I had a service call on a Carrier AC that wasn't working properly, this AC feeds their office/ kitchen area so management wanted it fixed ASAP. After i diagnosed the initial problem I found a few more issues. I ended up cleaning the dirty indoor blower wheel ,replacing a bad motor pulley, and installing a temporary thermostat until the EMS company can send out a new thermostat

So today we have a call on a couple ACS, not working. This is one of my locations out and looking to California, so it's nice and warm it's currently. I think, like the beginning of the May, like the eighth, maybe or something so it's already starting to get hot out here. I think the current temperature I haven't measured yet, but it's probably 95 98.
So far I get hotter throughout the day. This is definitely the first heat for us these first couple weeks of heat, so we're getting a lot of a/c calls, especially out in this area. So their complaint is is that they have two ACS, that the thermostats are blank and they've got just heat complaints all over the restaurant. I already know that there's more problems from the last time we did there PM about three months ago.
I noted a couple ACS. Actually, like three or four ACS that had issues, so I just reminded them, and they wanted me to go ahead and look at everything. The first thing this is the AC right here, AC number five. This is for their kitchen area, slash office.
When I first came up here, though, they've got like a little split system that feeds part of their kitchen too, and the suction line was all frosted up. So I have a feeling that units iced up. I know that that unit has some major air flow issues, because it was never installed correctly. For now, I just pulled the disconnect for that unit just to let it defrost so that way.
The evaporators running defrost that coil and I'm gon na jump on this kitchen AC because it's for their office and they're needing that first, so we're gon na get into it and see what happens so. I've got the control section opened up. This restaurant uses an EMS system, energy management, so first thing we're gon na check is line voltage coming into the unit from the disconnect switch to see if we have three-phase power and then after that, we'll check low voltage, let's go ahead and see what we can Figure out here: okay, 2:06, 211. 2:07.
So we've got three phase voltage coming in so we're good there. Then we could just go over here to this low voltage terminal strip and check to see what's going on here. So the complaint is, is that they have a blank thermostat. So artist C gets me 26 volts well, and we've got a blank thermostat.
So that already tells me that we've got a bad thermostat I'll, just check off, see to everything else. There's nothing else going on. So right off the bat yeah, it's zero volts, so our to see we have 24 volts and then everything else is dead. So this sends voltage down to that thermostat.
But the thermostat is controlled by the computer system in the cloud so that thermostat not having to display means that we've got a bad thermostat. So right now, what I'm gon na do is I'm gon na go ahead and jump it out and then test the unit out and see how it works. So I went ahead and put a couple jumpers. This is carrier board you can grab are off of over here, so it's a little bit easier, but I jumped R to G and our y1 and our systems running contactors are pulled in so dead giveaway. We have a bad thermostat, I'm still going to go ahead and gage up just to check the rest of the unit, because I'm looking at the big picture, I'm not just having tunnel vision and stopping at the thermostat we're gon na solve the whole problem. You know whether or not there's other issues or not we'll find out, but we're gon na look, and this is exactly why I say we're gon na to look at the big picture. Look at that belt now blower wheels hammer to that. Blower wheel needs to be taken out and cleaned, but we got a loose belt.
So if we just condemn the thermostat and came out to change the thermostat, we wouldn't know everything that was going on. You always have to look at the big picture. These customers will appreciate that more so, especially on a facilities level. They will appreciate it because they don't want to keep paying you to come back out here to do stupid, stuff so and then pulled the belt off.
Don't know how well you guys can see that, but that thing is pretty caked up with goo and stuff. Hopefully it didn't mess up the balance of the blower wheel. So when I clean it, I'm hoping the thing don't rattle like crazy. Sometimes that can happen if the thing runs with a dirty, blower wheel for a really long time.
It'll actually balance itself out because of the weight and then you'll go and clean the blower wheel. And then the thing will need a new blower wheel because it's out of balance, the other thing I noticed is this pulley is pretty glazed over and it's starting to go bad holy SH Eve. Whatever you want to call it, I know, there's always a battle there to call it a pulley or achieve in other correct ways. It's an adjustable sheath, but I call it a motor pulley and I call this the drive pulley, there's all kinds of different ways that people refer to them.
Some people call this the drive pulley. Some people call this the driven pulley. I call this the motor pulley. I call this the drive pulley, so we're gon na need to get a new pulley for this guy and then we're gon na need to pull that blower assembly and clean it and get a new thermostat for it's not that hard to pull these blower assemblies.
Maybe 15 screws - you know just just go to think about it - for a sec got this thing pulled out. I'm just gon na go ahead and rinse this guy real, quick, this one's not too bad. You get to it soon. You can fix these problems, but this will definitely cause airflow issues for sure again, our main problem is is a bad thermostat, but we want to fix this a/c.
