As Bert welcomed his sixth child to the family and took some time off work, he began reflecting on his training life and figuring out what he could do to be a better HVAC trainer. He talks about his progress as he learns, grows, and develops into a better trainer.
Bert thought that the 3rd Annual HVACR Training Symposium was an inspiring experience, and he wanted to improve his training. He realized that his Monday morning training classes lacked passion, and he wanted to change up his approach to get his passion back.
Along the way, Bert grew out his beard, became an HVAC tech therapist, and encouraged his trainees to talk about their feelings. When that wasn't enough, he let the employees shoot their trainer with a bow and arrow. He realized that he wasn't being taken seriously, so he preached the word of HVAC from the rooftops.
So, Bert began focusing on accountability; he wanted to put a system in place that holds technicians accountable. To do that, he made a noted list of potential areas of growth for each technician; if a technician called him asking for help, he'd write it down and follow up with them to make sure they learn the material they asked about.
When Bert's not passionate, he shows up and does the bare minimum, which is an attitude that spreads to his team. To nip that outlook in the bud, Bert made it a priority to show up for his technicians in times of need. He made sure he was there to celebrate milestones and transitions in his trainees' careers, such as when they got their own vans or started doing harder service calls or quoted repairs.
He also focused on mastering the virtue of patience. Everyone has gaps in knowledge and experience, and as a trainer, Bert knew that it was his responsibility to encourage his trainees to give them the courage to keep learning.
While on hiatus from working, Bert also developed a step-by-step process for training all of his technicians. Its contents are still a mystery, but Bert is the greatest trainer in the world, so we all know that it'll be good.
A reminder of Bert's tips:
1. Walk quickly
2. Don't pull out your phone during training UNLESS your company requires it for the task
3. Put in your own effort as you're learning (don't rely on a trainer to set your pace)
4. Don't complain or gossip
5. Learn how to count

Okay, burt life, thanks for being interested in my life, i'm gon na tell you all about it, one second, okay about my life, i think uh. First and foremost, i want everyone to know that uh we had another baby, another child here she is. This is fern. Hey sweetheart, can you say hi to the world out there.

This is definitely the biggest thing going on in bert's life right now and i just finished two whole weeks off to be with the baby, which is a thing you can do when you have uh six kids and uh fern is number six who wants candy. You want some candy come here. Joey come here, that's great! Okay! Kids! I think we're done here. This is laura.

My wife thanks babe, you guys are awesome. So this is definitely the best part of my life and who i am but uh yeah. Let's talk about hvac, maybe in this burt life, so for me and hvac. What i have going on right now is actually trying to learn how to be a better trainer.

So this video is going to be about my progress and learning and growing up and being a better trainer. Bye-Bye bye-bye joby sweetheart. This video is about me. Okay, all right.

Let's do this. Jordan, you're gon na have a great day you're a winner, jordan, you're a winner. I have been actually processing a lot. My uh training life.

The symposium was here and it was super inspiring the people that come came in and actually like talked and the group of technicians awesome time i mean you guys have seen so much from that already and heard a lot about it. It was amazing, but i did actually feel inspired to improve my training, not to mention there was plenty of comments of uh how sad my monday morning, classes looked like the lack of passion and in my defense, i'm just really sleepy monday morning i mean clearly it's Monday in operation, because this week and last week got a lot of calls about stuff that we've taught a lot of classes on and done a lot of training on, but i've been trying to process how to get my passion back. Alternative training techniques just hasn't felt the same since then. How does that make you feel? How does that make me feel when she showed you the price of a capacitor on amazon? It felt like a a criminal, a criminal, that's normal.

I thought first step grow out. This beard, what do you think i mean if you can grow a good beard, you can command respect might be a surprise to you, but some of the technicians around here don't always see me as serious when i'm being serious come on, come on, let it out. Let it out every everything you've been holding in for years against me, just let it out let it pour out this. This is your moment, also uh, looking into some more ancient styles of of teaching, maybe even preaching and incorporating that into what i do.

You might think you don't know something about this. Let me tell you everything you need to know i'm here to give you today come on. Are you guys listening to right? I want someone down there to shout out to me what your evaporation temperature should be. If you know what your return is, is there anybody out there a saturation temperature over return should be about 35 degrees boys? A flip onto this don't think i won't all right so another area - and this is probably where i'm working the most right now on my life since you're, asking about my life and you seem to want to know um of being a good trainer, is accountability and Finding a system for holding technicians accountable for what they know and what they're learning then post standby.
I don't want to see you at the shop unless you post standby, one really good thing that i've done is started, making a noted list on every technician. If i get a call from somebody, i'm actually going to put in my notes what it was that they're, missing technically or in the process and then follow up, give some homework, follow up and give accountability. Thank you, sir. Hey how's it going good.

