What is freon? Well, basically, fruit. Yeah, just give me one. Second, what is freon? Well, I'm glad you asked believe it or not, but one of the most common problems with a/c units are refrigerant leaks. The problem is: is that, when these occur, most Tech's will simply tell you that your system needs to be charged with freon, but what does that mean and what even is freon? Well, that's what we're gon na be talking about today.
What we need to understand is that freon is simply another word for refrigerant. It's a brand name that encompasses a large number of refrigerants, such as r12, r22, r11, and the list goes on, so I'm always being told to keep things organized. So, let's split this video into two parts: first, we are going to be looking at the timeline of freon in the different iterations of this refrigerant and, secondly, we're going to be looking at what this means for the rest of the world. So we'll start over here, the first form of freon ever made was r12.
It was made in order to find a non-toxic non-flammable replacement for what was being used as a refrigerant things like ammonia, toxic gases, things that were very harmful now, eventually, r12 was banned. From being used as a refrigerant, due to the fact that it contains CFCs, in other words, chloro fluoro DFCS, were especially the concern due to the effects people believed to had on the environment. It didn't take long, though, for those Environmental Protection Agency guys to snatch up our twelve away from us. This caused a new version of freon to arise, which was r22.
Our 22 didn't contain CFCs, but instead contained HC seize. This was kind of the middle of the pack when it came to these kind of chemicals January 1st on 2020, the government banning it from being imported in the United States, but I hear you asking Austin: our 22 is gon na be bent. What are we gon na use as a freon? Well I'll answer that question for you well, allow me to introduce my good friends, HFC and HF. Oh, these types of refrigerants were made to deal with the concerns about the global warming potential and the ozone depletion potential things that have been talked about ever since the eighties, the ozone hole.
No, I did it. There were a lot of crazy facts and abbreviations in there. How do you make sense of it all well, rather than letting me tell you, let's let a real expert share his opinion when we do so, let's identify some acronyms here. Cfc stands for chlorine fluorine carbon chlorine is the part that we worry about.
According to the EPA and the global community. It's the chlorine that gets up into the stratospheric ozone and damages the ozone as far as the ODP, which is ozone depletion potential. But then you have GWP, which is global warming potential, and even some of these refrigerants like HFCS, which are hydrogen fluorine carbon, they have no chlorine, they still have, according to the international environmental community, they still have a high global warming potential to ODP is ozone depletion Potential that was the old stuff like our eleven and our twelve, the old things that we would traditionally call freon and then r22 is an H. Cfc hydrogen chlorine fluorine carbon still had that chlorine in it. So it still had some ozone depletion. So that's what's being used as a refrigerant now, but it still gets back to the question. What does it mean when you're being told you need to pump your system with more freon? Well, what that means is that you have a refrigerant leak, whether it's freon or another type of refrigerant. What we know is that refrigerant isn't something that's used up: it's either contaminated or more likely it leaks out.
So it's very likely that you have a refrigerant leak when someone tells you that your system needs more freon, so sure charging your system with more freon will solve your problem, but only temporarily don't pursue a short-term solution, pursue a lasting one. All this to be said, the word freon is just a brand name for different types of refrigerants. Traditionally, our 12 are 11 and our 22 are the three that most people associate with that word freon, but there continues to be new freons even today, because that is just a brand name of dupont. Chemours, alright, thanks for putting up with Austin and me in this video.
Hopefully that clears up what refrigerant and freon is and what you need to know about it.
Time to make a new video, what are A2L. What are flammable refrigerant and why did the EPA take away our R410 and now CO2 and R32
And here I am thinking Freon is a gas on the periodic table lol Service area Orleans??
Yeah those environmentalist…. i wonder how many lives they saved when they stopped the depletion of the ozone layer?
Came here from an Erowid article btw. Anyone else here from Erowid?
