Ah, it's time to chill out and get ready for a mediocre Q a live stream. If you're old enough, grab yourself your favorite adult beverage and if you're not, stick with apple juice, put your feet up and relax. If you have any questions, feel free to ask them in the chat. and now let's cue up the intro music.
All right. Thank you! Okay, thank you. Foreign foreign hello I need like a smoother transition from the intro music I'm also working on new intro music I'm like trying to figure out what I want to do I have way too much stuff going on. If you guys who have been watching me for long enough, you may already know that I always have way too much going on and I'm overloaded with stuff.
it's not. It's like just the emails and the conversations. like. there's some things that I really can't talk about yet because you know I'm I'm always in talks with like certain people that want to like work on video projects and different things and a lot of times nothing comes from those talks.
but you I really am not supposed to like discuss them, you know? So it's just always fun. but these are definitely good problems to have. and also you know I Am My Own Worst Enemy I'm the one that always gets in way over my head digging into things and doing all sorts of stuff and so it's it's all on me, you know, but at the same time like what I've learned to realize is that I am not in a rush like of course with work, you know I have to to get to jobs and do tasks and stuff. but like for instance, my home project right I'm changing the air conditioner on my house I have no reason to rush through that like I really don't? The only reason I have to rush is like because I just kind of want to get most of the work done before the dead of Summer which I'm on Pace to get it done So um, but yeah, you know, like I'm just kind of going with the flow like you know I'm not gonna rush through this and I'm just gonna kind of do things the way that I wanted to because I'm a nut job and I obsess about the craziest little details.
So right now, uh, I purchase new equipment for my house for those of you that don't know. First off, let's start this off right. Okay, my name is Chris I'm an Hvacr service technician here in Southern California and I make videos on YouTube to try to help out. You know the industry.
They're really for my own employees, but obviously I realize people get benefit from them. So I do these live streams as a way to consolidate questions and answer them in a live format. So uh, people may be watching this on Facebook on LinkedIn uh or on YouTube I will say Facebook and Linkedin are great. You know I can see your guys's questions but on Facebook LinkedIn which you guys can't see is you can't see the entire chat going on in YouTube there's usually a couple hundred people on YouTube and they're in the chat room and they're going back and forth asking questions.
I'm totally fine if you guys watch it on LinkedIn or Facebook I'm just telling you that majority of the time I'm interacting with the chat. you guys are probably not going to understand unless I You know, say it out loud or whatever, but it's all good. Either way. Okay, if you guys do have questions that you want me to address, please put them in caps lock. It helps me to see them. Oftentimes there's a bunch of questions that I don't get to feel free to send me an email to Hvacrvideos Gmail.com if I fail to answer your question, you can keep asking your question in the chat because oftentimes like it'll get lost as the chat's scrolling up so just keep asking it and tell myself or one of the moderators tells you to stop or just send me an email and I'll try to get to it on the next stream. Okay so anyways, now that I did the intro and all that good stuff. So back to my home project.
So as usual I'm like in Head Over Heels Like way too many projects going on and um, decided to change the air conditioner in my home. made a couple videos about it. uh, measuring the the air leakage in my house and all this different stuff. So I've been just like thinking and thinking and thinking and uh I asked a question in the chat before the stream started and I'm curious the people that are watching right now.
so in the chat, do me a favor and put a or answer the question. what brand equipment or even what type of equipment do you think I chose for my house Okay now I'm not going to reveal the name of the equipment right, but I'm going to give a little hint. and for those that are Savvy you'll probably be able to guess what equipment I chose just from what I'm about to show. but you know.
and there's also little Easter eggs all over the place. like there's an Easter egg in my office right now behind me. You may or may not understand what it is, it's there. I'm not going to tell you where it's at, but um I'm curious if you know what the chat thinks about what type of equipment I chose.
So I'm looking through here. There's lots of interesting answers, very interesting answers. Yeah, very very interesting. I'm not going to say what it is, but I'm I'm curious.
Okay, so I'm going to show you guys a picture real quick and uh, it's just a little hint, right? Only some people are going to understand what brand equipment this is and this isn't a really big hand. like you're gonna have to be a true installer of this equipment to understand what it is. So here's my little hint. There's not a lot there, but maybe you can figure it out.
Maybe you know what kind of boxes this particular manufacturer uses. Maybe you know what their boxes look like? There's my equipment. So I finally chose it and uh, I'm starting the process of selecting everything else. so you know I don't know.
Uh what? Um now I got to figure out the uh power monitoring right? because I got to get a surge protector power monitor. Um I have one in mind one of the ICM ones so we'll see and then also need to figure out my line hide. So I'm going to run an entirely new line set and I was thinking about using one of those plastic composite material line hides I don't want to use the metal ones so um, we'll see, you know. I I'm looking for ideas If you guys have ideas on what type of line hides you guys like to use and stuff you know I'd be kind of curious. so lots of great. Lots of great comments in the chat and guesses on what brand equipment I chose so and some people might might know what what it is. Just buy the boxes, you know again. I I'm being a little a little secretive there, but I mean some people probably get the idea what type of equipment I chose so you know, who knows, Right on? All right.
So let's get to the stream. Got lots of questions that I want to cover from comments and emails and different things. and of course I want to get to your guys's questions too. So again, feel free to put your question questions in caps lock.
It'll help me to kind of get to them. So let's work through here right now. Um oh my gosh, you guys are hilarious in the chat. Some of these comments are just funny.
So I you know this is the really, really neat. um yeah, exactly. Jason Johnson he says he doesn't know residential so it's darts in the dark. exactly same thing I I wouldn't be able to recognize what equipment this is from I'm looking at it on the monitor right here that you guys can't see anymore.
but I wouldn't know what brand it is from those boxes. but people that install it, they probably know what brand it is. So I will say that I appreciate it. Actually came on a palette because a lot of my commercial equipment comes on these cardboard palettes that aren't even real palettes.
