This was a return visit for a walk in cooler that went down the previous night, I replaced the disconnect, contactor, defrost clock and cleaned the evaporator coils.
We had a service call late last night on the walk-in cooler. We've got the walk-in freezer condenser here and the walk-in cooler condenser over there. You can see. We've got some hail damage on that guy too, but it's not that big of a deal well.
Last night. It was actually yesterday afternoon they called us about four o'clock and they said that they're walking cooler was at 56 degrees by the time we got a technician out here. This is all the way out in Barstow California, so this is about two hours from our shop. By the time we've got a technician out here.
What we found was that there was an electrical short on the control circuit that wasn't allowing the system to come on. So we repaired the short and then we found some other issues. We found that the unit has got a bad electrical, disconnect, it's not making contact correctly and the knife is not sliding back in when the when the disconnect is. You know, closed turned back on.
We also found that the evaporator coils were very dirty, so what I'm gon na do today is I'm going to double-check the diagnosis on the disconnect double-check the electrical repair from yesterday, and then I'm gon na go through the system and completely evaluate it. Clean up the evaporators, if necessary and I'll see, if I can take you guys alone, I went ahead and pulled the cover off the disconnect. I had checked some numbers before when it was running and everything looked good before, because we had manually closed the disconnect yesterday. So I didn't really have any voltage drops.
I did have a temperature difference across the fuses online to 76 degrees on the top of the fuse 79 on the outlet, but everything else was good, but this disconnect is not making good contact and what's happening. It's got some corrosion going on inside where these knives. This is the blade and it goes up into there and it's not making good contact up in there and there's some corrosion. So what actually happens is when you try to turn the disconnect back on look at where the knives are.
They stop right there and they don't make contact. So you have to go downstairs. Turn the breaker off manually force those shut, that's what we had to do. Last night, to get it going, but even still that'll cause a problem, because it's not making good contact and more than likely what's wrong, is there's a sand all stuck up here in the mechanism and that Springs there's something stuck up in this mechanism right here.
It's not allowing it to slam itself shut, but I'm gon na go ahead and replace this disconnect and then we'll continue to diagnose further so far, everything else is looking good with the condensing unit. I got the disconnect replace watch out on these things, because what I actually did, if you notice you, can over tighten these lugs and I actually broke it. I was able to get an electrical fitting safely on there to where it still made good contact, but yeah. These things they can't take any real pressure, really not a super fan of these. It's a Siemens disconnect, but my favorite anyway I'll get that the other thing I wanted to point out was this compressor contactor, I'm not here for this, but I can already see some of that white dust coming out of there. I'm gon na pull that apart and inspect the contactor points. I can pretty much guarantee you it's going to be time to replace that contact or two, and the other thing that was pointed out to me from yesterday is that this time clock really is jammed up. Like it's, it's full of sand, so I'm gon na place that time talk to all this before I even turn the thing on, but it's just you know things you can catch.
It's definitely time to replace that guy. It's gon na be hard to see this on camera, but it's all pitted out on the points up in there and then I don't even need to get my meter out. You can see the burning the arcing that had been going on inside that contactor, especially on that line to middle look. This is just the comer so with I don't even need to get my meter out to be able to know that it's time to replace that guy and the fact that it has this little c1 sticker on.
There actually tells me that this is a factory contactor. It's never been replaced and if we go over to the serial number of this unit is from 2008. So it's time this things aren't plugged, but they are pretty dusty. I can still see light through them.
These are the eve apps there's quite a bit of dust on there, so I'm going to get brushing on these. So unit has two coils. When you're cleaning these things you want to be conscious of the dirt. That's gon na fall off the evap coil.
I've got this pan down here to catch most of it, because you're always going to get a little bit more. Then you also want to be conscious of the dirt. That's gon na fall into the drain, pan that you can't get out, so I'm gon na flush. This guy with a hose and I'm all done, the other coil.
This was pretty dirty. You know, sometimes, when you're working in these things, you got to kind of learn to be an acrobat a little bit better, but I brushed it and then now I'm just flushing. It and flushing the drain, because there was a bunch of stuff that went into the pan that I couldn't get out. So I just want to make sure we flush enough hot water to push all that stuff through the drain.
Evaporators all cleaned up, gon na get ready to put the unit back together, refrigerant pressures, we're fine sight, glasses, clear, there's, no reason to believe that it's low on refrigerant as far as the headmaster goes or the winter charge, so we're good to go so all together. We change the disconnect compressor, contactor defrost time clock, went ahead and added some defrost into the system. So basically it's defrosting every four hours and then in the middle of the night they do a 45-minute defrost. The rest of them are 15 minutes time. Clocks. I'm sorry! Defrost compressor, contactor, sorry fresh contactors back in clean the evaporators up and everything else is looking pretty good. It's always good. You know just to kind of try to take care of the roof.