Your dismissive attitude toward environmental protections is kinda uncalled for…
Freon? He was a good man, tortured by the boltons, and his last name was I think Greyjoy Are you in Barrhaven ?
Your camera is drunk, bro.
No jak to co nutka PRO8L3MU 😎🤙
my ac just leaked all its freon in my basement if i go in there tomorrow is it going to be gone?
Austin. What is your instagram name? Please
Now if you open up a bottle of Freon you can see the gas fall to the ground as it is heavy. I toke a class on the ozone in our atmosphere. The first area around Earth is called the Troposphere. This is where all the weather takes place. OK.
The next layer is the Stratosphere . Now this is a dead zone. OK. The next layer is the Ionosphere. This too is a dead zone. Now a dead zone means there is no wind or any type of weather. Just a dead zone. OK . The Ionosphere is where the " Ozone" lives . Ok. The Freon gas destroys this Ozone that protects the Earth. Ok. So we must be very carful about the use of Freon gas & this is why Freon destroys the Ozone Ok.
So there was a questions at the end of this speech. I raised my hand up five mins later he pointed to me for my question. So let me understand this story better. The first area is the "Troposphere" & this is where all the weather takes place? He say that is correct. The next is the Stratosphere & that is a dead zone ? The next area is the Ionosphere & this is a dead zone as well. That is correct. So Can you tell me how this heavy gas monodicloraldifloride can get up through two dead zones & destroy the ozone. You now could hear a pen drop at this meeting & every one when home Not one word was said not one said anything to me or any one else. I know i am not the brightest person out here & I was 20 years old when I graduated from Hight school. But the school system is that dumb. This is why I do not believe in any thing . I do not believe that I exist. Why you may ask ? I know I exist . There is a big difference. I know or I don't know. I only believe in what I ca do till I prove to myself I can't. Please Ponders this some. The Bulvine Scatologist.
I try to know my Shit. Are you in Ottawa ?
Good
Underrated vid
Is freon a greenhouse gas Service area Ottawa??
What to know about poisoning..I GOT something in my stomach.intestin troa and white tone give me some 🔌. 📓. 📩
A simple, good quick informative video. Austin was just fine. Thank you. I am still very curious though if a/c was similar in comfort back in like 1910ish. I realize ofcoarse improvements have happened. I roomed in a 130yo mini mansion at WDC and thought often about ac back then.
What is freon? Duh!
R-22 will be available for years. No new production is allowed, however reclaimed will be legal for years.
Austin is going places👍👍👍 great video. Are you in Kanata ?
This guy is awsome. Great editing skills and awsome in front of a camera. Keep up the good work lad your killing it !!!! Service area Nepean??
Kids like 13 Are you in Nepean ?
I laugh when the average Joe talks about how their system needed some Freon, as if they understand what it is. It's just a refrigerant!
do different mini splits use different freon or technology? i sent you an email weeks ago. there are a lot of DIY options, mrcool, pioneer, senville, klimaire, etc. they all look like the same unit to me with a different sticker on it. why is a mitsu over 2 times more money ?
the real problem is the design patent ran out so anyone could produce it. in order to make money a company like dupont is happy when a fuss is made and it is banned so a new product can take its place that just coincidentally was made by said company, when all the psudo science is decoded r12 and r22 are no worse than any other chemical. i spray chloro carbons in the form of brake cleaner in the air all the time cleaning parts.
Who took the videos?
Will you guys please start calling it 'Freezon'!?
Freon is DuPont’s name for their refrigerant. All other companies can only call there refrigerants refrigerants.
that's kid future HVAC Technician ^_^
Look out Br’y’an, Aust’y’n is gunning for your seat upon the throne
aint nothing free about freon
Is the one of your sons?
and he still couldn't say chlorofluorocarbon lol
Excellent job, Austin!
This kid is great. He will go far. . . . .
Keep it up, great video and content.
Way to go Austin! Can’t wait to see more of this type of presentation. I loved it!
