Hey guys joshua griffin here serving the middle peninsula and the northern neck of virginia, and i want to do a quick video kind of going through. This is a my second video in a series that we're going to call brand overviews.
If you want to call it that i already did a video on the ingersoll rand, uh lineup, train america standard all that good stuff, and so next in line i'm going to do uh one on the carrier, lineup and kind of an overview. If you're, comparing two different uh companies, one's trying to sell you say a carrier and the other one's trying to sell you say a bryant uh, which is a carrier brand. You know what what are we talking about here? You know so uh. Hopefully i can simplify it a little bit for you and maybe make you or help you in your decision making.
So a couple things i'm gon na break this down and i'm actually i don't know how they break it down, at least if they were to sit down and make a video like this. But in my brain i'm gon na break it down into two separate uh entities. If you will and and - and i think you'll see why, in a second so just to back up a little bit carrier they've got a long history. Obviously uh willis carrier was the uh.
You know the father of today's air conditioning or whatever you want to call it and so they've. You know morphed into all these different entities over the years and recently united technologies. The company that actually owned carrier according to the internet says that they actually branched off and carrier became its own entity. So i don't really know what that means.
I don't know if that means you know they sold it to someone and now they're their own entity, or maybe they broke it up like that, so that they could sell it. I mean who knows but real quick before i get to the two breakdowns, my personal and again, if you're watching this, you know you there might be a carrier dealer watching this, for example, and their experience might be a little different. I i don't know, that's fine. Please feel free to leave a comment and we can chat about it if you want, but my my feeling with carrier is they're, not real nichey.
You know, and what i mean by that is: there's there's brands out there. There's heating and air brands out there that are niche. You know they're they they've said this is what we're gon na do we're gon na be the best at this particular niche and that's what we're gon na be. You know we're not gon na try to be more than that or different than that, and so with carrier.
I get the the opposite feeling to that and what i mean by that is they offer so much different brands or or products if you will and they put their name on it and you might say well, that's that sounds good. Why doesn't everybody do that? Well, here's the thing they're not really doing it, what they're doing they're not actually making these products in a lot of cases, i've seen with their ductless systems i and again, if you're, watching this and you're like well, not anymore. That's not true anymore, i'm just speaking from my personal experience with them. They don't even make or did not make their duckless uh units during the making of this video that may have made change. That may have changed. I don't know, but for the longest time they were just a rebranded other product, okay, so uh and that's actually changed over the years. Who the you know the the manufacturing company for that. So when you're talking about say uh, you know so, for example, at griffin air, when i sell someone a heating and air system uh an extra add-on, an upgrade if you will might be a whole house home filter, some brands, don't make whole house home filters right.
So you know you sell them a heating and air system, and it's this brand and then you sell them. Uh, say an april layer, whole house home filter to go with that, because this brand doesn't make whole house home filters right and so with carrier. I feel like they try to put an umbrella over all of that. So if you need a whole house home filter, they may not even actually make the filters they're gon na slap, their name on whatever product they're selling and then offer that so that has pros and cons uh.
You know it's kind of up to you on whether or not you think that makes sense for you, but you know that's just something to think about, so they they they kind of, have they're, not a nichey that you know type of brand. They kind of umbrella. All of that, and because of that uh, just like with say, like cars, i've used this analogy before with cars. You know you might have four different manufacturers making hundreds of brands right so like gm, they make gmc, but they also make chevrolet and hummer, and all these other different brands.
Well, heating and air is the same way and carrier uh through the years they have. They encompass more brands than a lot of their competitors. I would say, and so again that i'm not saying that's good or bad, i'm just saying it because it's true so, according to their website uh, they encompass all these different brands and again i'm gon na break. It down into two separate uh entities, the first side in residential that i would say, is they they have the carrier, the carrier, bryant and payne lines.
