This was a service call on a Traulsen reach in cooler that was too warm, I found that the unit had a bad compressor and the customer decided to replace the cooler rather than repair it.

This video is brought to you by spoiling quality integrity and tradition. We've got a Charleston region here, not working right, bamboo drum. I hear funny sound, so we're gon na get this cover pulled off and we will get that back over Olaf sooo, pretty sure we they're going to back presser of that, starting because so qualified check the starting of opponents. First, coverall power disconnected pull this apart and they will disconnect the two wires.
One of my start capacitor and pull the starter capacitor off you check, so that overloads is reset. You guys heard that then we'll take the overload off and home out the compressor terminals. It's kind of within range is supposed to be 189 227, so the next thing we're gon na do is I don't see any damage to the overload, but I'll temporarily grab a three on one and see if we can get the compressor to start. If we can so I'm not typically a fan of bullying, one start kids, but I will use them to test to see if I can get the compressor running temporarily and then get the factory starting components.
It works in this situation, it's easier for me to grab one of these. Instead of a compressor, analyzer compressor analyzer indicate you cumbersome that thing's, cheap and small, throw it on jump it. You know so we're just gon na wire, it a little quick and then not buy this guy up but, like I said, I tested these these posts right now and they all come out to be pretty decent, so they pretty much two of them compressors locked up There restroom so we've got 120 going to the compressor you can't just assume, as if that compressor. This is a sealed system, so we have to put service ports on next, so we can see if people have new refrigerator it might be completely flat.
No pressure controls or anything like that. I obviously need to still figure out the flow in my van, because I end up with this pile of stuff right here, even though I have all the room, so I'm gon na have to figure something better out like I, you know when I posted my video. I said it's not complete, so we'll still figure it out, but I just find myself being lazy and putting stuff here when you open the door. What I came out here for is still trying to figure out where I put everything to so.
It must be over there cool, so we have standing pressure, that's a plus so we'll go ahead and close this down and then, when we change the compressor, we'll get rid of this input access fittings right there. So I only use these just to do a quick test and I don't even need to put on the high side, because it's got pressure in this there's no valves or anything so and it's not running so there's nothing else. I can do and I'll make sure that my quote, I tell them there's no way of knowing what caused it to go bad. So that way we can diagnose when we get here.
So I will tell you that we are gon na change. The hot gas condensate meter also, even though the system still has refrigerant those, are notorious believe yeah, so we're gon na change that when we have the compressor out just out of precaution, it's a real, simple, easy fix when you've got. Although I have known a fan of these Alko Emerson expansion valves, are there nothing about problems for me, so we might change that to go ahead and order that with the compressor, we have no idea. What caused this compressor to go bad and we know it's not out of gas, so yeah we're probably gon na change that bad boy out all right. This one was a reaching cooler that wasn't working properly and when I arrived, you saw the box was in the 70s and the compressor was not running okay. You can do a lot before you actually put your your gauges or your meter to the system just by using your senses, and you know, even though it was loud in the restaurant, I could hear the the distinct sound of the compressor trying to start and just Internally being locked up and then going off on internal overload, so I kinda already had a hunch before I got started but still went through all the trouble shooting steps of testing the starting components. You know testing the continuity of the windings and the compressor and then inevitably deciding that the compressor was bad by putting on a temporary three-in-one start kit, so found that the unit had refrigerant in it, obviously, okay. So that was a good sign and then you saw the way that I go through troubleshooting steps by looking at you know, just just evaluating everything and saying: okay, what caused this compressor to go bad? What could potentially cause the compressor to go bad? The emerson expansion valves, i tend to see a lot of problems with and wanted to go ahead and replace that, because we had refrigerant, we had good starting components.
So what else in that system could have caused that compressor to go bad? It could have just been a fluke or it could have been an expansion valve. Maybe that was flooding back to the compressor and ruined the valves who knows okay and unfortunately, we're never gon na know, because once I gave the customer the list of problems and gave him a quote, they decided to go and replace the entire region versus repairing it. So I had no no resolution on that. One: okay, we just you know, gave him everything we we knew what was going on and they made the decision to go and replace it.
So I want to say thank you guys so very much for taking the time to watch these videos. I say it all the time, but I really do truly mean it. Okay, I really appreciate your guys's feedback and whether it be negative or positive feedback. I really appreciate it all, because the negative helps me to grow helps me to change the way that I do things.
I don't know everything some of you guys know more than I do so. Some of you guys give me tips like hey. You should have done it like this, and I and I really appreciate that stuff. So please continue to give me your feedback, good or bad. Let me know what you guys think, okay and other than that. We will see you guys on the next one.
Your a badass bro. Keep making shit cold. Great vids
Came across a traulsen cooler and the Compressor keeps short cycling. Pressures look good in the short time that it runs. I found that the cabin sensor and the discharge sensor was bad. I change those and the error code went away but he compressor keeps short cycling. The next thing thatโs a head scratcher is the door sensor says the door is open and the door is not open. Kinda lost I this one.

