This video is brought to you by Sporland Quality, integrity and tradition. Who to call today about an exhaust fan not working? They're saying that it's not pulling up smoke over this flat top region right here that they use for cooking, so we need to jump up on the roof and see what's going on up there. Exhaust fans are all right here, so this should be the one they're complaining about right here. It feels like it's running, you know what? but I'm not feeling air blowing out I bet you we had a broken belt. Um, this particular customer does not do routine maintenance and I've been getting a lot of service calls at this particular restaurant chain for broken belts lately, so we'll definitely check all the fans and we won't just stop at the one that they're calling about. Now when I do that kind of stuff I Have to make it known that I am doing that with the corporate office's permission. Okay, corporate realizes that they don't do routine maintenance, so they have asked us. When you're on site, open your eyes and look around. You want to be really careful because you don't want to jump into things without customers approval. so I don't want to give the impression that I just walk around doing whatever I want. This is with the corporate office's approval that I'm not just going to look at this fan I'm going to look at every fan and probably you know, go through everything. So let's go get this guy opened up. Open this guy up. It's kind of Bluetooth drive and it's not working right anymore. Look at that belt that's uh, crispy right? I don't understand the whole look at that guy that looks healthy right? I don't understand the whole no maintenance stuff I mean I guess I kind of get it. you know, whatever. they just want to be reactive to their stuff. But so I'm gonna go through see this belt is used. but maybe I can get it on there temporarily and then we better check. Like I said every other exhaust fan on this roof because I bet you they're all in just as equal a shape. what I typically do when I'm doing something like this is I'll go around and I'll write the belt size now that's just a Sharpie marker so that'll disappear shortly. but I just write the belt size that way I can put the lid back on if I need to or whatever and I'll take a belt count when I'm done. This is not a brand new belt. It's got some weird wear patterns on it, but it'll be fine for now. So I put it on there. We'll start this guy up and now we're actually moving air and then we're going to investigate every other one. Got our next fan? Let's have a look and see how bad this belt is. Now it looks like there's see and I don't understand leaving a bunch of old belts now. Like I said, this one's actually not bad one 22, 22 so that was changed in January of 22. that's insane. They haven't done any routine maintenance here since last January of that's crazy huh? Let's keep on going. All right. let's move on to the next one. These all these fans are in pretty beat up shape this one. Look at this. Yeah, that's a loose belt for sure. So yeah, they've got multiples now I'm being very careful. If you're gonna stop about, do it at your own risk. it can be very dangerous. So Ax20 again 122.22 is the last time these belt so that one's just completely stretched out. bad. So we're I think we're just gonna have to do, especially because these are a year old. We're probably just going to do new belts on everything and I'm getting a list. I'm looking at the makeup air unit. We're going to look at the ACs too. We're going to look at all the belts on the roof so this guy looks like yeah, it's extremely loose and again being that they're not doing maintenance, these belts are all stretched out. We'll just get new ones but look at it's all cracked. So Ax 41 what is this? I don't understand leaving all the old belts in here. Yeah this is worn. You can look at it and you can see how they're worn. Look at all these old belts that I'm pulling off this roof and then none of them are good. So all right we'll write that down too. and then we'll jump on the ACs and then we'll run to the supply house. The ACs really aren't that bad. They actually had new belts sitting down here. so I put new belts on and one of them is tight. So I put new belts on two of them. Um, but look at the inside of this, look at all that mold looks really healthy to. Breathe Right Nasty. And again, they don't do routine maintenance here. so this is what happens. Look at this that looks chunky and yummy. Sure that's really safe to breathe. I Mean honestly, this unit's a lost cause. with the mold build up like that, they just need to change the unit. You're never going to get it cleaned out completely. I mean both blower assemblies all the way back there. There's no way you could sanitize this completely. I Prefer when possible to use the cogged belts or the ax belts because in my opinion, you get better life out of them. They last longer by having all the little notches in there. My understanding is it reduces the heat because you know there's less belt there and you get a little more Flex out of them. but it's kind of difficult to find them like I Wish I could find ax 20s for all the exhaust fans, but they they typically don't have them at the supply house. So when possible I get the cogged belts but you know you can only do so much so we're gonna go around putting them on everything and then leaving spares and everything. So the idea is have the manager called me over the weekend because this is a Monday and they the I guess the exhaust fan went down over the weekend but they didn't call us, they waited until Monday I could have walked them through. well I don't think they could have done it but I could have walked him through changing the belts if they had proper spares in there. but all the spares in every exhaust fan were just trashed. so I'm Gonna Leave spares and everything and then you know that way if they wanted to change the belt themselves, they could. Even if they call me out here, leaving spares gives them the ability to not have to go open a supply house for a belt. I Don't stock belts in my truck I keep a couple rescue belts the the ones that you can adjust the size on them for a B belt and then an A belt in a worst case scenario but you know I prefer to have the right ones on there because I don't like to leave those rescue belts on. um, you can. but it just makes it harder for the next guy when you have a rescue belt on there because there's no size written on it. So I Always try to be a cool dude and not not do that to other people. But all right, let's get these things put on. this. pulley on here is borderline worn out, so what you want to see is a perfect V-shaped and there's a notch in there. If you stick your fingers in there and you can feel a ridge that's not good, it should be a perfect V-shape So we'll definitely bring to the customer's attention that it's time to, uh, replace the pulley. But I'm not going to do that today. You know again, using the big picture approach again with the customer's permission. Can find so much more stuff right? So this customer doesn't do a routine maintenance. So if I keep my eyes open I could come here and I look at this fan. First off, this conduit is plastic PVC conduit. It's really UV damaged, right? It's very rigid, there's no flexibility to it anymore. But then on top of that, look it. it's cracked right there. But then look in here. there's pieces of broken plastic in the motor. I Mean just overall. the bearings on this guy right here don't sound good. The fan itself looks like a roofer went nuts on it for whatever reason. I Don't know, that doesn't make sense. but um I'm gonna talk to the customer. you know about all the repairs that this fan needs and give them an option of a replacement. Uh, this is an old Supreme fan, but there is companies Supreme no longer exists but there is companies that mimic this fan. I Can't remember the name of it but I found it before. Uh, so you can just get a bolt-on replacement for this fan. The only thing you have to worry about