This was a call on a kitchen ac not cooling properly, right away we noticed it had horrible airflow because the unit was filthy.

It's gon na be an absolute miracle, just blower assembly. This crap is coming out. I mean we're, scraping it out, so it's gon na be a miracle. If it's not out of balance, this video is brought to you by sport'ln quality, integrity and tradition.

All right, we are going to get this bad boy cleaned up today. It is in horrible shape. Everything is vibrating rattling, we have a bad disconnect switch. The panels are destroyed.

We got two people here, so we're gon na tear this guy apart. The indoor blower assemblies full of dirt and lint, so we're gon na tear this apart, and then we've also got this AC right here that we're gon na do the same thing to we're gon na rip it apart and clean it. So we know what we're cleaning so we're gon na make it easy we're just gon na shut the units off pull the top off and start taking everything apart instead of trying to mess with it, we're gon na make it quick or as quick as possible. Okay, so luckily we had some conduit, we replaced the condo because it was all jacked up the existing wire made it in this is a different disconnect, but I'm gon na eliminate this junction point.

There's a junction point right here and I'm gon na go ahead and go get wire to make it one solid piece into the contactors, but I got to make sure I get the bigger connectors too and we'll see I might be changing these contactors to it. I have to be careful because again I can't just like go to town. You know because I do have not-to-exceed values, but I know the customer needs it running. So this is my kitchen AC and you know there's some big chunks on your, but look at the Ducks.

That's insane I mean we can't do all that, but we'll do our best to clean it up a little bit come over here and look at this economizer damper assembly, it's crazy huh and it's just caked on grease. I didn't even know that this thing is really doing anything. To be honest with you, I don't think it's like tough, but this blower assembly, it's a whole nother thing flip this over. There is a quarter inch of dirt.

On that thing, it's insane all right. I couldn't help it. I went ahead and changed the contactors. Hopefully I don't get crap, for it ran the wire all the way in and then, if you look at the way, I zip-tied them they're not going to rub out because normally, if you zip tied it, but the zip ties zipped to the zip tie nice and Secure into here, everything's labeled, so we're still putting it together, but I had to clean this off because this is full of dirt.

So take the blower give the rest of the unit a little blowout all right. I did my best to just grab as much of the big chunks as I could reach there's kind of got to get down there, the vacuum, but I don't got that today. What I'm gon na do before we start cleaning the coil is we're just gon na brush some stuff down, try to brush off the big stuff and then we'll hit it with cleaner. But you see how we're getting good progress just by giving it a brush with this.
This is just a little metal toothbrush, so we're just gon na attack it and then we'll give it a pre rinse and then start putting some cleaner on it. Before we put any cleaner, we're gon na do the pre rinse, I pull the key chop off and you just start from the bottom up and work your way up the coil and we're trying to saturate the coil, because if you, if you do this with a Dry, coil and start at the top. The water is just going to drip off kind of like see how it's doing, because I didn't get in the middle, it's kind of dripping off a little bit. You got to kind of, do it pretty evenly being careful not to get it in the ductwork and also not to let the drain overflow so we're gon na pre, rinse the whole thing and then we'll dump some cleaner on there.

All right we're going to use the Viper brightener now this is a highly concentrated heavy heavy duty. Cleaner you've got to be very careful. You want to pay attention to the fumes and everything this one is not as harsh as other manufacturers. You got to make sure you're using the coil gun from Viper, because the concentration rates are a lot lower, all right, working our way from the bottom up, we're on the B setting just put it on here nice and slow.

I already put a little bit on there, so we're just going to let it sit, we'll put it on from the other side. It's draining already a little bit, but the key to this cleaner is to let it sit for a few minutes, but also we're using this on an evaporator. So you got to make sure that any time you know any fumes aren't gon na upset the customer. Anything like that.

Luckily, this is a kitchen AC. If this was a dining room AC, I probably wouldn't advise without scheduling first thing in the morning when nobody's in the building or something look at the inner condenser, that's nuts, it's so dirty we're gon na get it nice and clean, though all right, we're still just Getting ready to rinse the evaporator that was fine to see it go ahead and spray. It crazy we're just trying to get the big stuff out, and once we get the big stuff out of them will apply cleaner. All right, I'm not looking for perfectly shiny.

I'm just using the heavy-duty cleaner because it was so greasy. That's all so. We've got some cleaner on the condenser too, and we're gon na rinse that soon it's gon na be an absolute miracle just blower assembly. This crap is coming out.

