This was a call on a Delfield prep table that was freezing the food, after a few troubleshooting steps I replaced some sensors and got it back up and running.

This video is brought to you by spore'ln quality, integrity and tradition at a region, and the complaint is that bottom was freezing food and causing problems, and they had some sort of an error code on here a lot of this process. So we got to get a defrosted first before we do anything all right, we're gon na do until we get password the passwords of 187 we're checking the defrost sensor to see if the unit will go in while it's frozen up. I want to see what the defrost tensor says. 187.
Then I believe I push this button ps3 and we're gon na go to service push this button. We're gon na go to e t1. That's the defrost sensor we hit enter and it says 38 degrees. I don't know how accurate that is, because we're encased with ice.
I would think it would be at 32 degrees push this one. This one is an older control, so one, let me see, the our state doesn't have another sensor, so we're gon na go ahead and back on out by hitting the defrost. So the air temp sensor says 40 and the other one is in the 30s, but we're completely covered in ice, which makes me wonder if we have a bad sensor, so we're gon na pull the product out, defrost it and go from there hold the control out. Just to investigate to make sure there's no water damage, that's the bottom of control.
It doesn't look like we get a lot of water damage problems. So the next thing that I'm going to do is go ahead and force a defrost just to see how it reacts. Go hold down the defrost button. Temp control turned off, I heard there, its indie press want to make sure the fans are all running they are.
I can hear him so we got a defrost. It now check that out, while it's in defrost the fan shut off a little fan switch went away. That doesn't seem right. Those fans should still be running the entire time, while it's in defrost something funky there all right, I'm working on getting a defroster right now we're about halfway there.
Luckily, I got a floor drain right here. I thought about grabbing the water hose, but we'll just keep going with the pump sprayer for now, once we get that done, we're gon na pull the probes out in Testament ice water and see what the amount should be. 15 17 K ohms in ice water. So I have a feeling: it's gon na be a probe issue.
I did talk to delfield and they said that it is normal for the evaporator fan motor to cycle during defrost. So we'll see all right. Delfield wants 15 17 K ohms of resistance across the sensors. I'm testing the defrost sensor right now in ice water and I'm getting 5 K ohms, so they also recommend it on this particular unit that if I have one bad sensor that I changed them both so we're gon na go ahead and change the probes.
All right. We're back today, I just had to disassemble the box. Again I bring this up quite often, but even though I knew I was coming back the next day, I still reassembled the entire box, even the coil. I don't leave things taken apart.
That just asks for a headache, so we're gon na go ahead and pull the box out run new sensors. It shouldn't take me too long. I work on a lot of these. So little tip gets you a ratchet ranch. This one has a pivoting head for these screws right here, just Plus that all 5/16, then the screw gun will hit the rest of makes your life a lot easier. This whole thing is about being prepared and trying to predict the problems you might run into to make this whole thing go easier. I'm pretty familiar with changing these, so I try to do as many steps and eliminate you know problems so do everything I can from the I cut all the zip ties and then we're basically going to fish everything through from back here now see I tapes, the New sensors to it and we're just going to pull everything through into that side because trying to get these big giant plugs through there is going to be a difficult challenge for the and wire everything back in the same zip tie at the same up. There running the same channel, the air temp sensor gets a little Jesus clip that holds it in place.
We're looking good we're gon na put all the covers back on now, all right. Here's a little tech tip so we're running everything zip tying it back in, but we get to this little clip right here this little round guy and it goes through the side and it was really difficult to get the the big giant fitting through it as it Was it's what you do because it goes back in there is clip it clip it with some dikes and it'll slide right over and then it'll still clip in and hold everything nice and safe, the bushing. Will you see it still goes in there? It still holds everything nice and good, but I was able to just fish the wires through everything's back together. Nice and flush like it should be and we'll deal with these sensor wires over on the other side and don't forget well I'll, show you, on the other side very important is to tie a knot once you get the sensor wires wrapped through.
So that way, nobody can accidentally tug the wires out of the control so that knot prevents it from pulling through and then once I'm all done, I'll secure all the excess inside there turn power on, and this controller defaults to start in defrost. But that's good because for the first two minutes of defrost that you've operated family doors turn on. So we can make sure that the families are all working and I wired him correctly and I did so then to terminate defrost just hold down the defrost. But there we go we're out of defrost now it's 70 degrees in my box.
We're gon na go and put all the doors on and let it come down to temp and make sure that the sensors are accurate right. I confirmed that it's reading accurately now air temp is fine and then we can get in and check the coil temp. The coil temp is 28 degrees right now, so all we have to do is have both of these. At the same time, hold it in the past were 187, and this is just to verify coil temp right now. Now it's not currently running right now, but I should see a coil temp colder than hit enter, go to Ser et 1, enter 33 degrees. So and then this is to back out so yeah we're looking good Mike oil. Temp is a lot colder. Now and again, it's satisfied right now, so that's just the residual heat transfer that they're getting right now so yeah.