So um, crew 13 says definitely Mr cool you know I genuinely thought about I didn't know if like I thought I knew it would be hilarious if I installed like a totally DIY home mini split system in my house with like the mechanical connections and everything. Wouldn't that be like the best video ever? Like to Total troll where I go through all these processes of doing the home performance testing and the airflow testing and air leakage testing. and then when it comes to the final install, I install these pre-charge line sets and I get the long ones right? So I have an extra 30 feet left over and I just coil it up on the outside like that would have been hilarious for the video on my house. like but I just couldn't do it I couldn't do it but that would have been funny.
So um yeah, leave the Mr Cool line set loop outside. That would have been awesome for sure. Uh, all right reading through the chat right now. Lots of great people in here.
Yeah, it's really cool. Lots of cool people. um lots of normal people my buddy. Ben Poole in here from HVAC Tactical, What is up my friend? how's it going? Ben haven't heard from you in a bit man. I mean obviously see you on social media here and there, but we gotta connect talk a little bit. Um, we definitely need to have you on the overtime show too. Ben So we're gonna set that up at some point. So all right.
Um, so I have been having a good amount of computer problems lately, so I apologize for the editing mistakes that you all have been noticing in the videos like it's just. you know. this is the thing one doesn't understand you. You set out to make videos right? I set out to make videos for my employees.
It turned into a public thing. It turned into this: Channel and then I decided I wanted to start making 4K videos right? That was one of the like. Honestly, probably one of the most ridiculous decisions I ever made on this channel was to edit videos in 4k and upload 4K It has cost me so much money and I've I've really contemplating turning them back down to 1080 right? I've really thought about it because the amount of storage and computer space and computer power I'm having to use I have this giant computer in my office that I've been having just a lot of little problems with and it's nothing major. It's just I'm running out of storage because these video files that I edit and I upload are typically 60 gigs right when they're edited and uploaded.
Um, 60 to 80 gigs. Sometimes you know if it's a really it's like an hour long video, it's an 80 gig file. If it's a 20 minute video, it's a a 30 to 40 gig 45 minute. It's usually like 60 gigs.
but that's not even the hard part. The hard part is is that I'm a Nut and I can't get rid of my original footage either. So I have all my original footage then I have the edited video. You know it's like I have so much stuff on my computer and I've been running into all kinds of little issues and um, you know you guys probably don't even want to know this, but I tend to off on rants like I do.
So I'm having to get I'm I'm probably going to end up looking into a raid setup for hard drives and it's just like oh my gosh, so many things that I've never really thought I needed to do. but uh Pat thank you very much for that super chat! So Pat donated uh through YouTube Super Chat that is Pat from Commercial Kitchen Chronicles He said he enjoyed my video yesterday. Good to see me turn it into a teaching moment and I'm definitely going to talk about that I have that on my list of things. Um, as we get through.
so let me see what the chat has to say. real quick. Um, no audio then video goes poof gone. So uh, Coconos has started.
Yeah, exactly. Um, reading through the chat right now. Uh, would there be a first? Oh okay. there we go.
Uh. reading through the chat. Um 4K is nice. your internet can't even run it anyways.
Yeah. I love 4K but it's just ridiculous. Man, you know it is absolutely ridiculous the amount of stuff. These are first world problems. A hundred percent total Tech Like ridiculously first world problems for sure. So yeah, um, okay. reading through here right now. All right.
So Uh Jacob Crabtree says a three-in-one start kit or factory start components each have their own perks. What do I prefer as a repair? if you choose to use a three in one. Do you keep it as a permanent repair or do I return it to install? OEM Great question. Bud Okay, so a three in One is a universal start capacitor.
uh, potential relay. Or it's actually supposed to be a current. really. but it's a potent.
It's a capacitor relay and an overload. Okay, built into a device. It's supposed to replace the starting components on fractional horsepower compressors single phase, typically 115. Sometimes you can get them in 230 volt.
but basically it replaces the starting components. So I Want to ask the chat right now? What are your opinions about three in one? So I'm asking the chat. Is it something that you leave in the system? Is it something that you use as a temporary solution? Or do you just you know, just leave them in or do you only go? OEM So I'm asking the chat right now I'm curious what your answers are. Three in one? We're not not talking about hard starts.
We're talking about three in one start kits for fractional horsepower compressors. What's your opinion about them? Let's see what the chat has to say. Um, reading through here: temporary until you get OEM temporary. Uh, let's see temp Intel OEM Okay, so a lot of people seem to say temp of OEM space says leave it if needed, use it to test then get the OEM says Mike B Uh, my opinion on three in Ones is I only use them for testing purposes.
Uh, they will get a compressor started Now let me let me old school myself here. Where's it at? Well, shoot, what happened to my compressor analyzer I Genuinely don't know where my giant compressor analyzer is. Hold on just one second. It'd be really funny if I stood up and I didn't have pants on, huh? But I did.
All right? Um, Well here's the compressor analyzer that I personally didn't use. Mine used to be the big giant one that used to be up there, but this is an Annie Okay, what an Annie is is. It's a device that has several different starting components in it, several different capacitors and what you would do is you would turn on a compressor and you'd push the test button. You could push the start button, you could do all sorts of things and you could test fire a compressor.
Okay, this was in case the start capacitor or starting components were bad or you were suspecting that they're bad. Okay, we would use a compressor analyzer now again. I didn't use this Annie One of my employees gave this to me I used a bigger one. All right.
But as far as three and one start kits, okay, Start capacitors. Whatever. I use them as a temporary solution. Back in the day, we had a compressor analyzer. If we thought the starting components were bad, we'd put the compressor analyzer on, start the compressor, let it run test current. If everything was good, then we'd go and get the starting components. Now we have three in one devices or even just Universal capacitors and what we can do is we can take a three in one device and we can put it on the compressor see if it starts and you know some people leave them on there. I Personally don't like to leave three in one Stark kits on the compressors.
Okay, because they're not using the factory designed capacitors. If you ever take a three in one, there's a couple different manufacturers that make them, but if you ever take one apart on them usually like, there's a sizing chart right and the sizing chart will say it's based off a horsepower. but if you pull the little start kit apart and look at the start capacitor, pull the sticker off of it and look at the microfarad rating on the star capacitor. majority of the time it doesn't match up to what the compressor manufacturer specs for their start capacitors.
