Hey everyone welcome to swimuniversity.com. My name is matt javanese and today i'm going to show you how to operate a multi-port valve on your sand filter today, we're working with a pentair sand, filter and the multi-port valve. So on this multi-port valve there are seven different positions in which you can put it in now. I just want to note that every time you turn the handle on your multi-port valve, you want to make sure that your pump system is completely shut off.

I like to think of it like a car with a clutch, so every time you switch gears, you need to push the clutch in which, in this case, pushing the clutch in would mean shutting off your entire system, moving the handle and then flipping it back on. It's that simple, it's something you should do and the reason why we do. That is because, if there's water running through the filter system - and you move this, there's a chance that the o-ring or the uh, the five-spoke gasket inside the multi-port valve - can shift out of place or even get damaged, which will cause water to flow out. Your back wash port or your waste port, while you're running your regular filter system, which is something that you don't want happening because you can waste a lot of water.

The first position and the most important position we're going to talk about is the filter position. This is the position that you'll use the most water from your pool, travels into the multi-port valve and pushes down through the sand bed where it filters when it reaches the bottom. It travels into the laterals up through the center standpipe and back into your swimming pool. The second position on your multi-port valve that we're going to talk about is the backwash position.

The backwash position directs water from your pool into the multi-port valve down through the standpipe and up through the sand, taking all the dirt and pushing it out the backwash port. Remember always use a backwash hose after you backwash your pool. It's good practice to go into the rinse mode, which is the third position on your multi-port valve that we're going to talk about the rinse position. Resets the sand bed by working the same way as the filter position, but this time allowing the water to flow out of the back wash port rather than back into your pool.

The fourth position that i want to talk about is the waste position. The waist position takes the water from your pool and sends it directly to your backwash port, where it never enters the filter. This is used to quickly remove water from your pool or, if you're vacuuming, and have a lot of dirt, that your filter wouldn't be able to handle. The fifth position we're going to talk about is the recirculate position, which you won't use that often, but it's good to know about recirculate, takes the water from your pool and sends it right back never entering the filter.

This is used to circulate the water. Some chemicals suggest using this position rather than using the filter position and finally, there is usually six positions, but this particular multi-port valve has seven and we'll talk about both of them, which is the closed position and the winterization position. Uh. The closed position actually closes off.
All of the uh imports and outports in your multi-port valve just completely shuts them off, which you will probably never use or very very rarely. The other position is called winterize or winterization, which essentially closes it off, but it keeps all the valves open. So it allows condensation that builds up inside the tank to evaporate during the winter months. Now, that's it! That's all you need to know in order to operate your multi-port valve on your sand filter and now you know exactly how your sand filter filters, the water you can visit our website, which is swimuniversity.com and thanks for watching you.

Above ground pool owner here, closed is used all the time when I clean out my pump filter basket. It's a lot easier than putting a plug in my return jet. We have positive pressure at the pump, not negative.

At my Starpool Midas multiport water are slowly leaking out through the waste line. The operating handle can be moved up and down without resistance. Only when pushing it down the spring load can be felt. When taking the top of the spring and handle works as intended. Would you know what is wrong? Thanks 🙂 Are you in Kanata ?

I have a nylon gasket that sits under the handle that started to warp on my unit. It looks like it was molded into a bowl shape.

Your videos and handbook (which my husband and I are now reading together) should come mandatory with every pool. We bought a house with a pool and its overwhelming all the info. Now we finally are feeling confident and excited! Thank you!

I really appreciate you doing this video. I’ve been struggling with trying to maintain the pool clean being that I am waiting for a new sand filter assembly that I, myself took apart. Rather than to have the water sit till I wait for the new filter assembly can I use the pool in recirculate mode with no side mounted sand filter attached? Can I still vacuum to waste to clean all of the debris on the bottom of the pool?

Which is correct for running in water vacuum, connecting inside the skimmer or on a return port with a vacuum attached port. This pool has a vacuum port they moved from shallow to deep end. Its 20×40 and 8ft deep. Ive seen 4 different videos and they say do it one way or the other. Its a gunite pool with a vinyl liner inground. Hayword sand filter. So connect to the vacuum/return water port or directly inside the skimmer for leave in vacuum? Which is better for waste removal vacuuming?
    Thanks so much
