This was a call on a warm beer walk in that had a very dirty condenser and a tripped head pressure control. I temporarily got the unit going and talked the customer into replacing the equipment.

This video is brought to you by spore'ln quality, integrity and tradition. Alright, today we have a viewer walk in that is not working. It's about fifty something degrees in here right now, so I'm just doing it of inspection inside the fans are running obviously, and there's no ice on the coil, so you know my hand back. There is dirty, but there's no ice.

Actually it's not that dirty. Thermostat is up here, looks like you've, got some foam or something in there, but someone's been messing with it, so we're gon na go ahead and jump up onto the roof and see what we can figure out. So this is my beer walk in. We have a walk-in freezer, walk-in cooler and a beer walk-in it's an old, cold zone and or rustle condensing unit.

I would say this units, probably from 2005 ish condenser, is dirty. Actually, I think this is from 2002 now that I think about it. But condenser looks a little dirty, a little disintegrated yeah, it's totally rotting away, so I foresee some new equipment, but we got to go through it and get it running at least see what we can do so one of the first things I'm going to do when I walk up. It's just stand the condenser fan on it.

It doesn't feel like it's locked up doing a visual inspection, defrost timer looks intact. Family didn't get a meter out, we'll go ahead and test a few voltages voltage. Readings three-phase coming in so from line 1 to 2, again. 2, o 6.

1. 2. 3. 2.

O 5, two three of six, so we have to owe a 3-phase. Let's see if we have a call for cooling coming the crosswalk with I'm gon na check from Florida in for 208 bolts, so we have a call for cooling, let's looking for a high pressure control - and there is one it's high-pressure control is down here right inside There so I'm gon na stick my hand around there and give it a flip and see if it'll reset it stuck back in here. Okay, high pressure control reset, so I had a trip tie pressure control. We're gon na have to put some service gauges on here, and then we also need to check out that condenser fan motor honestly.

It doesn't feel like that. Condenser fan motor spinning fast enough and we already tripped so the high pressure control something already shut. The unit off - I don't know if it was the high pressure control or what so we're gon na go ahead and gauge up real, quick, be careful because we don't want. You know the metal from the bolts that or anything short-out against any of the copper.

The wiring that refrigerators, nots, melted so we're looking like we've almost got equalized pressures, but we got to figure out why it tripped the high head pressure control. You go ahead and push the contactor in now. You don't ever go pushing contactors and without making sure you know what you're doing here, I'm gon na be watching my head pressure as I do that to see what the system does. This is an R 22 system.

Whoo, head pressure is climbin, that's too high, so something's up there, so the condenser looks like crap we're gon na start with cleaning that condenser, because it's really dirty and today is a really hot day. So it's a process to get hoses up here, but I'm gon na go ahead and get started on that and go get my hoses and we'll get this guy cleaned properly and since we're gon na have the hose up here, we'll go ahead and clean the other Ones to the disconnect switch - it's not very thick, so you should be able to rinse it from this side, but I'll try to get it from the other side too. Yeah, that's not even coming through very good. So I'm gon na go and use some condenser coil cleaner sprayed on there, but that work some magic, real, quick start foaming up.
This condenser is pretty trashed, though I want to leave the cleaner on there, too long trying to being lazy, because I don't want to pull the condenser fan motor all right, so we got the connector cleaned and again, I'm not spending a bunch of time because we're Going to be talking him into replacing this equipment, so it's time to go ahead and reset this pressure control again. So it's right down in here back here check our head pressures and see what we're looking like, condensers moving air. Now we're still gon na check that condenser fan muttering. He asked moment we'll still a modality sugars good with the running kind of high.

Our box stamp is about probably 50 degrees in there right now, let's check some things, so we got a discharge line. It's called coming out of the condenser going into the receivers cool, so our head pressure control valve something's going on here. We shouldn't be this high. I don't think our head pressure.

Control valve is bypassing, but our head pressures way too high and what is up here so discharge line? The compressor is high. It's hot! Going to the head pressure control, it's cool! Coming out of the head pressure control valve there. We go has just taken a few minutes to calm down all right. Let's look at our site, glass, soy glass is kind of hidden and it's clear, it's kind of hard to see we're gon na.

Let this run for a few minutes. It's currently about a hundred degrees up, so it's like one thing after another with this unit, so what I did was, I did a real, quick test where I front seated the suction service valve, at the compressor just to see how low would pull the wooden pole Past 14 psi, but then I opened it back up and it's not turning on we're at 85 psi right now, so I got a jump into that low pressure control and see why it's not letting the units run on it's right here. It's just a faulty pressure control, I whacked it and it started right out. I made an adjustment to a temporary we're just going to get a big long list of things.