Okay, oftentimes they're a lot smaller, but they can get the compressor started. The next thing is when you will use a three in one start kit. Okay, we're talking about the little I wish I had one. I used to have one here.
Yeah, I guess I don't I used to have one back there. but when you take the three in one, if you ever pull it apart, it has an overload inside of it. It has a relay and then it has the capacitor. Okay, what you're doing when you put that three in one on the compressor is you are removing one of the protection devices of the compressor.
So I'm going to ask the chat right now. what does moving the overload from the compressor little electrical body like electrical cover. There's a little cover and then the the relays in there usually a current relay and then there's an overload. The new three-in-one has the overload in the three in one device.
So what's the problem with moving the overload and I'm asking the chat to see if anybody has is thinking the same way that I'm thinking. okay so if you take that overload and move it into the three in one and no longer at the compressor, what are we losing there? We're losing a protection device that's built into that compressor and I'm asking the chat right now. Okay so um, there you go. Brian Sanders says it takes away the heat factor from the overload.
Exactly. Cyborg Sheep says it can't detect thermal anymore 100 you are changing the UL listing of that compressor now. I'm not huge on that term, changing the UL listing more. So What I'm concerned with is you're removing the protection device of the compressor.
You're taking the thermal overload that serves as two things it serves. It can sense current and it can sense heat. Okay, it has a bimetallic disc that's pushed up against the body of the compressor and a mass amount of heat can heat up that little bi-metallic disc and cause it to flex and break the common go into the compressor or if it runs too high a current, it can also heat up that little disc because the current running through it and it'll break the common going to the compressor. So when you use that three in one device again, I Know there's probably plenty of people watching right now in to each their own if you leave them on the system as a permanent replacement. so be it, that's on you. That's fine. I'm not I don't I'm not the kind of person out here that's going to say you're a hack or whatever like that's fine You do. You all do me personally.
I Use them to start a compressor. I Might use them to get me through a weekend, but I Always go back with the OEM start components. Okay, if the OEM start components don't start a compressor, then it's time to replace that compressor if it has the right voltage. Okay, so I'm not a fan of leaving three in ones, but I do keep them in my truck I use them for testing purposes I will tell you maybe I Don't know if anybody in the chat has been around this long, but there was another YouTuber um gentleman that I had massive respect for.
he's an older gentleman has been making YouTube videos for days and days and days. Very very nice gentlemen happens to be local to me in Southern California and I mentioned in one of my videos one time that I don't like the three in ones and I mentioned the exact reasons that I'm saying right now. This guy straight made a YouTube video criticizing me and then taking scenes from my video saying how I was wrong because I didn't like three in ones and I shouldn't bash them and I shouldn't talk bad about a product I was just like whoa bro like way to make me lose complete respect for you. um it was a while back and uh it was not gray Furnace Man no he would not do that.
That dude is awesome It was. It was not him 100 um but yeah it was crazy. Yeah I just couldn't believe that guy. he was so mad because I I've said in one of my videos that I don't like three in ones again I'm not going out looking at other people's videos and judging them.
This was a long time ago too. by the way. I'm not judging other people like I Keep my mouth shut I stay in my lane and mind my business and just for people to make a video criticizing me because I said I don't like three in ones like silly whatever. Some people have nothing better to do than hate.
That is 100 true. So it is. It was not Steve lab. So um and I'm not going to answer any more guesses but no, it was not Steve lab it was someone local to me in California So um, and the thing was was I had a lot of respect for the guy, but he kind of irritated me when he made that video so oh well.
it is what it is all right. Um, so yeah to answer your question Bud Long story short, yeah, I don't really care for three in ones I use them as a temporary solution to get a compressor going and that's it. So um, all right. so uh yeah. I kind of talked a little bit about computer problems. uh, bear with me I'm kind of working through some crazy stuff right now once. I get that all figured out. Hopefully the videos will get you know I've been trying to make the editing a little bit better, so stay tuned.
um I'm curious about you all and I would like to know for the people in the chat right now, what are your opinions about AI right? Artificial Intelligence? Um, there is a lot of push for artificial intelligence and I realize it's it's crazy right? and I realize that it's amazing what it can do and stuff. But I'm curious like what are your thoughts about artificial intelligence in the HVAC space? Do you guys? are you excited about it? Do you think it's going to be a problem? like my personal opinion about artificial intelligence is: I We need human interaction. We are people, people and we need to interact with people. So I don't like taking away human interaction.
but I do realize that like with certain things, artificial intelligence sounds like it can really help us with like coding and different things like that. But I'm curious to see what you guys have to say in the chat. Um, AI will be the downfall of humanity. Okay, that's that's one.
AI is going to be the end of humanity if they don't stop it now. Very interesting. Like those are some valid points I guess you know some people I mean even Elon Musk Had a conversation about AI because he uh the chat I think it was the chat GPT one I think he had something to do with that company before like and he separated from it or something like that. but yeah, he has a lot of warnings about AI too.
So uh, Jennifer says that they need to use their brains too like we do. Yeah I agree. Um, yeah. Total Tech says he's a bot.
uh, you know I I Think that AI can help in some things, but like for instance, I'm noticing because I'm in a lot of Facebook groups and a lot of the home or the residential business, owner groups and stuff and a lot of those people. and there's marketing companies that are already like setting up AI programs to cold call the customers and interact with customers. So that way there's not a person that actually has to do that job I don't really like that stuff I mean again to each their own what they want to do. but like I don't I don't know about you guys.
but when I have to pick up the phone and it's it's it's a computer system and it says push one to talk to this that drives me through the roof I like to talk to a person I like to make if I'm gonna make the effort to pick up a phone and dial something I want there to be a person on the other end of that line if I want to deal with a computer or a bot that's what typing on a keyboard's for in my opinion. But if I take the effort to pick up my phone which is very rare these days to actually pick up my phone and have a conversation I want to talk to a person I don't want to have to go through a robot that just drives me nuts I'm My wife will attest that I'm usually screaming at my phone operator jamming the zero button operator. you know, just like yelling at my phone. So that's just me. You know it is what it is. Uh Skynet is coming back 100 so uh. reading through here, watch free guy. All we need to know that's funny AI scares me.