Okay, so that would be one side and then the other side would be the icp brands brands like arco, air comfort, maker heil, all those. So if, let's just stick with the the first entity first, if you will so like, if i go to my local carrier, supplier they're, going to sell carrier products, bryant products and a lot of times, pain products and to break that down for you carry now. This is what we're told, i'm regurgitating what i've been told. You might say, oh that you know that's, that's not what i've been told you know or whatever, but carrier and bryant are equivalent to one another okay, so you could actually install parts from one or the other and it would fit the same stuff. Okay. So if you go to their websites, they are actually identical, maybe different colors but identical. They both have the same seer ratings, going all the way up over 20 seer. I think they have an air conditioner, that's 24 seer and they're they're equivalent.
I mean they're they're very similar to one another and in fact uh in talking to my local carrier supplier in a lot of cases, they'll say: well, hey, you know we're not going to let you sell carry your brand because you got to work your way up To that you got to have certain amount of business that you're giving us before. We'll even give you that option to sell that brand right, but we'll let you sell the equivalent, which is bryant, we'll let you sell bryant products and let's get you signed up as a bryant dealer and you know so that's been my experience. That's what they've approached me with before and so again, that's i'm not saying good or bad. I'm just stating the facts so uh.
So you got carrie and bryant and then you also have pain which is their. I would call it their builder grade. Brand pain doesn't make, but so high of a seer. I don't even know what that is.
Let me go here and look real, quick, so yeah, so they only make up to 16 seer for the pain line. It looks like pairing it with, depending on what you pair it with you, can maybe get up over 17 seer, but for their heat pumps they just have their two stage 16s here. So there's nothing over, say: 20 seer, it's their their builder grade brand. Now, i'm not saying that that makes paying a bad brand.
I'm just saying that you, when you're, comparing apples to apples, that's what you're. Looking at okay, it's a lot of times the same technology. In fact, i've even installed pain, equipment and you know, ordered the system ordered the outdoor unit and the air handler coming come. You know the air handler has carrier written on the box, so it's you know very similar equipment if not the same equipment.
So that is one side: that's the carrier. Bryant payne entity, if you will kind of all in one there are the equivalent and and all work together and then carrier also has encompassed over the years, the icp brands and so icp you're. Talking about, let's see, according to their website, i'm just going to rattle off some of the brands if you're, comparing them. Airquest arco, air comfort maker day and night heil keep right and temp star and we've actually installed some of the temp star units uh years ago.
And so, if, if we're talking about those two separate entities, i don't i'm not going to say that one's better than the other. But it appears that carrier kind of has made carrier and bryant but carrier their premium line and then icps over here kind of capturing. All this other market share, but maybe not as high a seer, for example, so like if you go to one of their websites here, the uh, the the highest option for heat pumps for seer ratings is up to 18 seer. Now, depending on how you ma payer that you might get up to 19 seer for your ahri uh seer rating. But what's the point in all this? Well, so i would say so so when you're comparing the two entities, they're owned by the same parent company. But i don't know that they're necessarily the equivalent the units, don't even look the same. They you there. There was a time where some of them looked the same or similar, but now, if like, if you buy a temp star heat pump, it doesn't look like a carrier.
Heat pump um, that's a game uh that my wife and i play sometimes is you know, we'll go, buy a house and i'll be like what brand is that you know because they all have their own look, and you know just kind of like some people are With cars, you know that, oh that looks like a a 1978 model because the headlights are round or whatever. So, oh, that's something that we'll do that's kind of goofy and so the icp and the carrier entities they. Don't they don't look the same. So if you have somebody, that's say: try you know you got two contractors and they're trying to sell.
You say a temp star and one's trying to sell you a day and night they're the same they're, a part of that icp entity uh. You know they're relatively the same products and if you have someone trying to sell you a carrier and someone trying to sell you a bryant they're relatively this, the same products. So i don't know if that helps at all. So i found not cheap solution with next week delivery: airquest HVA9+ airquest G80CTL + airquest END4X. this all devices controlled by Ion™ System Control and can i use my ecobee 4 instead of this Ion™ System Control? second questions: how much wires i should to use for thermostat connections(8 or 10 or 12)?

