We need to talk about how to properly sanitize your pool water with either chlorine, bromine, salt, minerals, and even Baquacil (biguanide). It would be great if you could just fill your pool with water, not add any pool chemicals, and then never worry about the water becoming a gross breeding ground for nasty contaminants and organisms? Yeah, and maybe you could keep Nessie in your pool, too. But we don’t think she’s any good at pool chemistry. Let's dive in and keep the pool water sanitized correctly!

The key to pool water chemistry is balance, but we already talked about balance in another video. So if you haven't seen that go watch that one before watching this one in this video we're talking about why balance is so important because it makes your sanitizers more effective. Sanitizers, like chlorine, bromine, minerals, salt bug, y9 or Bock whistle. All of those things are what sanitize your pool water and truthfully.
If we tried to do the balancing video on the water, chemistry, video and one thing, it would be as long as a movie and we have to submit it to the Sundance Film Festival and then we've to fly everybody out to Utah land. That's just not something! I'm willing to pay for so in this video we're talking about the second part of water, chemistry or pool water chemistry and that's sanitizer, so, let's get into it. Okay, disclaimer! I want to be very clear about this. Everyone has a different way of taking care of a pool at the end of the day.
We all just want to help you take care of your pool. We all want your pool to be clean and clear, and the information in this video is from my years of experience in the pool industry plus the research we've done here at swim University and if I missed anything, please just leave a comment below and we'll clarify It there and perhaps do a future video, but for now let's get into it. First, let's talk about chlorine because it's the most popular and the most effective sanitizer for your swimming pool. Chlorine works by oxidizing contaminants and what happens is when it oxidizes.
It goes into the molecules and breaks them apart from the inside out. Chlorine is the best it just. It is just the most effective, it kills bacteria, it kills viruses, it kills algae it'll, even prevent algae from growing in your pool. But like everything there is a downside and the downsides are chloramines.
Chloramines are just ie returns. They can get into your lungs, they can be irritants and they're, just a byproduct of when chlorine kills bacteria or other contaminants, but even with that, you can get rid of chlorine means by oxidizing them with shock, and so it's still chlorine is still the ideal sanitizer. Your swimming pool, and so, if you're using chlorine, you want to keep it between one and three parts per million at all times. Ideally, you want to keep your pool water at three parts per million of chlorine at all times, and you can do this by adding chlorine pucks or chlorine stabilizer and chlorine tablets or chlorine granulars.
Next, I want to talk about saltwater pools because people often get confused that they think salt is what's actually the sanitizer and that's not true. Salt is actually the precursor to chlorine. So what happens? Is salt passes through a chlorine generator and gets turned into chlorine? So if you have a saltwater pool, you have a chlorine pool and you should keep your chlorine like. I said before at three parts per million at all times.
The good thing about having a saltwater pool is that you don't have to like manually, add pucks or manually. Add chlorine to your pool. All you have to do is add salt to your pool and make sure that the salinity of your water is at the right parts per million and then the pool will just naturally generate the chlorine. It needs. Okay, let's move on to bromine bromine is a popular sanitizer. When you have an indoor pool or you have a hot tub, because it doesn't give off that bromine or chlorine II smell and it's a good alternative to chlorine, because guess what they're cousins halogen cousins? I don't know why I thought that was funny now. Bromine works by ionizing, contaminants and ionizing means that it breaks the molecule bonds apart, thereby destroying the contaminants. So the good news about bromine is that it doesn't break down as quickly as chlorine does and it remains active longer now, just like chlorine bromine does create a byproduct, but it's not as nasty as chloramines, and if you want to you, know, get rid of the Byproducts, all you got to do is shock it now with bromine.
You want to keep it between three parts per million and five parts per million at all times, the ideal being five parts per million again bromine is super popular and super useful. If you have an indoor pool or a hot tub because of they don't give off that chlorine that, like you, know that bleach smell, which is a byproduct of chlorine, that's the chloramines that you're smelling in the water and not the actual chlorine in the water. Okay, let's talk about big wine ions, but y9 sanitizer for your pool is an alternative to chlorine and bromine and if you are sensitive to chlorine, this is what you should use and the most popular brand you'll see out. There is something called BOC whistle and if you're sensitive to chlorine or bromine or any of the other harsh sanitizers, a lot of people will tend to go towards big wines or Bach whistle as an alternative to chlorine and bromine.