Um AI can't replace the human brain? No, no, you know, but they're going to do a pretty good job of figuring out some crazy stuff with AI For sure. it is good for helping diagnose problems and bring better efficiency. It needs to augment service. Okay, so I agree I think that's a good point? You know? Uh AI is going to change every industry they will be dispatching diagnosing at a minimum.
Yeah, but imagine how difficult that's going to be I mean I guess I can see maybe it helping with dispatching but you know I run a small company so we have certain people that are good in certain areas you know and the dispatcher would need to know like hey, don't send this person to this call, only send this person to this call and I could just see that just creating problems. but who knows? you know? Um hello to everybody that's coming in. Uh jmf Productions what's up Man happy? Monday uh flat bill hats I Got a confirmation that I am supposed to be receiving them tomorrow. my first shipment of flat bill hats.
so we're going to be having Dad hats I ordered a very small amount of the dad hats which are the real wax fit floppy just you know, not floppy but just relax fit hats. and then I ordered flat bill hats which will be similar. they will not be the same material as my normal breathable sweat resistant hat. Okay, the flat bill.
We could not get this breathable material but it is a very nice uh canvas. It's a flex fit but it um you'll just have to see when I release the pictures. Okay, it'll make sense. Um, it's a snapback but it's a flex fit if that makes sense.
Okay, so um, but yeah, they'll be out there soon. So um yeah. Bill: I I did order a couple I didn't order a huge order of the dad hats I only ordered 25 of them but I did do a limited order on this to see how they sell. I did 50 flat bill and then I think I did or maybe I did 75 flat bill and then 25 dad hats I know I only did 25 dad hats because I just got to make sure um for setting parameters on an HVAC system.
AI is awesome says or cyborg sheep maybe? Okay uh if we get robots do we need workers comp insurance? Yeah because when the robots start going crazy and destroying the humans because they were doing their job wrong. Yeah, you're gonna need some sort of insurance for that. So um, curious, Dad had that is exactly what we were gonna. I'm gonna label them on my website as the Curious Dad hat. You know what? I should have done. Maybe maybe I'll do a limited production run where I put Bill's logo on the hat like Curious HVAC guy logo. Stay tuned. We'll figure something out.
Also, stay tuned because we are also in talks with the overtime guys. We're making a lot of changes to the show. Obviously the the core of the show is still going to be the same, but there's a good chance. um, we're going to be making some new merch designs and being a little bit more productive with that stuff.
So stay tuned some better hats and stuff. so we're working on all that stuff again. Got way too much stuff going on. Uh, phone menus exist so you don't talk to or so you don't talk to people for support.
What's worse screaming for an operator or screaming for an incompetent support rep 100 Ryan I Will tell you guys something that you guys probably aren't asking me about, but it is what it is. I accidentally I didn't accidentally I Had two licenses for Adobe Premiere Pro right? that's my editing software I Had bought another license because Bill was doing some work with Photoshop a while back and I had to have two licenses. If any of you guys know about editing softwares, a license for Adobe Premiere Pro is like uh, Creative Cloud is what I have and it's like the unlimited whatever you get access to all their stuff. Um, it's like 1100 a license right? So anyways I knew that I was gonna have to cancel that because Bill's not using it anymore.
So anyways, bills my buddy from HVAC overtime. Curious HVAC guys. So anyways, I'm getting to the point of this story. Okay, so I called to cancel the license because I again I had a notice in my phone reminding me to call them and let them know because it was gonna I renew once a year, right? So it renewed and it's like oh no, it charged my credit card.
It was like two days later I needed them to refund the amount. So I called I'm uh, talking to an OP to a person and they're like uh, you can't cancel your subscription and I'm like, why can't I cancel my subscription They're like because it's been two years since you signed up and I go no, it just renewed two days ago and he goes yeah, but you initially signed up two years ago and I go can I talk to a manager and he goes, well, there's no manager to talk to and I go Okay, well I need to talk to someone because what you're telling me doesn't make sense. It just renewed two days ago my mistake I told him I was out of town. Whatever I said I just need you to refund me for the one subscription I'm still gonna keep it, still use the first one you know and he's like no, we can't do that.
Long story short, after going back and forth, he finally reversed it and sent it back to me. But yeah, talk about an incompetent operator. That guy went through everything in his book saying no, we don't want you to cancel and it's like shut up dude I just wanted to cancel one license like it was just annoying. But anyways, now that you heard a story you didn't need to hear, when do I expect to carry ponchos for Merch I I don't think I will ever have ponchos man. Uh, just not something I think I could use Uh, who am I Asking to bot for a representative is who you are. Wait, who you are asking. the bot for a representative is who you are in real life, who you are asking the bot. So are you saying that like I don't know if I understand that Jennifer Are you saying that if I'm screaming at the phone that I'm just an all the time yeah? I mean there's no denying that 100 percent our 448a replacing 404.
What's up? What's my opinion? Mario's asking me Mario I have been using 448a to replace R404a for over two years now. It's not a big deal, but what I will say is if you are going to use R448a, your best bet is to upgrade the system. Okay, you can use it as a replacement for 404. You can make it work with an existing 404a system as long as it has Polyoester oil in it, but you're going to have to make a bunch of adjustments to the expansion valve.
The nozzle on the expansion valve is probably not going to be sized right for the 448a, the evaporator is probably not going to be sized right, and the condenser is probably not going to be sized right. So you know there's going to be manufacturers information saying that you can make it work. But your best bet is to upgrade the system. So for me: I don't do field conversions to 448a now I do Light Commercial refrigeration and air Conditioning I Do Not do so Supermarket stuff.
Okay, so I'm not taking an existing walk-in cooler that's 404a that just needs a new expansion valve I'm not converting it to 448a I'm only doing it if I'm going to design everything properly for the 448a to make it a seamless conversion. Okay, I'm not saying it can't be done, but there's a lot of work to be done with it. Okay, I'm going to continue to use 404a unless I have to use Um or to do an upgrade to the system, then I will replace the equipment and use 448a. Other than that, 448a is a high Glide refrigerant so you need to pay attention to that.
Make sure you're always charging as a liquid no different than 404. Make sure on it's going to have high compression ratios okay uh and uh. Well in I'm sorry, it's going to have to hide discharge temps. 448a runs a very, very high discharge temp.