I went ahead and marked all the equipment it wasn't marked when they got here. Just because I knew it, it is ice machine, ACS, walk-in freezer. I even marked the exhaust fans so that way, when another technician comes in, they know exactly what exhaust fans they are with the restaurants names I'm gon na bring up to them that their their ACS are looking a little dirty. It gets really really sandy and windy out here in Barstow, see open desert all around us, so I always like to bring to their attention that everything is dusty and needs to be cleaned, so right now we're in the month of April.
So it's going to be getting into cooling season. You know basically next week for out here and in the summertime they can regularly reach about a hundred and twenty hundred and twenty five out here. So it's very important that these ACS are in the most tip-top shape, especially since they're two hours away from our shop, so can't always drop everything to come out for an a/c service call, even though that's what they want us to do. So we try to keep them in good shape whenever we're out here.
So that way it doesn't turn into like last night, where we have to send a technician out here. You know late in the afternoon, so that's pretty much it all right, guys things! I wanted to bring up number one really pay attention to your climate and, where you're at not that it should be any different anywhere else. But we need to be extra extra, careful to make sure we have screws in every single panel, especially out here in my location, because it gets very windy. And the last thing that we want is a lawsuit because one of our panels blew onto the freeway and hit a car or hit someone in the head.
That's the one thing, and the second thing is especially for you younger guys that don't really think about this. Yet, when you're working, you need to think about yourself, you need to think about your body and how the way that you work can affect yourself, especially once you get older, I'm getting older, I'm very concerned about my knees, my back and my skin as corny as It sounds I'm in Southern California, it's sunny, you know 95 % of the year and we really do got to worry about skin cancer as corny as a sounds sunscreen or some kind of a hat. I wear a hat with a head scarf. I look like an idiot, but I really don't care because I don't want to look all cool and worry about that stuff and then end up with skin cancer.
Ten years down the line. Okay same thing: knee protection, kneeling pads, don't lift anything heavier than you should and lift the right way when you're young, your body is forgiving once you hit 30, it stops forgiving you and it really starts hurting you, and I know that there's guys that are older Than me, I'm thirty-five that can attest to that. You know the guys in their 40s and 50s. They'll really preach that to you. You know it's easy to think that you're Superman and that you can just you know, power through it. I I'm still guilty of doing it. Sometimes, where I power through lunch, don't eat all day and then you know I don't eat breakfast as it is so then, by dinnertime you know I haven't eaten anything all day that stuff's not good for your body. You really got to think about your body, see I wear a stupid headscarf.
I look like an idiot, but you know what I really don't care because I have a shaved head. I have to worry about my head getting burnt. I have to worry about my skin. Getting burnt at the tops of my ears getting burnt, especially for someone with the complexion that I have.
It can really really start to affect you. So you know. Yes, you do want to be Superman to your company. You do want to be that technician that can fix everything, but you also want to be there tomorrow.
So working through the pain now worrying about your body isn't going to, let you be there tomorrow, just a little corny advice:.
Great video
Hey, Brother – thanks for what you do…
I'd recommend sunscreen even with the scarf, hat, and Easy Up…the reflection from the roof decking is just as bad for directing UV onto your skin. Nothing is sexier than a skin cancer nose that got cut off at 45, and we see it here in Southern AZ, too.
And always think of the next guy when doing a call, because that guy may very well be you!
I'm not ready for 35 yet, I'm only 30.
Your words are so true I feel it. Still I am 25 😊
“Let’s build in the desert. It should be fine.” You look like a man that works hard. Your body is the most important thing you own. Skipping meals is fine. Fasting is good for you.
Thanks for the PSA at the end man, you are one of very few that seem to care about skin cancer
I have a broad brimmed hat with an attached scarf to protect my neck that I always wear for outside work. Got to protect the body that you have as you can't call Grainger and have them overnight you a new one.
Y'all are lucky it aready cooling seeing out here y'all have a late start
Siemans …..UGGGG junk
I spy a Tesla supercharger
One thing I've discovered that can save your knees in a pinch if you don't have knee pads, is put a piece of cardboard or two on the ground to put your knees on. In my 17+ years as a grocery clerk I called it my "poor man's knee pads." Not perfect, but it can definitely save your knees from certain doom in the long run and still feels much better than a bare concrete floor.
