Why do we even add chlorine to swimming pools? It's very cheap, it's extremely powerful and it's effective. It's the most popular sanitizer on the market. It kills viruses, it kills bacteria almost instantly. Chlorine is pretty awesome now how much chlorine do you need to add to your swimming pool? General rule of thumb is to stay between 1 & 3 parts per million of chlorine in your swimming pool.

At all times now, staying in range is difficult, so you should definitely test your water on a regular basis. Every single week you can use test strips or a liquid test kit, or you can bring it into your local pool store and have them check it. For you now, how do you choose the right chlorine for your pool? Every single pool is different, but there's really only two types of chlorine. There is chlorine tablets and there is granular chlorine or powder chlorine.

We recommend that you use chlorine tablets, they come in two different sizes. They come in three inch and one inch sizes. We prefer the three in sizes, because they're easier to handle and depending on where you live, they might actually be cheaper than the smaller one. Inch versions and the brand doesn't really matter you can use any brand new one as long as the active ingredient is dry, cl' or if you don't want to use chlorine tablets, and you just want to use the powdered version, you have to actually add that to Your swimming pool water, it's a lot of work, but if you're up for the challenge go for it now, if you're adding chlorine tablets, there are three ways to do that.

The first way is using a floating chlorine dispenser or a chlorine floating. This is something that floats around your pool, and you add chlorine pucks to it. You can add a few, it just sort of floats and slowly dissolves the chlorine. The problem with this method is that sometimes this floating dispenser can get stuck behind ladders and in your steps, and it can rub up against your vinyl liner, which can bleach it.

So we really don't recommend this version, but it's certainly something to consider a better option. Would be to add the chlorine pucks directly to your skimmer basket. Water is constantly moving over your skimmer basket as long as your pump and filter are running, and that is dissolving the chlorine much faster and it's taking that chlorine through your filter system and pushing it out through the returned Jets, fully dispersing it through your entire pool. Why the best way to add Corinne to your pool is to use an automatic chlorinator which is installed in your filter system, which fully dispenses it in your pool water and really helps chlorinate.

Your pool well - and this is the way that we recommend you add chlorine tablets to your swimming pool. But if you don't have an automatic chlorinator, adding it to your pool, skimmer is just fine. So that's it thanks for watching and happy swimming.

“I guess it’s possible to cause damage”. Referring to your recommendation to put tablets in skimmers. Seriously! Get off you tube. You are a hack that will cost people!! I guess YouTube let’s any uneducated person on there site. Pool owners be ware. Not in skimmers.

Tablets are expensive. what about liquid chlorine?

People who love for you to add tablets to your skimmer: 1. People who replace pool equipment (like me). 2. People who replace skimmers.

Hello! Does adding pucks in your skimmer damage the plastic in the long run by drying it and making it more brittle and also possibly damage your pump & water heater?
    Thank you

  5. Avataaar/Circle Created with python_avatars Stan says:

I’ve been told to “never, ever ever” add chlorine tablets to the skimmer basket as they very much can damage the pipes. Apparently the chlorine is much too strong administered in that way and can damage piping. Sooo…I just bought a float (was told on a few occasions that it is fine. Effective). Was potential pipe damage considered before making this video?

I was told adding pucks to you skimmer can damage your pool equipment and there is even a warning not to on the container

    It’s very cheap. 🤣

    2021 disagrees with you.

  11. Avataaar/Circle Created with python_avatars Anthony Andrews says:

Brands do matter. Cheap pucks are cut with guns and glues that ruin your filter system. Don't ever get in the habit of putting them in your skimmer either. Chlorine is a corrosive, and you'll have to replace your entire skimmer way sooner than expected if you do this

it's not bad to put in your skimmer?

What about the build up of Cyanuric acid? We just bought a house with a pool (our first) and the previous owners only used chlorine tabs and the Cyanuric acid levels are so high that we are going to have to drain the pool halfway then start over. It's enough to make us consider a salt water conversion…just for the ease of maintenance. And yes, I know a salt water pool is just a chlorine pool…I've been watching your videos. Thanks

  16. Avataaar/Circle Created with python_avatars Morteza Dehghani says:

Some pool professionals believe that placing tablets in the skimmer basket damages the filter. It causes accumulation of dissolved chlorine in the filter and may lead to excessive pressure build-up and eventually failure of filter tank. What do you think?