So with that being said on low temp systems, um, you know you will run problems with overheating compressors. So low temp systems you need liquid injection or DTC valves or capillary tubes to help cool the compressor. So keep that in mind in the design phase. So if you're dealing with low Temp, your best bet is to upgrade the equipment.
Make sure that you put in a scroll compressor that has a DTC valve or a liquid injection valve and use the 448a accordingly. One thing you need to understand because of the high Glide the efficiencies change with the equipment. Okay, so you tin if I remember right? It's been a while since I've gone through this. I'm probably going to Fumble this up. but you're going to get more capacity out of your evaporator. You're going to get less capacity out of your condensing unit. so you can't just look at 404a BTU charts. You need to make sure you're looking at the Btu charts for 448a.
Okay, again, make sure that your nozzle is sized correctly and your TXV is sized correctly. There's a lot more that goes into sizing that equipment, but it's it. I know I made it sound complicated, but it really isn't It's not a big deal. so um yeah I I shouldn't have said high compression ratio total Tech that that didn't make sense.
So um, in high compression ratio situations, you will run high discharge temps is what I should have said. So I misspoke um 22 to 407 is the only conversion you enjoy anymore. Bow Hanger I actually have some issues with 407 and 22 conversions. So what I have found is on uh, carrier package units that have the accurator metering devices I did about seven or eight conversions to 407c last summer, but I did them right compressor changes um, and then charging by Target superheat because they were fixed orifice metering devices And what I notice is the systems would run brilliantly until the outdoor ambient temperatures hit above 105 degrees and then all of a sudden my current went way high on my compressors and I started blowing fuses.
But there was nothing wrong with the system. The first time it happened to one of my systems, I was like what the heck's going on and then I started systematically noticing it happened to every system that I put 407c in only on Carrier package units that had the fixed orifice metering devices. Another thing that I notice on the fixed orifice metering devices. with 407c is when you start them up.
Uh I was actually just working on one today. The suction saturation temperature drops down to like 15 20 degrees and then it takes about four minutes to slowly build back up. So the evaporator runs in a really low temp situation and then it takes a few minutes for the pressures to build back up. The saturation temperature comes up and then it'll run around 37 36 degrees and this is charged to proper Target superheat.
So I don't like the 407c when it comes to the conversions on the fixed orifice metering devices. I Will say that I have used 407c on a lot of Linux equipment that has Txvs. No problem, No issues whatsoever with Txvs, but with the fixed orifice metering devices above 105 degrees, Just nothing but problems. But who knows, maybe I'm doing something wrong.
So read through the chat. let's see what I say. Um, wouldn't the overload break the power wire? I'm assuming you're talking about. Uh, no, not necessarily. Sometimes they'll use a car the overload to break a common. um, it just depends on 115 volts. So uh, let's see what else. Um, overload breaks common on single phase and breaks all legs on three phase.
That's right. So uh, that's why we haven't had that problem here. Exactly Jennifer Because you're not hitting those hundred and five hundred and five is a pretty average temperature. We'll hit 115 and in extreme conditions I have actually One Time Hit 120 degrees at my own house.
So um, you have noticed, uh, the reduced suction saturation. It's a data center for us, so the load offsets. That's all all. TXV So both saying that? Yeah, definitely good to know.
Um yeah. All right. Uh, craziest call I've ever had I I don't know, You know those are always hard questions for me to answer. I don't know that I have like a crazy call to talk about.
um definitely had some weird situations. Let me think about that one though. Do me a favor, shoot me an email Hvacrvideos Gmail.com and I'll try to think about that. Um so I got a list of questions in front of me I'm gonna try to get to a few of those.
so I released a video I Was a little reluctant to release this video I Gotta say that I was actually really nervous because I didn't know how it was going to be taken. um I released a video where I showed a mistake that we made at our company from one of my employees. They made a mistake. It was a great coaching moment.
It was a good conversation I had with my employee but I released it and uh, it had pretty good feedback and and I'm glad that it did because I thought I was hoping that it would have good feedback I didn't mean to criticize anybody I wasn't trying to bash my employee or anything. I was using it as an education moment to let people know that sometimes people make mistakes and um, you know, as long as you don't continue to make those mistakes uh, you know you grow from them, then that's what's important. So someone asked me if I fired my employee for that. No, I wouldn't fire someone for that.
Now if they continue to repeatedly do that over and over again. Sure that would be something we would talk about, but sometimes people have off days and you don't want to have an off day like that. I'm not saying that that was an acceptable mistake, but you know, just stuff happens. But regardless, the thing that I wanted to talk about is, you know a lot of people.
So I mentioned that one of my pet peeves was, uh, that the person that did that job took the stranded wire and wrapped it around a ground screw and then tightened the ground screw. There's a time and place to wrap wire around a screw and there's actually a special washer that needs to go below the wire that kind of contains the wire and then you also have to wrap the wire in the right direction. So that way when you tighten it, it tightens the wire and doesn't squeeze the wire out of the screw. So the way that the person had the wire tightened on that particular video was the opposite direction. So as they tightened it, it would actually pull the wire out of the screw. The next thing is I made a comment in the video that it's not acceptable to wrap stranded wire around a screw. Another thing you need to remember is that I tend to make these videos for my employees and not so much for the general public. Obviously, the general public watches them.
so I have to remember. But as a business owner, you need to understand something when I go in and make a rule at my company, there's a reason behind making that rule. So you and I both know or all of us, however many of you there is watching this right now. We all know that you can successfully wrap stranded wire around a screw, especially a ground screw and and it will work and it'll probably work fine with no problems for a very long time.
Okay, but if you don't do it right, then that ground can potentially fall off. So for me I make decisions based off of potential errors that can happen. So for me, I have a company policy that we don't wrap wires around screws unless it's a solid wire, but even a solid wire is a pain in the butt to get off of a screw later on. So if you can I prefer to use stranded wire on most of my motor connections and ground connections.
Okay if I have to deal with solid Wire Yeah I would wrap it around the screw I would wrap it the right way. but stranded wire I Prefer to put a fork connector or a ring connector on there, crimp it on, and be done with it. Okay I realize that a ring connector is better because it can't fall off. Okay, yeah, there's good points that people made with that.
