This video is brought to you by Sportland Quality Integrity and tradition. Good morning! So today we have a service call on some AC's not working. The customer's actual complaint is that one of their bar AC's they don't know which one, this one or this one is not working. They say that a couple days ago about a week ago someone saw like a puff of smoke or something out the dining room but they didn't notice anything else.
So they let it be. and uh, over the weekend it got really hot in the bar area. so again the bar would be that unit or that unit. But we're going to look at everything because customer doesn't do routine maintenance.
So I went ahead to the thermostats and just turned everything on. so everything should be calling for cooling. and we're going to start with the bar Se's I'm going to start with this small one right here and then we'll work our way over from there. Looking at this panel I was like there's like oil right here.
What's that about? So I open this up and I'm confused here and I'm like why what's going on here? There's oil all over these wires and then I see an old pressure control that someone has bypassed sitting right here. This guy has no gas in it. That's what's wrong with it. It ain't got no gas in it.
Um yeah. fun stuff. So this would have been the high pressure switch. this would have been the loss of charge switch so that's a problem.
Let's not just stop there, let's keep looking. Whole indoor blower assembly is done. That would have been. Oh, blower motor bracket is broken.
Motor's still warm. This thing still has power. What the heck? man? disconnect is bad. It's It's not engaging.
There was ever a candidate for replacement. This is it. But the funny thing is, this customer will fix this. R22 Refrigerant Leak repair Whole new blower assembly G Guaranteed they will fix this.
Even with my crazy high quote, they will fix it. Um, this is a 2004 unit. Nice. All right.
Well, we're going to keep on going. We're not stopping there. AC Filters are plugged nice and dirty. You can see light through them, but they're dirty dirty.
That's pretty bad. Let's have a look at the heat exchanger. That's our next step. First glance, the heat exchanger doesn't look too bad, but definitely itely see an interesting rub point right at that hanger bracket.
Um, there may be a giant crack down there that you guys can't see right on the actual main. like uh, baffle plate or whatever. possibly. So I'm going to visually inspect this a little bit more, but it actually doesn't look as bad as I Thought it would.
Kind of feels like it had been running recently cuz it's warm. Maybe it was like going off on uh, cuz the blower assembly doesn't work so it might have been trying then going off on overload or something. or uh, lockout. Heat exchanger ended up being okay, but this is, uh, this looks like the unit that I just had the fire at where the indoor blower assembly caught fire, the motor and destroyed itself. It's actually a different restaurant, but same looking unit. same actual model number on that unit too. Um, what we're going to do is I'm going to power power this guy up I Went ahead and pulled the wiring for the indoor blower motor because that's just done. Um, and we're going to turn the power switch on and I'm actually going to push in the contactor.
Cool. I Wanted to make sure that the compressor actually pumped and it does. So the compressor actually pumps. Um, whether or not it's good? I don't know, but I just wanted to make sure it wasn't locked up or something.
so we're good on that. So we're going to have to give them a quote here. but I'm going to go ahead and look at their other units and see uh, what's going on with those two real quick. Next unit right here.
Uh, I had turned on the disconnect I mean I turned on the thermostat and got both stages calling. Well, at least I think both stages are calling both condenser fan motors don't indicate both stages. Um, but I'm going to pull this panel off and then we're going to have a look at the compressors I Have a feeling the belt's going to be extremely loose. Customer doesn't do maintenance so we'll see.
Okay, both compressors are running cold suction lines, but look at that evaporator, it's all frosted up. We're going to go and shut it down. Filters will be plugged and uh, belt will be loose. guaranteed.
What do you know? Look at that. Barely even a belt left. It's just been running, ruining the pulley, just going crazy there. Nothing's trashed.
I'll get a new belt cuz I have an extra from the last time we worked on it and then, uh, we'll check the filters out too. This carrier is a little bit better than some of the other ones, but even this is kind of a stupid design when it comes to tightening the blower assembly. I'll give them that. They gave you a tension rod right here with a nut on each side, but you still got to undo all these bolts right here on the top of the bracket and down here on the bottom, right there and then you adjust it via this guy right here.
So for this situation, um I tried to put the uh, the belt on and it was way too tight. So basically we're going to tighten this down and that's going to pull the blower up and reduce the tension on it and then we can put the belt on and tension it properly. Um, how it's supposed to be done And got it tensioned up where it should be. Nice and good.
not too tight, everything's tightened back down. Uh, lots of belt debris in there. But I'm going to put this panel up and then we're going to go have a look at the air filters now. Surprisingly, the evaporator is really clean.