Great video again! When you say"They have a decent reputation" towards ICP brands do you mean the they're inferior quality compared to Carrier, Bryant and Pyne? I just got quote from a contractor for a Arcoair and a Tempstar(80% furnace in Big Bear CA $4200)…I'm not too sure about there decent reputation. I also got a quote for %6500 for a Lennex. I'm not sure what to do.
Hi. I am in San Jose, California, planning to replace my old AC, the contractor offers me a Payne 4 tons, 14 seer for my 2150 sqft house. Is Payne is good enough as Bryant or Goodman? If i want a 16 seer Payne it costs $1000 more, should I go with it?
I have a Heil and it is a piece of junk. I've had it for 7 years and it's been worked on 3 times. Over 1000 in labor cost.

I have trane unit that sweating a lot and is in the end of its lifetime. Today HVAC guy gave me a quote to replace my unit with temp star. Never heard about them and but from the price point it’s good in my area. My question is TEMPSTAR a good unit?

Icp brands for guys who don’t do enough business to be a carrier, Bryant dealer . You have to have the sales and training to get a major brand. Small companies sell less know brands. Cheaper market. Sell something with name recognition. Sell yourself

Hi Josh, Great video, but I'm confused about Payne. You put them on the same side as Carrier & Bryant, but then mentioned they are like a "builders grade". Then you said a Payne air handler had "Carrier" written on the box. I live in the hot SF valley in CA (last week it was 108 degrees) and am looking at replacing my 18 year old fried (compressor wires melted, unit is grounded) Goodman 4 ton condenser, coil and furnace. I was quoted $9K for a 4 ton single stage 14 SEER Payne condenser, 80K BTU 80% furnace and 4 ton coil, 3 undersized ducts replaced, remaining 5 ducts kept intact, and air intake enlarged. He also offered a 16 SEER single-stage Bryant for $2K more ($11K total). I had 5 quotes so far, and although he is not lowest, he is the only one offering to fix the 3 ducts and intake. But $11K is more than double what I paid for my brand new fresh install 18 years ago, which included all electrical and ducts – EVERYTHING. So 3 questions – (1) Is the Payne the same as a Carrier & Bryant 14 SEER, or is it different, and if so, how – cheaper parts, different design? (2) Should I pay $2K more for the 16 SEER single stage Bryant? (3) Am I getting ripped off right now (quotes have ranged from $7,500 – $13,500 – all generic brands) and should I just sweat the summer out and wait until fall to get a better price? Thanks for any advice.

Yeah, Carrier has a good reputation in terms of hvac units in America but their split & other products in Asia are the worst. Carrier doesn't maintain their quality in Asia.
I'm at crossroads carrier vs Armstrong mid range ac and furnace combo. Which one would you pick carrier more expensive but able to finance, Armstrong cheaper but a cash deal.

I like to ask you a question about the size and the HVAC unit we just had installed last year. It's a four ton, SEER 14 with heat pump Tempstar. The house size is 1,920 sq ft. with 1600 to 1800 sq. ft. of total indoor space available for cooling and 12 vent register. I'm thinking about adding another one to the back room for additional 200 sq ft. that would make it a total of 1800 instead of 1600 sq. ft. I lives in Florida and it's hot where I lives. It's an old house built in the 60s. Is this unit big enough?
Bryant is not a brand of carrier. They are both brands of United technologies and have been for years
until this country keeps buying mickey mouse products from china that last 2 years. china going to keep laughing at us and frank down the street is going to tell everyone he bought a central air for his house for $500. yeah frank, it's thrown together in some low end no quality Chinese factory, that make 10,000 of these fire traps a day. china hates us everyone. IF A PRODUCT IS A JOKE TAKE IT BACK, TELL HOME DEPOT TO SEND IT BACK TO CHINA.
what's more important. quality, warranty, Chinese low end garbage parts last 2 years, anything, computer board, power surge will it be covered for 6, 7 years. carrier tempstar 5-8 years and it's ready for the scrap yard. then you'll be slashing the repairman's , if their any good, tires because the only parts that have a warranty are a $5 hose, junk parts. then he says I would have never bought that lemon. we have a 1,800 sq.ft townhouse. 2 floors and a basement. he would install a 2 1/2 ton tempstar for $6,00 including tax.