How are you good just checking in about having that meeting with the homework? I gave you oh right, i was just gon na check in with you about the homework homework. Yeah the training homework um yeah. I find that when i i'm actually not passionate, i'm just showing up and doing the bare minimum bare minimum and then that attitude is passed on to anybody else. That's an influence in my life, hey austin! What do you got going on there um? I was wondering if there's something that i did, that caused the hose to explode or if it just decided that it was itself your refrigerant hose exploded.

It's so easy for me to just fall back into i'm only a technical trainer, and i will teach you some things and about acs and how to fix them. Hey jacob, hey bert, i got it. Oh thank you. So nice yeah check it out.

This is my favorite one every once in a while. You find a walmart that still has it, but you can get it online boom and then the the corners you can strap into the condensers, got it yeah. And so, when it's windy, this actually works. And then you have a pole that sticks into the ground.

It comes all the way out. If you need to you, can bang it into the ground nice and then these for your request, this one's just got a lot better. Seals for the micro engage, okay yeah. So the threads aren't as long.

It doesn't bottom out before it tightens down, so that should eliminate your micro gauge problem and then uh way easier to use the 90. So i still found having 90 in my kit slip that on and then you'll find it. So much easier to attach your happy on sweet. Thank you, burt yeah, okay, so, since we're doing just say, you're the best trainer i've ever had the best trainer i've ever had bert.

Thank you. I actually have to show up when there's a time of need. I actually have to be there in the big moments of transition. Probably the most fun i have is when a technician is advancing from one step to another there just get into their van or now it's time to take on harder service calls.
Now it's time to do quoted repairs. So i know you don't have one of these projects on yet today, but yes, right, yep everything you need for this, that's it you are. You know i really appreciate it. You're no longer maintenance deck everybody now around here is gon na have a little bit more respect for you, because you're gon na be taking quoted repairs that they don't want to do.

I can feel it already starting. You already know how to use all this right. Yeah any questions about this particular piece of equipment. What are they recovering machine? Okay? So here's your recovery, machine, okay, gotcha in out and out label.

I already know you know all of this: okay, okay, so yeah um! If you need any better just a big moment and if you need any backup on your first repair, do you actually want somebody to ride with you on your first repair? No, i've done. I've done quota repairs with people. So that's a no. I would say no for the first time and then you know what answers see, what i was hoping for.

It's a good answer. Micro engage, really take care of that water, put it somewhere safe. I don't keep it in my go bag because anything can happen. Anything happen you have that out in the rain um.

I would probably strap your torches a little better. I like the one, but then everything can swing around so another one that when i have the door closed on the side - and i got you your tank holders for the extra acetylene acetylene and and oxygen nice. Thank you. Yesterday, american band order welcome to quoted repairs.

Thank you. One of the most important aspects of being a trainer is actually having patience with people. People are gon na, have gaps of knowledge that they should have already known, and they don't know or gaps in experience, actually having a good attitude towards people. When that happens, gives them the courage to keep looking for knowledge, hey, joel, i can't find a train.

I've looked all over the house. Where is it? You can't find a drain line? No, i can't find it. This is not a real problem, so you're gon na find the drain line or you're gon na be fired. You understand what you're up against no, but i can't find it.

I looked upstairs it's good, it's good, um yeah. What were we talking about? Oh sorry, i didn't realize we were still having this interview just honing in my training skills um. It's actually something that's kind of foreign to me, but i've been developing during my time off from having this baby a step-by-step process for training. All of my technicians.

Look at this green to mean 30 days. Let me let me show you what i've worked on here day. Two four five i mean just imagine how much this is going to be worth. I'm gon na have people lining up online just to get their hands on this kind of material.

My process for training, new texts - nah i've - never actually used a process. So this is a big deal for me. This is going to blow everybody's mind at kayla's when they see me come up with something like this, but you're right, we're doing an interview right now. I don't know how that came in.
So i've talked enough about me. What about you a lot of you watching this video are actually in training or you want to go into training or you're still in school, and you need some tips from the greatest trainer in the world on how to be the best helper tip number one. If you know me, you've heard these already walk fast. You understand, do not drag your feet and walk slow from point.

A to point b. Point: two: don't look at your phone during your entire training process. Do not pull out your phone unless your company is using. This device - and you are being specifically asked to use it for your company.

Don't pull out your phone, don't look at it all right, tip number three motivate yourself to learn what is being taught to you on your own, put in your own effort as you're learning. Don't require that whoever's training you to be the person that actually sets the pace for you for how much you learn. That's huge three, your training don't complain, don't complain, don't gossip and don't gossip, it's that simple, probably some other tips. I could give you but uh.

You know i think uh was that three or four, those are the top three walk fast put in your own effort for learning, stay off your phone and don't complain, that's four and learn how to count and you're set thanks for thanks for hearing about my life And learning about my life - and i hope something in there gave you some excitement about what we do bye thanks for watching our video, if you enjoyed it and got something out of it, if you wouldn't mind hitting the thumbs up button to like the video subscribe To the channel and click the notifications bell to be notified when new videos come out, hvac school is far more than a youtube channel.