when you're doing a replacement and this one looks like it's already got the converted hinges on the old ones. The hinges were solid right here, so you can actually just buy the top, but then the hinges would have been welded on. You had to knock the pin out and do all kinds of things. but in this situation we could just loosen those bolts. This will lift right up and you don't change the base, you just change the top. But oh yeah, I can get the information off of here. It's a D150 fan from 2001. So I'll write down all the information in the motor specs and we'll bring it to the customer's attention again. This is another potential job that while I was just walking around I noticed hey, this Fan's in really bad shape so the customer may want me to change the motor. uh, maybe change bearings on it. I'll do that if they want me to too. I'll give them all kinds of cost options, but knowing them, they're just going to want me to throw a new fan on here and be done with it. I'm not gonna come out here and say that I'm perfect and I never roll a belt on an exhaust fan. Rolling a belt on is when you just stretch it around the pulleys and Roll It on Okay, but it's always best if you don't So in this situation, this one's really easy. I loosened up this guy which takes the tension off the motor and then I put the belts on and then we're going to tighten it. That is the correct way to do a belt and the other way you have potential of stretching out the belt and also damaging the uh the motor bearings by by over tightening the belt. so you should always loosen the set screws like this, then tension it, then check your tension, you know, and go from there. but again, I'm not gonna say that I've never rolled the belt on I've done it many times. Okay, um, we got a little more tension we need on that one So, but it's always best if you guys properly do these things okay. Make sure that you're adjusting it accordingly. Don't ever adjust the pulley to get belt tension. That's not what a pulley's for. A pulley changes the uh. speed at which the belt is being turned. So if we adjust this, it's gonna directly change the speed at which this belt is turning this pulley. So if you open it or close it, it's going to change that. So you never open and close a pulley or a sheave to tighten a belt. Okay, don't do that. So we've got new belts and spare belts in every exhaust fan. The spares are left in a place where they're not going to cause damage. They're not going to get stuck in the wheel or anything like that. We put them on the back nice and good. Everything's tension. So this guy's ready to get turned back on and the lid put back on and the customer is going to be happy because their original problem of a broken belt on that single exhaust fan is fixed. But then I was able to look at everything and say, hey, you know what, this fan. We've got some issues. We might need to change a motor, some electrical conduits, or depending on what the customer wants to do, we might just change a fan. So big picture stuff. I Can't stress that enough. Take your time when you're allowed to understand that. You know, sometimes some customers don't want you to do that kind of stuff. So this particular one does. And I looked at all their ACS too just to make sure the belts were tight on those. So that's it on this one in the video I Referenced an emergency belt. You might call them a link belt. An emergency belt. Who knows? There's a couple different manufacturers that make them. This is the B belt or the B version. Um, it has these little links right here and you basically just add and remove them to make the belt longer or shorter. These are great to keep in your truck. I Do not, uh, stock normal belts in my truck, but we try to keep one of these in an A belt and a B belt in every vehicle. So that way in case of an emergency, we can use those, but they're rather expensive. so I don't like to use those on a regular basis. Okay, but they'll get you through a weekend. If you have a broken belt and you don't want to have to waste a supply, House's time to have to come in. you know I think about it like that. even though I'm going out to do an emergency service call and the customer and you know has me come in on a Saturday or something like that for silly things. if I can wait I Prefer not to open up the supply house I prefer not to waste their time even though the guys get paid I Don't want them to have to come in to give me a belt. you know what I'm saying. So sometimes I'll utilize one of those emergency belts, get me through the weekend, then go back on normal time if that's what the customer wants to do now. Um, in this video I Do want to reiterate just like I said in the videos that everything that I do is with the customer's permission I encourage everybody out there, especially during the shoulder Seasons or the slow seasons. and careful I Know there's going to be people out there telling me that if I have a slow season I'm doing something wrong. Okay, shut up. All right. Um, here where we're at, we have really mild climates. we don't get a lot of heating calls, the air conditioning calls kind of dry up in the winter time, and we just have refrigeration calls. so we stay busy. but it's just not as busy as it was during the summer. So that's why we call it our slow timer. our shoulder season. Okay, we don't know what cold is here in Southern California I Think today was probably in the 60s all day, maybe maybe low 70s, but it's just cool. But you know it's right at that weather, whether or not you need a sweater or not. I know. Okay, for those of you in the Midwest and the Far East and up north you guys you know probably won't even wear a sweater in 60 degrees. but in Southern California that's our Ugg boots, beanies, and sweat letters at 60 degrees. Okay, I know we don't know what cold is okay, but as we slow down I Encourage every one of you with the customer's permission and with your company's permission, open your eyes, open your ears and look around and find work. Okay, that's what I tell my employees we're on a location doing a reach-in service call as long as the manager is okay with it. Do you mind if I jump on the roof? Just take a peek at your equipment? Just walk up on the roof. Just go look. Hey, the belts look like they're They're cracked or getting really loose. They're working right now. you know, bring it to their attention. Sometimes that's a service call. They'll generate a work order and then you can do some more work. Right in this situation of this one, we had a broken belt I said hey, would you guys like me to look at everything Yeah, Do it, you know I changed a bunch of belts on that roof and I found a potential exhaust fan issue where the motor is going bad. Maybe some bearing issues, you know. So again, open your eyes, look around, don't just go there, do a simple service call and walk away. You know, open your eyes and look around, talk with the customer you know, become someone that they trust and for me, I build that trust by giving them value, right? I'm here doing something else. Hey, you know what? this walking cooler every time you open the door sounds kind of funny? Do you mind if I pop my head in there I'm not going to touch anything. just look at it. Hey, you know what it's all Frozen up. That's something you probably want to take care of, you know? So it's that kind of stuff. Just look around, right?     That's what I do on my maintenance, just leave one spare just in case and remove all the garbage cause most of the old belts are junk, and tell customers a recommendation to avoid future problems, is up to them to decide fix it or not.     Ok, leaving a belt behind is a way to see the history of the unit as far as wear and tear goes, mainly alignment of the belt and cogs… Also helps the newer guy to to see what belt they may need to get on a full blow out. Old guy here. Also never wear gloves around a belt and the cams. I'm guessing this is the low desert of California, probably near near a Chili's or Olive Garden near the Indio Basin.

