Curious what your guys's policy is on r290. This guy has a leaking evaporator coil inside, so i put it all back together and then i permanently disable it i'm going to put the cord behind the back panel, so they can't uh operate it because i don't want the liability. You guys doing the same thing or you guys, topping them off and getting them going.

We do the same. Shut it down and get factory parts only.

Sounds like a good idea. Can you use a heated diode to check for that Are you in Ottawa ?

lol is there really such a thing?
    Who is topping off r290?
you’re not even allowed to have access valves so really it’s impossible

Personally, I don't. I got into it with a "senior" tech. He no longer does service. Hes more of a "tech support" and admin for billing. I work for a small family owned HVAC/R (mostly refrigeration). Anyways, we got this long time customer of almost 10 years. They had an out of warranty True freezer (r290) that had a micro evap coil leak. I disabled It, when I got back to the shop my "senior" tech asked why I just didn't top it off to keep them going until they get a new evap.
Verbatim "I'm not gonna do that shit. The unit is 2 feet away from the grill. I'm not gonna be liable for that."
Senior tech: "well I think you should've gotten them up and running. They're a long time customer."
It went on to me cussing him out infront of the entire office staff. I said more stuff and I almost got fired that day. 🤣🤣

Wouldn’t you loose the whole charge anyway putting service ports in to top off? At that rate why not just wait till you replace the evap that way you only have to buy refrigerant once. Also as a tech I wouldn’t want the liability of a flammable gas leak anyway

If its inside an enclosed space, thats pretty sketch, but a ventilated leak doesnt increase the risk of the system at all. The only risk from flammable refrigerants is catastrophic failure where all the gas vents at once, or a small leak in a completely enclosed space that stays closed for long enough.
If its a good customer who really needs that thing, maybe offer to fill it up with 422 or something along those lines, most of the time you can dial in a replacement gas to the point where it kinda works for a while, just playing around with the amount.

With a leak, never a top off. We always remove from the area and tag it, to make sure somebody doesn’t try to do something “smart” with it

Nope..shut it down. Too big of a liability. Great move!
