In this video, Joshua Griffin goes through how there are so many different ductless mini-split brands, the differences between them, and how one seems to stand above the rest. He goes through how he narrows down each brand from the list, removing them when they don't meet certain expectations. After, removing all of these less adequate brands, you'll see how Josh narrows it down to Daikin.

Are you in the market for a mini split? I Want to do an overall video? If You are going through trying to select what mini split to get and more specifically what brand to get and I'm not going to be bashing any brands in this video. but I'm going to break it down and I'm going to tell you exactly who you should probably be selecting. Now when you're looking at a mini split I Believe that there's more that you should be looking at than just necessarily the specs. I Think you should be looking at who your contractors are offering in your area, not necessarily the sear levels or the decel levels always.
And the reason I say that is is a 22 Seer mini split that much better than say a 20 Seer mini split in the grand scheme of things I don't know that it is I don't know that you're going to see that much more savings I would care more about the things we're going to go over. So if I were break this down into a number of brands that are offered in our country, the first thing I would do is if I had say all the brands laid out and I was getting quotes from my local contractors is I would look at what are the parts availability for these Brands right? There's all kinds of Brands out there. there's probably honestly thousands of Brands Now maybe there's only about 10 manufacturers, but there's thousands of Brands They'll take the same equipment and attach all these different stickers to them or all these different branding and so on to them but same products. And when I'm looking in my local area that if I needed a part in my area here in Virginia I wouldn't know to call I wouldn't I would have to call the manufacturer directly and be like where do I get parts for your stuff here I don't have a good supplier I don't have a good distributor that sells that Brand's parts or even equipment in my area and so on our chart here.
If I were to lay out those 10 biggest brands of mini splits, that would probably knock out half of them, the next thing I would look at is support support to you as the homeowner but also support to me as the contractor. If I've got an issue with a mini split and it's given me some weird error code I need to be able to call tech support I need to have somebody on the other end of the phone that understands what I'm saying I understand what they're saying and we can figure out getting a a little bit of support to figure out what's wrong with this system to get the customer's system repaired and so on our list of 10 or so brands that would probably knock out a couple. The next thing I would look at is options. What sort of options does this brand offer? Do they just offer one or two options? or do they have an array of options I Can tell you that the brand that we sell that we're going to eventually narrow this down to to be completely honest with you, they offer a number of options.
They offer a budget friendly single on toone Mini Split option but they also offer their top-of-the-line option that has an array of being able to pair with mini splits, be able to pair with conventional gas furnaces all on the same outdoor unit, and also having multiple options with the mini split heads themselves. So wall mount floor Mount ducted Mini Splits Ceiling cassettes Some of them may make this Great Cookie of a product I use the analogy of Grandma's homemade cookies. They make this great homemade cookie, but they only offer just that they've They've offered this High Seer unit for example, but they don't really have Parts availability or multiple options when it comes to looking at different applications. To me, that makes a difference. Next, let's talk about warranty. Some of these companies out there want to say oh, they're all same. All Min splits are the same, but we're only going to give you a 5year warranty or we're only going to give you a 10year warranty or we're only going to give you a longer extended warranty. say like 12 years.
But if your contractor is not in our system and and they're not meeting certain quotas and they're not a part of our dealer program, then we're going to penalize you the homeowner and maybe not give you that warranty that longer extended warranty. Those are all things that I would take into account. I I Want to know what's the warranty and do I Get penalized as long as it's installed by a licensed contractor and installed properly. Maybe they're not a part of this special program I Still want to have a good warranty I don't want to be penalized for that and so on our list of contractors after these last two.
With the multiple options and how great the warranties now, I'm starting to narrow it down to maybe only a couple Brands now, maybe only a few. Brands And so the next thing I would look at is refrigerant. We're going through a big change right now. We're going through the phase down of 410A Refrigerant.
It's about to be completely gone when it comes to new equipment being sold and bought here in. North America You're not going to be able to purchase fora refrigerant. We've seen different brands go different routes. We have some brands that are going with these new refrigerants that are untested.
Nobody even really knows what they're going to get at the end of the day because there's literally nobody else installing them and now you're going to just roll them out and make North America the guinea pig. For all this, or you've got some companies that are saying hey, we're going to go with a refrigerant that's tested. It's in thousands of homes across the world. It's a single component refrigerant, meaning it's not Blended like some of these other refrigerants we've gone through other videos on why I think R32 is the best solution for North America Right now, as far as I know, there's only a couple brands that are looking at R32 as the solution and I think that it's a mistake for anyone to choose otherwise I Think we all know that there's probably going to come a day in the future where we're going to be looking at refrigerants that have lower Gwps than even these newer refrigerants. but at the moment I think that R32 makes the most sense I think it's going to have less issues and I think it's been tested just because it's been used for years, overseas and other countries. And so now if we're looking at the list of brands for our Min splits now, we're really narrowing it down and now we may only have one left. or maybe two. The last thing I would encourage you to look at, especially if you are wanting this mini split to heat your home at times.
now. I'm not saying it's got to be your primary source of heating, but just because a system says that it's a heat pump and it's going to produce heat in the winter. One thing we have realized is how they don't all perform the same in heating. Yeah, they all blow cold in the summer, but do they do the same in the winter? And that's where I Think there's a clear winter here when you look at all of these aspects across the board when you look at the performance of their products in heating mode.
In addition to Parts availability Support options, warranty, and the refrigerant that they're choosing. for us, it's been Dyan Dy has been the top-of-the-line choice. They don't major in the miners. They produce very reliable, premium equipment that have multiple options that have Parts availability that has the support and it comes with that 12year warranty on a lot of their products.
not penalizing you as the homeowner if the contractor is not meeting certain quotas and a part of this crazy program, right? I'll put a link to their website down below. you can check out the different options they have for Mini Splits They've got their Vrv life line that does things that no other line does when it comes to pairing with gas furnaces Mini Splits and so on. and they've got some budget friendly options as well. Check them out, let me know your thoughts.
Comment down below: Do you have a contractor offering a particular brand in your area and you're just not sure? I'd love to hear about that if you like this video I Think you'll like this one even more. It's where I Talk about the location that you install. That mini split matters. Thanks for watching Hit that subscribe button.
We'll see you next time.
Most are really much the same PRC-made and not made to last. The top-tier brands appear to be a different story though. Service area Ottawa??
Mitsubishi has a few things- One way ceiling cassette, plug and play wireless thermostat add in to any unit, and best efficiency in the small 1-1 units. Daikin’s quality is just as good, but product selection, and applications are limited.
Why make it so difficult in choosing a minisplit system. All that is needed is looking at what has been working best in all other countries. The United States is soo far behind using mini split systems. Years behind.
Im off grid and I’m looking into the EG4 solar mini’s any idea how they are?
Mitsubishi with hyper heat is still king for cold climate heat pumps at least here in Ohio. Daikin seems promising but very few contractors sell them around me.
Parts can be difficult on any brand. ( Yes on the minor line.) I think the refrigerant change is good.
I'm interested in your opinion.
Thanks. I was literally shopping today!
These are growing in popularity in my area. Especially for additions, lake houses, mother-in-law suites, bonus rooms above garages 🛠️