  17. Avataaar/Circle Created with python_avatars Josh Chandler says:

We just bought a 12X30 intex metal frame pool and I threw half a chlorine puck directly in the pool, it is currently sitting at the bottom of our pool. Is this bad? And should I take it out??

I have a Hayward CL100 chlorinator and when I set it to off it still pumps chlorine out. Has anyone else had this problem before?

  19. Avataaar/Circle Created with python_avatars soulseeker says:

what if I have a vinyl liner? I heard if you put the tabs in the skimmer it will mess up the liner in front of the skimmer. I was told the chlorine tabs "gas" sending it out the front of your skimmer, down the wall, therefore damaging your liner. is that true?

  20. Avataaar/Circle Created with python_avatars Sara says:

  25. Avataaar/Circle Created with python_avatars Chris B says:

I understand the point of view that leaving pucks in a skimmer creates ‘highly concentrated chlorinated water’. But the pucks are designed to intentionally dissolve slowly. Pucks in a float I have used literally take days to dissolve to the point I wonder if they are any good initially. A single puck placed in my skimmer basket takes roughly 48 hours to dissolve with the pump on. So how can anyone say that putting a puck in a skimmer with the pump off causes a damaging high concentration of chlorine? This is something I have always got conflicting information on, Service area Nepean??

  26. Avataaar/Circle Created with python_avatars Flower 🌸 says:

But how many tablets per pool size

  27. Avataaar/Circle Created with python_avatars Ronny C says:

Putting tablets in the skimmer basket isn't a good idea unless you have a white gunite pool and no heater, IMHO. If the pump or skimmer turns off the chlorine will keep dissolving and seep out the skimmer and bleach the wall under it, and it's not good for chlorine to constantly go though your heater.

  28. Avataaar/Circle Created with python_avatars Noe Zamora says:

What do you recommend for a 8 foot outside pool, my brother got one that doesn’t come with a pump, and I can find a pump anywhere.

  29. Avataaar/Circle Created with python_avatars Amanda Sanderson says:

Would using a chlorine floater be the best option for an intex easy set pool? How long do you leave the floater in the water? Thanks! Are you in Kanata ?

  30. Avataaar/Circle Created with python_avatars oldkid6 says:

    What about concentrated liquid chlorine?

  31. Avataaar/Circle Created with python_avatars Brian Landers says:

If I add tablets to skimmer and run my filter on a schedule of 2 hours on 4 hours off (total of 8 hours per day) Will this create some highly chlorinated, highly corrosive water that can damage my equipment if left unattended. I plan on purchasing an Automatic Chlorinator, but might not be until next season. Are you in Barrhaven ?

  33. Avataaar/Circle Created with python_avatars Thomas Garrett says:

Adding chlorine tablets to the skimmer is a real no no

  34. Avataaar/Circle Created with python_avatars WOG TOWN says:

Can you still swim with tables in your pool?

  35. Avataaar/Circle Created with python_avatars Just1American1966 says:

I add pucks to a floater, and my above-ground pool is equipped with an over-the-wall skimmer. When the pump is running, the floater tends to hug the skimmer, allowing a higher concentration of chlorine in the water that enters the intake. When the pumps shuts off, the floater drifts away.

I feel this gives me two methods, the floater, and the skimmer.

I'm now experimenting with a second, weighted dispenser suspended from a float so that it releases chlorine closer to the pool floor instead of up top in direct sunlight.

  36. Avataaar/Circle Created with python_avatars Fabien S says:

Hi there , in asia most of the pool are overflow and not skimmer. Therefore we have an overflow tank with 2000 to 4000 liters inside. Would that be ok to just drop the chlorine tablet inside this tank ? Service area Orleans??

  38. Avataaar/Circle Created with python_avatars Larry McMillan Jr. says:

Where do you put the chlorine tablet if using an automatic chlorinator that's installed in the filter system that came with the pool? The pool is filled with water. The filter system is plugged in and working. These kids are driving me bananas because they are ready to get in but I won't let them until I get this chlorine part figured out! This is my first time buying a pool….

  42. Avataaar/Circle Created with python_avatars Adam Rabinowitz says:

I read adding to your skimmer is not good if your pump cycles on and off. The time it is off a high concentrate of chlorine pools in the skimmer. Upon turning it on and blasts through the system. Also what about liquid chlorine ? I've gone from tablets which caused stabilizer issues. To granular which caused hard water to now just liquid chlorine. Thanks
