This was a service call on a set of reach in freezers that were not working at all, I found the system had a bad circuit breaker and a shorted out drain line heater.

Today, we're working on a set of freezers in the cooks line that aren't working correctly unit for it this place looks familiar. This is the one where I had to do a temp or a line set redo, but it wasn't for this freezer unit. It was for a different one. This is that I had to went to change a coil and then found an underground lines that leak and had to run a new line.
Sir, isn't my best work, but it's what you know. I explained it in the other video. That's what the customer could afford so still works. Just shows you, you know things, don't have to be absolutely perfect.
If I'd have done it differently, I'd ran it on unis. Try you strut, clamps made it straight, but you know it was just a quick slam. Dunk job, that's all they wanted, so can't always be perfect, but anyways back to the job at hand. We've got some cooks, freezers that aren't working properly.
This is it right here, condensing units not running so the first thing we're going to do is start checking voltage. So just go to the time clock there's a breaker panel over here, but I'll just check right here, because this should have power at all times and I've got nothing and that's on one and and that's what I'm on right now. We've got no voltage, so we're gon na open up the breaker panel and check out there. So old-school, breaker panel looks like the best I can tell it says crooks freezer.
So it's one of these two guys right here that one's not tripped, but it flops off real easily. So let's open this guy up and see what's going on so nothing's tripped at the moment we seem suspect but kind of sketchy. Looking interesting, I didn't know they had three-phase I'm here. Why isn't this equipment three-phase? I hate single-phase, I don't like capacitors and stuff, I'm so used to three-phase spoiled kind of okay, so we need to figure out which ones which so this is a crappy situation.
They've got two single pole breakers running a 208 single-phase circuit. It's not right, but it'll work. So it's interesting is. I have no voltage on those at all and I've got three-phase coming into the panel a three-phase so in three-phase so in three phases.
I've got 3 phase coming into the panel, but for whatever reason, I don't have power on either of these breakers to ground, which makes me wonder if we have a bad bus bar there's one leg to ground. There's another lady girls have nothing on these two pens who likes to ground. It's interesting. I don't know the orientation of this panel.
We got 208 on that one checking the other breakers Toit on that one. Everything else is working fine, so all the other breakers are good huh, it's interesting. So what I could do, there's another leg right here, right below that they could test no yeah. So let me pull these things apart.
Let me pull these breakers apart and we'll see what we can find. I think we're gon na have an electrical problem in this panel, so this is so sketchy. There's no ground in this panel there's a neutral which essentially is a ground, but still I hate this kind of stuff as olds go across yeah, there's no ground wire coming up with the main feet, there's only a neutral wire things so outdated, which I mean it's Still gon na work - and it's just you know, there's not a dedicated ground which is just sucks. I imagine there should be so um we've got bad break or something's going on here. I need to pop these breakers off, so I was able. So this is the this line. One is the fee for those breakers actually no line. What is the feed for one of them and I've got power on line one and I've got power.
So it's line one in line three is the feed for those breakers so line. One goes to the top breaker line. Three goes to a bottom breaker and this should create a 208 volt circuit, so I've got line one in line three. So it's not a bus bar problem.
It's a problem in the break or something like that. What I did was I tested. I pulled the wires off the breakers tested them to ground, there's no direct short to ground, but what I'm gon na do is I'm gon na go downstairs and find the main breaker for this sub panel shut it off and then I'm gon na get these breakers Out, I'm a little sketch trying to pull them out when it's hot, because this breaker panels so old, and it's just everything in here sprouted - I don't want it to blow up in my face, plus I'm not digging that no ground wire. I know what they're doing the old-school method of using the conduit as the ground, but I just I don't know it's kind of sketch.
So all right, I'm gon na, go down and find that main breaker for this sub panel and get that shutoff like nothing's labeled. Very well, but it's this one, five, seven and nine. I could see barely in cursive, it says roof equipment panel. So it's a 70 M go up and test power.
Okay, so dad-dad dead, we're dead to all three legs, so I'm gon na get these breakers out and inspect a little bit more. So there doesn't appear to be anything wrong with the busbar and I was able to get this out and it is a double breaker. It just looks like two singles, but there's not that the bar going between the two, so they could individually trip. But it's okay, because it's not three-phase if it was three-phase we'd, have to make sure that they could trip together.
