So get this. A contractor will come out and tell you that you need an AC unit, a new furnace and take your AC unit or furnace away or both and then you'll never see them again. What they're really doing is stealing your air conditioning unit. noff says and I'm paraphrasing there just to let you know.

Another scam the Better Business Bureau has reported is seeing someone installing an air conditioning unit that the unit breaks down and you can never get in contact with the installer for it to be reported. They also go through how some of these companies are gouging customers with pricing and what these companies are doing is in some cases is reaching out to the homeowner directly. So if you're not sure that the company you are speaking to is legit, you should hang up and call that company's direct number that you can find online and then you'll be able to know if who you were talking to is the real deal.

Scam (IMO): HVAC company quotes me $12k to $20+k for a new R410A system, (and 410a is phasing out next year 2024). So I put it in myself for ~$1k.

Yes, I have heard of HAVC techs "condemning" a system without explaining the full facts to the resident. Not only that they don't really explain the HVAC has been disabled or that they have taken parts from it etc. What a crock.