We want to fix the complete picture, so we're gon na hose this guy off, get a cleaned out. Put it back in got to be careful too, because this is a Down shot. A/C, there's a bunch of junk from the blower assembly blowing the crap down on the heat exchanger. So when I pressurize this thing, it's going to have more airflow than usual and we potentially are gon na blow lint out of all the AC ducts. So what we'll do? Because it's a down shot I'll, take that panel off and put it on the supply. Duct going downstairs turn it on and blow the crap out of the AC before we turn it on into the ductwork, I'm going to use some coil cleaner on this blower assembly to get the hard caked on lint and stuff. That's in there off a couple things you want to be cautious about. This is one of those plastic roofs a lot of times.
They don't want this coil cleaner on the roof, so you got to make sure you're minimal on your concentration and make sure you rinse it down as best as you can there's only so much. You can do also be cautious about you know getting coil cleaner inside the bearings you don't. I don't know what that would do to the bearing, but you necessarily don't want it to penetrate inside of them. So just I'm gon na take it easy around the bearings, but I'm just gon na blast the whole inside of the case.
Let it sit for a minute, then rinse it all off. Just using a Calgon coil gun with some new bright condenser coil cleaner. You know I'm gon na, let it sit for a few minutes and then we'll give it a good rinse and we'll try to wash all that stuff down the drain as best as possible. It's already doing a good job of knocking some of that stuff off.
So another thing to remember is this: isn't going to be perfect, so also pay attention to what rinses out these blower wheels have weights on them? Usually they look like fancy paper clips. I don't know if you can see these right here, it's kind of hard, but there's a weight back. There turn it around, and let you see one over here that right there is a weight and you want to be careful. We don't wash those off got the blower assembly done and what I did was actually took the nozzle off my hose.
I rinse down the roof and then I'm letting that water kind of flood, so it dilutes the the puddle that I can't really wash so I'm just kind of letting it you know, mix with that big puddle. Unfortunately, the way this roof is sloped. It has a hard time - and you get a big standing puddle over here, so we're just going to let the water run and kind of dilute it down and run it into the drain. Hold the supply access panel off and then positioned it over the supply hole and then what I'm gon na do is I'm just gon na brush the heat exchanger off down in here just brush this big ol chunker's off? If I can, it's gon na be hard and then that way, it'll just blow out of the unit, hopefully and not down into their kitchen.
This is gon na I mean it's not gon na be perfect, so another one of those polishing, a turd things. So we'll go from there. Blower assembly turned out good nice and clean as clean as it can be much better. So that's nice, so I'm gon na brush this thing off I'll, probably grab my vacuum: real, quick vacuum out and then start the blower assembly up blower assembly back in the motors mounted. I got to figure out these wires. These things had these zip ties that had these little plastic automotive connectors that push through and grab - and I couldn't really get him out very well - is only able to get one out and that's this one. So I popped that one back in we're going to show you how I fix these. So if you cautiously take these things apart, just cut the zip tie right push the old piece through clip off the excess, and now you can run a new zip tie right through that little clip and it still has the connector on it.
Then you could still have your connection setup going on and everything can be nice and snug no problems so back on. You don't want to run it for too long, because the motor is probably overloaded right now, but now it's blowing out like it should be. So I got a new pulley on this one. Definitely bad last thing I did was I installed a temporary thermostat.
I pulled off all the old thermostat wires for the BMR EMS system, energy management and install just a cheapy thermostat and dropped it down in the returned temporarily. So that way they can have an AC. I secured the wires walk around here, look down in there. Okay, this is just the throwaway stat until they can get a corporate approval.
I basically have it set and cooling for 74 degrees and have the fan in the on position all the time. So it's going to run this little Hardaway. That way, we can have a temporary solution, so they don't have to go without an AC until the energy management company gets the new one out here turn this guy on you.
Today is the hottest day on record in Canada – 30 degrees above average. Somehow I stumbled upon this channel.
I enjoy your video's. Learning tricks even though been doing HVAC & R for 45 years. I would call an adjustable sheive what it is.
Drive pulley and Slave pulley
Hey Chris, just wondering if it would be possible to put a motor pulley the right diameter instead of ajusting an ajustable one? Thanks Service area Nepean??
So you guys get really strong heat wave you guys I know get to 120 F we Canadians get like 95 degrees 5
Hey man I’ve never seen the 3rd leg of incoming power on a separate device before I was wondering if you could give me some info on it.. thanks
Use coil cleaner and wash out the squirrel cage & housing next time, you'd be surprised how brand new it makes it look,. Peace Brother!
I think "adjustable motor pulley" and "blower pulley" might be good terms, as they are rather self-descriptive.
