What is the best pool heater to buy? We already have a solar cover, but we would like to use the pool all year round, so you do need a heater to do that and there are three types of heaters. I want to talk about the first one and probably the most common one is a gas pool heater. Now you can get one of these for both in-ground and above-ground pools, they're, pretty costly, and this is something you plumb into your filter system. So you have your pump, it goes into your filter and then it goes into your heater to heat it up, and then it goes into your.

Maybe if you have a chlorinator or salt water system and then it goes back into your pool. So a gas heater is really good, really really good at heating the water very quickly - and there are two different types you can get a natural gas. You can have natural gas pipe directly into the heater or you can get a propane heater which, in this case, you're gon na, have to have a giant propane tank in your backyard, and i'm definitely not talking about the propane tanks. You use for grilling we're talking about a big old propane tank that you'd have in your backyard because you maybe couldn't get natural gas piped into your house.

So there are two types: this is using literal like fire and and it's heating up a copper element and water is passing through that and it's getting hot and it gets piped back into your pool. This works really really really well. The second type is a heat pump. Now this is a a pump system that actually uses the outside ambient temperature to heat up the water and it's definitely much more eco-friendly, because you're not using gas to heat the pool you're just using um like a big, powerful fan.

It takes much longer to heat and it can be more expensive even than a gas heater, and it depends on the brand you get and what it costs to install. But this is a great system to use if you're a little more eco-conscious and you you don't want to use gas, you don't want to have to deal with that. Just remember that the heat might not get as hot as you want it in your pool, but it still works really well. It runs a lot more than a than a gas heater, because again it takes longer, but it's a really good alternative, real quick before we continue.

So once you buy it, you have access to the latest and greatest version for life. So because you're watching this video, you can go to swimuniversity.com pool and use the promo code. Video. The third thing you could do is get a solar heater.
Now, a solar heater. What i'm talking about here is you basically have the sun heat up this black piping and the water runs through that, and it heats up naturally by the sun. You can even get solar panels installed on your roof. If you want to send the water up there, it can get really complicated and also very expensive, but it is definitely the most eco-conscious way to heat your pool.

Now it doesn't even matter which pool heating system, you use it, whether you go with any of these or you already have one. What i recommend on top of having a heater, is also having a solar cover, because what happens is let's say you have a gas pool heater if you don't have a solar cover, it's like having a cup of coffee in the thermos and you have the lid Off the whole time, well that coffee is going to get cooler over time, but if you have a lid on it, that coffee will stay warmer longer and you'll get more benefit out of that initial heating process, and this goes for all of them. Gas heat pump, solar heater, doesn't matter if you have a cover on your pool that keeps that heat in any money that you're spending to heat your pool in any of those systems. You're gon na be much more efficient at keeping the heat in your pool.

If i had to pick the best one, i definitely recommend a gas pool heater because it's going to heat your pool up really quickly, but the second one i recommend, if you're more eco-conscious, is a heat pump. I think they're awesome. It kind of works similar to the way a gas heater works, but you don't have to use gas, which is excellent if there's a pool care topic you'd like us to cover in a future video. i would like to use a smaller pump for the heater to run when the big pump is off. can I use a booster pump on the pool side of the filter and draw though the big pump? or should i just get a secondary pool pump plumbed separate from the main pump? Are you in Ottawa ?

Very surprised there are no "dual purpose" pool heating devices. I have always thought a propane fireplace or wood burning chiminea with plumbing to natural pull water through the chimney and let it pour back into the pool would be a neat idea.

Are electric heat pumps noisy? We mindful of our neighbours. We have 21ft round above ground and are looking for the easiest, most cost efficient way to heat the pool. Being in Ontario Canada, we’re not looking to swim year round, we just want to extend our swim season a few weeks and keep the temp more consistent during summer. Thanks.

I guess my only argument with your video is you did not address ongoing costs. My heat pump is MUCH less to run. Our neighbor, before we moved, had a gas heater. It was much cheaper to buy the unit, but the first weekend he used it in CA, cost him $90 to heat the pool. My heat pump has added at the most, $30 to my energy bill. I think a heat pump, depending on your location, is a much better option because of the continuing costs.

I have installed a lot of heat pumps in pools here in Greece. The proper way, installing them somewhere outside. 99% of the pools here, have engine rooms which are indoors. I am wondering if it is possible to install a 9kw heat pump INside an engine room which is quite big (150 square feet) with a 9 feet ceiling. The door of the engine room has straight holes from which air comes naturally inside the room. Will it work? Or will I just get a frozen engine room and no heat in the pool water?

Love our natural gas heater! This morning there’s steam coming off our pool here in northern Montana.

  32. Avataaar/Circle Created with python_avatars Adam Rabinowitz says:

Heat Pumps can be more efficient than a gas heater if the ambient air temp is 70 F or higher. However if you live in a climate where the temperature goes down at night and you want to run your pump at night because electricity costs are lower overnight then you heat pump will run all night and cost you more. I have learned to leave my heat pump on in the day and the pool heats up much quicker and more effeciently.