But but there doesn't appear to be anything wrong with a breaker. Besides this crack right here, it's probably hard for you guys to see that it's a big crack going down through there. There you go yeah the breakers, definitely bad. It's definitely all corroded.
It's gon na be an interesting one, because look at this, this is gon na, be hard to find, might have to get an electrician on this one, because this is a very peculiar breaker, so I was able to source this breaker locally there's a breaker place. This is an old cutler hammer breaker it's made by eating now, but it's a little bit different, but it fits it's just a replacement breaker for this thing right here, little 20m. So I got it from a place here in Riverside for your local guys called Western enterprises. They were able they had it in stock, pretty cool little panel shop, I'm gon na show you guys a clip right now inside there they had all their old panels. On the wall, I thought that was pretty interesting. All those little panels that they have is pretty neat. He was telling me that they used that for when people come in to show on the style of panels and whatnot if they can't figure out who made it or whatever. So it's pretty cool so all right! Well, I'm gon na change this thing out and then test everything.
So I shut off mean power. I'm going to test to make sure I don't have power again and then I'll go ahead and change. The breaker put, the you know, hook everything up and then we'll turn on main power, and you know go from there all right, so this style you're gon na hook on the back and pop it in and I verified. We have no power in this panel right now.
Some have these connectors off of this abs in for good break your secure, but turn on power. So with older panels like this, you don't want to turn everything on all at once. So I turned everything off: we're gon na check three-phase power, make sure that the breaker downstairs reset correctly away away choy, so we've got two or three phase: we're going to turn these onto individually, nice and slow that we don't overload, especially on a system, that's old, Giving it time for everything startup, I'm not going to turn this one on yet we're gon na go inspect the electrical a little bit more to make sure there's no other problems before we turn it on tested at the ground to make sure it's not locked the Family is not locked up, hüseyin see any problem, so we're gon na go ahead and fire this guy out go ahead and fire this guy up see what happens. We're gon na watch it for a few minutes and go from there.
So I'm putting my service gauges on this guy. I want to point out the packing on the suction side service valve that packing. If it has the two flat spots and you can fit a wrench on it, you need to loosen it before you actuate this valve. Okay, so, for instance, this one does not have a packing that one does not have a packing that you can loosen, but on the suction side it does.
This will help to prevent leaks. So I suggest you loosen this packing. First, like I did and then you can actuate the service valve. It looks like there's a good purge, my gauges, but yeah, so you always want to loosen that first, okay, so the customer pointed out to me that this dream was busted, but look at this.
It has a dream heater on it, so this could be the reason why the breaker tripped in the first place. I bet you anything. We fish our hands back here. We're gon na find the electrical there's, some water nuts, his cover, pulled off. So here's another thing see those limit switches: they're not connect. Today we're gon na dock, we're gon na replace those two but um. I can't source this pencil heater right now. This is over here.
I'm gon na have to order it. The local suppliers don't have it. So we'll order a new pencil heater, I'm gon na get this put back in these guys are secured, there's no wire sticking out of them sawed off and they must have yanked it out or something so it's safe and then the drain line back on. It's probably gon na ice up the drain pen at any time, but at least they'll have a freezer.
That's operated. Sike glass is clear, we're gon na. Let it run for a little bit test. The defrost then get out of here and order that heater and then redo the linen switches.
When I come back so, as you guys saw in the video that was the restaurant, where I had to run a new line set, there wasn't the condensing unit for it, but that was the restaurant. So it's kind of a business acquaintance of ours. We've known the guy for a very long time, so just try to help them out as much as possible in a situation like that, I might normally just call an electrician. Have them deal with it, but yeah that's a long story but anyways.
I went ahead and found a circuit breaker shop and had the particular circuit breaker when hadn't replaced it for him and got the system operated and then, when I was getting ready to leave, he brought to my attention that the unit had a one of the evaporators. There's two evaporators on that system and one of the evaporators had a broken drain. Nobody showed it to me. The pencil heater was hanging off of it.
