Installing the Honeywell T10 thermostat for the first time. I wanted to see what it looked like and how easy it was to program. I normally like the Honeywell line of thermostats, but the T10 is unlike any of their others.

Hey guys before we get to today's video buck here, our supervisor here at griffin, air. He told me to tell you to please click that subscribe button. Thank you: hey guys, josh for griffin, air, serving the middle peninsula and the northern neck of virginia and wanted to do a video on the t10 thermostat we're going to install this sucker on a wall and see what it looks like see how it works. All that fun stuff - i actually have never put one of these in i so you're gon na get first hand real time.

My reaction, good or bad and we've done a lot of the other t, series, honeywells and, of course, the old pro series. But i've not done a two uh t10. Yet so um stay tuned. Okay, so here we are the last time i did.

One of these you guys didn't want to see my face. You wanted to see the thermostat up close a little better, so i'm going to try to do that uh. Hopefully i can still get this installed. Okay, but we're going to start with this back plate.

A lot of the t-series honeywell stuff has the same sort of setup, and so it actually makes it kind of nice because if you've done one, you can do them all, and i believe because of that they're all kind of interchangeable, so you're going to push out On that tab and you're going to separate these two plates right here, we're going to set this one to the side for now and we're just going to mount this one and go from there. So you're going to push your wires through here and we're going to go through the complete setup here. So, if you are, you know wondering something with the setup or whatever. Hopefully i can help you with that.

I'm not going to get too crazy specific, but if there's one specific setting that maybe it's holding you up or you're just not quite sure we're going to go over that so got our plate on here. I love that the screws are the same distance. You know same dimensions as the old honeywell that i had on the wall here, so that's kind of cool, and so you know just like with the t-series. We don't have any screws.

As far as connecting the low voltage stuff we've got, these push pins, so we're gon na get the wires up in here. Like so make sure you kill power if you're doing this by the way, you will regret it. If you don't, i don't care how good you are. It never fails i'll, have a technician working with me and they think they're good enough.

They, you know, try to replace a thermostat and dern if they don't put get one of the hot wires shorted out to ground or common, and now you got a blown transformer or, at the very least, the blown fuse. So these things are pretty cut and dry. Here and you know a lot of the honeywell setups - you got two r's, one is for your heating and cool, and one is for your cooling and so you'll want to follow the instructions on that. If you are doing something to where you have two separate systems, or something like that for the most case, you're going to use both of them and you're going to leave all that the way it is so with these wires, you literally just push them up into The hole and if you saw that tab went down and what i like to do, is i like to pull up on the tab a little bit it.
I think it makes the wire a little more snug. It grabs the wire a little bit better and all that good stuff. Next, we are going to connect the common and the interesting thing about this setup. Whoever came up with this is you know when they have these tabs.

A lot of these thermostats can sense, which one of these tabs are depressed, and you know a lot of times. It helps you with the programming. The thermostat will know what kind of setup you have what kind of system you have sometimes just based off of that. You know what which wires are depressed.

You know, if the if the y isn't compressed, then it knows that there's no outdoor unit compressor that they need to engage. You know you got some sort of other. You know whatever all right and orange goes under ob, regardless of what brand you have. If you have a rheem rude, uh, ameristar bosh, i think then maybe the new oxbox units, i'm not sure about them, but i believe the other four brands you're going to be programming this for b, to engage in heating and just about every other brand on the Planet you're going to be engaging this as oh to engage in cooling.

So hopefully that helps. If you have a question on that, but pushing in on the green and everything's nice and snug so there that is, and then you've got this little door here. Hinged, you close it. It's a very clean, looking type of installation all the t-series have switched to this type of setup and uh.

You know it's got it's good and bad. I guess. Finally, if you remember this uh, i call them escutcheon plates. It's the plumber in me, i guess, and it's just the uh, the plate that goes on the outside and it simply just pops on here.

