Chlorine is chlorine right well, there's more than one type of chlorine in your pool water and, if you're not keeping track of each one, your pool may not be as clean as you think. The key to keeping your pool sanitized is understanding the difference between free and total chlorine check it out. So what are the different chlorine measurements in your pool? There's free chlorine combined chlorine and total chlorine. So, let's start with free chlorine.
When you add chlorine to your pool it dissolves and forms hypochlorous acid, this weak acid disassociates in the water combines with oxygen and forms hypochlorite and oxidizing ion it's the same active ingredient in household bleach and together these chemicals form free chlorine. Why is it called free chlorine? This is the chlorine, that's free or available to sanitize your pool water, and this is what you test for before: making adjustments to your pool water, chemistry and when you add chlorine, you're increasing the amount of free chlorine in the water. So you want to aim between one and three parts: per million with three parts per million being ideal. Next is combine chlorine once the free chlorine begins to react with contaminants in the water.
It becomes combined chlorine that free chlorine, oxidizes contaminants such as nitrogen and ammonia. The available chlorine is used up, combines with the contaminants it's working against and boom combined chlorine. Some chlorine remains in the water, but it can't sanitize as well as free chlorine, and this is also how chloramines are formed. Chloramines are what give your pool that chlorine smell and too many chloramines can irritate your skin and eyes and finally, there's total chlorine.
Total chlorine is the sum of combined chlorine and free chlorine in your pool water. If total and frequent levels are the same, there's no combined chlorine in your water, meaning none of it has been used up. Yet if the total chlorine is higher than the free chlorine level, the difference of the two is the combined chlorine level bottom line. In order for your pool to be properly sanitized, the free chlorine level must remain higher than the combined chlorine level, and you need that free or available chlorine to sanitize your pool so test your pool water regularly with test strips or a liquid test kit.

My pool’s free chlorine (5) is always greater than the combined chlorine (2). Is that an issue? Do I need to add anything?
My 900 gallon above ground pool reading ok total chlorine but free chlorine is white. Does this mean I need to add more chlorine to much chlorinemines ?
So, what do I add to increase free chlorine? Shock? Thank you
Thankyou.
PERFECTLY explained.
why are people DISLIKING this video ?
Thank you so much, I was writing a paper on water treatment process and couldn't understand what free chlorine meant. You guys saved my life! Are you in Nepean ?
I use Orthotolidine to test for the chlorine level, is that test the total chlorine or FC?
Hi Matt when my C.C. is less than 1.0 should I shock it out only if above 1.0ppm ?? Or over 0.05ppm CC ??
My pool is the color of the green background you are using what does that mean?
My total chlorine is in the normal range but my free chlorine is low. What do I do? Service area Barrhaven??
So if I keep my free chlorine level at 3ppm, does this mean there is more free chlorine then combined chlorine?
So i just tested my pool water today and my FC levels look high, around 5ppm. I know the optimal number is 3ppm, so how do I reduce the FC in my pool?
Thank you. I have a Polygroup Summer Waves pool with a chronic zero free chlorine issue. Problem solved by putting the hockey puck in the filter/strainer assembly. Genius. All levels are normal now
You lost me at buy it!! Are you in Orleans ?
Question : So I shocked my pool a few week's ago, and it appears that my FC level is still very low. Is the way to get that to come up is to add daily chlorine tab's?
My salt water pool levels are all good, according to the test strips, except chlorine. I just shocked my pool yesterday and the test is still reading zero. I checked the filter and the salt cell. Does anyone have any ideas of what’s going on?
Do you recommend a salt water system to save cost in the long run?
What when is my free chlorine level is higher than total chlorine? Free chlorine is around 4ppm and total chlorine is only 0.48ppm. I use Hayward salt chlorinator, vinyl pool, indoor, salt level 3.8, PH 7.3, CYA 4. Tested with PoolLab Test 1.0
We are currently setting up our above ground pool….I'm wondering after initally shocking the pool, when can I add the chlorine tabs in the floater to the pool?
Thanks!
What are your thoughts on the free chlorine levels based on stabilizer levels? 1-3 ppm still good with 40 ppm CYA?
I have a question about the beginning of pool treatment. We recently installed a 32’x16’x52” Intex (~ 15,000 gallons) and currently filling it. The filter and pump is a sand model and we would use chlorine for sanitizing. Now, Me just finding out from my wife that my son’s skin is very sensitive to chlorine, my wife and I decided to purchase a saltwater system. However the saltwater system will not be here for between 7-14 days. My question is about the water in the pool now. How can I keep it sanitized until I get my new filter and pump? Are there certain things I can put in it and not run a pump for a short time? Can I run the filter and pump and keep chlorine levels at maybe 1ppm (very low) and be ok? Will running the pool like this make it harder to switch to a saltwater system or is it ok? The pool has a lot of water in it now and I don’t want to waste and and start over. Lots of questions and I’m trying to figure it out so the family can have fun.
Do you need to test for total chlorine in the pool or just free chlorine? because otherwise how can you determine if free is higher than CC, yet you only mention to test for FC… care to explain=? Service area Ottawa??
You guys are great.
thanks for your education!