So more than likely, my thought is is that when that drain line broke the pencil heater, shorted out and probably tripped the breaker, and it was a really old breaker and it just wouldn't reset - that's my thought again when you're doing this kind of stuff, you got To kind of stop and try to make sense an investigate, you know what caused that breaker to turn off. In the first place he seemed to think it was just turned off, but you know a lot of times in unit end. Users can be confused on whether or not it was tripped or turned off you know, so my thought is is that it was tripped in the first place and when he tried to turn it on it, wouldn't reset, and you know it's bad breaker so went ahead And disconnected and made pencil your wiring safe, so that way at least it can operate more than likely. It's gon na freeze up the drain line again, and it's also at a weird angle, but you know we'll get the the right pencil heater for it.
I got one actually already ordered come into the shop and we'll go back out there and then I'll probably go and replace those limit switches to. I think it's probably been that way for a very long time, for whatever reason, but I'll go ahead and replace those, because I have some at the shop get that taken care of and get that thing copacetic and operating like it should be again. So that's pretty much it catch! You guys on the next one: okay.
Great 📹
That breaker was no good, whether it was good or not, both phases should shut off instantly if there is a a short, one on and one off would damage the equipment it's servicing. Are you in Nepean ?
Double pole, double throw, no service ground is not good. Are you in Ottawa ?
I hope everything grabbed a shot at the right time.
Our country has 415 vac between phases.
MEN Earth or ground wires keep the electrical grid at zero potential to earth.
(Multiple earth neutral systems.)
Otherwise you get stray voltages between buildings and metal objects.
Earth wires also provide alternative path to neutral busbar incase a live wire earths against the metal enclosure allowing the over current protection to operate.
Auckland NZ.
Why does something small like that have a giant Tecumseh reciprocating compressor?? That's a 30000 BTU air conditioner compressor Service area Barrhaven??
Why does a small reach in freezer, have a giant Tecumseh AWG4542EXN reciprocating compressor?
If I shut off the power AND I will be working on the lines, I put a sign over the breaker that I am working on it, so that nobody comes up with the clever idea to turn that breaker back on.
M&M circuit breakers in Rancho Cucamonga. Hard to find breakers, they saved me many times Are you in Orleans ?
Today was my first day brazing thanks to your videos I already knew how to do it!
No wire termination for flex wires?
actually, 2 pole breakers need to be connected together as well
Good fix, as always. FYI, since that was an actual double pole breaker and it says on the side it said "common trip" you need to close both switches at the same time. Since the tie bar was missing and you were only closing one pole at a time you could hear it trip free, that's why it was easy and didn't sound right. Once you pulled it out and opened and closed both poles together it sounded much different, more solid. But, regardless, the breaker was cracked so good call on replacing it. Also not a bad idea to exercise the breakers like you did, but in an old panel like that make sure you're not doing it on a Friday night when the supply houses are closed. I am sure you have shut off a breaker to only have it not close again, I know you know this, just putting that out there for the next guy.
The OCD Electrician's apprentice in me is trying not to pass out…..plz ignore this but have to vent the OCD.. just change the panel it's not safe!! a 200 amp subpanel is only $100 at lowes and if you get the right style you can use the old breakers….. Sorry HAD to put that out there….i know it's not Chris' fault…. Mr. big picture would have changed it if he had found an excuse to justify it to the customer.
Love Western, pulled me out of a jam many times
I have discovered in my travels that breakers can and do wear out. It's just a resettable fuse, but they can corrode over time……
I have to laugh at all the comments about calling an an electrician. Changing, diagnosing a breaker is not brain surgery. Electrical work is a thousand times easier than HVAC.
Interesting you have stranded wire going into the breaker panel – you don’t see that much!
Also we have to deal with this issue constantly due to all of the historic bldgs. However we dont always have to deal with high occupancy bldgs. Like you have to in nyc.
We also have to call an electrician in pa! Doesnt mean I haven't replaced breakers for a good customer!
What kind of van do you drive
Elec chicken if i ever saw one…
On all main p. Or sub. Go side to side n stand to one side not in front Service area Kanata??