You just get one side pop the other, and there you go. The thing that's great about this is, if you had say a you know, a rectangular thermostat before this plate's going to help you cover more of that wall. You know, i can't tell you how many times that, especially if we go with a smaller thermostat you'll, see where the paint lines stopped, whoever painted the wall they stopped at the thermostat, and now that you've put up a different type of thermostat. It doesn't cover the same footprint, so i uh this this gray look good, looking excusion is different than at least the t4s and t6s they have more of a cream or a white looking discussion.

So not sure. I honestly, i'm not sure if i like that, but now here's one thing with this cover plate when the thermostat came. It actually already has this discussion on it. It's a lot.

Smaller i've seen other videos where they've used that and i've seen a couple other videos where they've used this, but they never show you how to swap it. It's actually fairly easy. If you take just a you know little fine screwdriver, you can actually wedge it between this gray escutcheon and the white part here and then just kind of wedge it up and you'll feel it kind of. Let go okay, so just wanted to show you that nobody had uh had gone over that at least any any of the videos.
I've seen so once you've done, that you'll be able to just pop the thermostat on the wall and that's how it looks so again. You don't actually don't need this big one. You can use the one that it you know comes in the box, that's clicked to it, but i personally i like the bigger one. A little better covers a little more space and uh and all that good stuff.

Okay, i am going to turn on power. Okay turned on here. Welcome. Let's set up your new thermostat english bedroom living space - other, i guess we're going to say living space.

Rec room is actually i call it the man cave, but we are in my rec room, which temperature fahrenheit next red link devices. Would you like to add any red link indoor air sensors for t9 t10 uh this this one again it did come. If you see it saw my other video of me unboxing this guy, it did come with a sensor. I'm not going to mess with that right now, but you would just hit add device and follow the instructions, so we're gon na say set up later and you a lot of these questions are self-explanatory, like setting up your wi-fi and such time and date, and all That fun stuff everything's touch screen here and i don't really care about any of this, so done.

Okay, so now we are here, we're gon na go to installer options, okay, so back to the installer options, i actually finally found in our book here - hey guys. I just wanted to stop for a second and show you in the manual that if you are trying to get into the installer setup and change any of the settings that we're about to go over, i wanted to touch on right in the book. It does say if you're trying to get into the installer setup, open the menu icon and choose the thermostat information and the date code in the thermostat information is going to be that four digit code to get into your installer setup. Hopefully that helps the installer set up, and this is where you're going to you know tell the thermostat what type of system you have again, depending on how you wired it and the tabs and all that stuff in a lot of cases.

It's going to know a lot of this stuff for you, but this is where what i wanted to show you, because if you have a heat pump system, it's currently on conventional forced air heat heat pump, radiant heat, none cool, only we're going to change that to Heat pump air to air heat pump, and then this is where you're going to set that orb. So again, if you have a rheem, rood, ameristar or bosch one of those brands, if you need to engage in heating, you would select b just about every other brand. On the market carrier train bryant, all the icp brands, daikin goodman amana, all those guys they're all going to be oh compressor, stages and backup heat stages, we're not going to mess with that and well actually backup heat. We have none on this uh your changeover.
This is where you can have a range, basically is what what this is asking. So if you have an auto changeover, it will give you you know if it goes above, a certain temperature. Your ac is going to come on if it goes below a certain temperature. Your heat's going to come on auto change over differential.

So that's asking what you want your range to be. I usually do three compressor cycles per hour. Here's the thing with the cycles. I don't mess with that stuff.

Honestly, i mean i've been doing this for uh a while now almost 20 years, and i have never changed that any of the cycles and i've never had an issue. The cycles are there uh, you know, based on you know how many cycles per hour it's going to come on and off, and things like that. I always just use the factory settings to be honest, compressor off time. This is you know if you were to make a change or power went out or for whatever reason, the you know the thermostat resets it's gon na have a delay.

It's not gon na. You know if you were to switch it from heat to cool, for example, and you need ac, it's not going to immediately. Do it. It's going to have a five minute delay, so we're going to leave that at five.

You can adjust that if you want extend to fan run times, i've done other videos on this. Depending on what type of system you have type of home. You have. There are times when you might turn on the extended fan, run time and heat.

