In this booth interview from the 5th Annual HVAC/R Training Symposium, Bert moderates a conversation with Don Gillis from Chemours, a company that makes refrigerants. Chemours was formerly part of DuPont until 2015. Don is well-known as an educator in the HVAC/R field and has presented at the symposium multiple times.
During the interview, Don discusses Chemours' new 454 series of refrigerants - 454A, 454B, and 454C. He explains that 454B is designed for comfort cooling applications, replacing R-410A in new equipment. 454A is optimized for medium temperature applications under 200 lbs, while 454C targets lower GWP for low temperature over 200 lbs systems.
Don highlights that while the components are the same across the 454 refrigerants, the ratios are adjusted by scientists to hit targeted GWP levels under different charge sizes. He also previews an upcoming main stage A2L refrigerant presentation with a colleague.
The discussion touches on refrigerant tanks being gifted to tie down sponsor tents this year, as well as the symposium's growth into a key industry education hub. Don expresses gratitude for the opportunity to give back through events like this.

Okay guys, we're back. Fifth Annual Symposium um I Know a lot of you wish you were here and you're not here. but I'm going to try to help you not miss out on anything. So uh, here we are.

Another booth that has come out to actually support us, Support training, support what we got going on here. Um and uh. go ahead, introduce yourself, Tell us Yeah! I'm Don Gillis From Kores uh formerly what was Dupon up until 2015 and we make refrigerants and uh and work. Excited to be here As as always.

Yes and uh, you've been here several times before. Great to have you back. Yeah, thank you. Always a pleasure.

Yeah and everybody knows Don Huge educator in the field so that's awesome. Yeah well what do you? What do you have here? What's on the table? So we've got you know, like first thing I want to talk about I guess is our 454 series. Okay so we're you know it's easy as ABC and basically what that amounts to is we have 454a, B and C uh B obviously will be our comfort cooling. that's what's replacing 410A and and then your A's and C's will be medium or low temp depending on how many pounds are in there because the Gwps are different.

Kind of gets in the weeds. but uh, take us in the weeds. man. So anything anything that less than 200 lb in a system you'll be able to You'll this will be your one.

454a and it really really. When it compare it to 404a it shines, it does better capacity. It looks really good. 454 C is a lot lower gwp and that will be in your systems above 200 lb.

So the the bar right now is set. it has to be lower than 300 gwp or lower than 150. This will be your uh, over 200 for your three for your 150 and this will be less than 200 on this one here. Okay, yeah yeah, so it really depends.

Uh Bart just B Just how low do you want to go kind of thing. Really? What do you want your SST to be right? Because it's the same components which is interesting fact they're just different ratios. you know it's R32 and 1230 for YF 6040, 50/50 8020 You know what I mean just depending on scientist uh, when they develop that kind of stuff. But yeah, well.

uh how the conversation's gone so far here. Great a big buzz around A2l obviously which all these three are obviously went with the the Red Stripe tank. You can see what's holding down the tents here, but uh yeah. so we're going to be speaking tomorrow.

Uh, on A2l refrigerant Chris and I and uh, we're going to be doing an hour and a half I believe in the main stage on uh spec. more likely for the 454 because this is more geared for air conditioning folks and stuff like that. but we will touch on other things. So yeah, okay yeah.

going great, good. Love to hear it and uh, it was kind of interesting this year. every year we have this we have to find a way to tie down our tents. So when they were out here last year they noticed how we were tying down our tents with refrigerant tanks.

So all of a sudden a pallet shows up here full of a bunch of takes that they gifted to us. Check it out and so now everybody has, uh every sponsor here has their tent tied down with one of their tanks. that uh, it was actually kind of awesome. A generous gift helped us and uh I don't know I liked it.
made me smile. absolutely appreciate the gift. Yeah yeah well. I can't take credit for it.

but yeah, that is exactly how it went down for sure. Yeah and uh yeah and anybody that is actually here contributing is giving back to education on uh, the whole industry as a large I mean this is one of main hubs right now for Education that happens online. you have so many streamers. So many Educators here it's good to see everybody.

but like really appreciate you guys showing up giving back to what we're doing and and I know you always have a good time when you're here too. I Love it! It's like family and you know we jokingly talk about and you were there obviously um working for Kaos it the first year I Remember Brian reaching out going hey could you come down and could you do eight hours and and we worked it down at 4 hours And the reason I say all that. Now it's so popular you're lucky to get a 45 minute slot cuz it's such an honor to be here. you know what I mean.

So anyways, cool all right. So when is talk tomorrow? So we're doing right before lunch I Want to say 10:40 to noon or something like that? It's about a buck. 45 an hour and 45 minutes or hour 25. You guys can chime in live tomorrow before before lunch.

Find the slot. Yeah, that'll be great. Hit that like button. Yeah.

awesome, cool. Anything else? No I think that's about it. All right. That's about it.

All right. Well filled you in on what you miss. Hopefully next year you can actually be here and get to talk to Don and hang out a little bit. Be great.

And then we can start counting down until R32 and R454 are obsolete. This green crap is never going to end.
