22 we're going to talk to the customer, giving some quotes and see what they want to do - repair versus fix, not a minimum.
I'm going to change that condenser fan motor, even though it was just the capacitor. This is so far away from us and I just like to be extra cautious, so we're gon na change, the condenser fan motor blade, capacitor and then at a minimum. We're gon na fix the leak in the discharge line in the second stage and then recharge the unit, but I'm going to recommend that we replace the compressor because of the vibration that it kind of has and then, when we do, that. We'll split this coil and clean it.

That's pretty much it.

We had nine 10 ton units on our factory roof, seventeen 2.5 million BTU makeup air units, thirty six Lennox 100,000 BTU units Twenty plus window units and countless condensers throughout the complex, With only a crew of three Technicians. I set up a PM program (back in 2001) using the factory production computer, (they didn’t know there was a maintenance application in the system). Needless to say, there were busy. With that system in place, call outs were reduced from 40% to less than 5% and we were eventually able to hire an extra tech full time, thanks to the PM system that showed we were saving a ton of money.

What does the 15 tons mean? Is it how much it weighs?

If you were to sell a whole roof top unit how would you get it up on the roof?

I'm surprised Trane didn't give this unit model number NCC-74656.
Though, unlike York, Trane was never assimilated by the Borg-Warner. When that happens, don't even bother with an ohmmeter — measuring for resistance is futile!

How many pounds would a 15 ton take? Switching to commercial and always wondered how much freon one would have to carry on the truck. As well as recovery cylinders.

What app is it that you use for your gauges? And what set of gauges do you use? Great video

The other fan spinning the other way that's hilariously stupid😂 some goof put The Blade on backwards😆 Are you in Kanata ?

Were you able to find out if the unit had lead and lag?

on the trane RTUs, they often have a cracked discharge line after a while. I always add a vibration loop to the discharge line to mitigate the problems with that.

  20. Avataaar/Circle Created with python_avatars Familia Sanchez HVAC says:

What did you figure out about the compressor? Why was second stage running when it was calling for first stage to run? Did it have a lead/lag like you mentioned in the video? Thanks!

  21. Avataaar/Circle Created with python_avatars 石磊 says:

Man I didn't get it it was just a bad capacitor and you just make your decision to change the motor? It is just like you see some one that he has high blood sugar and you just say let's cut his leg off because he will going to cut his leg in future anyway? That sounds crazy to me !I guess they going to pay about 4or 5hundred dollars for only that motor right? And there still low refrigerant problem not include!when you say R22 I have a feeling they going to pay about 1000 or more just for motor and some gas

I follow a lot of HVAC channels, and I gotta say, most of them just turn into advertisers for their sponsors, and the content tails off. But you put a lot of high quality content out, and I've seen no signs that falling off. Every vid has at least one little nugget I can learn from and take with me. Thank you for the vids, keep it up!!!! Service area Orleans??

That’s a really common spot to find cracks, the discharge line gets weakened in that bend due to vibration from the compressor. They make a weight kit you can attach to the line and it dampens the vibration. Just had this same exact thing happen on a 6 ton Trane RTU a couple months ago. One of my instructors in college worked for Trane and he’s the one who told me about the weights.

The D tek select is pretty dead on with finding leaks on different refrigerants exept R-410a. Have you ran into this as well?