Everyoneโs truck looks like that especially during busy season Service area Orleans??
I had my department buy me a few of these 3-N-1 hard start kits for this very same purpose. I like to use them to isolate the compressor from the starting components. They were throwing away refrigerators at work because no one knew how to test them at least electrically except for me. A stainless steel fridge that retailed for $1700 new was almost destined for the junkyard but I was able to find a defective PTC starting device which cost $67 at APC to replace. Small domestic units are good units to learn the basics on. Are you in Orleans ?
either low voltage or high voltage makes compressor god bad.
Nice toasty outlet back there! Service area Ottawa??
Well, I appreciate you taking the time and putting in the effort in making these videos. It's not just a great resource, but it helps to see a fellow technician going through the same crap. Makes the trade more of a community. Service area Kanata??
Whats the big deal about using 3N1s? I have seen them used and they are still on equipment years later and still working.
Chris, is that you doing the voice over for Sporlan? I looked for there link in your notes for this video.
every day is school day Thank you
Good job..I feel like it is very useful if you explain the concept of the troubleshooting in little detail along with causes and actions to be taken. I know there are a lot of experienced people here but for new buds it might be very useful. Thanks and much appreciated
Hi from England
Just wanted to say thanks for the videos I've gained some great knowledge from them…and keep them coming:)
Wtf is a compressor analyzer ๐ณ I've never even heard of that. You mean mega ohm meter?
Really Great Job from a colleague from Amsterdam Holland I watch Channel all the time and I'll earn a lot from you Sometimes It's Little difficult Because you measure with other pressure and temperature
I have a bad txv in a freezer. Same style. I put one in same issue. What expansion valv do you recommend?
Have you worked on taylor soft serve machines? Cant find any repair / diagnostic manuals. Are you in Barrhaven ?
you need a hot chick on the live feed part. LOL
I am freaking 14 but you've taught me so much about HVAC that I do not know what to do with it… Thanks Service area Nepean??
Great work.
Thank you for taking the rime to share and explain troubleshooting.
๐๐๐๐๐
Why you don't like 3 in 1 ?
how many hours to fix all that ? 5 ?
Im a aircon technician and u want to be a HVAC tech Are you in Kanata ?
Love the van talk. Itโs such a huge part of our job and efficiency. Not Keeping a tight van has been a horrible weakness of mine.
I have been watching your videos for a while now, and I am still impressed with how your methods and basic practices go beyond the HVACR trade. I continue to watch and try to absorb ways that I can improve from you as much as I can in how I troubleshoot in my trade.
Does any of your equipment use a slide? Or is it on-off?
compressor thinks it's an old sewing machine, printer. stock ticker or type-writter with a fast secretary lol
Nice video
Iโm 16 and I collect electric motors and other air conditioner parts

I donโt work on anything like that but I still love watching ya and learning ๐ keep up the good work.
75 degrees and sunny today here in Brookfield WI. Dew point around 50 degrees. Just right. T-storm season is upon us. Had some daisies already. Oh… Your anger is just misplaced frustration. Simplify your life and discover the things that truly mean the most to you and live for those reasons.
chris , as Airways, great work buddy ๐keepm coming
It's like the refrigeration cycle. You teach us invaluable lessons. Other tech's teach you different options. Which in turn, teaches us more invaluable lessons. Lovin' it!
What's compressor analyzer?
I didn't see you purge the fan motor with nitrogen or pull a proper vacuum on the blade….I'm calling the YouTube police….you also didn't stick you booty and shake it on the capacitor..it discharges it properly….I would know…I'm a YouTuber and part of the police on here….I would imagine that your going to run a water loop around the new one for maximum youtubing official bussinesses….I'd imagine…om looking forward to a video about how to ohm out the rubber feet to the disconnect on the compressor…it's a rare check..only the best technicians are applying it…super rare…like a julius handy eating pancakes at the habadashery factory..just as rare as the time I was able to fly a kite without atmopsheric pressure… YEAH I'm pretty cool they tell me online
I think that a compressor going bad on a fully working cooler with a somewhat clean condenser and fan, it's mainly because of the compressor itself. the owners might just had bad luck on this reach-in.
Thanks for the video. How often do you end up changing compressors on these small units? It seems everyone just want to through it out and buy new these days. Are you in Ottawa ?
Good vid but you should always check your voltage also those 3 in1 start kits only have a start cap rated at 88 mfd I would bet that compressor calls for a much higher mfd good vids bud
Down here in Florida we have a lot of power issues where we get dirty power from the grid , that has killed a lot of compressors down here
I get locked up compresors all the time. Also Ive learned a couple more stuff from your videos thankyou for taking your time to make this videos public it really helps a lot.
Nice job
Awesome video
Thank you for sharing it's a very helpful video
Don't you like to check these compressors starting them directly with wires? Line to Common, neutral to Run and a little tap to the Start with neutral to simulate the start relay. (I said neutral because it's the mono-phase 230 VAC system we have here).
That's smart using the start kit for testing. Probably what it was actually meant for honestly.
Hi , Chris , great vid as always .
Couple questions if I may :
_ I've never heard of a compressor analyser , could you if possible make a vid on them one of these days
_ if the system doesn't have any pressure control , couldn't it theoretically start and run even with no refrigerant at all , until the compressor burns out ?
_ how to test the starting components ( I'm not sure how to do it , other than ohming the contacts and check it does have continuity where it's supposed to , so I'm trying to learn how)
_ and last : are the pinch off tools reusable , or does the needle not pierce properly once it's been used , or is the gasket not tight anymore
Thank you so much again , I really need to get better man, it sucks to suck at my job ๐ !
Does anyone ever accuse you of guessing and checking when you want to replace multiple parts?
Do you charge them for the diagnosis,
woah that van is a mess. maybe a video of cleaning it up and organizing??
Literally just got done lookin at one of those! Great vid!