Hopefully get this thing down like for about a hundred new trees. Right now, it's funny because it's like October 24th or something like that, it's 100 degrees outside go figure. So far we have a condenser, that's rotted out. We have a suction valve on the compressor, that's weak! All right! You can't do that test on every single Copeland.
Compressor or every compressor for that matter, but I happen to know that the RS series compressors this is an Rs 70. I know that they'll pull down into a negative vacuum from the factory, but there's some compressors like the CR compressors they're meant for air conditioning, but they use them for extended medium temp situations, those things they don't pull into a vacuum from the from experience. So you just got ta use the Copeland mobile ops, your best bet to diagnose compressor issues. I want to point something else out to when these condensers become so deteriorated, that the fins are.

My kids, if you could tell like they're just disintegrated in my hands, they're. Actually, not making good contact with a copper in there anymore either. So there's copper right here and if they don't make good contact with the copper, they don't transfer the heat properly and it can really start to affect the operation of the unit. So it's not just a matter of the aluminum fins rotting away.

It's that the aluminum fins aren't really seated around the copper anymore. So it's still transfers some heat, but it won't transfer as much when that happens. So something you got to think about yeah. These things are just.

I could just move it right across the copper. One. Last thing I wanted to check was I put the unit into defrost. This particular unit has a liquid line.

Solenoid valve right here, that's not controlled by the thermostat down in here. I want to see if the unit will pump down or if it's going to set off a high head pressure. This would be an indicator of a possible overcharge, so we're just watching to see the head pressure is climbing, so it might be slightly overcharged. It looks like it's dropping now, but I can imagine with the dirty condenser that it would probably be part of the reason why I might have tripped the head pressure control when I got here.

This unit was just out of a defrost, but put it back over at the time right, and I think it's like sure, or something like that, I'll check the time. So it's pulling off it's gon na take a while it's 50 degrees in here they got a lot of products and hair. So as soon as that cools off the Box, temp will come down like I said, I'm gon na talk them to replace in this equipment. It's in bad shape, but the customer buys in themselves there they're all in but putting new equipment in.

So so I'm running like really high head pressure - and I'm really wondering like you know, is that condenser still dirty my head pressures about 340 psi. That's 140 degree. Saturation temperature, it's about a hundred and five hundred and three degrees outside. So it's about you know a little bit high.

So what I ended up doing was taking some co2 and I wanted to see what would happen first off. Look at what it did to the condenser, the condenser - I don't know if you guys can tell the difference, but it just like it's deteriorating the cadets that the condenser definitely stuff came out. It's probably not gon na show it now, but like a bunch of stuff came out - and I blew it from the inside out to now, but the condenser is just like. I said the condenser is so damaged that it's not making proper heat transfer anymore and when you try to clean it, it just falls apart.
It's just disintegrating. I mean look at it, it's just you know, so you can only do so much. So that's why I'm gon na talk them into replacement. Now, like I said, the customer is gon na buy their own equipment.

It's a restaurant chain, they buy their own stuff. I just install it for them, so you know I'll make the recommendations new condensing unit, but I can't see them changing just to convince some unit. The evaporator is just as old, so we'll talk them into a replacement. Will change the refrigerant over to 448.

A will run a new line set, so they'll get a new evaporator new condenser at least up. So I'm going to propose to them. You know they'll have to make that decision on a facility's level. So at this point, its operating the box is coming down in 10.

We're definitely running really warm. Luckily, we have a cool-down coming Monday. It's Thursday right now, so hopefully we'll make it through the weekend. But you can see it's just.

It's really warm outside right. Now, 106, 105 and it's October, 25th or 24. You know it's a trip anyways, so that's all! That's all we can do for today. We'll just put everything together and let the customer make whatever decisions they want to make.

"Facility decisions"…have to sneak 4 different "parts and repair" nvoices under $900 to get a new condenser and evaporator swap that wasn't included in 2020 capitol budget.

i work for a big american refrigeration contractor in nova scotia, canada. up here our liquor stores are ran by the provincial government. when we have to do maintenance at the liquor stores, one of the first items on the checklist is to make sure the beer w/i setpoint is 50F, no more, no less.
They say it is because the beer boxes get soggy and break. i call BS. sad province we live in, lol.

I know in the past you mentioned the large package units and condensers stick around for a long time because of all the hoops (earthquake validation, etc) CA puts businesses through to install new equipment.