That breaker failed from prolonged overheating, you can tell by how the casing dried out and cracked.. that being the case I would’ve taken an amp reading to see what’s going on
GOOD VIDEO ,, THENX
whoever used terminals on the ends of the wire should be strangled… I've repaired many panel fires from just that kind of stupidity, it generates more heat from poor contact than just putting it directly under the screw for which it was intended.
You are right, single phase sucks, 3 phase is best. That panel must have seen better days👋
Bro thanks for all ur work and lessons, I have a quistion, how do you heat ur lunch? When ur out in the field, or you just buy food? I'm about to start working out doors, any advice?
I just came acrossed your channel last week. Really like your vidz so I subed.
Bad bus bar??? LOL…. Bad breaker, still love ya man
Im in the HVAC Union in NYC, technically we have to call an electrician because it's on the panel.
Cutler- Hammer Type CH are common in FL… sold at HD, Lowe's etc.
How often, after you've told a customer that you can't immediately source a part, does a customer say that they need the operating right now and how to you handle a customer that doesn't understand unavoidable delays?
If there equipment was 3 phase how much money they could save in energy in long run. Maybe when they change that crap out nice upgrade or selling point.
I had a main breaker fused together on 1 leg and I couldn’t turn off the power completely. Half the house was hot except 208 appliances. The home owner said at one time the service was struck by lightning. I packed my tools and left and they eventually replaced the service panel and lines to the pole. Set them back 4K. I see that sometimes in the field.
which one causes another failure, pencil heater or circuit breaker? thanks!
Dear Sir, this morning I worked on a Traulsen Freezer, it run short cycles. I replaced Start kids (Potential relay, run capacitor, start capacitor after found bad on run capacitor, potential relay, low to minimum rate of start Cap.. I checked Ohms on compressor 3 terminals seems good C to S = 4.7 Ohms; C to R = 1.9 Ohms and S to R = 6.7 Ohms . When restart, the Freezer operates in Short cycles as before. So what Can I blame to : compressor, Time clock, or temperature control.
I thought it was just around my area people bypasses heater safety’s and DTS. Guess not .! Lol. There everywhere 🙈. 😳. Good video
Saw a guy get knock on his ass from messing with a neutral 🤕🤯
Can you show us how to wired up limit switch please thanks sir
на 13.09 справа две " таблетки" Service area Nepean??
Подскажи назначение датчиков температуры на испарителе?
I cant believe United didnt have that heater for you. They usually always stock that cool stuff. Nice vid!
Does your area allow you to work in a breaker panel? Technically in my area we aren't allowed to. Me personally, if I don't have power to the unit and resetting a breaker doesn't work its electrician time.
Chris what safety glasses do you recommend and also gloves thanks
Not to speak out of turn, but you really should take your ring off before working near any electrical wiring or contacts, especially in that evaporator with the broken heater. Beyond the possibility of arc flash or a spot weld that you might not be able to break, you'll lose your finger if the heat cauterizes the blood vessels and nerves feeding it! Service area Ottawa??
The pain oooooo the pain….. I got shocked by 480 because the owner forgot I was working on the system. So she just turned it on even though I put red tape over it. She said she was sorry, she thought i had left. She has bad memory. The worst shock of my life, but I'm kind of glad it happened. I had a second chance to change my life around. Because now, I locked everything out and remove fuses. I will never take that chance again. To anybody out there that works on electricity everyday, it just takes one sick person to kill or maim you for life. Then under your insurance policy it states did you lock it out. They look at it after you died. NO!!!! So your policy does not apply. NOW YOUR FAMILY ARE SO DOOMED, NO LIFE INSURANCE. Look at your insurance fine print it's in there. The only Clause that you might be able to get around if you locked out a other source by accident. Please put lockout on you videos to help are young apprentices to remember. You could save someone's life just for a few seconds. Most guys have had very mild shocks. They really do not understand how bad it can be. Imagine losing the use of your hands. Guys in this trade treat it like an art, and it is it's kind of fun. But so so dangerous. Water, oil, gas, etc…….. all mixing with high voltage. The complacency bug will bite you. If you cannot see the disconnect from where you're working lock it out remove the wires or the fuses don't trust anybody even your partner. We all have bad days…………… Are you in Kanata ?
Another good vid Bud … Lol … Much appreciated …