It looks like the fan just turned off. So we're gon na tell the customer to keep an eye on it. I'm going to turn the top section back on and we're good to go. We had a delfield prep table that wasn't working properly and when I arrived, the customer had told me that they saw an error code on there.
Now I don't remember what the error code was off the top of my head, but I do remember talking to tech support and found out that the error code meant that the unit had been consecutively running for 24 hours. Obviously, once I opened it up, I saw that the evaporator coil was completely iced up and then upon testing the defrost sensor. I found that we had a bad defrost sensor, so this unit has a defrost termination sensor essentially, and if the temperature of the defrost you know sensor basically is too high, then it won't allow the unit to go into a defrost or it'll terminate defrost early, which Would make sense why we have a nice stub coil? So you know normal operation, they get frost, build up on that evaporator coil and it just continues to run and every time it tries to go into defrost. It won't because the defrost sensor is sensing too high.
It was a little erratic, though, because when I first walked up and it was encapsulated in ice, it's hard to say whether 38 degrees, I think that's what it was reading, is wrong or not when it was encapsulated and ice, because that ice actually starts to act As an insulator and it doesn't allow, you know, it just creates a problem. So it's hard to say so. The best way to test it is actually to remove the probes and own them out in ice water like I ended up doing, and then I think it was reading like five K, ohms or something like that so went ahead and replace the sensors at this unit Was or basically at Dell fields recommendation, we went ahead and replaced both sensors because that's the way that they said to do it and you know the sensors have a high failure rate anyways. So I personally would have just replaced him both anyways but went ahead and watched the unit come down to temp after everything was good and also you guys didn't catch it, but I ended up the first day when I defrosted it.
It was taking too long with the pump sprayer, so I actually ended up grabbing the hose and they had really hot water, and I ended up cleaning the condenser on it too, and just finishing it off with the hose made. It go a lot faster because and the customer was cool with it again communication with the customer. I went up to him and I said: look I'm trying it with this pump spray it's taking forever. I can get a hose out, but it's gon na make a mess, you know and they were like well there's a drain right. There just go for it and I was like okay, it's gon na you know. Water's gon na go past the drain and they said that's fine, so we ended up making a really quick mess, but they were good with it. So you know things like that. Communicating with the customer and letting him know and the entire time that I was working.
I brought him through the call step by step. This is what I'm finding. This is what I'm seeing, and they were okay with everything. Okay, obviously returned the next day, because I didn't have the sensors on me.
I did happen to have him at the shop, though so he came back the next morning. That's why it was so much quieter in there. I was there first thing changed out the sensors and all was well after that. I follow several HVAC techs and experts. It’s interesting to see the different mindsets and different ways of accomplishing a task. When I found this channel I must of done a marathon through all the videos. I’m an overly certified systems administrator. And I deal with electronics myself but from a computer perspective and it’s fun to see certain similarities. All I have to say is everyone has their own ways of doing things and none are wrong. Learning about HVAC systems allowed me to under stand air conditioners, chillers, refrigerators, etc and how they work. Feels like I could almost run off and easily get certified in the field I’ve learned so much. But that industry isn’t for me. High respect for all who work in this industry. Does not appear to be anything easy at all. Appreciate the work you all do!

It's terrible that thermistors are junk nowadays. The quality of the thermistors are junk. The old mechanical temperature control would outlast the thermistors. Then again it cost pennies to make, eventhough they charge $$$$ more for the product. Job security.

Cleaning is a big issue in some places.
Fans don’t usually stay on unless it’s air defrost. Did that have a heater or bypass gas defrost?

Absolutely! Good call in putting things back together although you knew you'd be back. Restaurants always have people moving things around. Hard to explain a missing door to their cooler after someone mistakenly tosses it out. Or even purposefully!
I work in industrial low temp a lot and its typical for the fans to shut off during defrost to prevent water spray problems. Almost everything Ive ever worked on turns the fans off during the defrost cycle for that reason.

On those delfield coolers, I like to hot wire the evaporator fan motors so they’re on all the time as they do have issues of icing up and not just because of the sensors Are you in Kanata ?
If you're ever wondering why they call E, or C clips, or whatever you prefer to call them jesus clips have a habit of flying off when trying to remove them and the normal response is "Jesus, where did that thing go?". When they're gone, they're gone.

Not a fan of Del Field at all. They like Danfoss trash controls. Those thermistor's are poorly made and their evap coils rot out too quickly.