Now but wine ions work by binding contaminants together, so that they're big enough for your filter to just filter out and some of the benefits are unlike bromine and chlorine that produce byproducts, the quinine s do not, and it's feels pretty good on your hair and your Skin and you know with chlorine - sometimes if you have blond hair, can turn green. That's not going to be a problem and it's not susceptible to burning off by the Sun or the UV rays from the Sun. Now, of course, the downside of using the guanines is that they're more expensive they're, not as effective as chlorine, and they can sometimes cloud your water up. But just like all the other sanitizers that we talked about, you have to make sure that your pH and Acland e are correct, is not a standalone product.
It works well with a balanced pool with your balanced pH at seven point. Four to seven point: six and your alkalinity between a hundred and 150 parts per million, the recommended, but guai nine level in your pool, is between thirty and fifty parts-per-million, the ideal being around 40 parts per million. Okay: let's talk about a mineral system or an ionizer, and this is actually my favorite way to sanitize a pool because it involves chlorine but not as much and so what a mineral sanitizer does is use, minerals to sanitize the water most commonly copper and silver. It works by releasing positively charged ions to destroy negatively charged ions, pretty cool. Now it's important to note that a mineral system or an ionizer is not a complete system. You do need a backup of chlorine to make sure that it kills everything and so with a mineral system. The recommended chlorine reading should be between 0.5 parts per million or up to one part per million chlorine in your water at all times, as it back up to the mineral system. But the reason I love it so much is because it allows you just to use less chlorine.
So it's kind of a mix between if you want, if you don't like the harshness of keeping your chlorine reading at three parts per million. But you don't want to switch over to something like a bug: y9 system. You can use a mineral system which allows you to keep your chlorine lower and at the beginning of this video, when I was talking about chlorine, I mentioned salt water systems. Salt water systems are great, they're, so easy to use they're expensive to start with, because you have to buy the supplies to install it.
The chlorine generator. All of those things are, you know, have to be plumbed into your pool, but it is very easy to use and it does generate chlorine. You have to add salt to the water and it's just table salt just regular table salt to the water. I mean you, there's bigger bags of it because you got a lot of water.
You add table salt to the water and when the water passes through the chlorine generator or the salt generator, it gets turned into chlorine and then gets pushed back into your pool. So the recommended salt level in your pool is between twenty seven hundred parts per million and thirty four hundred parts per million, with the ideal being at around thirty two hundred parts per million or three thousand two hundred parts per million. Thank you for all your videos! I do have a question about mineral sanitizer. We have been using a solar copper ionizer for almost a year and it's been working great. The copper level in the pool keep increasing (which I'm assuming is normal). My question is, do I need to use a "metal out" at some point?
You have no clue what your talking about and we have to watch all your videos to find out one thing.
How soon after I sanitize can I shock the pool? We went on vacation and our above ground pool is back to square one lol.
Hello, how is everything?
We are a Brazilian chemical industry, and we manufacture chemical products for the treatment of swimming pool water.
Congratulations on your videos, the contents are excellent.
Our products for the treatment of swimming pool water are 100% chlorine free.
Since the oxidation of water is done by hydrogen peroxide, and sanitization is done by a biocide based on quaternary ammonium salts.
We would like to know if there is any swimming pool water disinfection methodology, similar to the one we use?
Is hydrogen peroxide used in swimming pool water treatment in the United States? Could you tell us the benefits or harms of using it in water treatment?!
Is bromine okay to use in an above ground pool “Intex”?
Can I use an ionizer in my saltwater pool? And if so how does this affect my chemical levels and maintenance?
Thank you for providing this educational video. Have you made a video on ozone systems coupled with chlorination for residual? Service area Kanata??
Could shock be used as your only source of chlorine for your pool? 2021 is proving difficult for a new pool owner.
