Hear that sound, it's like stuck in harvest or something air pumps are runnin. That's a part of this mode, something funky going on here, but we're just gon na go ahead and watch it through a cycle come up to my condensers. Well, they're not plugs, but they're. Not cleaned by any me, so I turn them both off and I'm gon na start them both at the same time, even though I think there's only a problem with the left, we go through my checklist here that I made so every two minutes.
I'm gon na write down the pressures and I'm doing the left and the right machine just to get a comparison from washing bow to talk to you on my left. My right, I'm watching the frequency at which the microphone thickness probes are sensing. No and then I'm just watching the machine make hi it's just a waiting game and evaporators slushing up right now, which is a normal occurrence water pumps running to moving. So it's just flushing up.
That will happen most of the time after a safety and might take two cycles to make it right. You can also check your sensors, it's nice when you have two machines. Next to each other. You can compare 97.
97. 25, 25 i'ma back yo manual right here. He'll tell you nor the camera. We've got a quiet kid with two evaporators.
So three and four are your two evaporator sensors and receiver in that receiver, outlet, t1 and t2. So it's just a way already found a problem. My frequency was getting too high. I didn't get it on film.
My thickness probe was way too thin. It was too close to the evaporator. It's almost impossible for me to show this to you in the camera. They have a measurement.
So what I did for now is adjust it at weight fit and then I'll set it. Once I get the ice, I can tell why to put ice on the ridge on the evaporator plate when it's the right thickness. So then I'll set it and harvest the Machine and check the thickness that in there that would definitely cause a long harvest so kind of see the ice to start your form here, you'd give it a peel it. You can see it for me a little thin on this one, still this one's a little bit thicker, but this one looks like it's kind of running out of water, but I didn't think there was a problem with this one but check this out.
Just dangle. No wonder it's out of water, water level, probes, effed up so now I didn't have a water level Club or it's actually the bracket, that's broken temporarily. I just super glued it. So now it's standing straight up.
Okay, I'll get a buy order, need rack and I'll change. The probe we're gon na watch that one make ice then we'll time it again so so far, here's what we've got left made the first batch in 14 minutes of 42 seconds. That's a wee bit on the long side. 56.
Second Harvest. I haven't - checked the pressures to the book yet the right side. Again the ice is kind of wonky because that water level folk was messed up so we'll time. Another cycle, but now my left after I adjusted the ice thickness probe we're looking much better 1046 for the first cycle, 44 seconds for the harvest, and but I'm going to check the pressures for the book right now. Tip fill up the ice cart while you're working on it every chance. You get that way when you're on the ladder and they come over here. They've already got a full ice cart and you don't got to get off the ladder, we're getting closer to harvest and we don't seem to be running out of water anymore. This is on the right machine and that's because I just glued that water level probe.
So it stays up, you could see it. It's still really wonky, like barely holding again hold for the weekend this Friday night right now. They recommend guys getting thicker and thicker. So it's almost there, maybe another minute or two.
It's gon na harvest right now, the factory as pressures the microphone or water level or ice thickness broke. So it's using this air pump right here as an assist to speed up the process and it's using cool vapor off the top of the receiver. What's that sound, this whole thing would fall off as a sheep. Wonderful, she again, every two minutes, I'm doing left and right machine next to each other.
Okay. So every two minutes, I'm writing down the pressures and then, when everything's done all the way through the harvest cycle, I'm gon na analyze it by the numbers that the book says it should be of which I actually wrote right here. So I've got my pressures right here, so I'm watching both machines, the shop two on my left machine. The bottom show my right and that's my outside air temperature 73.
So I do this so that way I can analyze it later. If I need it whenever's this factory foam tape, they send sucked. You know what and we install these machines. We used to use what they would ship.
We don't anymore. We get our own. We get like a neoprene foam tape that sets the Machine up a half inch and the dodo heads that they have cleaning their machines here. They come over here and they see this and they pull it out.
Well, then, the machine doesn't have foam tape and you get this crap and the foam tape goes back so give you a tip, don't use the factory foam tape all right. We were called out on ice machines, not producing ice. It's Friday night. I got the call at 4 o'clock, so we were on overtime, went out to the restaurant.
When I arrived, the machines the left machine was not working. Properly was not working. The right machine was producing slow and erratic ice. What I found was the left machine.