There are times when you might turn on the extended fan, run time and cool check out one of those other videos that i've done uh. You know i did one on the dirty sock syndrome and sometimes extended fan run times and cool can help with that. I did another uh. Well, i'm not sure if i did a video on the heat, but we actually had a customer a couple years ago that we had to turn that on because of the you know, the uh, the heat strip overload switch was getting too hot.

So we turned that on took care of that adaptive, intelligent recovery. No! Yes, i always leave that on. Yes, your minimum set points and cool set points, so i normally do 60. As my minimum, i can't imagine too many residential situations where you're going to want to go below that, and you can actually, you might actually cause issues if one of your kids were to actually turn it down lower than that.

So i normally set that as 60 keypad lockout unlocked that's up to you. Normally, i leave it unlocked for most residential situations. But years ago we had a college dorm where the kids kept messing with stuff, and so they asked us to fully lock that what sensors are wired to your system again, this is you know this thermostat came with a sensor, we're not going to mess with that Right now, what type of filtration system do you have, if you're not sure on this, you definitely probably want to find out, and this is going to play a role more than anything just for your reminders, if you want to turn on the reminder, uh to get You know, services or change your filters, things like that number of filters one and then this is there. That reminder i was telling you about same, goes for your humidifier and your reminder for that ventilation same deal.
You know if you're, not sure you probably want to hire a pro, so you get this all programmed correctly. We're going to leave this in no and finally, your uvs. So if you had a uv light in here, it's going to have a if you were to turn that to one or whatever. It would have a reminder for that clock format we're going to stay with 12 daylight savings time.

I always leave that on, and this is an interesting feature, so sometimes thermostats will have what they call offsets and basically, what that is. Is you know some of you guys watching this uh or some of you guys that you know you've had a customer that it falls in this category, but they're watching their own little digital thermometer or something like that, and they think that something's wrong with the thermostat. The you know, there's really not the thermostat's gon na try to reach whatever temperatures you set it at and you can actually change those offsets and the humidity or the temperature to help offset that. So if the, if their little thermometer says it's 72 in there - and this says 74, you just adjust it company information and then finally done so, that's just a quick run through of the installer setup.

I just wanted to show you that so that way, if you have any questions, if you have any questions, you know you're not sure about something. Just leave a comment down in the comments. I try to answer all those and maybe we can uh. You know help you with that, but for the most part, it's pretty cut and dry.

I actually like this thermostat this first time. I've ever put it in it's very clean. Looking and uh. You know i'm impressed, there's where you can uh set your schedule and finally, this is your home screen.

So if you want to turn it on, you just tap off we're going to switch it to cool and we're going to cool it down in here. For a little bit permanent hold we're going to cool it down here, but uh yeah thanks for watching. I. I really hope that helped, hopefully uh.

If you do have this thermostat or you're, checking out this thermostat, it's wi-fi capable uh. I i've always been a big fan of the honeywell products in comparison to some of the other brands and i'm not sure that they're the best, but they seem to do everything pretty well and uh. You know, hopefully you uh, this helped you so that's pretty much. It guys, if you are setting up the wi-fi, the there's a little slip of paper in there, that you don't want to lose.
That has all the information for that and you know that'll help you with the mac id and things like that. But you know, hopefully this helped, and i really appreciate you watching if you're in the market, for a new heating and air system and you're in griffin, air's coverage area in the middle peninsula or neck northern neck of virginia, give us a call we'd love to give You a free estimate, if you're not in our coverage area, but you are in the market for a new heating and air system. You got to check out my new website. New hvac guide com i'll put a link to it down in the notes, but before you spend thousands check out this website, the whole site is basically meant to help you just like a cpa would help you do your taxes.

This site is supposed to help. You go through the process of buying a heating and air system uh. You know a lot of us we're only going to buy three four of these in our lifetime. Anyway, especially if we don't move a lot, the education sometimes is lacking.

When it's you know, if you compare it to say a car, you know you buy one every few years. You know what you like and so on, but with heating and air things change technology comes out and this website is meant to help you with that. Definitely check it out. I've got it so much stuff on there there's a whole page called no nose things to stay away from and i'm putting all kinds of stuff on there that a lot of other contractors and manufacturers don't even want you to know so definitely check that out.

