Here's how to winterize a pool: Sand filter with a multi-port valve. Number One: You want to backwash your filter after 1 to two minutes, or when the water runs clear, turn your multi-port valve to rinse. Number two: You're going to rinse that filter, move the valve to the rinse position, and let it run for 30 seconds. Number Three: Set it to winterize, Move the valve to the winterized setting.

This lets water drain from the valve Number four, drain the water from the tank, unscrew, and remove the drain cap at the bottom of the filter.