I mean we're scraping it out, so it's gon na be a miracle. If it's not out of balance, this thing is bad all right. I've got some evaporative cleaner in the coil gun now, and it foams up really good and it does a good job of penetrating all the way through the coil. You just got to watch out, though, because it starts to foam into the drain pan out of the drain pan, so we've got to make sure that we're getting it, but I'm just using the see setting so all in there and then we'll get it from the Other side to all of this stuff is from this blower assembly.
This thing turned out nice, nice and clean. It's gon na be a miracle. It's not out of balance. All the weights are still there on the counter weights so well yeah.

This thing is nice and clean. We're gon na put this back in the evaporators done. We just got the quanta miser done that economizer doesn't work, I'm gon na rinse off the compressors, because there's some oil we might have a refrigerant leak, but we'll address that in a minute heat exchangers trashed. But the evaporator is good.

I'm just gon na spray, some sanitizer on it and we're gon na be good nice and clean condensers, nice and clean again we're not looking for, like super shiny silver, we're just looking for clean. I can see right through it everything's good. All the way down into here looks good, so we're getting along all right, we're spraying some of the sanitizer in here. This is just the strike back sanitizer from refre refrigeration technologies, just spray it on all the surfaces when I'm done all right.

We're gon na check phase see if it's wired up correctly. I don't know if I did it right so line one two two and then we jump over to line three and it says line three two one. So the phase rotation is incorrect and this has scroll, compressors and three-phase indoor blowers, so everything's gon na be running backwards, so we need to power down and reverse the phases, we'll switch them on both sides. That way, the color combination matches up for my OCD, okay, I switch the wires around we're going to check phase rotation again.

It says line three so switch that over line one two, three phase rotation is correct, assuming that the wiring and the unit is correct, which I redid a bunch of it. So we will still have to check to make sure everything's good we're just wiring in the fan motors, so yeah we're almost there all right. Let's fire this up, I pulled the compressor wires off the stats, so it wouldn't turn on. We can such rotation doesn't sound, as you did, but rotation is correct, sounds like I might have a bearing going bad or something want the diagnose.

Further on, I talked to the facilities department and they're. Okay, with this, this motors got bad bearings. Let's listen to a startup, doesn't sound good and even worse, when you put a load on it and then, when you shut it down, if it does it yeah, I just doesn't sound good. So we got a new motor again, that's usual one thing after another, but this is coming out of Co.

Vid the equipment's just be down. You know it's just been running for months with plugged up filters. You know everything so we're gon na be lucky. If the blower assembly, it didn't, seem like it was out of balance, but you know I mean so many problems, so something you want to pay attention to.

Okay, first off his motors were red-hot because of the bearings going bad, but this is a factory OEM motor from carrier. I couldn't find an OEM motor today, so I went to an aftermarket motor but looking at the specs notice that the horsepower is blamed. Okay, you can try to match up this part number right here, the HD 58, but what you can also do is just look at the voltage. Look at the RPMs look at the current draw look at the frame size, those numbers right.
There are going to be perfect, even if we have the horsepower don't ever match up just the horsepower, especially when you're changing from an OEM motor. Now I've got a motor right here that, if you look at it look at my current draw current draw is seven point: nine four at 230 volts, so it is going to change a little bit. It's a usable at 208 volt. So it's gon na be eight point.

Seven nine current draw at two away frame is 56 phase. Three phase rpms rpms in 1735, high shaft size, is the same, but I'm changing the pulley anyway, so you could go with a different sized shaft if you needed to but K carrier has one of the dumbest setups for motor pulleys and stuff. They are never perfect and you can never get them lined up right, so this one is about as good as it's gon na get and it's not perfect. It's still a little cattywampus a little jacked up, but we again the problem is: is that the way that they mount their motors on these brackets, they always flex.

So I actually shimmed it with washers in the front because it was all cattywampus and jacked up. So that's as good as it's going to get we're gon na check the tension and then we'll put it all back together. Hey what do you know? It doesn't sound horrible anymore. Alright, the direction is good.

We're gon na put the panel on and then we're going to, diagnose everything check for and draw actually. First alright, we're allowed to run eight point: seven, nine amps! So we're good on that and I the pulley the same as the other pulley. So we should be about the same airflow, but we have one other issue in that when the first stage compressor turned on a minute ago, the condenser fan motor didn't turn on. So we probably just mixed up a wire or something we're gon na jump into that and figure out that problem, and then we still got to diagnose and figure out if this thing has a leak or what all right, so this guy is leaking.

This is a core max fitting you got. Ta have the core max tool. What you do is break this free okay. I got a wrench on here and I broke this one loose and then just kind of snugged it back on the core max tool, locks on like that and then you're gon na unscrew, this guy right here, nice and slow and we're gon na pull it out Valve it off put a new one in and replace it.