Thanks for watching and please subscribe, thank you.

Thanks for the helpful video! We just had a new Bosch package unit installed on our roof (BRB) and we were informed after install that Bosch had recently informed them that the Nest algorithm doesn't play nice with the Bosch smart features in the unit. They recommended the T10 or an Ecobee. We decided on the T10 since it will allow us to set the cycles per hour down to the recommended (1). Also, the extra smart features on the T10 and Ecobee need to be turned off as well we're being told.

I appreciate the video. I came across it looking for the differences between the T10 and the T9. It seems to me that the T10 pro is more for dual fuel, de/humidifiers, vent, etc. I have a fairly straight forward heat pump, all electric, no humidifier nor any of the other features. Pretty vanilla. Safe to assume, then, that the T9 should be all I need? I actually have 2 separate units for the different floors, so I need to stats. One is a Trane and the other is a Carrier, both newer than 2013 and still working well. Current thermostats are both the same, both Honeywell, though can't remember the model right off.I think it is RTH8500D, 7-Day Universal.

Does this model do both Redlink and WiFi? Are you in Kanata ?

  7. Avataaar/Circle Created with python_avatars Felix Rivas says:

Thanks for the video. I’m still on the fence… since the setup for T10 is more involved than say a Nest. I like the idea of taking off a T6 and popping in a T10. But there are so many details in the configuration that I just don’t know much about… those questions just do not come up in Nest set up. Thoughts?

    Great video!

Where did you get that large wall/cover/trim plate? I'm replacing two horizontal style Honeywell thermostats with T9s, but cannot find that large wall/cover/trim plate anywhere. I'm trying to avoid repainting two walls just for a new thermostat.

Hello, will the T10 automatically recognize the Honeywell fresh air system when the wire is plugged into the U1 slot? I was hoping to use a nest thermostat, but it doesn’t support the fresh air system. Thanks

Awesome video Josh, one thing I haven't seen anyone go into depth with is the schedule settings here, I've talked to a few people at the honeywell tech support with no luck, and simply cannot figure out how to stop thermostat from changing the temperature by itself in the middle of the night being on it's factory schedule. I have tried going into geofencing and setting a schedule but cannot figure it out! It turns down to 62 every night and my heater will not kick on so I wake up freezing. Any clues as to why it keeps doing this? Thanks!

  27. Avataaar/Circle Created with python_avatars Hugh says:

Will this Tstat control dual fuel using the internet temp instead of the hardwired sensor? I don't have the extra pair of wires running to Tstat from outdoor unit to connect a sensor. Will be upgrading from a Vision Pro 8000 set to gas heat full time. If it's necessary I can get my contractor to pull new wires when he helps me with the install, but wanted to avoid it if possible. Are you in Ottawa ?

  28. Avataaar/Circle Created with python_avatars Pete Fork says:

    Hi Josh,

I had a T5 and was able to lockout the Em heat above 25 degrees in the settings. This way I was using the heatpump and saving on electricity.
I bought a T9 and this option is not available on this unit vs the t10.
However, I do have the capability to just zero the backup heat on my T9, just like you did on this video on the t10.
Does this mean that even if I have the back up heat, it will be completely locked out and I will use just the heat pump?

I don't like the blowing of cold air when the heatpump can't get hot air flowing on it's own when temps outside are let's say below 25? but it saves a lot of electricity.
I am not sure at what outside temp will my T9 turn on the EM heat if I just leave on. Do you? (i know they use Accuweather to determine the outside temp for the lockout)

Should I buy the T10 instead as a home owner just for this feature? I live in TN and we do get some nights that get to the 25s and several on 35 degrees.

With the T5 I had it lock out the EM when temps were above 25 degrees and it saved me a ton of money last year.
I have a newer heatpump now though and will be installing new windows as well, so my home will be able to keep heat inside longer I hope.
( a goodman 3.5 ton heatpump with air handler under the house.)

Anyways, I'd appreciate your input on this. Thanks

Josh, awesome video. I sell these stats up in Canada and I wish more contractors were as comfortable as you jumping into the wifi world. You are helping this movement!! Lol