All right, let's see what else. But yeah, I have to make those decisions because basically, if there's potential that it can go wrong I prefer not to even do that. Let's talk about this. Someone asked me I have it down here.
further. Why I Don't use aftermarket parts on my equipment to save the customer money? people. Someone asked me that and that's a valid question. But here's my answer: as a business owner: I Find that there's there's less errors and less mistakes if we use.
OEM Parts Because there's less thought process that goes into selecting those parts. The manufacturer has already done all the hard work. If you go back in with the OEM part, you just put the part in and you're done with it. You don't have to make sure that you size the motor ride or anything like that if you use an aftermarket motor on a carrier package unit.
Okay, you actually have to go up a horsepower if if it says third horsepower on the OEM motor, you need to go with a half horsepower. Okay, and the reason why I say that and actually what you need to do is the way that they test the motors. What you need to do is don't even look at horsepower and look at the current. and when you see the existing OEM motor, if it says 4.7 amps, that's a three-quarter horsepower condenser fan motor. So you need to go with a three-quarter horsepower no matter what the horsepower says on the OEM motor. But that's just too much thought process. Sometimes we have to use an aftermarket part, but it's easier to use the OEM part because there's less thought process. And for a business owner like me, I have a policy that we only use OEM parts so there's less mistakes.
There's less potential of a mistake. Okay, and we're letting the manufacturer do the work. Now You and I both know that sometimes there's some manufacturers that just have horrible OEM Parts Yeah, that's fine. We'll address that when that comes.
But for the most part, I Stick with OEM Same thing with my company policy to not wrap stranded wire around screws. It's just less potential for a problem. Just use a ring connector or a fork connector and be done with it. Okay, less potential of a problem.
Let's see what else the chat has to say. A swamp cooler and high humidity that's as useless. That's funny. Yeah, true thoughts on press fittings.
Do I think they are the future? Crute 13. Do I think that press fittings are the future? I Think that press fittings are a part of the future. but I Do not think that there is an absolute only press every single connection ever. Again, No.
Okay, but there's a time and place to use press. Um I've been using press fittings for a couple years I don't use them a lot. I've only got so many jobs out there because I was testing them out. Um, never had any problems, but there's a lot of prep that goes into the Press fittings.
Okay now I Just did an ice machine job last week where I pressed on all the drain lines. That saved me a lot of time. The fittings cost a little more money, but it saved me a lot of time. Okay, so I was able to get that job done faster.
Now in that particular situation I did not press the refrigeration side on because of several circumstances of where we were at. but um I think that press is part of the future for sure. but I do not think it's going to replace praising completely. There's a time and place for both.
Okay, all right, let's see what else we got going on in the chat. Um, reading what I'm missing you think not looking at the other exhaust for reference was the main thing. um I'm assuming you're talking about my other Tech Some aftermarket is fine in certain areas. OEM is more reliable for when in doubt.
Yes, um, reading through here. Uh, okay I already answered that question Cool Okay, I'm going to uh, let's see Brian Sanders says he presses drain lines but he sweats Refrigeration that's perfect Man, you know and again, this is the thing. Like we don't have to have this, this contention or this problem. Brian if you told me that you press every single Refrigeration connection good for you. you know, like I don't understand why. if I post a video about pressing refrigeration lines, you get a million emails in comments. you're a hack, you just can't braise. You can't do this and it's like why? like I don't understand? Like what are people just bored and they have nothing else to do better than just to to comment and and try to drag other people down.
If you choose to press, that's cool. good for you. You know? if I choose to press, who cares? It is what it is, you know? Um I go out there and I use it to my convenience. If I find that pressing refrigeration lines is going to save me time or it's going to save me a step of having to braise in a weird situation, then sure.
I'm gonna choose that. or sometimes I'm still gonna braise. it's it's 50 50 depending on where I'm gonna go. It just depends on every situation.
so you know, um, what happens when you put the wrong capacitor too high or too low? It's going to change the delivered power to the motor and it's going to cause potential problems. Okay, um, so it just depends. You know you need to go with the manufacturer's spec capacitors and and it's going to throw a lot of variables off so it just depends on the situation. Um, what's my view on Daikin equipment? Any experience I Do not have any experience Cameron uh other than friends and people that I know that work with Daikin equipment.
Um I will say that with every manufacturer out there, there is problems 100. There's not a manufacturer out there that does not have problems. Okay, everybody does. Uh, I will say that.
Um, for instance. and I'm gonna tease it right now too because I know we got a lot more people in here. Um, uh, and the people that were in the beginning? You guys already know. But um, you know I chose some really high-end equipment for my house, right? and uh, you know I'm sure that there's going to be problems like I'm sure there is, you know.
But I look at things from a different aspect, right? because I'm going to put in this like super fancy, high-end whatever crazy system, right? And if it breaks down, I get to make a video about it so you know Now of course I don't want to choose the crappiest piece of equipment I can find, but it is what it is. You know like I'm just I'm gonna have fun with this and um, but anyways I'll tease it real quick I did make a decision on my equipment I'll share a little picture real quick. Um, this is just a teaser I'm not going to tell you what brand I chose, but I'm sure some people in the chat, some people have already tried to guess it. Um, some people have guessed it right.
I'm not going to confirm which ones are right, but this is the brand equipment that I chose, so figure it out. If you know, you know if you don't you don't All right? So um, all right. when you are using a fork connector though, there's something to understand too. So a fork connector is the little one that has the two little. It's like a round connector, but it's it's you know. Open right here and you can put it on a screw and you can tighten the screw down on top of it. Here's the problem: if you use the wrong Fork connector. it can spread the forks out when you tighten it so you need to pay attention.
There's Blues There's yellows, There's pinks. You need to make sure that you use the right size that doesn't bind with the screw. so when you tighten it down it doesn't spread the fork apart. Or just use a ring connector and be done with it.
Okay, all right, let's see what else. Um, is it true. It's not good to vacuum below 200 microns because you risk pulling contamination And no, that is not the truth. The actual factual question is and this is someone asking a question in the chat.