So, just like a core removal tool, it's ball valves off and there's the core max fitting. So we'll pull that off put a new one in and then I got a little case of them right here and then we'll be done. We prepared easy as that, it's kind of scary, because there's no pressure relief on this and you got to kind of assume that it's in there when you go to pull this off and it just shoots off at you. Oh but okay, cool leak-free.
Now alright first stage is running and we're extremely low on refrigerant low, head pressure, low suction pressure, look at the superheat, so we're gon na give it a minute. Let it stabilize now because I literally just turned it on, but I know that we're low, so we're gon na give it a minute, then we're gon na add some refrigerant. We've already got a setup to add to it because we know it how to leak at that portal. You know this thing is act and probably not working the greatest as it should be, but our super heats coming down.

We're still high on our head pressure, but there's a couple things contributing to that: we're still going to add a little more refrigerant. First off this thing has aftermarket condenser fan motors and the fan motors don't sit low enough, so they recirc a little bit of air and then I also need to probably get a better outdoor air temp baby. All right there put that right there, let's see if that gives me a more accurate in these things. This thing is just beat down target superheats about 17 degrees.

Last night, look we'll look again in a minute. Let's see, what's our target super, he calculated targets about 13 degrees. Now, so we move some air probes we're gon na, let it run for a little bit before we add any more gas and then we'll end up jumping on the second stage. I don't anticipate this thing working out to be a perfect all right.

I have to turn the unit off to get on to the second stage, but this is what I'm talking about. You see these blades they're barely getting up into the cone and that's because they're aftermarket motors and the stack on the motor is too thick right there. So that's gon na affect our head pressure. Our condenser is clean.

You can see right through it, so you know you're good there in the sub cooling reading that we're reading on there's not as accurate, because we are reading discharge line pressure and we're not getting liquid line pressure so that sub cooling number. That's why it's skewed a little bit, but alright we're gon na fire up second stage to see how that one's operating our target temperature split is about 18 degrees according to measure quick, we're running! Sixteen point: eight, I'm! Okay with that. It's saying air flow is a tad bit high. I'm not going to make any more adjustments.

We've got a 12, it's ranging 12 degrees superheat and I think we're calling for 17. But it's it's bouncing back and forth 13. So it's rising we're not going to adjust anymore. This is the second stage we're looking pretty good 43 degree, vaporators temperature 109 degrees saturation, I'm okay with that measured quick, I'm sure is going to have a lot to say systems, not liquid line blowout and dirty condenser.
Non-Condensibles, the dirty condenser potentially is going to be that those condenser fan motors messing with stuff but yeah. This is about as good as this system is gon na get not much better than this. So altogether we just about change. The entire unit changed an indoor blower motor.

We pulled the unit apart, we clean the entire thing. We fixed a refrigerant leak. We change the disconnect switch yeah. It's it's been crazy.

Alright, we're gon na wrap this one off. That's it on this one. It seems like I've, been getting a lot more of these cleaning videos and it's basically because coming out a co vid, we have restaurants, that you know and I don't blame them, but they all had to stop doing preventative maintenance, okay and then, on top of that, A lot of these restaurants were having a hard year already, so this particular restaurant had stopped preventative maintenance from well I'd, say October, and then they did one. I think right at the end of January, but we weren't able to clean everything because they just wanted one maintenance and it was like okay.

So we had to like get on the ice machines and things like that, so they really haven't had this equipment maintained. For you know four or five I mean a long time, basically more than four or five months, it's been a while. So you know that's what's happening and it's kind of unfortunate because we don't get. You know a simple, hey: the drains plugged up blow out the drain.

Call it's or you know so in this. In this case we got a no cooling call for the kitchen and I went out there and the office AC wasn't working. I didn't really go into detail on that one in this video, but it was just dirty. I thought when I had someone else with me.

He was doing the office AC. While I was doing the kitchen so anyways the office AC was dirty. The kitchen AC was dirty the make up air unit that has a swamp cooler built on it, isn't working, it's just been a lot of cleaning stuff and you know I'm trying to take it as easy as possible on these guys. But at the same time I got it, you know you got to fix it, it's got to be working right, but you know, for instance, in this video I kept saying how the condenser fan motors were, you know all messed up.

You know I'm just gon na it'll be okay, you know it's not running optimal conditions, but it'll be fine. You know so we'll just deal with it and if ever one of those motors fails, you know we'll put an OEM motor back in there. I'd really really like to get my hands on a top and some side panels for this unit, but it's not going to be practical. The customer's not gon na want to buy a new top for this unit.

