This was a messed up service call to say the least, it was pouring rain and I made an electrical repair but in the end it all worked out.

This video is brought to you by Sportlin. Quality, integrity and tradition. Happy Sunday night it is. Uh I don't know.

Seven o'clock Five o'clock somewhere in there I Lost track of time. We got an exhaust fan not working. It's raining outside, so they say it's pouring water in the building. It's not pouring, it's dripping down into the exhaust ducts.

but this whole fan is trashed. Okay I mean everything's busted on it. Um, that looks not good. Conduit's busted.

Let's uh, switch is currently off. Let's get the top pulled off. see what's going on here? Well before I even pull the top up. look at this.

Follow the conduit down that's broken. It's just raining inside of it. So I bet you this is all full of water. That's lovely.

Let's open this box up and have a look in there. All right. Got the cover off. let's see what it looks like in here and peel this off.

Actually not as bad as you think it would be. Wow, Really? not that bad at all? Huh? Yeah, that's not bad. I'd have thought that had been full of water. Go figure.

huh? There's a little bit in there in about. ooh, that kind of looks like it's burnt down in there. Huh? Maybe not all right. Oh oh yeah, yeah, yeah, don't you know I can see uh, copper wires right there where it's rubbed out.

So yeah, I bet you they single phase the motor. Um I didn't tell you that when I walked up the first thing I did was went to the motor starter panel and I noticed that the Motor. starter was tripped. so I did not reset it I just left it tripped and wanted to come up here and investigate.

So looks like we're gonna have to fix a wire right there. Um, all right, we've got no power. I checked it to ground too so we're good. Yeah, look at that busted that wire right off.

So I'll go ahead and make a quick fix on this and then uh, we'll have to come back when it's not raining and replace the whole conduit. Fix all that too. This is turning into a a giant mess. I tried to break off a piece of conduit to cut it shorter to splice the wire and it's just breaking.

It just keeps breaking like like it broke right there. So I could have run down to my van and hope that I have some conduit. I did not have conduit but I was able to make this one work. I just put a new fitting there.

a new fitting there. This is all temporary trying like my freaking tools are getting ruined right now. Um, the motor doesn't smell burnt so at this point the belt's tight. somewhat close enough we're gonna run.

Uh, put the lid back on, reset the motor starter and hope it's going in the right direction. If not, we'll have to reverse it. This is all fun in the rain. I Made sure I put the wire nuts so that way they weren't filling up with water.

See what happens? Okay, should be going clockwise and it is. That's the right direction. so let's run it and see what happens. Seems to be doing good.

Everything seems okay. Let's put the lid on. protect it from the rain. Let's get a current on this guy.
Shouldn't be more than like three amps. Maybe my gas. Oh man. you gotta love using this stuff in the rain, right? Two amps? That doesn't seem bad.

Let's make sure we've got current on all three legs. Yeah, in order to get current on all three legs I Got to put down my phone. All right. it's all back together.

Got the cover put on. it's running. seems decent. They need several exhaust fans.

This one's all busted up too. They're complaining about water. Well, all the screw things are, uh, you know, wallowed out and same thing on this one. so we'll be coming back.

This whole Fan's trash will be uh, sizing up these exhaust fans of replacement when it's not raining. so that's it for tonight. Well I am back. still kind of raining, but I think I got a little break enough time to go through this exhaust fan.

It looks a little different during the day when it's not raining, right? You can see my handiwork last night. I Just put a new fitting here and a new fitting there and just carefully bent the conduit to try to prevent it from breaking to get us through the night. But you can see this exhaust fan I Mentioned last night that it was trash. They're also complaining of dripping water downstairs.

Well, I mean there's just spots like there's wallowed out holes right here. The whole fan itself is just destroyed clear. see the grease spouts completely broken off. like just everything about this.

Look at this fan right here. tops wallet out. same thing this thing's Just Junk These fans are in bad shape. I Think this one has recently been replaced I think but we're going to go through.

check out all the fans, tighten all the belts, see what we need to get a replacement going on this guy. You can also see this thing has like a vibration to it. This box is almost busted off the side of the unit. The whole fan has just got this shaking going on.

Um, it's just completely compromised inside. So I'm not changing a fan just because it's greasy. I'm looking at everything. okay.

the grease spouts completely broken off. That's a huge thing causing it to leak grease everywhere. So that's the main issue. But we're just gonna go through everything on this guy.