Um, there was a rumor spread around many, many years ago and it's always kind of just been this this wives tale that if you pull an evacuation below 200 microns that you actually start to break down the refrigeration oil and then it'll lose its lubric lubricity I Don't know if that's how you say that it'll Lube Its it'll lose good God It'll lose its lubrication properties, but that has been disproven. and um, it's not really a problem. Okay, so in refrigeration equipment, if you're dealing with low Temp and ultra low temp, the recommendation from the manufacturers is to pull to about 200 microns or a little bit below. Let your Decay test not rise above.
You know, whatever, you set your target at 500 microns. If you're working on me medium temperature Refrigeration Typically want to pull down to about 400 or 500 microns, then let the system go into a Decay making sure that it doesn't go above a thousand microns. If you're doing air conditioning, they say pull down to 500 microns and then let it go up to a thousand. Okay, in Decay you don't want to see any higher than a thousand.
Um, but yeah, it's I Don't think it's really true. There's There's a lot of information. I've seen conflicting information about pulling too low of a vacuum. You're not really going to run into a problem.
So honestly, let's be frank and I'm not judging people. but I See people posting on the internet all the time I Pulled to my lowest vacuum Ever. Six Microns. No, you didn't Okay, that system is Not at six microns.
Okay, you're measuring in a really weird spot. Um, I Can guarantee you that if you have a uh a system, especially a existing system that you pumped down or has been in operation, you are not going to get below 500 microns on that system unless you change the oil in the compressor because you're never going to degas that oil completely. You're never going to pull all the moisture out of the oil if it's a brand new system and you're pulling down on the line set only and the evaporatorical. Yeah, you might see 200 microns. But if you're seeing six microns, you're not pulling your vacuum on the right spot and you don't have a proper gauge. You're not getting your system to six Microns. It's just not happening. Okay, um, you're just that's just not happening.
Um, let's see. reading through the chat. Uh Zach Cody says he's never got a system below 92 microns and I'd even argue that at 92 microns? Dude, Um, you're you're probably not getting a true 92 microns either. So super tech? Uh, what's a vacuum purge gang? Thanks for that! Super Chat Man, that's awesome! Do I have any problems with Low Knocks furnaces when I first fire up If you do any residential split systems, you know we are going into summer, but you don't want problems next season? John Uh no.
I Really haven't done any installs on Low Knocks. But what I can tell you about Low Knocks is you need to make sure that your equipment is sized right. You need to make sure that your airflow is right across your heat exchanger. and then also, you need to make sure that you set the gas pressure correctly.
On a low knock system or a 90 plus system, you have to use a manometer to set the gas pressure appropriately. Okay, you have to make sure it's set right on low fire and high fire. Make sure you have proper uh O2 coming into the furnace and you have a good clean exhaust going out of the furnace too. Uh, but yeah, I'm not totally experienced on low nox furnaces.
I just have a general understanding of them so let's see what else should change the name of the stream to HVAC Misconceptions Yeah, so um, only Jim Bergman and NASA pull sub 5 Micron vacuums? Yeah, probably. So any thoughts or changes? any thoughts on the changes in measure quick with the screenshots? Yeah, I was supposed to talk about that last week and then I didn't do a stream. so Measure Quick recently updated. Uh, a policy.
So okay, let's let's flash back. Okay, let's look back like a year and a half two years ago. Measure Quick Uh, Jim Bergman created Measure Quick and I'm paraphrasing. Okay, but he came out and he said, you know what? I'm going to start charging for these reports, right? He had these premium reports that are really fancy and Measure Quick.
Measure Quick. Uh, diagnostic software that can work with a good majority of the digital tools out there. Okay, so Jim realized that he was spending a lot of money on setting up the software and this was a couple years ago and he made the premium reports. or he made the the reports a premium feature.
Okay, and be able to print the reports and email the reports. You had to be a premium member. You have to buy something called Qubits. Okay, that's the way that he does his monitor, his his charges on there.
it's it's five dollars a system and I think it's good for two years and you can work on the system and do reports on it and within those two years. but every two years you have to buy a new, you have to buy five dollars more of qubits or something like that. Okay, so uh, he made that and then everybody came out and was Furious because he was charging for the reports. Okay, which I never understood why everybody was Furious that he's charging for the reports I guarantee he's put millions of dollars into the software. Okay, but regardless, everybody was Furious about him charging for these reports and the qubits and all this stuff. So everybody found a workaround and they started screenshotting and then emailing the screenshot to the customer or to their boss. So they circumnavigated his premium features and started using screenshots. Okay, then it's been a couple years Jim decided that I think it's May 1st or something the screenshots you now have to pay to use a screenshot.
Okay, so you can no longer screenshot on the device in the permissions when you try to do it. It gives you one time and then the second time it says you can't do it anymore unless you're a premium subscriber. Okay, if you're a premium subscriber, you can screenshot all you want. You can send reports.
You can do all that stuff. So what are my opinions on the matter? My opinions are: pay the money. Who cares? Okay, I'm gonna tell you a secret. Okay, just put money in your damn qubit account, put 100 in there and don't use it.
And then you could take as many screenshots as you want. Problem solved. Okay, I Understand, you know I Don't agree with? you know I don't like the qubit system, but that's not my I mean who am I to tell him that I don't like the way he sets up his company like you know if he's asking me for my opinion? Sure, but you know I don't agree like I don't care for the qubit thing but it is what it is and I love the software. So I'm gonna pay I put a couple hundred bucks in the account every once in a while and just I personally don't use reports or anything I just put the money in there to say thank you because I use this software and it's awesome.
Okay, so the whole everybody getting upset about the screenshots like understand you guys circumnavigated paying for premium to print the reports out and you started screenshotting. So then of course it was inevitable that he was going to catch up to that and say no more screenshots because you got to understand. You know I I don't know this to be factual I do not know Jim Bergman I'm not friends with him I just know information just from observing. Okay, but I know he's got to have millions of dollars you know, funneled into that software and he's got to make a profit or he can't keep it out there.
you know? So just put a couple bucks in your qubits account and and be done with it. Take all the screenshots you ever want to. So um, Jason Johnson says let the man get paid for his work. Yeah, Sue 100 What was the most Beatdown reach in box I've ever seen? Uh, that's a hard one. but I don't know the answer to that one right now. Uh, 250 microns. But when closing off the CRT the micron gauge will slowly climb to ol' and you are you missing something? You clean your micro ingredients regularly. Did you mess up the sensor? No.