It's I don't even know if you can get them. You might be able to, but it's not really gon na, be something the shipping on. That would be ridiculous. So you know when we go through these.

You know we don't always have a perfectly operating unit and you have to be able to do your best. Look at everything I mean. I know that you know the subcooling was too high and also the subs cooling number was skewed because we were using discharge line pressure. But still I know the sub cooling was high.
I know the superheat wasn't ideal, but you know we did our best to get the unit operating as good as possible and, of course the customer is in the loop now in this particular situation, the general manager on site. They don't want to know anything. Okay, I deal with the facilities department in this situation. Occasionally I will interact with the general manager.

I mean I always go in and say hi to them before Cova do you would always go in and shake their hand ask him how their day was now from a distance. You say hi, you say I'm here to fix the AC and then we go up onto the roof and then my communication happens with the facilities department. I just kind of, let them know hey. This is what I'm running into and they know they've kind of.

Given me a blanket, it's okay do what you got to do and it's funny how corporations work too, because they know the facilities Department knows that we're not doing preventative maintenance and they want preventative maintenance. So in fact, they've given me the all-clear that whenever we have a repair PM it it doesn't matter if it adds an extra thousand dollars to it PM it because they are advocating for preventative. Maintenance is just as much as we are they're just middle management that has to you know, listen to what the management above them says. You know, so they want us to clean it on the facilities level.

You know it's just getting the approvals to get the routine preventative maintenance is built back in and even if they started preventative maintenance. -- is again today. These restaurants are so far behind it's insane. I mean it's just ridiculous that it takes me basically, seven hours to you know clean the unit put a disconnect on it change a blower motor put contactors, I mean cleaning.

The unit alone is gon na. Take me about four hours, just because you have to pull the tops. There's no simple like oh, you know, just change the filters or change the belt. It's everything is down on these and you guys saw it went from.

We already knew. We had a bad disconnect that someone had diagnosed previously. It was blowing fuses and you know then, while I was doing that, I noticed the contactors look like crap, so I changed those you know started it up. Blower motor was going bad.

I mean it's just like one thing after another and I feel for the restaurants on one way, because it's like man, I know that they're just trying to survive right now. You know, but I have to make a profit too, but at the same time you guys know the way that I make my videos, I'm not here, to rip the customers off whatsoever. I'm here to be as honest as possible, and I do all right. You know with that honesty I mean, I'm not.
You know, selling crap every day, but I mean I'm going off on a tangent on that one, but we got the unit operational. It's working really really appreciate you guys taking the time to watch these videos. Remember I go live Monday evenings 5:00 p.m. Pacific on YouTube.

If you guys, I say this almost at the end of every one of my videos, if you guys are considering any tool purchases. Do me a favor and check out true tech tools? Comm, if you like their pricing, I can vouch for their customer service. They have great customer service and I prefer to purchase tools from them, but anyways. If you decide to go with true tech tools, make sure you guys price shop.

Do me a favor and use my offer code, big picture. One word: you'll save eight percent on your order and then I get a small Commission and it helps to support the channel. So really really appreciate you guys and hopefully you'll see you guys Monday evening at 5 p.m. Pacific on my livestream, all right.

Wonder if you could put a small shroud around those refurbed fan motors, to channel the airflow out the unit better. Blades lower, hole lower, problem solved?

Kudos for this video. It proves I'm NOT the only one biting my tongue about customers' zero maintenance (my former boss once tried to calm me down by stating, "George, I once flew to SINGAPORE and all I did there was change his filters; that was an19 hr flight OUT, 19 hr flight BACK ,and ONE hour on site").

I like how you prioritize the tasks that are essential vs the ones that are more optimum. It is clear that failing to have work done is only kicking the ball down the street, there's no real economy, usually with additional costs.

Oh, as a side comment, on a three phase motor, you can just switch any two phases, if it is running backward. I saw you were using phase tape to keep it right, but it is faster and easier to replace phase tape than replace the whole thing. Just a thought.

Another great video. As an electrician, I just hooked up the electrical and never thought that maintenance was needed. I think your hitting the nail Chris ,
We always have to make the balance between perfect and functional.
Now with the covid … it is a whole new game .
I have many customers who have cut labor loads down dramatically. Forklifts are sitting idle and pm service is not being done.
Fast forward a few months and they find the industrial battery is dead , now it is up to us to see how we can help the customers…
Basic point is , I make money from them making money , if they can't make their money , they sure as S don't want to pay me .. if I take it like a wild man , they never call us back .. fine line , customer relations are huge . Be safe brother !