Got a quote for a new furnace and A/C unit. Guy only sells Comfortmaker. Says 10yr warranty. Never heard of them but I know one of the big 3 own them. Seems they have mixed reviews on you tube..Thoughts on those. $5500 for both installed. Current ones are Trane. 24yrs old. But AC is on its last leg. It is a ton short if what it should be for our house so we want to upgrade to a 2.5 ton..seems a cheap price in our market but the guy does this on the side part time. Old hvac tech semi retired. Need to get 10yrs and we will have moved..

Well , I got the fan to run and the compressor to come on and I got a question, there are 3 wires blue red and yellow , the blue and red come off the cap and the yellow from a plug I believe the yellow comes from the thermostat and the blue and red are 110 right ?? I got this unit and if it works it works I’m not gonna hold anything you say I’m just looking for a hint or ANYTHING that may lead me to succeed

I have 2 quotes a Goodman or a carrier performance series. Both 3 ton 16 seers. Price is a few hundred dollars difference. Leaning carrier as it has a sound blanket and hi low pressure switch ( don’t know if this means much, selling tactic ) . Thoughts ? California.

you were saying about the ICP brands, tempstar, etc. are these the budget units. parts are low end, what brand of compressors are put in them. you mentioned carrier premium, high quality parts? on average how long will a tempstar last. we have a 25 year old town house, 2 floors, 1,800 sq.sq ft and a basement. our hvac quoted us $6,000 for everything, incl. heat unit, we have natural gas. including tax. My Bryant heat pump & gas furnace seem to behave differently than my Rheem did. I wonder if this is a problem waiting to happen. This morning (at 35 degrees outdoors) I upped my thermostat from 64 to 69 degrees. The heat pump and furnace fan came on and ran for just a couple of minutes. Then the call for 5 degrees of heat all at once kicked on the Aux gas heat and seems to makes sense. I heard the gas burner fire up and the vent pipe got hot. The problem is that I could hear my heat pump was still running. I have always thought that a heat pump & gas furnace should never run at the same time. I guess it could be that the HP is possibly running in a different mode, such as defrost or possibly in some way that would not be harmful, but I don't know. So I shut it down. I don’t know how to confirm if this is a situation that might cause damage or not. I don’t know if the heat pump is supposed to ‘run on’ in some otherwise safe mode temporarily. I am afraid that if I let it run on just to see if it eventually shuts down I might do damage in the meantime. I would feel better if I knew that the HP is supposed to behave like this under these conditions.
Could you give me your opinion on the temp star we are looking at replacing our 23 year old system with a temp star package unit we where told it’s 4 ton 14 seer electric heat and air are they good units or should we ask our ac guy for a different option he gave a price of 5500 installed is it worth it ? I own a Coleman two and a half ton electric heat inside it has been great 28 years old so I'm thinking I will go to a 14 seer to keep it simple that has less components to go bad thinking that Carrier and Bryant sell higher seer units for government approval for energy efficiency ratings.
I've been quoted 3200 out the door for a payne 96% with ecm blower. Is that a deal or a low end machine? I just want to never worry about my furnace again once I spend the money.

Good video👍 Carrier for a long time was #1 for sales, but in 1990’s Goodman was catching up to Carrier and when Goodman purchased the Amana line from Raytheon that was when soon after Carrier purchased the ICP line, if they didn’t do this purchase Goodman would of took the lead. So for awhile Carrier was still top dog until Daiken purchased Goodman. Now Daiken is #1 in Air Conditioning Global. The only way I see that Carrier is going to take #1 spot is purchasing Gree or possibly Samsung, their partnership with Toshiba is not going to advance them to #1 Are you in Barrhaven ?
