Knits or Fan motors typically have little uh weep holes in the bottom and in the top. there's one right there, this is the bottom and then there's two right there in the top. They typically have a little rubber grommet and you want to. depending on the orientation of the motor shaft down, shaft up, you want to move the grommets around.
Now this one had the grommets in the wrong spot. the bottom was closed and the top was open and this motor sits shaft up and it filled up with water. Now it wasn't full of water today, but I was really suspect when I saw that. So I opened it up and look.
You can see that, look at how much water was in there at one point and then look in here. you can clearly see that there was water in here too and then it filled up and at one point probably trip to breaker now. I had to Uh, this guy also had a bad bearing. This one right here barely spins and then this one spins for a lot longer but this is really rough.
You can feel it grinding too.
Just came across this yesterday. Made it’s own drain hole by blowing out the bottom bearing. Lol
My unit has a unserviceable motor. No holes at all, no way to repair.
No slinger around the shaft??
It's crazy how many techs don't know about the grommet
Water cooled, nice for cooling bad for electricity Service area Nepean??
Common sense right, I mean they have a reason for being in, just figure it out
The generic replacement motors most guys use in socal don't mention the grommets
They put Wee Poles on a lot of different stuff and they are important.
Been an HVAC tech for just over 2 years, and had no idea there were holes in either side of the motors 😂 Guess I need to take more motors apart! Service area Kanata??
I mean it's not like anyone is told everything I assume someone just didn't know
After watching the full video I wasn't 100% convinced, but the short here caught my attention in different ways, like how you called out the rust line on the rotor and showed a clear bearing housing with corrosion.
You're my hero. I've slacked on watching your vids but I'm back on it.
Wow
+1
It’s also important to make sure the drain holes are on the bottom when mounted horizontal and BOTH holes are open. Guys mess these up more than they get them right. Reading instructions is hard 🤣
I've only had to do that on universal motors
Nicely done, Chris! This is a mistake I made early on, just not knowing. Always great content 👏💪
Nice to see you break down a motor while the customer is paying t&m 😂
Very important thing to do. The previous guy missed it resulting in water damage Are you in Ottawa ?
I made that very mistake early on in my career. Was back 2 weeks later to replace it after it failed under "warranty" when the guy at Grainger pointed it out to me. Only lasted 2 weeks because I used to live in rainy Washington state, it filled with water right away. I learned a number of lessons the hard way as I had no journeyman to work under. I try and teach my guys all these little things so they don't have to learn them the way I did.
Awesome
