The HVAC industry has some new fees that seem to be trending. These fees are tacked on to bills from the suppliers when purchasing parts and are sometimes a surprise! In this video, we go through some of these fees. My goal isn't to say if they are right or wrong. I just want to keep you informed.

    Get the estimate in writing.
If it is NOT there on the estimate, they cannot legitimately charge you for it.

Warranty shipping, again that should be an upfront item to be aware of. If it is not on the written estimate, tell them to pound sand.

Just like fuel prices from UPS or FedEx or other shipping companies, the customer pays in the end. It will either be bundled into the cost or, like our company did it, an additional fee called "fuel surcharge" was added. Also, out of area work was/is charged mileage.

Everything up front to the customer.
The contractor is the supplier's customer.
The homeowner/business owner is the contractor's customer.

It's the "surprise" part that is bad. They need to tell you about it.

Never Believe that; " it's Temporary" once you accepted that b.s. charge theyll keep hitting it with you.

The shipping fee been here for a few years. *Another b.s. charge

that's why their hitting you in an inflation fee .. Just added $$$$ for the owners!

"Hidden" fees, everywhere you look, all kinds of industries.

We should acknowledge the govt led by example when they set it up so sales tax doesn't show up until checkout. See one price, walk out having paid another. In some countries, the price on the item includes iva (the extra fees) so wysiwyg. The medical community was probably the most notorious in recent history for adding charge after charge, but some notorious president said no, we need transparent upfront pricing. On deliveries, we had a fuel surcharge at one point. I think the same on airline tickets. Whatever the market will bear…

It's called "make hay while the sun shines". Insurance companies do this all the time with premiums, and remember when people were selling hand sanitizer for $50 a bottle on ebay?

I hate being nickel and dimed. Tell me the price. The price is the price. Adding this fee and that fee just upsets me. (yeah, airlines, we all hate your pricing structure, rental car/truck companies too).

I get that prices are going up on everything and estimates can't be valid for very long (transitory my tail). but c'mon, either the contractor has to eat it to make the estimate valid or they need to push back on the supplier. Or be up front and honest and say "hey, this supplier screwed me, I can't cover the fee, we can find something else to use (cuz FU scummy supplier) or we'll have to up it..

It's a business problem. If the wholesale price means they sell it for $1000, what do they do when a rise in the wholesale cost means they now need to sell it for $1200? The bookkeeping gets messy when you have multiple compressors in your inventory that cost different when purchased wholesale. This "temporary" charge is their way of handling that. It may be splitting the difference. Instead of selling the first two for $1000 and the next two for $1200, they sell all four for $1100. And the bad news is that temporary $1100 charge likely to be replaced by a more permanent charge of $1200 based on the new wholesale price. Are you in Orleans ?

Shipping fees on a warranty item vs. a purchase of the same item? More B.S. Might be time to hire lawyers to research this idea.

Suppliers need to substantiate that b.s. If they are seeing "inflation fees" from the manufacturers, then it seems fair to say they'd pass it on however, most manufacturers would simply increase the price of the material as they normally would and sell it to the supply house. Honestly, its just a greedy method to get more revenue. Most consumers would keep walking if they saw some dreamed up idea like that. If all warehouses do that, you are against the wall but I'd do business with those who do not play games such as this lame idea. Prices are bad enough as it is…no point in keeping the bandits employed.
Same thing is happening with the beef industry. Cost of doing business hasn't increased for them as much as they are selling products for higher prices. It's simply a gouge them while we can idea due to COVID and "inflation". We stopped buying overpriced beef and continue to buy pork which still is sold for the same price/lb as it always has been, excluding bacon.
Business owners are feeling the pinch as you say and are trying to keep their margins high enough to keep their style of living…too bad, join the crowd.
