After looking at estimating an HVAC job recently, I found it necessary to do a video on the subject of linesets. Linesets are typically specified by size and length requirements by the manufacturer and must be followed upon installation for proper operation and warranty coverage compliance. At this particular job we looked at, the customer noted there were companies willing to install a system outside of the specs given by the manufacturer. Joshua covers why that's a problem.

Question on heat pump line sets: why is the liquid line for a split system not insulated, but the line of a mini split is insulated? Is there a technical reason?

If you exceed the maximum line set length that the manufacturer specifies, the the warranty will be invalid. The compressor will likely (surely) fail beyond the specified maximum length. That said, I have encountered some manufactures have line sets up to 95 feet (mini splits), which is long. I would shop for equipment that allows for longer line sets. A call to a A/C manufacturer may help out and maybe they can guide for a solution at a minimum. But, I wouldn't install beyond specs.

The root of the problem is domestic systems are just getting too expensive and complicated. People are trying to save because they feel they have to. The industry needs a major perspective shift towards building economical systems.

What’s the consensus on linesets at installation of new outdoor equipment after replacing 40 year heat pump…..Re-use, flush, or pay extra to have refrigerant lines replaced. Are you in Orleans ?