If if it climbs up to Ol what that is is, that's basically saying it's that atmosphere. your vacuum core removal tool is likely leaking. um, or the connection you have something leaking by uh What uh or you have a refrigerant leak in the system. I Mean it's possible you have a leak in the system too.
So do a nitrogen test, do a Decay or a pressure test over time. uh, temperature compensated pressure test. If you don't have any refrigerant leaks with the pressure test, then do an evacuation. and if you're still when you sh when you isolate it and you're watching the Decay if it climbs up to zero or whatever, then you've either got a leak or yeah, you've got a leak somewhere.
Okay, so I bet you it's at your core removal tool. Even if you buy the most expensive core removal tools I don't care if it's an Appian A yellow jacket. Uh, what's the measure? Quick One measure Quick accutools one which is really just a rebranded yellow jacket that has extra O-rings in it. They all leak okay, especially after they get older.
Uh what? I tend to notice and it's a frustrating thing for me is core removal tools? Like no joke. They literally last a season. You pay like forty dollars for one of them and they last a season and the next season you're better off just throwing it away and getting new ones. They make o-ring rebuild kits I challenge every one of you out there to order the Appian rebuild kit for the vacuum core removal tool and do one of them and then let me know how easy that process is.
It's a pain in the butt and it's honestly for the 40 bucks, just buy one a new one every year and just throw the damn thing away. Um, but yeah, there's a leak somewhere in there. So all right. Um, in my recent video where I had an employee make some mistakes about an exhaust fan repair, did I yell at him? Did I fire him? I already answered the question about did I fire him? No? Did I yell at him? No? There's no point in yelling at your employees and if you yell at your employees, what are you really solving right? There's a huge communication problem if you're having to yell at your employees.
Um, you shouldn't really be yelling to anybody, right? But I'm not going to say I don't Did I not get upset with my teenage daughter at some point and raise my voice I'm sure I have, but I felt really guilty afterwards. Um, if you have to yell at someone there's a communication breakdown and you need to figure something out. Usually it's like if I have to yell at someone it's usually a frustration on my with myself and a frustration on my part. and I'm taking it out on someone else and that's not really working. Okay, so no I don't yell at my employees. Okay and and if if I had to yell at my employees, it's time to separate from them because it's just not a good situation so there shouldn't be any place for yelling at anybody within a job. Um, let's see. reading what I'm going reading through the chat right now.
Did I take his paycheck away? No. I did not. So um, reading through here. Okay, uh, when it comes to exhaust fans, I've been getting a lot of comments from people, especially in the last video.
I should have. Just if I just go with a direct drive exhaust fan, then you don't have to worry about belts or pulleys ever again. Okay, here's my issue with direct drive exhaust fans I have several out there several manufacturers and getting the motors can be a pain in the butt sometimes. Okay, I will say that Captive Air they're pretty much one of the exceptions.
They tend to use a motor that I can find in aftermarket replacement for in a intern situation until I can get the OEM motor. Okay, so if I have a captive air direct drive fan, the OEM Motors are pretty decent and then also you can use like an aftermarket motor but with a good majority of my fans out there, the OEM direct drive Motors you're not going to find a replacement for them locally. You typically have to order them from a factory and when an exhaust fan goes down, the customer typically needs it fixed. ASAP They don't have time to wait for things, so I tend to be a little apprehensive about doing direct drive.
Motors Uh, In a perfect world, if you do a direct drive motor, you're going to need a variable frequency drive to run it and that Vfd should be installed in a conditioned space where the air is clean and they have proper power going to it without low voltage and high voltage spikes without surges and different things. Because Vfds are very sensitive, most of my customers that have chosen to install direct Drive Motors and have Vfds on them. they do not have power conditioning on the building. we have Vfd failures.
We have a lot of issues and it just tends to be my headache. So I prefer belt driven in that situation because if it's a belt drive motor, I could just go to the local supply house and get a new motor I can go get a pulley and be done with it. Okay, yeah, it's kind of frustrating to having to align things. It's one of those things I appreciate.
you know direct drive Motors and variable frequency drives and ECM Motors like I appreciate what you can do with them I appreciate the potential of electricity savings, but when you have to replace them, the return on investment it just disappears because they realize that you know the the the replacement cost is usually just insane. Super tech. thank you very much for that. Super Chat uh do I ever have some of my customers use parallel racks for their Refrigeration Super Tech is asking I have had I've only had one customer that had a parallel rack for their Refrigeration it was a mini rack. Uh, it was uh, one condensing unit that had two scroll compressors. It was a parallel system and it ran everything medium temp in the restaurant. so that's two walking coolers one two, three, four, five, six, seven, eight Refrigeration remote Refrigeration units Uh, they had Hot Gas defrost on it. Um yeah, it was all fancy right? but the customer didn't really want when I took over the restaurant.
it was in just horrible shape and the equipment was just disastrous and the customer didn't want to keep maintaining that equipment and they just went to single component systems. So I have had it happen before and I have had those systems out there but most customers don't really see the return on investment because it's hard to find people to work on them and then they just end up getting butchered. Like when I took over that system, it was just completely butchered, Things were bypassed. It was just a mess.
So um, all right, reading through here. Uh, no. Vfds soft starters for the win. Okay, um, all right.
so why not remove adjustable pulleys and put in a fixed Groove pulley. A lot of people have brought that to my attention. So on a lot of my exhaust fans, you have a variable pitch pulley for the motor pulley and then you have a fixed Groove pulley for the driven pulley right or sheave. I'm sorry.
um, so uh, Interestingly enough, the motor pulley sheave debacle Between the two. There's some people that call them a sheave, some people that call them a pulley, some people that call them all kinds of different things. I've done a deep dive on that and there is no genuine right way to describe them. The easiest way to understand from all the research that I've done is that manufacturers themselves and Engineers themselves.
