How Does a Compound Cooling Semi-Hermetic Compressor Work?
In this HVAC training video, Alex Orr explains the operating principles of a compound cooling semi-hermetic compressor. This type of compressor has two stages of compression, allowing it to work efficiently with very low suction pressures.
Alex shows a cutaway compressor and describes the flow path:
Refrigerant enters at low pressure, around 14 PSI, through the suction inlet.
It is compressed to an inner-stage pressure of 40-60 PSI in the first-stage pistons.
This inner-stage gas is then fed into the discharge head, where it's compressed to a high discharge pressure of around 200 PSI.
So instead of a single compression from low to high pressure, the compound compressor goes through suction, inner stage, and then discharge, which allows the compressor to handle ultra-low evaporation temperatures down to -60°F in low-temp applications.

This is a compound cooling hermetic compressor. This is the incoming suction on this rack. That pressure was running around 14 PSI. It is a low temp rack so pressures are very low on these incoming it goes into the suction heads.

These have two Pistons each and they are compressing that 14 PSI into what is known as the inner stage. This line here. this goes into the bell end of the compressor and helps cool it down. There are a couple places to check that that pressure rests more around around 40 to 60 PSI and is different than the suction pressure that interstage pressure is now fed into the discharge head.

This compresses that interstage pressure into discharge pressure more around 200 instead of going just suction. To discharge, these compound cooling compressors go suction to Inner stage to discharge 10 psi to 50 psi to 200.

Vacuum pumps do a two stage, that is cool AF. How are the pressure to ambient pressure swings on that thing? Dayum I'd like to tinker with that. On another note, dude I wish you gave Android instructions, the lil Indian dude with the porn music is annoying, but he is still faster than the software support. 😮 No doubt you give Brian Orr a run for his money. 😊 💯 Service area Orleans??

Is that not just 2 stage refrigeration?
