Joshua explains his position in a recent video. Three secrets HVAC contractors don't want you to know.
Contractors are not comfortable with the truth being out there sometimes. They try to downplay and even insult me at times. I go through my position and even Challenge others a bit. I think it's OK to do whatever you think is right for your business such as changing prices periodically. But if you are doing it in a sleazy way and taking advantage of folks, I'm going to call it out. And if you're not guilty of these practices, why are you commenting anyway? 😉

Great info, getting a new install tomorrow, Bryant 5 ton single stage and the air handler will be a two stage due to the cabinet not being able to get through the attic opening. Will they work good together? Thanks in advance.

I got several bids for a new HVAC system. One guy, out of 6 bids was trying to sell us the system almost DOUBLE ($18,000) for the gold American Standard system than other competitors. When confronted (I told him most people are bidding around $9000+). He told me that prices for the units are the same everywhere but that not everyone has the same "overhead". I told him, that he was very nice and a great seller and that he would have no problem selling his HVAC systems to the wealthy. He felt offended by my comments. 🙄What you are saying is completely true!

By the way, quick question, Is it true that an oversized coil make your system more efficient? Currently, we have a 2.5 ton A. C with a 3 ton coil. The Gold American Standard system has that we want only come in full tons. The 3 ton A. C. – combo is about 12,000. Thus, is higher than our budget. Could we go with a 2 ton A. C (A. S) and a 3 ton coil? We live in zone 4, house is 1020 Sq ft.

I'm asking this because our 2.5 ton A. C. in combination with the 3 ton coil was great but was about 35+ years old. We are concerned about climate change and the earth getting hotter. ( Scientists predict this is going to be the cooler is going to be in the next 100 years). Thus, my question about going with the lower tonnage A. C.? Alternatively, we could buy a lower grade A. C that's bigger….

Can someone please answer my question? Thank you!!

It’s simple supply and demand summer time more demand more work more expensive, fall / winter most small companies just look to break even and keep payroll paid , price varies in all situations book price then total job cost to do it right , u have to take in supply and return size seer rating ton and give a proper estimate always , labor cost may be less in winter means boss makes less but everyone keeps a job and family’s feed

I dont think its gauging in most cases. There's always a black sheep sure, but what I've seen most of the time is contractors are booked 3 plus months out. A homeowner or business owner says what will it cost to get this installed sooner? Money talks. 💰 💰

If you want it done sooner it'll cost you extra. Just from what I've seen in my market. Very little price gauging intentionally. Too much competition in the market and smart consumers always get multiple bids right? 😉

Same can be said about contractors that go in cheap cheap and make an honest bid look like 💩

It all happens. Good to get multiple bids, always. Service area Barrhaven??

I find HVAC contractors to be the most challenging of the trades. No licensing or oversight, they are often negligent in oversizing equipment. Very unprofessional, will come in and take 1-2 hrs of time, say they will get me a quote in 3 days or a weeks, 3 weeks later I have nothing. Or, they provide a quote that is over 50% higher than others, and try to convince me their labor is really that expensive. Many will try to talk a homeowner into a solution that the company can provide, they steer HO's away from services they can't provide, even if it might be the right solution from the HO. I've seen lots of really bad work.
The HVAC 'salespeople' are the worst. Selling $30K+ solutions and they can't behave professionally. Example: If you are completely replacing HVAC system equipment, and or ductwork, you really need an independent third party to run a Manual J load on your house. That is Step One, get the number of heating and cooling BTU's you need for each room / level in your house. How many contractors recommend doing that? NONE! They try to ballpark it and cause major issues by permanently messing it up with the wrong size. If you are redoing ductwork, Step 2 is hire an engineer or HVAC design company to design the ductwork. It is a science. HVAC guys are not experts at that. Third party engineers / design companies are not expensive.

You don’t have to price gouge, because your most likely the highest price range year round. Every company has a different overhead than the other companies. I guarantee your thousands more than my prices on furnace swaps, condenser swaps & whole systems.

Another problem is posed with Covid 19 and the ever changing mandates and home/business owners concerns about who's going to work in their respective places.

we have tried to get bids/estimates in Roanoke va since last year; everyone i have contacted gives a bid by just giving me a number without any explanation how or what they are billing me for. when asked- "we only give lump sum estimates"…..i have never had any other trade act this way. even going to car mechanic they can at the least break down the cost of materials vs labor. any explanation or suggestion on getting a better estimate?