It's not fun working in the rain, but it has to be done. especially when they have an exhaust fan down because these exhaust fans are what keeps their building running. And oftentimes with these newer, more efficient restaurants, they don't have as much redundancy built into the hoods, meaning that if one exhaust fan goes down, the other ones don't really make up the difference because they're You know they're reliant on every single fan. In the past, you would see exhaust hoods that would have major redundancy built in, so if you lost one, it wasn't a big deal.

but it's not so much that these days. Now this particular customer, the equipment was just beat down. I got it going that night, I was able to get it operational and then I came back out the next day which you guys saw and I actually got them to approve one two, three exhaust fans. The Old: the three old mushroom fans are all being replaced.
uh, and they already approved it, they're ordered. It'll be a few weeks before we get them, but I'm sure there'll be a video about that too. But yeah, you know it's not always. uh.

At the most ideal times that we get these service calls, it's not always perfect. You know my tools. they get wet. I Had to spend a bunch of time drying them off making sure everything was good, but that's just how it works.

I Really appreciate you guys making it to the end. I I Have to ask you all a favor and please do me a favor if you guys subscribe to this channel. If you don't subscribe, please please please consider subscribing. Okay, because there's There's a a ton of people that watch that are not subscribed.

But please turn on notifications right now. Uh, I've been going back and forth with YouTube but we're struggling right now because YouTube Doesn't Remind people the way that they used to. If you don't subscribe and you don't turn on notifications, then they don't show it in your feed anymore. And I get countless emails from people saying YouTube stop showing me your videos.

Well, it's because you don't have no I mean not not all of you, but a good majority of you don't have notifications turned on. And I'm guilty of this too because I watch YouTube channels a lot where I watch a channel so much that it just shows up in my feed. But then if I'm not subscribed the moment that you miss a day or two all of a sudden, it doesn't show it in your feed anymore. So please consider subscribing to the channel, turning on notifications and sharing the videos with your friends.

Please help the channel to grow. I'd much much appreciate it. Okay, thanks so much. remember to be kind to one another and we will catch you on the next one.

Okay.

Guess what, you are showing up in my feed again and I don't have any notifications on. Notifications alerts come up on my phone and they drive me nuts. It's obviously some sort of algorithmics. Are you in Barrhaven ?

Video is great. Happy to(And have for few years now) subscribe. Always(nearly) watch to the end.
Will never turn on notification as all it does is spam everything. Videos will be watched when I have time, could be an hour, could be a few days.
Getting notification just makes me annoyed. 'Look! Here is a video you can't watch for hours/days'. I don't want to know there is new videos until I click on the 'Subscriptions' tab.

  5. Avataaar/Circle Created with python_avatars Scorpion_Tazz says:

i personally dont turn on notifications but i do subscribe. but i have a host of reasons for that . mainly due to me pulling up my subscribe feed every night and listening to everything from the past 24 hours that im subscribed to. Many people forget that there is actually a recommended feed and a subscribed feed.

Lack of preventative maintenance, or grease cleaners being too rough? Or is this the acidic food restaurant, so accelerated damage? Service area Orleans??

I learn so much from this channel that I subscribed from the first video I watched. I was in the trades for a few years before being laid off and moved on to worse things. I wish I would have stuck it out but that's the hand you play and you don't always win. I get comfort over learning something I wanted to do as an apprentice electrician. I was told to broaden my horizon with my skills because one day I might be plunging out an old ladies toilet to installing video surveillance equipment and computer network cable install.

Sorry dude. I would have done a quicker fix. than what you did. And came back when weather was better. I got lit up once. By a bare wire. While I was wet. Not again. I am not going to endanger my life for anybody. But I did buy one of those magnetic umbrellas. Works great.

Nothing like a good service call in the rain, I know them all too well here in oregon

  10. Avataaar/Circle Created with python_avatars David Null says:

The junction box that was there could have been better installed. The box used the bottom and the top openings for the plastic conduit, that didn't work well, the stress caused the conduit to eventually break. A better approach is to use a junction box with two holes on the bottom (even if you turn the box on its side), HomeDepot has several outdoor boxes that will work, 2-gang are much better, and PVC is better – double box, gasket and cover are about $11 retail. In a situation like this, Never run the *looped* flexible conduit vertically or out the side, run it out the bottom in a gentle loop up to the fan – the wires and conduit will last much longer.

I think part of the issue with, especially recently, poor view count might be because it's what I call Apple Season. Or trech release season in general.
So the algo is going to recommend iPhone, iPad, iMac, Macbook content to everyone, and not HVACR content.
I have subscribe set, and it looks like my notifications are set to "Personal". I see all your videos in my feed, although not always at the front page.
And if I can't watch one right away I'll throw it onto Watch Later lest YouTube do that thing where it disappears forever the next time I refresh.

    Thanks for another great upload.
