I make a point to clean return grills inside restaurants because of this very scenario but a lot of maintenance and service techs never do. Partly because a lot of commercial techs can’t deal with people or don’t speak or spend any time with management to figure out if the have a concerns related to HVAC. You can save a lot of service calls and wasted trip by making sure returns are clean. Try to clean when customers are not nearby as to not drop dust or give people unjustified reason to complain

Why I always recommend to the homeowner every time they vacuum put the brush attachment on the end of the hose and clean all grilles

I have worked in a Mexican Fast food restaurant where the return register was so caked with grease that the return duct collapsed.

Those are the worst return grills removal and replace with a bar type grill. You will just keep having this problem.
Owners all to often neglect tenant spaces per rooftop required hvac maintenance – maintenance tenants have no access to ☠️🆘☠️🆘☠️🆘

Was tasked to change out a TXV at an auto parts shop that another tech condemned (FORESHADOWING). It was a rainy day, I just wanted to get it over with. Checked the unit to confirm the diagnosis, seemed to confirm the issue. Changed out the TXV, weighed in my charge. LOW PRESSURE READING… After racking my brain for about 30 min, ít clicked – sure enough, the return vent in the waiting room looked like yours. Not sure if there's a perfect word to convey my feelings in that moment, but "happy" was not one of them 😅.

a guy i worked with replaced a compressor because it had low suction pressure. after he replaced it still wasnt working. he called me to help. and found this same thing. cleaned them pressure went up..

If I entered a restaurant with an air return that filthy I would turn around and leave.
