Need to drain your hot tub water when it's cold out? Wait, you actually don't want to drain it completely in freezing temperatures. While you might think an empty hot tub will protect it from freezing damage, it's actually the opposite. After draining your hot tub, there is still water in the Jets filter well and pipes and that can crack and expand if left in the cold. If you have to change your water during freezing temperatures, do it in batches.

remove 6 to 12 in of water at a time, then refill and reheat the water between these partial drains. While it's not the same thing as completely draining and refilling your hot tub, it'll protect your equipment until the weather warms up.