The ice thickness probe was way out of adjustment. I adjusted to the proper thickness and watch the Machine make ice and it's working properly. Now the right machine. I found that the machine was actually running out of water during the cycle and, as you saw in the video, what I found was that the thickness probe bracket was actually broken.
They have cleaners that come through and clean these machines yeah, let's not go into that, but they end up causing a lot of problems. So the bracket was more than likely broken by when the guys were cleaning it and the machine was running out of water because, though ice or the water level probe was sitting in there crooked and it just wasn't getting the right, you know level set up so Temporarily, I put some superglue on it. I'm gon na go in order, the bracket and a probe, and then I went ahead and went ahead and adjusted the thickness on the right machine. Also. So now both machines are making ice like they're supposed to be doing. One thing I did notice, though - and this is kind of a trend I've been noticing - is during the harvest cycle - I've been having a lot of machines that have been manufactured in the last three years where they don't meet. They never make the pressures that the manna talk book says they should make during the harvest cycle. It'll run the head pressure and suction pressure.
Correct, typically, is what I see, but the head pressure and the harvest cycle is always low. We were running, I think in the 140 range I believe, was the head pressure during harvest and I believe the book says minimum 150. But I've chased this problem down before and never come up with a solution. I've talked to the manufacturer, they recommended me changing the head master, but I just don't see change in the head master because it's maintaining the head masters working properly in the freeze cycle and it's bypassing it's not.
You know not bypassing, and I really can't see it being the compressor either and the reason why I'm hesitant is because I've had this problem multiple times on brand-new machines. You know a month old, anywhere from a month old to three years old. I've had the same problem where you tend to see low head pressure, so I'm kind of thinking that the pressure that's published in the book is actually incorrect. Now some of you will say you're not an engineer.
You need to do what they say, but the problem is as a contractor. They don't pay enough time for me to change the head master anyways. So, even if it was under warranty and I lose money when I change that head master, so I don't want to change it unless I really have to even if they're telling me to because they don't pay me my hourly rate, the full rate. You know they pay their warranty, negotiated labor rates or whatever, and they never pay the full time that it takes either, which is just you know we can.
I can make a whole video on doing warranty work but anyways regardless. That's just something I noticed so when I come back to change that bracket, I'm also going to clean the condensers because they were a little bit dirty and what I'll do is I'll put my probes on there and test the Headmaster's just to be safe. But when both the machines side-by-side are doing the exact same thing, it really makes you start to wonder and in my particular situation this the restaurants that I work on. They always have two machines right next to each other. So it's really cool to be able to diagnose and put your gauges on both. You know you can look at the book, then you can look at the other machine and say: okay, you know. Sometimes you see both machines have a problem, but most of the time it's only one machine, and it also helps you to diagnose things like this, where maybe the Headmaster's bad. But then you put your gauges on the other one.
It's doing the same thing and you're like yeah. I don't think so, something's not right and it's not there's no safety. In there I mean it's not not making ice, it's making ice fine, but just during the harvest cycle the head pressure comes down to 140. Sometimes you even like 138, which that one kind of worries me a little bit, but I mean I see it a lot so, regardless I'm going to order the parts and then we'll come back out but other than that they're going, the machines are making beautiful ice Pressures were great, you know other than the head pressure and the harvest, and that's it.
For the low head pressure measurements – maybe your test equipment needs to be sent out for calibration.
Are you going to get a dog like Steve hase miss molly
Where did you get that Ice machine service guide sheet that you were filling out?
Hey where did you get that book?Is it Manitowic? Thanks I like how you take a lot of pride in your work, very thorough.
Great
Have you tried changing the flux capacitor….works every time….hope this helps Are you in Nepean ?
I hate when manufacturers don't engineer their own products correctly or send out false information for anyone who needs it.
They have cleaners that clean these machines…. let's not going into that!! 😂😂 Brilliant 😂😂😂 I feel your pain buddy, we have the same issue in the uk!!! Keeps us in work, so let them brake sorry CLEAN as much as you want!!👍
Ice thickness being too close causing long harvest. Is t because the ice sheet does not open and close the bin switch?
Engineers are all good on paper but don’t see them in the field. Seen this many times. I’m sure they know the problem because they hear it from other techs. Hobart was a good company until we started installing there state of the art dish machines. Oh we have this new card that will troubleshoot the whole machine. Not. Something a engineer came up with and it died. Shut my high school middle school down till a tech came out Phoenix with another card. Keep it simple gentleman. Lol.
