This was a service call on a Hobart reach in cooler that wasn't temping, I found that the unit had a major refrigerant leak and was flat.

Working on a hobart, stand-up cooler thanks making some funny noises, did I say this thing is from 1998: it's never been. Servus refrigeration was still has process, ports that are sealed off. That's an awesome. The noise that I'm hearing is the invention, Pamela terribly blah blah.
My oldest jobs, another complaint is that the boxes I said a hot gas condensate drain heater down there. It really doesn't look too far out of it before I access anything, just kind of doing a visual. So before I put service ports on this tire, just going to do a quick recap, but this sounds like it's low on charge. The way that is running and what I notice is that if I can duplicate it down here in the condensate drain, and that's where I believe, I'm not picking up a trace of a leak with the electronic.
But I'm gon na go ahead and put service ports on this guy because it's just not coming down to temperature and the compressors running. I've done everything I can. I'm gon na have to weld on. So I'm gon na use my pinch off tool, use the vise grip, stop in chop tool and then I'm gon na braise on a service fitting all that process port right there coming on the liquid dryer and that process for coming off the compressor.
So I sanded it: we've got a pinch off tool on it. So now, when I cut it and then we'll brings on a fitting and then release the refrigerant into it, by holding up the vise grips, so I just braze it on. You can see. My pinch point right there and then I just hit it with some channel locks and just kind of crimp it the opposite direction, a lot pressure through and then I'm going to bleed the Schrader trying to bleed the air out of the system.
Saying doesn't look like it has much gas in it at all, so after all that that's ty ended up being completely out of refrigerant, just kind of how it goes. Sometimes. So I've got a pressurize with nitrogen right now we're going to try to find the leak check all right, so I pulled the Princip and motor out and the leak stuck in here actually here and I can feel it my fingers it's on the hot gas condensate Here and actually talked to the customer, because I told him I'll change that condensate here I'll make a new one I'll put new capillary tubes on it, change the dryer and put a new condenser fan motor and wave, but it's not worth it to them. They'd rather buy a new region, some snowman yeah, the one that they replaced.
This with isn't going to last half as long bummer, but it is what it is so a little recap. We had a service call on a two-door, stand-up, Hobart region that wasn't keeping temperature. When I arrived, I found that everything on the unit was running, but nothing was getting cold found that the system was actually out of refrigerant. I ended up having to put service ports on the unit, confirmed that went ahead and pressurized the unit with nitrogen found a major leak in the hot gas condensate drain.
Pan heater went ahead and talked to the customer and they opted to go ahead and replace the box. They decided that it wasn't worth the repair to them. What I was gon na do, though I was going to replace the drain pan heater, the condenser fan motor and blade put a new dryer on it, change the capillary tube and then recharge it, but the customer just decided, since the box was 20 years old. They just wanted to go ahead and call it quits and they're gon na buy a new box. So that's what we left that one it's kind of a bummer, because the customer really can't buy anything these days. That's gon na last as long as that box, and it's actually kind of sad because you know the the boxes from the previous. You know I should say the boxes that were made in the 70s lasted even longer. You know this one was made in the 90s.
Every every decade that they make him. Basically, you know they don't last as long. You know as metals get cheaper and all that good stuff, we kind of do it to ourselves. You know kind of like the Amazon effect.
We we we like everything cheaper. We want it more convenient faster that kind of stuff and when you do that the quality goes down anyways thanks a lot for watching my videos guys. I really appreciate it as usual, subscribe to my channel. If you, like my content, leave me a thumbs up.
Leave me a comment: take a look at the show notes of each video there's all kinds of important information in there and we'll see you guys next time. Thanks a lot.
I've heard on the refrigeration side that the copper is getting thinner to comply with efficiency standards and that results in more leaks.
Love to see the Hobarts still kicking , or serviceable for another round. Retired Hobart , and after 2000, it went to junk, competing with cheap imports. Bummer
In a situation like that I’d ask if I could dispose of the unit for them. Then turn around and “flip” it. Like you go on another call similar to that and have the same issue then you could offer to sell them the one that was fixed.
That was the first time i saw you crack a smile!
vids never let me down..
damn thing needs to be in antique road show
Power consumption can be an important factor. If the newer ones use way less power, than that could justify not lasting as long.. Especially after a few years of running 24-7 I'm sure the power cost outweighs the initial cost.. There's defiantly a break even point somewhere..
Bah, I wish they would have chosen to repair it….. The thing is, they usually don't know anything about the equipment and/or components. They only see numbers and from a business standpoint, I can understand why they choose to replace. But…, that doesn't mean I agree with it…Lol! Service area Orleans??
Leak detectors always gonna make fools out of us. I couldn’t tell you how many times that’s happened to me.
Good guy
Barely Getting into Refrigeration and I’m learning a lot from your videos bro
Plz give me a contact number
I remembered when I did work for restaurants pacthed up and refab that loop a few times… That old stuff takes a beating and still cools… Service area Ottawa??
It's hard to me to find that drain pan under the hot-gas heater line in the video… I'm a little bit confused.
what happen to jim pettinato do you know but you are the man i look forward to your videos all the time
Like always excellent work . what brand leak detector are you using,
I couldn't agree more with you, I even try to explain to my customers that they won't get yesterday's quality at today's prices… Had a customer scrap an almost perfect Silverking because of a small evap leak and then they replaced it with some Chinese hunk of shit crap… Needless to say there's a happy well looked after elderly Silverking fridge in my shop now keeping beer icy cold for Friday's. 😀
Good find kind of like a ptach unit. I feel the same way with quality of new units. Commercial side is sad when you only get a year warranty and can be in the same boat shortly after install.
I do very little refrigeration work, but I do like and appreciate your videos. Thanks for the great work / content! Are you in Nepean ?
😎😎😎 Service area Kanata??
would love to see something about fixing doors. Reach ins
Did they cover your time there? Hope so, I have had managers refuse to pay especially if it doesn't run. They bitch at shop saying I was rude to get out of paying.
Excellent job 👍👍
Another great video Chris. Customers are often penny wise and pound foolish. Last month, I had a customer
nice video man old school is always better , whats your opinion on the quiet cool do u recommend it ?
have a good weekend man
Good video.
Yep of course now in days not thing last long because companies they don’t make money off of it build one last 1&2 year So the consumer buy another one
I don't think Hobart is actually making reach-ins anymore… however they bought the Traulsen brand which is about the best you can get at the moment as far as I know, but in 1998 engineered obsolescence wasn't a thing yet xD
gran trabajo chris, al final ,,, algunos subtitulos en español no se puede.? ..
Igual algo logro deducir pero estaria genial que lo puedas hacer.
I always have a hard time explaining to customers that your new unit will probably last a good 5 years unlike your old 20 year one
Ever work on any of the Killions? Are you in Orleans ?
It’s funny cuz yesterday I was doin a PM and I found an old Traulsen unit and it had a R12 charge. I get a kick out of that kinda stuff. I love what we do, not always tho! 👍🏼 Are you in Kanata ?
you quote is about 4 digit, they will buy chinese made box and when this just past warranty will turn to problematic
Find a lot of those old Hobart units still hanging in there around here. Hobart makes some good stuff.
Good Vid. that looked like a single door stand up. those are so cheap these days. only like a little over $1,000.00 off the net. But, it il only last 5 years before needing work or replaced.
Good find on leak, smart to replace/box. But, new one will develop leaks within first 5) years. GJ Service area Barrhaven??
I have question is it smart to just cut the condensate loop so I don’t have that problem again and let drain by gravity?
They would need a new EVAP and compressor probably next year.
They don't make them like they use to 👍
