Okay, so I'm out here looking a second opinion on a walk-in cooler for one of my restaurants that I don't normally service, but they asked me to come out and do a second opinion. The previous contractor was not lined to them when they told him that the coil has multiple leaks, it's in pretty bad shape. It definitely does it's got. You know the drain, pins, all corroded, so not knocking the contractor.
For that. The point that I want to make is is that they had added dye to the system and I'm not gon na lie and say I've never used dye. I have, but I'm not a fan of using it, and I'm gon na explain to you. So this system has dye in it and dye is not the best way to do a leak check.
In my opinion, in most situations, okay and what's happening here is look up there. I've got a refrigerant leak. Okay, the dye is not picking it up. The UV red light is not picking it up at all.
My leak detector hit it my electronic and then big blue soap bubbles in it. So this is a use case for the big blue, perfect, okay, big blue, picked up the leak and died in.
I'm not an hvac guy at all, but I'm also guessing that the dye would get washed away with the condensation and rain and any water that happend to be there for one reason or another. I beleive that the amount of dye is very small, so you kinda need a relativelly big amount that leak out to show up. But since the dye is not a gas, it may also flow around the hole for a while before it finally get to said hole. Plus, if there is some water, it could get washed away in part or fully… This make it not that effective… However the soap, will foam as soon as there is a leak.
Good one, goes to hiper-supra-favorites folder. My boss is fan of dye & I wanna die. Are you in Barrhaven ?
I've used big blue lots of times. It'll find the micro-est of micro leaks.
Those type of joint leaks can be fixed to buy more time.
Fantastic, klings to all joints and washes off easily. draw back is temp, it will freeze.
👍👍👍 Service area Orleans??
Never use dye only thing inside refrigeration system is refrigerant &'refrigerant oil never use dye been doing refrigeration for over 25 years.
I do automotive AC and i have refused to work on them if it has dye for a few reasons but the big one i don't want the crap in my machans. Service area Nepean??
👍
Never used dye, I just use an Inficon, or Big Blu (or what ever brand the supply houses have.)
Ever looked for a leak for a long time with that UV light? Can't be good for your eyes.
I had a leak on a p-trap in a walk in cooler that big blue couldn't find. Found it with Master brand leak detector which is thinner. So now I carry both. But never use dye. Had lots of systems with dye already in them but it never showed the leak.
Great quick lil video. Guess you'll get that contract now lol. Are you in Ottawa ?
Great video. Leak detector, soap bubbles. 👍👍👍
Bonus video 👍
During most "compressor classes" held by manufacturers. They say dye is frowned upon and recommended as a last resort. It can and eventually will cause problems in most systems. I am a fan of big blue.
When I did commercial h10 was pound 4 pound the best leak detector and then any kind of sonic. Sonic is the ish
In the 5 years of refrigeration I've only used dye 3 times and that's always been last resort when I was doing HVAC before coming over to refrigeration I had never had to use dye even though my boss kept it in our trucks
Not a fan of dye but I am a fan of using multiple leak detection methods. They all seem to work together pretty good to get the job done.
Not a fan of dye at all. I'm not for adding anything in a system the manufacturer didn't add from the start. I love big blu. Refrigeration Technologies sent me a great product test box a few weeks ago and I'm loving their coil cleaners too now
Question why is it that theses style evap so popular in ca? It seems the are a headace
Totally agree with you about the dye, but Big Blu sucks in my opinion.
Nu-Cagon Cal-Blu is a way better product. I say this mainly because it has better viscosity.