Great video, very educational. My question is as I’ve been watching several of your videos and you seem to be in favor of using the 3 “ trichlor” tablets for sanitizing. In the past I’ve only used salt for sanitizing but it rusted out my Intex pool and this year we’re replacing our pool with another Intex pool and have decided to go with the regular chlorine route to prevent rust and damage to our pool and hopefully it will last longer this time around. I’ve been watching other videos who are in favor of liquid chlorine vs tablets due to the tablets being stabilized vs Unstabilized therefore making it difficult to control the CYA levels in a pool. Not sure if you combat this problem with use of the tablets or not or how you combat this problem, just wanted to know your thoughts on this or could you make a video pertaining to this? I’m curious to know as I’ve only dealt with a saltwater system. Also my new pool has “galvanized steel” but I’m still concerned about the threat of rust. Do you have any tips or tricks to help with that? I appreciate your help and all of your informative videos. Thanks 😉
Is a mineral pool the same as a magnesium pool? Are you in Barrhaven ?
For the salt system, do we need to add a little chlorine as back up or not? Please answer
Question : What PH level is the best to disinfectant the sea water pond ? Service area Nepean??
Can you run both bromine and chlorine for running hot water by night and sunlight by day
Does chlorine effect kids hair or hairs overall?
I need yor help how can I remove stains from pool bottom please
What about UV lights with a salt water system?
How do you raise free chlorine? I have an intex pool. I’ve added chlorine tablets and have test strips but free chlorine doesn’t seem to budge. Thanks!
If you aren't fond of using a copper based algaecide to kill algae because it may stain the pool then why would you like a mineral system that uses copper to sanitize the pool?
Thanks for this video! How long does sodium thiosulfate take to work after you add it to a pool?
Oh please, who wants to put copper and silver in your pool water? Use chlorine in appropriate amounts based on your cyanuric acid, and forget about minerals, which are the scam of the century.
Can we use copper sulfate as alternative of chlorine to swimming pool? If yes, how much?
Thanks Are you in Ottawa ?
I did the bbb method and my bromine is too high what did I do wrong?
Chlorine levels are at 10ppm for three days now, pump running 24/7… help please
🖐️
how much Magnesium sulfate would I need for a 40,000 liter pool? (aussie)
What about an option for an inline UV light for sanitization. A debated issue I keep running into with UV lights is the concern that known fact that UV sunlight is bad for chlorine. My research tells me that UV light from a UV sanitation is not the same as UV sunlight and that they actually work well with chlorine pools by not depleting chlorine but rather removing the chloramine byproduct. Similar to a mineral system it still requires a backup chlorine level at around .5 – 1 ppm so it reduces the need for a high chlorine levels and all the benefits of that come with that. Any thoughts around this? I think this would be a great topic for your next video on Pool Chemistry!
To prolong pool usage in the north we have a heater. I have been told that switching to a saltwater system would be more corrosive to the heater and cause premature failure. Can you comment on that, as we currently only use chlorine?
What about ozone system?
I can't seem to get my ph up to a suitable level. Have just added 2.75kgs of PH+ (2 doses) and still can't get a good ph reading in our 81,000 litre pool.
Thank you for your videos, my pool if finally crystal clear this year because of me following your videos!
I have been doing good for my first time as a pool owner I think. I have been keeping everything balanced so far. I choose to use chlorine granules and been working well.
I guess my question is if you keep your sanitizer at 3ppm at all times, why do a shock weekly, making the ppm go like 10 plus ppm? Are you in Orleans ?
What do you like best, strips or liquid for water testing.
Hey Matt. Awesome video. I’ve been watching ever since I opened our pool this year thanks to you. But I’ve had a few questions regarding winterizing such as how many psi air compressor I will need or if I will need to drain the pool below the returns to get all the water out. We have 3 returns, 1 skimmer and a 6 foot main drain. Would you know of any air compressors that could do the job? Any advice would be appreciated. Also would you be willing to make a hands on video specifically on blowing out pool lines for winterizing. Thank you. Keep up the informative videos.
What sanitizer do you use in your pool?