Corny Health Advice? No! It is very sensible advice. Pay Heed, folks. As for looking like an "idiot", no you don't. You look like someone who is aware of the sun's killer rays. Very sensible, and sensible people will appreciate you all the more for that. Who cares what idiots think?
Great advice I am mid 40s service engineer 20 years + ankles knees hips and lower back all worn
Big Picture Diagnose
You look a bit like lorance of arabia.
Your videos have really helped me with diagnosing air compressors and vacuum pumps better. I work on dental equipment and the pumps have similar components that fail. I definitely notice much more now. Thanks.
I been looking at ur videos from Indianapolis Indiana what u said is right law suits health are the two things to be careful no joke
I want my baby back baby back ribs … Enjoy your channel Are you in Barrhaven ?
Bro..love the advise at the end more tha. Anything in this video. I'm guilty of powering through and my back has been hurting and knees.. I needed to hear that. Thanks.

Wow California is just gorgeous as much as Florida which is where I am.
great health advice.
10-4. Thanks for your advise. Service area Orleans??
That is so true! First time a tech mentioned body protection I've been doing this kinda work for 20 years. We're carrying our tool bag, nitrogen bottle, recovery tanks, vacuum pumps, ect. Up and down the roofs and working in all types of weather conditions being exposed to the elements. It is important to wear proper gear, sunscreen, knee pads, back support, sunscreen and plenty of water. 👍🏼👍🏼👍🏼
Not corny advice at all. Great advice for everyone! Nice job!
What a savage environment with sandstorms and grit on equipment. The designer should seal the electrical compartment but since everything needs cooling ventilation a losing battle. Just more frequent trouble. Great vids. Think about this, on a roof you are in Iraq with low humidity and high heat, even dehydration a problem.
Perhaps another thing to consider is the sudden change in temperature, from a WI freezer to a summer hot roof. Good video as always. Are you in Ottawa ?
Great advice sir🤗🤗🤗 Are you in Kanata ?
Ur number 1 sir
You’re an amazing mentor, great tech with amazing advice. Keep it up brother 👌🏼
Allways enjoy your work… not a fan of the Disconnect fix…. really need to replace it
If you use a stuffing gland on the incoming cables, and have an airtight box it stops sand, dust, debris and moisture getting in, once it's in it is like having grinding paste on the moving parts…
That personal care advice at the end was far more important than the tech segment. I preach that to the youngsters constantly.
Right? We take care of the rest of our tools, take care of your number one tool-your body. Service area Nepean??
Looking cool by not wearing a hat/scarf/skin protection is just STUPID!
You only have one body and ya gotta take care of it! The hat and scarf just shows that you are looking out for yourself and trying to take care of yourself… nothing corny about that! Are you in Orleans ?
iv got short hair as well im 54
It's called fasting….. and for some people keto… Not a bad thing to do if you do it right. can help you lose weight and not feel bogged down all day. I get whatcha meed tho Service area Kanata??
Thanks for all your good tips and helps. I saw 25 Videos of your Channel Sins friday and i am no ac man, i am electician, but i learnd a lot Little Things to make life easyer and safer. Sorry for my Bad english. 🙈🙊
What percentage of the time do these restaurants hook you up with free food? Seems like a cheap investment for maybe a price break when the bill is due.
I enjoy your comments on safety but you forgot about hearing protection, hearing aids are expensive and ear plugs are cheap insurance down the road.
Oh man well said, 30 is a magic marker for when things start becoming way less forgiving on your body!
As a layman I have to ask, why don't all these things have gaskets in a sandy and windy environment? Like why is sand able to get into the defrost time clock enclosure at all?
I laughed at you comment about having to be an acrobat. Somewhere I have a picture taken by the kitchen manager of me laying stretched out on the top shelf in the walkin freezer with my head between the electrical side of the evaporator and the box wall. I was replacing the defrost termination switch and I could only look at it with one eye. Thankfully I could tolerate the cold pretty well as it was a toasty -10 in there at the time. Service area Barrhaven??
NEMA 3R or 12 or even 1X rated disconnect may help with dust since it has a gasket and no prepunched openings.
Thank you
I had fellow coworkers that would crack jokes about the headscarf i would put on all the time on the roof. I used to live in the nyc area and we get pretty hot summers as well, maybe not 120 dessert hot but that radiation on your neck is horrible. The days where I wouldn't wear the scarf or forget it at the truck my neck would be purple by the end of the work day. I would wear long sleeves all year round regardless of how hot it was. }Protects you from burns and touching something by accident. Also as soon as I'm on the job I would wear those black mamba latex gloves. Gotta keep them hands clean too you know. Charge it to the company truck stock lol