    Tested and balanced so many of those exhaust fans over the years. Notice how hot the motor 'feels' along with maybe a tach and amp reading. Run into motors riding in the service factor after start up was done to many times.

    Thank You so much for your videos. I'm a co owner of a small mom & pop restaurant on the east coast. I have learned so much from you. It is very hard to find anyone these days to come out even in emergency situations so I find myself on the net searching to fix things myself.     Im always in two minds about leaving too many brand new spare belts. So often they just end up in the trash because by the time they are needed they either cracked or just no good from being up in the hot machines for months on end.

    Also never understood why people like 10 dead belts in the machines too. Maybe leaving one or two of the best old ones of each size with maintenance as 'friday night' belts is a good idea. But i swear some techs just treat machinery and the roof in general as a rubbish bin!

    But im sure this is a conversation you have had with your customer about what they want.

    You mentioned taking writing down the info on that one fan and motor specs. Something I like to do is take pictures of the data tags on them and that way you have it saved and you can even go into your edit option on your smart phone and go to text and type yourself notes on the pics. Also take pics to submit to the customer as well. Quicker than grabbing a notebook and writing down everything and you have it all saved on your phone. Also you can go to a picture and copy and paste serial or model numbers by selecting them on the pic. Service area Nepean??

    I hate having to pay to open up a supply house for anything except compressors or equipment. I only have an a size rescue belt on my van but our shop has a stock of random belts for repeat customers, granted their maintenance stock but its pretty handy in a pinch late at night

    The Gates brand of rubber belts was first made in Denver as this company developed the V-belt out of vulcanized rubber and cloth laminate to replace the leather bets of old. The manufacturing is done elsewhere on various items other than rubber belts and tires. The headquarters is still in town as the factory was torn down in the 1990's. Samsonite Luggage factory was across the street. I had a few field trips in school to these places during the 1960's. My grandmother worked in that factory during WWII, the only job she had outside the house. My replacement serpentine belt in my pickup is a Gates. Memories.

    I see a some of those motor pulleys where the belt is riding very low in the V, which can cause it to grab the belt and shred it, time for some smaller pulley’s so that you can close them up some and still have the same speed to avoid that. Are you in Barrhaven ?

    Clogged belts are a harder rubber and pulleys wear faster but They last longer. Gates are the best. Continental are also good. Browning belts stretch too much. Great video Chris!

    I was nodding my head at the acknowledgement of 60 being shirtsleeve weather for us, but not for So Cal (or Texas where my sister lives). It's gotta just be what you're acclimated to. I wouldn't last 1/2 hour in the temps you have to endure during the summer.

    I have noticed a lot of customer requests to leave the old belts as back up incase the belt breaks. Of course it’s not the best belt to utilize since the belts dries up over time. But loved the video.