Why dont you measure every ice cube? Are you in Orleans ?
are they remote cond. and i live in orlando with 98 degree ambient temps head pressure not a problem, where do you live.
I used to work at a resturaunt in Minneapolis Minnesota when I was just out of high school. The ice machine was in the basement with a walk in cooler. Every morning we would have to scrape off the top foot or two of ice cubes to get all the cockroaches out. I was told they were attracted to a warm oil in the head of the machine and fall into the ice bin.
Nice!!
I own my own HVACR company here in Arkansas. Love your videos and tech tips.
I would to see your truck set up!! You should make a video on it.
Gahhhhh had one of these the other day that the customer called forced me to come out to fix. drove an hour to get there and right in front on the place the fire dept. was purging the hydrant lines. inside the customer had zero water pressure. literally made a suckling sound when I turned on a sink. explained it to the customer and they told me the ice machine has it's own dedicated line and is not effected by municipal water lines and was told I need to goto college…..Walked out of there knowing I made more on that overtime BS call then he did during his double.
Wow, this was great!! I'm sitting here repairing a Manitowoc Board right now!! I found you because I wondered if anyone did vids on it and yep they do!! Good job!! HVACR since 1978, and I sure am glad there are folks like you out there, So many are rip off's and I can see you are not. I am glad you are carrying on the tradition!!!!
Pressure could be incorrect. Also could be freon selection for the unit may not be the best. Or a controlled invorment situation on published pressures.
U look tired! I know the feeling 😔
Hot gas valves they stick I went to manitowoc school and have talked to tech support and they swear they don't go out what I found they stick and are flimsy so when I wouldn't have proper pressure on harvest according to specs on book regarding what tech support told me I would replace and unit would work properly all I would look for proper pressure on harvest if wasn't to specs and water temp proper and evap clean and no leaks in refrigerant I would replace if pressure was not correct and I would not have issues after tech support need to catch up or have part come from different manufacturers
This is a McDonald’s isn’t it
I m just hating the 3 dislikes holy cow balls
Five nights Service area Kanata??
People dont always adjust the ice probe after cleaning.
Hey Chris, I have a question. Why would the ice production time increase if the ice thickness sensor was set too close? With the ice being thin, I would think it would form much quicker on the evaporator & go into harvest.
ice machine today, bad start cap.
They called you at 4am ??? Hope you were paid well for that job!
Ha ha ha, I knew it. Those Maniotach thickness probes can be a pain.
I'm at 1 min into the video and I'm guessing the ice thickness probe is the problem. Seems to be common with these machines.
people can not reach the top without thinking lots of why. Service area Barrhaven??
Started with Ted Cook now I'm here… I don't know why!!!
Why am I watching these?
Why am I enjoying these?
I’ve noticed that also. I don’t think headmaster is going to do any good.
Ice bridge thickness effects head pressure in harvest mode, so if it is not set up as factory thickness pressure will vary. In my experience the less a pcb has control over in a cycle, the less breakdowns you will have. The fact that this brand of machine uses a damn microphone to activate harvest mode is just ridiculous and over engineered. Service area Orleans??
Like the video, but I disagree with putting gauges on those. 99% of the time, including this time, it's water or electrical. Not chastising you at all, everyone has different methods, but I usually use gauges as a last resort, especially on ice machines/small cap tube systems. Keep on making groovy videos!
Cool check off list.
You have to love babysitting an ice machine especially after hours.
How long it took you to know all this? When did you become confident? I start my first refrigeration job tmw a little nervous, there so much to know, I just don't want to look stupid in front of customers. Are you in Kanata ?
What terminates the harvest cycle?
Interesting about the head pressure. You know, I don’t pay a lot of attention to the harvest head pressure unless I’m trying to diagnose a production problem like long harvest. I’ve changed a few headmasters. You can get it done pretty close to the warranty time allowance, but I definitely can’t make a video while doing it 😅
looks like a chilis…we service 10 of them
just had a manitowoc school today and they told us as long as you have a min. of 140 degrees on discharge line you should have no problems with harvest, they didnt stress on the pressures.
Would like to see tape product you use. I have 12 machines on property from new Manitowocs to 13 yr old IceOMatics… Some of the new machines are half the capacity of what they replaced and are on huge bins. Sadly, the placements are off center with fill in plates on only one side. Bottom line I need to remount several and looking for a good, one time fix.
Check the fan switch switch known problems with them and that machine needs both to work correct get correct harvest pressures Service area Ottawa??