So the last time we worked on this unit, we must to clean that evaporator. But the filters. Yeah, they're dirty. They're not like completely plugged, but they're dirty enough that they're going to cause a problem. So I'll pick up some new filters and we'll just put new filters in all the AC's and then, uh, we'll uh, get this guy back up and running. but I'll put the panel on and make sure it works. First, All right in our situation here: I Don't feel the need to go any further than the belts and the filters. Uh, I turn the unit into full cooling.
It has a decent temperature differential from the supply to the return. that does not necessarily indicate 100% proper operation, but it's a pretty good indication. Their original call here was bar: AC Not working. Okay, we found that that unit right there is completely down.
and then this unit was pretty much completely down too because of a loose belt. Okay and dirty filters. So I got this up in operation. Customer's going to be happy I'm still going to go get some filters right now and then I did get their approval.
They want me to go ah and check the filters and belts on the other ACS too while I'm here. All right we are good to go. Filters and belts are changed. Wait till you see this one though.
All the AC filters were dirty but they weren't plugged plugged except for this one. Look at this one, you can barely even see the light through it like these ones are nasty. Like dirty crazy. But yeah, we changed them all.
Um, this AC is working the other bar unit. This bar unit over here is down I disconnected it to pulled the fuses out, turn the gas off all that stuff. although there's nothing wrong with the heat exchanger, but still, we'll give them a quote to fix that one. I'm pretty confident they'll fix it.
you'd be surprised and I'm going to get all my stuff off the roof. Move on to the next one. I Still bet you uh that they were going to have me repair that AC I'm I'm telling you, just wait. but I'll do a quote just like normal.
I'll give a quote to replace and a quote to repair and majority of the time they end up going with the repair so we'll see. um but you know I think as I was watching this I I Thought about a great important moment in the video was the moment when I walked up to the unit and I saw as I was taking the the panel off that I saw oil on the bottom right and then when you get the panel off, you set it to the side and it's like hey, it has a refrigerant leak clearly there's not enough gas in it and then I bump the contactor the compressor ressor ran I thought maybe there's just a chance that you know what happens if I said ah, there's nothing I can do I'll just quote you know to replace a compressor. If I would have stopped at that point right there and not looked at the blower assembly, it would have been a rude awakening when it came time to change the compressor and try to start it up and then boom you get where I'm going with that. So you know the whole big picture thing is so important.
just always trying to take a you know, take a step back and look at the big picture. um you know quote big quote big look big you know you can always if the customer you quote big basically and then but understand it's okay if the customer doesn't you know want to do that much work but I always look at the big picture so um but you know then I went through the rest of the rooftop equipment cuz the customer wants me to I literally just had the phone call with the facilities Department talking same thing you know no PMS but if we're on site go to town kind of a thing you know. So I was there change the filters? You know everything else seemed to be operating okay and uh, we'll see I know they're not going to do anything with this until the first of the year. So come the first of the year I'll start sending emails and then you know, see if they want to change out the unit or what if they were to change out the unit. it would be super smart if they change out two or three of them cuz it's like we're going to have a crane out there. Might as well swap out two three package units. You know, Well, you got it. but who knows, we'll see how it goes.
Hey I really appreciate youall making it to the end As usual. Um I Want to wish everybody a happy holidays no matter uh, what religion, what you celebrate or anything I Hope you get to spend time with your family. um for me it is December 20th. Out there getting it done properly, even if the customer tries their best to sabotage the equipment. Hoping 2024 brings you & your family joy and health.
I recently started working at Johnstone Supply, love watching your videos to learn lingo, parts and issues. Service area Barrhaven??
From my perspective “we” have been trained to accept low quality and short life from equipment. Twenty years old is still new. It’s not even from before the (last) turn of the century! Those owners know that the newer something is, the lower it’s quality and the shorter the life. More and more failure prone electronics, as well as cheaper and cheaper components, probably all from China. I want to see Americans employed in skilled positions to keep well made equipment in service for as long as possible rather than funneling our dollars to support Communist Slave Labor in enemy nations. Are you in Kanata ?
