On this episode, we're talking about protecting your above ground pool cover from the windy winter weather triple w score, got a question from beth and she asked. Is it okay to leave your above ground pool uncovered during the winter? We live in a windy area and the covers end up like parachutes, i'm afraid of damaging the pool. I've tried clips. I've tried wraps, nothing seems to keep the cover down.

Well, thank you, beth for your question and first off. No, you should always cover your pool in the winter if you're not going to swim in it. The cover protects the pool from the elements, whether that's a cover, you'd be constantly skimming and vacuuming the pool all winter long. And of course you don't want to do that, because it's like freezing out and plus you might not even be able to do it because it's so cold.

So here are a few simple things you can do to protect your above ground pool cover from the winter weather. Damage number one make sure your winter cover is secure with a cable and a winch, not a winch. You don't want to wench securing your above ground pool cover that would be weird, keep it wrapped under the rails and make sure it's nice and tight number two use cover clips. I know you said you tried using cover clips and they didn't work, but it doesn't mean you'd, stop using them, they're cheap and they add that extra layer of security and the more you have the better, so good and finally and here's the kicker - add about one To three inches of water on top of the cover, this will help protect the from the wind damage that you talked about.

Uh. You should keep an eye on the water level and you don't want to get too high, so make sure you invest in a winter cover, pool pump or a sump pump to remove any of the excess water bonus tip speaking of above ground pool covers. You should get an air pillow, despite what you might think, it's used for it's actually an ice compensator. So when your pool water freezes during the winter - and it will, if you live in a very cold area, the ice expands and the pillow under the cover absorbs the expansion and protects your walls of your pool from damage and trust me.

This is an absolute must-have for very, very cold weather places. Also, if you want more information about pool and hot tub care, go to swimuniversity.com thanks for watching and happy swimming, you.

Put a little water on the cover to hold it down. My opinion

How about those of us with the Intex frame pools? (Liner on frame, no sidewalls) They are round frame and don't have a cap edge so you can't use cables and winches or clips. The cover for it is "held" down with thin nylon rope that has pulled through the eyeholes due to the water/snow weight and wind. I have a square pool that has been discontinued and so have the covers so I have to use the one it came with. I have some Jerry-rig ideas in mind but I'd like to hear your thoughts.

Our problem here is the wind. We buy a new cover every year and it’s not a happy thing. I wish we could find that cover or system that stays put and doesn’t shred. We use the pillow, clips and the wench n cable system. Love our pool hate the winter.

Does not work. Any and all of this together including using shrink wrap at the same time.

Here's a question that so far, no one has addressed! Unlike almost all videos, we have a 18×33 AGP. We have a good winter cover & pump but the water never seems to drain towards the pump since the pool is so long. If the pump is in the middle, the ends collect all the water, etc. Is there a good way to get the water to drain toward the pump or should I just not worry until the water level gets so high it reaches back to the pump??? Right now I go out and keep moving the pump around. Thanks so much!

HI Matt, you asked for comments on the video.  I liked it, but I do have an in-ground pool and would love to see your comments on that, especially on something like this.  Although I have lots of friends and family use the pool in the summer, they disappear when it's time to open or close the dark thing.  It's not easy with just me and my wife tries, but she gives up easily.  Is there any easy way to get that stupid cover on with just one person and what are some tricks for doing so?  How's that for a challenge?  Keep up the good work.George Are you in Orleans ?
