So we're heading to a house to do an estimate should customers get free estimates? I Know that we provide free estimates on certain installations, but I've heard different thoughts on this. There are customers out there that are just kind of kicking the tires and they're not really looking to spend money anytime soon, but they're acquiring some of those free estimates. and I think there are some companies that just simply don't provide them at times. Maybe they're really busy.
Maybe they have another reason why they just simply don't provide free estimates on things. I Know some companies. In fact, we are one of these companies that we do free estimates on some things, but some things we don't. If it's a some sort of repair or some sort of troubleshooting, we charge for our time and our trip out to at least diagnose that system.
And I've just noticed that across the industry, different companies do things different ways. So the question becomes, should companies do free estimates on at least certain things I Think a lot of homeowners would say yes, but I think that leads to another topic of conversation. And that is when you have these larger companies that have hundreds of employees or at least dozens of employees. and some of those employees are salesmen and they're sales people.
salesman, sales women. sales people go to homes to sell things. That's their one and only job and they make a commission off of what they sell. I Think that when companies are providing that free estimate, but they also if they sell something they have to pay, you know some Of these people make six figures on their commissions of selling some of this stuff.
Well, they're obviously building into their pricing in some way. They've got to pay that person's salary in some way. So when you have these people making decent living, they're making a good career off of Simply selling things. Does that mean they're a bad company? Does that mean they're that the person doing the sales is bad? No, it just simply means that that you might be paying for that service.
The last thing I'll say on that is I Heard someone say the other day that when they choose a company, one of their deciding factors is do I think this company is going to be in business a year from now or 10 years from now and sometimes they might pay a higher price if they think the answer is yes over a company that they're not so sure. So having a company that they have sales people, they provide free estimates, but maybe they're the one that you think is going to be a better long-term solution. What's a good thermostat that learns what temperature you want based on outdoor temperature, preferably a Honeywell brand?
I find myself not happy with the 72 that I set on the thermostat when the temperature outside is 90 while the same 72 that I set is great when the temp outside is 75, on a different day of course.
I'm having a heat pump and air handler changed out in my home I called 3 companies had all 3 companies give me an estimate on the same product even though they each try to sell me a different model or a different product so it makes it difficult to compare and guess what the price ranged from 19000 complete to 12300 same exact train equipment and air handler and heat pump all identical matching numbers and bids for complete installation That's why I get estimates on my work I won't pay for an estimate on a complete install
Hi there! I am into your videos since I am in the market for a complete new system. 2.5 ton Heat pump and air handler to replace the 34 years old Rheem system in a house I recently moved in. I wanted to know if you could please give me a detailed opinion of the 2 options I have . $4900 part and labor for a 14.3 seer2 AMERISTAR heat pump and air handler with thermostat. or $5800 for the Trane XR14 and matching air handler with thermostat and new pad . I wish my system could last at least 15 years without major issue. I have heard that the newer version of Ameristar units (under branch of Trane) became sort of more reliable. Thank you so much ! Brother I would like to ask you a question if you dont mind, I bought an older home with a new hvac with gas heat. The smell of, I'll call it, burnt gas is annoying in winter, it diesnt seem harmful, but you can smell it. Now heres what just happened,
I went to replace the batteries in the thermostat and I put them in backwards in the damn thing burnt up, lol I put on another digital thermostat, and everything works fine. It's still 80 degrees here in Kentucky, and I've used the air conditioner and the heater they both work fine,, the problem is
I'm getting that burnt gas smell and I'm only using the air conditioner. It smells just like it does in the dead of winter when it's 30° outside and the gas heat is running around the clock. WTH is going on!!?? It's not a filter,, and I really don't think it has anything to do with that thermostat either because it only started doing this about five days later. It doesn't smell electrical it doesn't smell like rotten eggs it smells exactly like the gas furnace running in the dead of winter, and I can't stand it. I'm going to go take the cover off of it tomorrow could it possibly be the pilot light is turned up way too high,, it doesn't smell like the blower motors overheating,, it's the same smell I get in the dead of winter except now I'm getting it running the air conditioner and it's 80° outside do you have any idea what it is?? I think a free estimate on installation of a complete new unit all in is ok ( really it’s up to the company ) for service no to many variables in what it is and how long it could take tell them your hourly rate over the phone .
As a comfort consultant for HVAC units, I feel like free estimates are a double-edged sword. On one hand like the comments are saying no one would pay for an estimate. On the other, because now the commission for selling the unit must be factored into the unit's price, the price goes up. Like you said, when someone is just looking and assembling free estimates they may not be looking to actually purchase anything. So giving free estimates to some people feels like a waste of time at some points. It's an imperfect system, but such is life.
Any company that want to charge for an estimate can go pound sand.
Id never pay for an estimate. I just recently got 3 estimates from 3 companies i trust locally. Only one of the 3 sent a "salesman". The other two were the workers and owners.
Good things aren’t cheap. Cheap things aren’t good. 👍🏼
I never pay for quotes and I’m happy about that , the company will get their money back if you hire them anyhow , it’s part of the business you chose. Service area Ottawa??