Soon as you said it was an r22 unit i woulda just qouted an entire replacement. That unit’s on its last days
Big Clive sent me here 😀 greetings from Belgium
Merry christmas chris wishing for you and your familly happy new year 🎉🎉
and by giving them the big picture by checking everything you save them money for having to pay for a revisit should it not be apparent on startup and save yourself from blame because they think you sabotaged it..🤷
My facility’s filters get that dirty ( if not more ) in 65 days or so due to economizer minimum position.
Merry Christmas to you and your family ❤

Merry Christmas to you and your family!
Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year to you and your family mate.
Merry Christmas. May it be bright and quiet 😊
Merry Christmas to you too. 🎄☃️🥂🎊
Same to you brother merry Christmas ❤
No maintenance = destroyed equipment.
I'm currently getting a lesson on why some customers fix old junk rather than replacing it. For our own office with like a three ton RTU, looking at about the price of a new BMW M5 to replace it just because the building owner does everything the hard way.
Merry Christmas, Chris and family. Hope you have a Happy, Safe and Prosperous New Year !
Its like a health inspector entering a run-down restaurant and seeimg multiple flaws the longer they stays there
How many emergency service calls you think you'll get this Christmas weekend? 😊
Here’s a quote for this customer:

Merry Christmas Chris! Service area Orleans??
Take a break to enjoy Christmas with your family. Happy New Year 2024.
Merry Christmas
New isn't always the best quality Are you in Barrhaven ?
One thing, these places have different buckets to pay from. They will have repair money, but will not have replacement money or maintenance money. And you wonder how these place make money. Service area Ottawa??
Do you know what E0 means on mini split ac?
I'm trying not to throw up looking at the first unit. Sickening! Service area Kanata??
Happy holidays to you and your family.
When it comes to repair, or replace, are you still running into crazy long lead times for new equipment?
Merry Christmas to you and your family. Thank you for all the great videos.!! Are you in Orleans ?
Nice sllingblade reference.
Feliz navidad
people are breathing that air?!?!?!?! EWWWWWWWWW
Merry Christmas Chris. Thanks for another great video 😊
Decision to repair: Replacement = Capital budget expense, probably means troublesome approval process from management. Repair = operational budget = little or no upper level approval
Thank you, Chris. Merry Christmas to you. Service area Nepean??
Hi chris i love your videos, i am only 11 and I love watching your videos, merry christmas, one thing, becareful doing repairs on those package units😅😊 Are you in Nepean ?
Chris, I wish I could support the channel other than watching vids but unfortunately I'm too young. Merry Christmas though I think im interested in some merch tho.
Have you ever had a unit that was so bad that the Cost to Repair was Legitimately less than the Cost to Replace?
Crazy how these people won't replace r22 equipment. I'm constantly fixing that old stuff in the summer.
As billy mays used to say on his infomercials but wait there’s more 😂😂😂
You stuck your hand in the blower motor assembly with the disconnect switch still on. do you really think you should be teaching others how to make repairs
Merry Christmas and Happy New Year, Chris! I hope you have a good one.
Merry Christmas Chris 🎄🎄🎄🎄🎄🎁🎁🎁🎁🎁To you and your family from my family.
Merry Christmas Chris. Thanks for all the great videos. Are you in Ottawa ?
who else is surprised by how many issues the blower assembly has
Merry Christmas and Prosperous New Year to you and your family❤
Sporlan is back lets gooo
R22 unit built in 2004?
Merry Christmas to you and your whole family.
Unit repair $9,347 replacement $9,200
I would purposefully make replacement cheaper 🤣🤣
Feliz navidad Chris que tengas una hermosa noche navideña en compañía de tus seres queridos de corazón lo deseo. Saludos y abrazos desde Coacalco estado de México.
Hey Chris how are you? 1 hour ago i was working on one of this Carrier almost same as this one that yiu have work on it. Got a problem with furnace the inducer fan was not running i replaced the control board inducer came on but igniter was not sparking because of gas i got 6 led on control board. I order the gas valve, ignitet and ignition wire. Do you think could be from gas valve? And 6Led on at control board
Thank you for all of your videos and Merry Christmas
Chris good stuff. In the restaurant industry they never do maintenance. It's such a shame. I only have one mom & pop sandwich shop that stayed on top of their equipment. I've always said it's cheaper for maintenance then 2 or 3 repairs.
Two stage system with different refrigerant in each compressor?