Completely random and off topic from HVAC, but it's a good story. My mom used to work at one of the local hospitals. While she was there working, a water main or fire line over one of the office sections ruptured (never found out why). The hospital security team was on duty and responded to the fire codes to see what was going on. When they arrived and found water pouring down in the offices they called the fire departments to come turn off the building's water, and then stood there eating donuts. Kinda funny, and also kinda sad. Not only the office equipment in those rooms was ruined, but any personal belongings were soaked and any paperwork that had been out was completely gone.
There was also another time where it got even crazier. The lab techs at the hospital were working with blood and special testing agents and such for research. Well apparently one of the reagents is highly explosive if it crystallizes (Yeah, let's put it in a hospital then!). Well, overnight after a shipment one of the freezers got too cold and froze the reagent. In a frozen form the stuff was perfectly safe, it was only when the fluid evaporated that it would become dangerous. Well someone found the frozen reagent and their first thought was to call the bomb squad. The entire building was evacuated and the entire police force showed up over a bottle of frozen blood thinner.
I like the throw away temp thermostat to get them running until corporate sends new one, I assume you will be one to install?
Do you work on pneumatic controled systems?
What’s this restaurant called?
Your are right MOTOR PULLY Are you in Nepean ?
Do you have any other calls? Sounds like you take your sweet time
T STAT MIGHT HAVE DEAD BATTERY
3 PH POWER WITH 2 POLE CONTACTORS
Looking at everything and fixing all the issues with satisfy the customers all the time
Belts loose…the PM was not done properly Service area Ottawa??
Really been enjoying your videos just started school for HVACR been real helpful identifying devices and troubleshooting
Love newbrite
Power pully
True and honest professional always looking at the big picture. Cause if you don't and are back two days later customers start questioning why wasn't those fixed on the first visit.
On corporate accounts do you have to get approval to do the extras?
Thanks for your great work on sharing your knowledge…👍👍
Question…. From your point of view what brand is the best in rooftop units???
Since the motor is the one "driving" the blower wheel then the blower wheel pulley is "the" driven pulley.
Is the discharge 434.9 psi reguler on 410 a.
I'm so grateful that I stumbled upon your video! I'm still new to the hvac/r trade. I got my universal 3 years ago and did residential for 2 years and then I decided to go commercial hvac. I still have alot to learn, and watching your videos helps me further my understanding of the trade. Awesome videos and I'm now subscribed
Good gob bro 👍👍👍
When you check the low voltage for cooling. Are you suppose to have 24v present from
common to y1
Common to g?
hey the fridge with the swap cooler
Easy way to remember, the motor has the sheave the fan has the pulley
My only question is what is your bill, I find it hard to get residential to clean blower wheels etc etc Service area Orleans??
You are an over achiever and I like that, thank you for your videos. I hope to be a great technician like you one day. Are you in Barrhaven ?
I really like your videos.
How much you charge the customer for a job like that.
Just to have an idea about the market in the US.
I'm a Hvac thenician used to work in Haiti.
How could you determine the motor pulley is bad? Thanks.
Great work man. Thanks for the advice and for sharing this video. Are you in Kanata ?
Just for the really smart ones:what is the major difference between a barfridge and a medium size aircon?
Since I startet with refrigiration I know how important condensers and fans are!if you can't blow away the heat everything stays hot!!but I think only a few people know that?? Are you in Ottawa ?
Did everyone hear that?
LOOK AT THE BIG PICTURE
thermostat wire could have break in common wire it causing 24 not to reach the thermostat otherwise good diagnosis
Just start looking your videos they fantastic, very educated, good job.
Where can you buy a pulley in La Quinta? It’s in BFE.
Cleaning old blower wheels can be tricky. 20% of the time, The squirrel cage fins will fall apart. I Find that darn grease and gunk actually helps keep that wheel together.
I noticed the suction line on my 2 ton goodman heat pump was not cold when running in the cooling mode so I put my guages on the unit and it had 45 degrees superheat. suction line temperature was 68 degrees and there is a fixed metering device on the evaporator coil. I added some r-410A and lowered the superheat and now it's working much better Service area Kanata??
Nice work brother
"95F out today in may" "Starting to get hot out here" Jeez I think I'd melt in Cali.
I really appreciate your videos. Do you think you can upload a longer, detailed service call for the novice? As in all of your thought processes going into the call, mentioning all the basics, as well as naming and defining all the parts around you, showing us how you cleaned the filters/coils/requiring contractors and what not.
I’m starting a commercial service job, but I’m only in my first semester of trade school, so all these small details (what to do/what not to do) are important to me. Thanks a lot!
I just watched the video where you worked on the refrigeration rack behind the Carrier. I love how thorough you are. Not enough techs take the time to make sure everything is taken care of. Too many just trying to fix and go. Great vids man! Keep em coming!
Very nice 👍 work sir . Today first time I show your videos I’m enjoy watching. Because I’m Hvac Technician 👨🔧. Sir have your Instagram page if you have send . I following your page
